I remember when 'the masses' were crying for a USB connection. Our
great sages at Elecraft kept suggesting that compatibility issues
would come along with USB et al.

Guess this would have been one ( or could have been one) if the USB
was a few years ago, and our designers were not as slick as they are.

It appears now MS needs to accommodate some slight missteps.

my apple II, which I still have..
loaded the os from a cassette tape ( still have that also)

the floppy drives came later.

I sold for a company called Mountain Computer...
that had a 5M 1200$ hard drive add on for the apple II and the IBM PC
(it had no hard drive till the XT) still might have that

O yes... one of our illustrious founders was the chief engineer at
Mountain Computer about then.

One of the interesting pieces of that history, from a retail consumer
user's (layman's) point of view, is that the Apple II (I owned a II+ in
the late 1970s) used MS-DOS as its operating system before Apple developed
its own. As I recall, the OS was not resident in the early hardware - to
use it you first loaded DOS in through a 5 floppy, then used another 5
floppy for data. (My memory is imperfect, but I believe that was
correct.) The original IBM PC also had 5 floppy drives. One was for the
App (such as WordStar) and the other for the data files. The 3 disk was
a much later development, and a great leap forward. The IBM PC, which I
bought in 1982 plus or minus a couple of years, cost me $5,000 in the
dollars of the day.

The most significant development, which some folks today don't remember or
never knew, is that e-mail and the Internet began as separate systems.
E-mail used ordinary phone lines in its earliest days. I remember well
sitting in airport boarding lounges with a set of alligator clips and a
screwdriver which I used to remove the cap from the modular telephone
jacks so I could dial up other members of our e-mail network. I don't
recall the year, but I do remember that when e-mail was merged with the
Internet the whole world changed.

The idea of controlling my radio equipment with my computer in the 70s
never occurred to me . . . .

Do I have that history right?

Actually Don, the Apple II preceded the IBM PC and had a very strong
following. As the owner of a consulting firm that placed some Apple IIs
doing some difficult, at that time, interfacing to main frames we
welcomed the appearance of the IBM PC when it came on the scene. We had
the second IBM PC in Birmingham and after a couple of days of evaluation
recompiled our software and the rest was history.

Desktop computers did not come into being until the advent of the IBM

drives and 64k of ram for her to use in her college classes. It was
later upgraded with a 5 MB hard drive which replaced one of the floppy
 drives (3.5 inch floppys).

We have come a long way since that time. That system cost $2500 at
the time, now I can buy a computer with a LOT more capability for less
 than $300.

90% reduction may sound good but it's only ~10 dB, which is typical for most

you should be looking for 30 dB, which is available in both in-ear and

I'm also a MARS op, and have used the KX3 mobile for MARS ops. The
only issue I've found is making sure that the antenna is resonant.
Standard-cut ham band resonators need mods sometimes, but if you're
working with one of the screwdriver types of mobile antennas this is
 not a problem.

With the shorter length antennas (Hustler in my case), the 100W amp
is borderline mandatory, though I have worked a number of nets and
events from the mobile without the amp: SSB, MT63, Thor, etc.

Note also that I'm updating the Mobile User Guide. There will be some
major structural and content refinements on the next go-around. Since
I've decided to redo my mobile, I'll be document that development as
 it moves along.

If you're interested, I accept docs for inclusion in the mobile guide
and give credits. So far no one's taken me up on this. :)

what does the rig's output see at the input to the tuner when the

think about it an offshore company builds a microphone or
actually buys an electret element and just stuffs it into a case... (

which would bother it's use in our stringent application./...
   So now we have a $.45 element a nice fancy cabinet/shell.. $
3.-4 :.still NO engineering or MARKETING expense,,,
  a cable with a plug ( add .$70)...if a headset , add two earpieces
if a headset...

and tada enter cyberguys... who is selling a DCT
FACTORY headset for$ 7.89. so also Amazon( newegg $19.95) go figure
http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=2427

As with all generic stuff,...once the generics hit the market, the
branded stuff has to figure how to compete with the guy who may be
making it for himOMG,,,
generics have no 40% to market the product,,but since they will sell
to anyone, the marketplace discovers it.

Do we really think a yamaha factory makes that headset
??? wrongo,..they market it.

I have not ordered those 8$ headsets , since i bought three generics
at dayton.. I think 3 for 9$
I WAS lucky and they worked great ,at field day on k3 ...and
mobile on the kx3
just make certain that you get 3.5mm plugs for both the headphone
the mic,.,,,

someone else can try ...

