[Blind-Computing] Ciscovision

2011-01-15 Thread Brad Dunse

Hello,

Has anyone here taken the on-line Ciscovision courses via the Curtin
University Centre for Accessible Technology? If so I'd be interested
in how it helped you or anything else you might have to say
regarding your experience. Feel free to email me off list at
li...@braddunsemusic.com

Thanks in advance.

[Blind-Computing] Winamp and Real Audio files

I'm using Winamp 5.3 and would like to play RAM extensions. Does
anyone know of a plug in to allow those files to be played on Winamp?

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Headset recommendation?

2011-01-20 Thread Brad Dunse
I am looking for a recommendation for a decent headset. I bought a
cheaper Phillips one a while back but the left ear speaker gets
distorted lately, having to tap it to get it to stop, and when
Skyping and working at the same time , my buddy down the street has
gotten pretty good at understanding Jaws these days haha. Evidently
the mic is good enough to pick up the headphone. It is not picking up
Jaws directly, just overhearing the headphones. I'd like something
that is more enclosed, maybe something that doesn't have the elastic
foam covers that invariably and continually fall off.
and has a decent quality. USB would be OK. The one I have now hooks
to my sound card's mic and speaker inputs with 3.5mm jacks. Money is
an object, but so is rebuying later, so I'm looking for a decent set.

Thanks in advance and won't clutter list with each reply/response
unless you have a question.

[Blind-Computing] Outlook Tutorial/tips?

2011-01-26 Thread Brad Dunse
I am a brand new Outlook user and trying to get use to the various tree
menus and etc. I've organized some folders to help out but I wondered if
there were any tutorials or tips on how to set it up for efficiency use or
shortcuts/hot keys not listed in Jaws? I looked at the Outlook info in Jaws
supported programs but wondered if there were any other sources out there.
Blind Cool Tech has a couple demos on adding tasks/appontments/rules but
that is all.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I will need to learn it... I've sort of
avoided it to this point but I have to now :).

[Blind-Computing] Outlook BBC field and error message

2011-01-27 Thread Brad Dunse
Can anyone tell me how to get the BCC field available on Outlook 2003? I see
the To: CC and Subject fields but no BCC. Also I had turned off the error
message screen when an error occurs collecting email but I need to get it
back on. I've been through the Options in Outlook but can't seem to find
either. Thanks in advance.

Brad,
John here.
It's been a while but I seem to remember that there's some kind of friendly
document on the Office web site which talks about using Office to its best
potential. That is a more general application but there is a section which
deals with Outlook, not Outlook Express. I think that Microsoft would like
to forget that Outlook Express exists.
Anyway, I believe it's under office Tutorials.
There's also a video training thing but I didn't bother with that at all.
I'm sorry Mate but that's all I can remember. It's been years.
If there is a question I can answer regarding outlook for you, I'd be glad
to help, either on or off list.

I like the idea of not having it on the computer, excellent. I noticed with
this program though if you hit ESC it wil exit without saving or prompting
you to so if one is entering a bunch of info at one time and inadvertently
mix up software behavior with other programs you could lose your info and
have to re-enter it. Just as long as you don't assume it is saved
immediately or upon exiting. That is something I wished he'd have put in
there. Is this little beauty working in Seven? Oh and you can rename the
file so it isn't so obvous in case of security issues come in, at least it
appears as you can.

Thanks for this resource and credibility too.

what it might be?

Near the near bottom of the list in Device Manager, there will be a grouping

for Universal Serial Bus Controllers. You do not want to disable them, that

will not cause Windows to reinstall them. Instead, just remove them by
highlighting each one and pressing the Delete key. Windows should start
reinstalling each one fairly quickly. In fact, it might be hard to know
which ones you already deleted since they come back quickly.

actually deleted and it took the whole lot.

Ouch I need that info. It doesn't show up under Deleted items, the undo
command is grayed out and it doesn't show up in the Recycle bin of Windows.
Is there a way to get it back or am I tattooed?

Go to the Insert menu and arrow down a couple to Worksheet. They'll
default to Sheet 1, Sheet 2, Sheet 3 or the like each time. You can rename
these. If you get your Jaws cursor on one of the sheets and right click it
you'll see helpful options there.

opening the JAWS keyboard Manager and let that utility tip you off.

Glad you found it, but remember those folders aren't actually all that
separate on the hard drive as such - they generally get stored inside a
single outlook folder called something like outlook.pbx, under your user
settings, etc.

Glad you got it back anyway...

The out box is a place to see if your message was sent
So, if you send with no problems it will be found in the sent box.
If there is a situation for which your message was not sent as of yet, you
will find it in your out box.
Hope this clarifies.

It really depends on an option in the options dialogue box of almost alol
mail clients relating to whether it should send a message immediately, or
place it in outbox until next time either the user initiates the

[Blind-Computing] iTunes and Podcast question

2011-02-08 Thread Brad Dunse
I'm just getting more into iTunes with using the iPhone. I subscribed to
some podcasts and I see episodes posted/coming in after my subscription say
unplayed where the ones when I first subscribed say undownloaded. By
them saying Unplayed are they downloaded to my computer taking up
resources? I don't really want them downloaded automatically, I'd like to
see what is there and choose to download as I like. Is this possible? I
didn't find anything in the preferences towards that end.

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Outlook and viewing events

event? They do not show up there. Is there a hot key? I looked in Jaws help
but do not see anything. Are there extra scripts I can get for Outlook 2003

[Blind-Computing] Outlook autofill

2011-02-18 Thread Brad Dunse
Regarding the autofill of addresses in Outlook 2003, in the TO: field,
I'm confused as it will put in some but not all? There are folks I've mailed
a time or two and they are in there but someone I mail regularly never shows
up. What is the logic or criteria it uses to autofill? I assumed that it
would keep a history of folks you've emailed to use for autofill? Or perhaps
your contacts? I have the settings set to utilize the feature obviously as
it is doing it sometimes and I've checked to make sure its set. I really
miss this feature when I was using Eudora.

[Blind-Computing] Bookmarking iPhone radio station

2011-02-19 Thread Brad Dunse
Is there a way to bookmark a radio station found in iTunes, to the Music
area? The only submenu that comes up is copy when right clicking on it and
that unfortunately wont move it where I'd like. I just want to be able to
play it without scrolling through 200 plus stations to find it again. The
library options are only add file or folders to the library.

Hi Donnie,
Go to the control panel, and then display, and then the settings tab.
Screen resolution should be 1024 by 768, and color should be set to highest
32-bit.
These settings should give you the best results with Jaws.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Screen Resolution

2011-02-20 Thread Brad Dunse
Rick,

Its set at 32 bit highest. I'll check on the display adapter issue. I don't
believe I'm having an issue with Jaws not speaking correctly at this
resolution setting, unless its not reading something it ought and I just
don't know, but its been like this for years. I was curious why the higher
resolution stops Jaws from talking. Maybe I ought set it as such, reboot and
have a set of eyeballs at the ready to return it back if needed 'smile'.
Honestly I'll be working on a new computer within the next six months so
this old XP machine will likely be history in the relative near future and
an eventual moot point.

Thanks.

Hi Brad,
In some cases, the display adapter can be a problem with Jaws, but there is
no way I could say for sure.
You can go to Freedom Scientific's website, and look at there service
bulletins
concerning display, and see if your type of display adapter is mentioned.
The screen resolution you are using almost sounds like you are running in
compatibility mode for Win98.
Are your colors set to 256, or highest 32-bit?

[Blind-Computing] iTunes For Windows, F6 and no search results

2011-03-19 Thread Brad Dunse'
Running XP Pro, Jaws 12, iTunes Version 10.2.1.1. Is there a fix for
the F6 not working once you are in iTunes Store and in the results
area as it will not let you out? And more importantly no matter what
I put in for a search string, iTunes will only pull up the same junk
of American Idol, Justin Timberlake, latest hits, movies, TV shows,
and anything else they have on that main page. It won't find anything
I type in the search field.

Re: [Blind-Computing] iTunes For Windows, F6 and no search results

2011-03-20 Thread Brad Dunse'
OK this worked. I think the difference was instead of pressing enter
in the search box I was pressing F6 again which was according to an
earlier tutorial on navigating iTunes. Much thanks. I'd swore
I'd pressed enter before a few times before to try to work this out
but maybe I was too impatient for the results or something, I don't
know. . Either way it works and I'm super grateful.

F6 is broken (Apple broke it in 10.2).
It's annoying but iTunes is still usable.
The tricky part is to get out of the iTunes store but there's a workaround.

To search the iTunes store:

- Select the iTunes store from the sources list.
You should hear a woosh-sound - this means that the page has loaded/refreshed.

- Now press F6 and you should land in the search box.
Type in what you are looking for and press Enter and wait for the woosh-sound.

- Press F6 to move focus to the iTunes store.
You may need to wait a while (I had to wait afew seconds) before you
start navigating the store.

Press ctrl-home to move to the top.
JAWS should announce iTunes Store or something similar.
You are good to go.
You can now navigate your search results with standard web
navigation (virtual cursor)

- When done or if you want to perform a new search:

Press Ctrl-Alt-f.
This will move focus to the search box.
Repeat the steps above to perform a new search.

If your intention is to get out of the iTunes store:

Press Ctrl-Alt-f to move focus to the search box.
Then press Shift-F6 and you should be back in the sources list.

This works, but let's hope Apple fixes the F6 key soon.

Re: [Blind-Computing] iTunes For Windows, F6 and no search results

2011-03-20 Thread Brad Dunse'

John,

The F6 button, once in the results area of iTunes does nothing in
some PCs. Once you are in there you are stuck. Tabbing and shift
tabbing only tabs you through links there in that window. The CTRL
Alt F routes you to the search field outside the results area where
you can once again use F6 or shift F6. I did get the results area
to work which is navigable by the normal web based navigation keys
such as H for headings, L for lists etc. Its all good now but thanks
for replying I appreciate that very much.

Folks, I have seen conflicting reports on the maximum RAM A windows 7 32
bit machine will support.

Is it true that a windows 7 32 bit machine will support only 3.25 gig of
RAM less the video Card? And, that the Windows 7 64 bit machines will
support over 4 gig of RAM up to ow much?

If someone knows I would appreciate some clarification on this. I am
most interested in the answer for a 32 bit machine and the maximum
amount of RAM that it will support.

I suppose it depends on the speed of the processor, width/speed of
the front side bus, and if you use the system heavy or not. I
think there is a limit to how much added RAM will help speed. e. g.
drinking one can of Red Bull might wake you up to do stuff faster but
4 cans isn't going to help much in that direction, you'll only go so
fast anyway :). I think for best performance it is best to have all
the same size RAM installed so that is something too. I guess if its

That is True for session usage if speed is not
the intent. There is a balance with the rest of
the system there. However, I run 1 gig of RAM
and really don't have much of any issues
unless I get a bit lax in closing apps not being
used plus running larger ones. . One could
increase virtual memory too. Depends if you are
running a lot of audio software/processing yes
but if it is average use even running Jaws, I'd
be saving the RAM bucks towards a newer machine
if it is an older XP machine. If bucks are an
issue and one is running large programs and that
would help with access to them yeah I might then drop some green for RAM :).

You can do this with any recording software. I use XP but it ought be
similar with Vista/Win 7.

1. Open your Volume utility press ALT and up arrow once to the properties
item.
2. Tab once and then if needed arrow up or down to the Playback
setting Press enter.
3. Then tab around to find your microphone setting and unmute it with the
checkbox.
4. Press Alt again and up arrow to properties again and tab once .
5. Arrow up or down to the recording setting and press enter 6. Tab
around and set it to the What You Hear option with the checkbox

If you have more than one sound device/card you'll have to make sure its the
one you want.

Then begin recording and it'll record your voice as it passes through your
sound card as well the screen reader doing same.

Hope that helps you out.

Re: [Blind-Computing] JAWS couldn't read winamp playlist anymore

2011-05-03 Thread Brad Dunse'
Had you tried closing WinAmp and restarting? Same goes for Jaws? Jaws
has a nasty habit when running for long times, on my system anyway,
of mucking up application key strokes. I've had it disable some hot
keys, and otherwise not red properly if I hadn't shut it down and
restarted it. I suspect when you restored teh reboot of Jaws and
perhaps yrou system helped. If you hadn't, in the future I'd try just
rebooting your system to see if that works. If you'd done this,
perhaps you installed another program or driver just prior to this happening?

HI. I just did a system restore, and it fixed this problem. But I thought
I would ask about this, just in case someone might have an idea, and I can
avoid doing whatever I did again.

Today, I was wanting to start a new playlist. I wasn't able to get rid of
the playlist already loaded in Winamp. I thought a control N would clear
it, but it didn't. OK. So, I tried a number of different keystrokes. I
tried control F4, and a few others I don't' recall.

When all was said and done, when I would go to the playlist, it wouldn't
read the tracks anymore. It would be blank, or it would act like it was

trying to read the ddesktop. I checked, and it said my skins were still set
to classic, so apparently I didn't change that setting. I don't know what I
did to mess it up, but it was a doozie.

Any thoughts? I mean it's all well and good now since the system restore
seems to have fixed it. But that was a disturbing turn of events that I
wouldn't have expected. It goes to show that just pressing keys to see what
will happen is not such a great idea as some advise to do.

This is version 5.581. Anything newer I already tried and it was a total
disaster, so I don't intend to ever upgrade Winamp again until I'm forced
to.

Any recommendations for a USB headset which would also serve as a
sound card, have higher quality mike and headphones, and of course
reasonable in price? I might alternatively be interested in a
cordless set as well.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have no idea how to explain this but here goes...

When I am geeking out to my music using winamp, using the vision that I
have
left (which isn't much) I notice the winamp window is taking up half of the
display.

However, when I use wmp this is not happening, so what's going on with
winamp?

Hope that made sense.

Thankyou.

Battery Life of the PM depends partly on how you use it.
But here's a comparison.
My laptop will run maybe 1.5-2 hours without being connected to power.
I can take my PM on a trip and use it all day and still have 80 percent of
battery left.
I think it is safe to say that the PM will work all day and need no more
than a charge once a day or even every couple days.
Without a screen or hard drive to power, battery life will be much longer.

and for blind individuals. Students range from folks that just want
to learn more about computers to be more self sufficient and
confident, to those wanting Cisco certification or A+ certification.
It is available for anyone throughout the world,

There is info at the address below, but trust me it is more laid back

midst of IT Essentials and entered with little to know ggeek
knowledge and learning a lot. They also have what is called
CaviCasts, which are couple hour demos on various applications and
etc. One recent demo was done by one of the developers of NVDA who
came in for QA and various walk throughs, another was a demo by
blind users of the incredibly affordable multi-track recording
software Reaper, other sessions were things like discussion of
backup methods and apps, use of effects in sound recordings, and a
range of topics. Its worth checking out.

Re: [Blind-Computing] connecting musical keyboards to a computer and what software is accessible?

2011-05-29 Thread Brad Dunse'
a electronic message from the keyboard to other devices.
More expensive keyboards capture the intensity (how hard the key was
pressed) as well as the note. It can also be used, with a separate MIDI
connector, as an output of the computer back to the musical keyboard. This
could be used to playback music previously captured from the keyboard,
perhaps slightly modified. Many bands heavily use this interface between
keyboards, sequencers, drum machines, and so on. A real musician can step
in here and elaborate. Computers can be attached to these devices to
perform many tasks. There is software to capture what you play on the
keyboard, to playback, mix with other sources and manipulate. The options
are endless. Software can replace most functions of an entire studio or
control instruments during a live performance. I even heard of software
that could generate sheet music of what was being played on the keyboard.
You would need hardware that provides these MIDI connectors. I used to have
a SoundBlaster card that had these connectors. They probably have many
different external boxes that connect to your computer by USB and converts
to MIDI signals. I guess the musical keyboard manufacturers could build
such an interface into the keyboard and provide a cheaper, more convenient
connector. I have not heard of such a keyboard. I even had such a
converter box for my Commodore 64! That was confusing because the MIDI
connectors are identical to the serial cable used by the hard drive as I
recall. Again, those more musically talented can recommend software once
they get a better idea what you would like to do.

Re: [Blind-Computing] skipe

2011-05-29 Thread Brad Dunse'
Do you have a separate sound card just for Jaws? What system are you
using? XP? It sounds to me like you could possibly have your
settings in Volume Control set to What I hear and then have your
microphone muted. I'd look in your Skype settings as was mentioned to
you before, if you are running a seperate sound card for Jaws, it
might be defaulting to it in Skype. If you are running just the one
card, check your Volume Control. If using XP do this:

1. Windows key and press P until you hear All Programs and right arrow once.

2. Press A until you hear accessories and right arrrow once

3. Arrow down until you see Entertainment and right arrow again once

4. Down arrow to Volume Control and press enter.

5. When Volume Control opens press the ALT key and wait for the menu
to open and then press up arrow once to Properties and press enter

6. In there you'll find what sound cards you have. If more than one,
find the one your system uses for its sounds, playing CDs etc. Then
tab once until you see the setting choices for play back and
record. Arrow to the recording option and press enter. Tab until
you hear it say What you Hear, as you tab the next check box status
you hear will be for it, if it is checked you'll need to keep tabbing
until you hear Microphone, then it'll have some volume and balance
percentages and maybe an advanced button and again a check box. Make
sure this is checked and see if that helps.

C. When you do the echo test call and press Jaws or PC cursor, does

D. In Skype, going to the Tools then options menu, and arrowing

I'm running an XP machine and haven't poked around on a Win 7 or

Do you have a separate sound card just for Jaws? What system are you using?
XP? It sounds to me like you could possibly have your settings in Volume
Control set to What I hear and then have your microphone muted. I'd look
in your Skype settings as was mentioned to you before, if you are running a
seperate sound card for Jaws, it might be defaulting to it in Skype. If you
are running just the one card, check your Volume Control. If using XP do
this:

1. Windows key and press P until you hear All Programs and right arrow once.

2. Press A until you hear accessories and right arrrow once

3. Arrow down until you see Entertainment and right arrow again once

4. Down arrow to Volume Control and press enter.

5. When Volume Control opens press the ALT key and wait for the menu to
open and then press up arrow once to Properties and press enter

6. In there you'll find what sound cards you have. If more than one, find
the one your system uses for its sounds, playing CDs etc. Then tab once
until you see the setting choices for play back and record. Arrow to the
recording option and press enter. Tab until you hear it say What you
Hear, as you tab the next check box status you hear will be for it, if it
is checked you'll need to keep tabbing until you hear Microphone, then it'll
have some volume and balance percentages and maybe an advanced button and
again a check box. Make sure this is checked and see if that helps.

If it is lost. If you know the file name or even part of it, try a
Windows Key plus F to search for it in the directories you think it
might be in, or just search the entire drive. When you find it then
with it highlighted in the results area of the search, try Alt Enter
to view the file properties. You can also use apps key, or right

go to the folder you want it in and paste it back in. Once found then
you can look at how it might have gotten there. Check your recycle
bin as well but if you search your drive and its in there it ought

Re: [Blind-Computing] mass unavailability

2011-07-06 Thread Brad Dunse'
Risking sounding over simplistic but just to be clear. In order to
find the properties of something , you have to be on the file itself
as in My Documents or My Computer in Windows Explorer , or have the
file open. You can find the properties of anything but you have to be
on or in something. Where is it you are trying to find the
properties. 99 percent of computer users don't fiddle in there for
just general usage, so maybe there's another way to do what ever it
is you are trying to accomplish?

Can you tell me what screen you are in when you try to access the
properties? Some sort of activity like the sample below would be helpful.

1. I open My Documents
2. I highlight an xls file by arrowing to it
3. I press the Apps key and arrow to properties
4. And the option is grayed out.

Or

In My Documents where I keep my XLS files, I've tried opening 8
different file properties and all of those file extensions have
grayed out or unavailable properties. I noticed this problem a month
ago after my grand kid was messing around in my file association
options and I told him to get away from my computer *smile*.

Some sort of additional info of where you are at in the computer is
needed to help you out.

If you just open up Excel without any spreadsheet and go under the
File menu to Properties it will be grayed out yes.

2011-07-06 Thread Brad Dunse'

A. Do you know these people?
B. Is it a necessary email?
C. ActiveX can implant/run some nasty stuff on your computer. There
is a reason the security is flagging it.

Personally unless it was something from a work project or the like
that is needed. I'd not activate it. I'd also recommend if they are
friends who sent it, , and its a cutsie forward or unneeded email and
they've checked it out, that they do a couple scans of their
computer. Not on-line scans but update their antivirus signature
files/updates then scan it. And also download something like Malware
Bytes and do a second scan. No one anti-virus gets all virus. Do
only have one anti-virus actively running in the background though.
Keep like Malware Bytes as a scan only to catch stuff your main one
might tmiss.

Do a Google Search for ActiveX viruses danger and just scroll
through the link summaries there.

When you do a search for files on the system , it will find every
file with that criteria. In other words if you have a file called
Cliff's Bingo Chart.xls, and you have it in your My Documents, and
then maybe on a back up drive or the like, it'll find them both. One
might be newer than the other depending on a backup date. If you
search for Cliff's, it'll find every file with Cliff's in the
name. The versions you've seen could be the recovered
files in Excel which were waiting to be either saved or deleted
too I suppose, I don't have any to check out. You might not be able
to move those. Probably the best thing to do in that case is open the
files you want to save right from the search results area and then
just do a Save As... and put them where you want.

FYI to verify, I successfully tested moving a file within the search
results area to a different spot in My Documents by arrowing to it
within the search results, , pressing Alt Enter to look at the
properties to find out where it was located. **You'll need to
Jaws/Review cursor to find the location in the properties area
unless there's a hot key , I just Jaws cursor.** Once I found out
where it was located I made note of it, pressed Escape, made sure it
was highlighted in the results area again. pressed Ctrl X, went into
My Documents and pasted with Ctrl V to a different spot. Then
verified in Windoes Explorer it was in fact gone from the original spot.

Depending on the printer and how it feeds the envelope. Yes print
on a sheet of regular paper and if it starts printing right off
without a bit of feed time you know it is printing the return address
first, which would give you the orientation of the envelope, top to
the left. If there's a bit of time feeding before it prints, then
it is printing the mailing address first, making it top to the right..

You could simply use a sheet of paper to print the envelope information,

On My HP printer, I put the envelope in the bypass, so that it is properly

This works well.
Incidentally, when I tell it to print, an HP menu comes up for which I have

Then I can go back to the PC cursor.

2011-07-18 Thread Brad Dunse'
Update your Eset signature files, though I assume
you had done that , but doesn't hurt to mention
it, then do a scan. I'd also download a
free/trial copy of Malware Bytes and update its
files and do another scan. If you haven't done a
second software scan on your computer in a
while, you might just fined something slinking
around in there :). Not one virus protection
software gets them all. Malware Bytes is very
very good and its speech friendly too.

Has anyone tried a repair on windows 7 home? I have
m.republicianherald.com for the mobile version of our newspaper.
When I click on the link prior to the local temp it brings up an
accuweather page for my home town. Now on that page there is an
extended forecast. When I click on that it displays state
college weather. However, the actual address has my zip code. I
ran 3 different spyware programs including combofix. It has not
corrected the problem. I then used firefox with the same result
so it has to be in my system. My wife?™s lap top works fine. A
few months ago a similar problem was there only the site that it
tried to take me to was listed as profanity. I ran eset and the
same anti spyware programs and combofix made a registry change
that corrected the problem. It now is not making the correction.

Please visit my home page, it is motivational, educational,
inspirational with a touch of humor. There is also a very
extensive resource list for the blind.

[Blind-Computing] Win7 Sound option gone?

2011-07-21 Thread Brad Dunse'

Stil figuring out Win7 a bit here. I wanted to disable a playback
option in Win 7's Sound applet in Control Panel because I believe
I inadvertently picked it for NVDA to use, which is now silent
because I'm not sure that integrated sound device is really turned
on. So rather than that happening again, I went into Sound, to the
Playback tab, and disabled the ATI option there. Much to my surprise
it just disappeared from the list rather than hang around as a
disabled option. Any clue how to get this back on the playback
listing without doing a system restore? I don't use it but this is a
new machine and I don't know if I'd want to or not and would like
the option in the future.

Microsoft might benefit from the saying Don't make permanent

Re: [Blind-Computing] WIFI Password

2011-07-23 Thread Brad Dunse'
Net Gear, at least here I think had default log in info of admin as
username and password is password. Could have been just the
password with an empty user too I can't recall. You ought find that
with a Google bit. Either way when you do get logged in I'd highly
recommend changing those. I know of no default pass key for security
(WPA, WPA2, etc.). Once you log on the router though just go to the
wireless setting that is not in the advanced area, if there are two
of them there. Pick the WPA2, put in your pass key, writing it down
someplace for future 'smile', and hit OK and you'll be good to go.
For additional security you can hide the broadcast of your wireless
network and filter out any devices/computers from accessing your
network, or help anyway, with MAC address filtering.

Hi, if you hardwire the computer to the router, you should be able to find
the password under the wireless category when you log into the router.

Of course, if you don't have the log on information for the router, then I'm
afraid there's nothing you can do except reset the router to it's factory
defaults, Google the default Username and password, and reset all of the
Usernames and passwords again.

You can do this by taking a unbent paper clip, and sticking into the reset
hole on the outside of the router's case.

Just make sure you select the WPA2 encryption, as WEP is way too easy to
crack.

[Blind-Computing] Office/Excel 2010 Unhiding columns

2011-07-24 Thread Brad Dunse'
Am I the only one thinking MS totally trashed the menu system in
Office 2010? Anyone have a clue how to unhide columns in Excel 2010?
Previous versions use to do it with hot key Shift Ctrl right
parenthesis or 0 basically. Similar older hot keys work for hiding
and unhiding rows but they've taken away the unhide coluns shortcut
and its like nowhere to be found in the ribbon menus. Nothing like
bringing productivity to a screeching halt.

then tab twice and you will be on the taskbar - if you tab again you will be

[Blind-Computing] Clipboard and computer delay

2012-05-30 Thread Brad Dunse
I wonder if anyone else has this issue. I can't say when this started or if
it was even always there on this newer machine. I'm using Wind 7, 64 bit and
Office 2010.

The issue is often, but not always, when I copy something to the clipboard
while in Word, the computer just hangs for about ten seconds. I thought it
maybe it was scanning or something.

I thought maybe some sort of virus too, but I run McAffy and Malware Bytes,
and though I see this happened similar to others on a Google search, I
didn't' see a definite solution, at least not one I was willing to go
clicking around the net on unknown domains for supposed fixes.

Is there some sort of clipboard setting I can't find to shut something off?
I don't' know if it is Office clipboard or Windows clipboard but I suspect
Office clipboard. I see clipboard items in my system tray as well. I did use
the apps key and clicked stop collecting which seemed to help temporarily,
but I see they're back now. Must have been after closing office or
something. Anyway it's frustrating waiting for it from time to time.

I'd seen this before, and evidently back then did exactly what you said
twice in a row not seeing any options or difference in a status, and
very likely dismissedly and unknowingly toggled it back on again. So far it
seems to have worked with the delay.

The only thing different I did in case anyone needs to ajust it, was I
needed to arrow down to the Clipboards sub menu and then arrow to the Office
Clipboard button and hit enter.

Too bad they don't' show it with a status on or off. Anyway, thanks I think
this will do it.

other messages in a browser, or having to copy/paste them to a notepad doc
to view them? I'm on a business related group and find myself not
participating as I should due to the pain in the backside in reading the
messages. I hadn't found a setting rooting around, so thought to ask here.

Thanks.

This was my question :). The only way so far, which I hope there is another

Messsage tab, to move to Actions to View in browser. Another way is to
copy the body and paste to notepad. Both are not time efficient.

Re: [Blind-Computing] MS Word 2010 text missing letters as I type

2012-06-28 Thread Brad Dunse
For a simple try, I'd plug in a different keyboard and see if that helps.
Double spacing can happen if changed in the Style settings under the Home
tab. I have had this too when posting to a list, all spaces become double,
but not on all lists. In that case it is a conversion issue. Word is kind of
known for messing things up that way when pasting/posting. It could be your
keyboard with sticking keys, and you pressed a hot key unknowingly. Worth
trying a different keyboard unless you are using a mechanical one now, they
have far less issues.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] MS Word 2010 text missing letters as I type

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this problem belongs in the computer or JAWS list, perhaps
either. I'm using Win 7, MS Word 2010, and JAWS 12. I'm an accurate typist.
When reviewing text I have typed using Word 2010 and JAWS 12, there are
frequent words that have a letter missing. For example, catg, may show up
as, ct, or the word typed as, me, may show up as, m, with the letter e
missing. I make the spelling corrections, but when I send a finished text
article to my sighted sister, via Outlook 2012 for posting on internet, she
gets it with spelling mistakes, also sometimes with changes in font style,
and with some double spacing she cannot correct.

Never had this trouble with prior systems, XP and before, Word 2003 and
before. Seems my problem starts with using JAWS 12 and Word 2010. Any
suggestions?

Really would appreciate help since I write articles for posting at least
once a week. Many thanks in advance for suggestions.

[Blind-Computing] Ed Sharp and Jaws

2012-06-30 Thread Brad Dunse
I'm testing out the text editor Ed Sharp. When I do a spell check on it, there
are times it will just take out Jaws. I've narrowed it down to it happening
when I tab to see the suggested correction.

If I Alt Tab off the checker, or minimize, I'll get speech back but not right
away. Sometimes I've got to close Word to get it back, because Ed Sharp uses
Word's spell checker.

Does anyone use Ed Sharp and have suggestion or similar issue?

I'd thought of uninstalling and reinstaling it, and opting out of the scripts
that come with it.

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Baffling security message

2013-04-05 Thread Brad Dunse
I have two questions per the below.

Using Jaws 14, Win 7, and G-Data Internet Security; I'd recently been
periodically hearing a help balloon say, G-data Internet Security is not
running click here to start G-Data Internet Security.

I get same, but not all the time, with Windows Defender, though I had that
turned off because of G-Data running, an dit is indeed off.

I've had my wife look at the status icons of G-Data and it shows on, I look
in the system tray and I get options of disable firewall, disable virus
protection, etc. so I assume it is on. I've looked in the process and
services running and the firewall and G-Data scan is running. I've looked in
msconfig and G-Data is set to start at start up. So I asume it's up and
running as it should.

Unless for some reason as with other programs, when they are busy Windows 7,
which is classic for me anyway, will mis inform a program is not running,
when in fact it is just under heavy load at the time, such as Quickbooks
when backing up.

G-Data goes out to the net and checks for virus updates every 45-minutes or
so, and though I haven't connected that dot yet, but I wonder if that is
why?

How can I access or click this help balloon before it disappears, I've tried
to find it but maybe there's a Jaws hot key?

Any clues to why this message?

Thanks,

Brad

Re: [Blind-Computing] Google Chrome question

2013-04-11 Thread Brad Dunse
Thanks for your reply. Part of the problem though of running older browsers
is vulnerability to security issues. My last computer found its death by
nasties that got in, not necessarily form a browser security hole. At any
rate I'm not too in favor of leaving any holes if possible, even at the cost
of some accessibility.

Firefox works some of the time without hanging, but it's unpredictable. I
could try looking to see if I missed removing any add-ons other than my
security software add-ons and see if that helps. I actually used Chrome
today to finish placing my on-line business orders and it ran flawlessly ;D.
Very responsive and stable. Explorer crashed no less than 5-times in a half
an hour. I use to swear by Firefox, my wife too. She was directed by the IT
department at work to use Chrome as it is the most secure and stable at this
point. Granted she is sighted, but I know there are folks using screen
readers with Chrome, apparently successfully.

Thanks,

Brad

I'm using Google Chrome with JAWS 12. I haven't had any problems with
it. It's my everyday browser. I've used Firefox before, but I don't like
it. It's sort of slow at times, stops working, other times JAWS stops
responding. IE was alright, but I wouldn't go back. I'm quite satisfied
with Chrome.

Jaws

 Hi Mike,

Actually I have no problems opening and closing a drop down list box. My
problem is that a lot of code is written so that as soon as you move down
with the arrow key, it makes that first selection your choice
automatically
and sends you off to whatever that choice is.

I would like to go up and down through those lists without it making a
selection automatically so I can see all of the choices before selecting
one

 on my own.

 Thanks,

 Ken

I've noticed that earlier versions of Jaws reads things V14 won't. I wonder
if that is the issue? Jaws cursor reads absolutely nothing on the screen. I
might have to call tech support to find out why. So far, I really like
Chrome's responsiveness.