I opened up the bottom , top back Fan assembly.
From the bottom, with the set upside down, let the Hakko do it magic

Not only is the enclosure and air system tight it is sound

one swapped from an old telephone set ( you know the junkers) that
used an electret ,.,,,
set the bias on, tweak up the EQ IF preferred,,,and have a great
sounding d-104...

I put one in front of a dynamic cartridge in one of my old AKGs, not
acoustically correct but worked great for ssb... and had dual outputs
... one dynamic and one hot electret

I reverted to another older rig where the two rcvrs have separate

Jim,

All the more reason to buy American products! I owned a couple of Yaseu HF

rigs in the past and I was more than dis-pleased with their service dept.
In one instance, the SWR protection circuit went out in my 1000D; sent it
back telling them what the problem was (or what caused the final transistors

to burn out). I even called and was told that, O yes the purported tech
I talked to said that the radio was fixed right. Well, when I got it back,
all they did was replace the finals.

As far as I am concerned, any ham who buys a Yaesu or Icom HF radio is a
fool and uninformed. Both the K3 and O2 will run circles around any of the
other rigs (maybe with the exception of the SDR radios).

And when you talk about service, both Ten Tec and Elecraft are top notch.
You are so right when you say you get to talk to a tech, not some idiot that

is a go between and not familiar with the radio.

That is my 2 cents worth.

Dick K8ZTT

PS Unfotunately we don't have a lot of choices with the VHF/UHF equipment,
but at least it is not a big investment if it goes up in smoke.

Subject: [Elecraft] Yaesu versus Elecraft Service

(Copy of a posting I sent today to the Yaesu FT-2000 reflector,
  contrasting
Yaesu and Elecraft technical support. I believe it speaks for itself.)

   _

  From: Jim Garland [mailto:4cx2...@muohio.edu]
  Sent: Sunday, July 05, 2009 11:22 AM
  To: 'ft-2...@yahoogroups.com'
  Subject: Update: Yaesu Service

Two weeks ago I posted a note here about Yaesu's policy of not allowing
customers to speak to service technicians, instead referring inquiries to
customer support personnel who were unfamiliar with the inner workings of
Yaesu products. This is the same policy used by auto dealers, who insert a
customer service manager between a customer and mechanic, or computer
manufacturers whose support personnel answer technical questions by
  reading
  from a prepared script.

In my case, I had questions about the first mixer stage in my FT-2000D,
which I suspected had failed. I had traced the signal path to the mixer
  with
an oscilloscope, but wasn't sure how to interpret the output signal. I
couldn't tell from the circuit diagram how much bias current the mixer
  FETs
were supposed to draw, what the conversion loss from the mixer was (after
taking into account losses and turns ratios of the coupling transformers),
whether this was a common failure mode in the radio and what the likely
cause was, and whether there were any useful pointers in replacing the
  tiny
  surface mount mixer IC.

Unable to get anwers, I didn't want to take a chance plunging ahead with
  the
repair myself, so I ended up sending the radio back to Yaesu. The repair
bill came to $187 plus another $90 round trip shipping. Incidentally, the
first mixer is nothing special; it is a garden variety IC that costs about
  $4.

By coincidence, I also had a failure in my Elecraft K3, which had suddenly
stopped transmitting during a recent 6m contest. I called Elecraft and was
immediately put through to a service technician. I explained my problem
  and
he asked me a few questions about my electronics background and what sort
  of
test equipment I had on my workbench. He decided that I had enough enough
experience to fix the problem myself, and we agreed that I would call him
back after putting my K3 on my test bench and removing the covers.

Later that day, I called him back and, together, we traced the signal path
through the transmitter. I had the phone in one hand and a scope probe in
the other. In a matter of 20 minutes, we determined that the push-pull
  FETs
in the driver stage had shorted. He mailed me replacement FETs which came
  in
three days. Ten minutes after opening the

Re: [Elecraft] who owns more than one K2, and why?

2009-05-12 Thread Bill NY9H

started out with sn#260,,, as a qrp /mobile/battery system in a pelican case
then added the KA100/ KAT 100 in an EC2 enclosure.
Then I perforated the front of the EC2 for two elipitical
speakers...on the front.
That also in a pelican case

then I obtained a sn#3200 k2/100 with external tuner.. for the
shack station along side an Icom.

The station K2 got replaced by a K3... so I need to figure out
which set to sell... or maybe both .

and this is how I ended up with 2 k2s.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction..revisited

2009-04-29 Thread Bill NY9H
I have two Hear-it speakers from England's BHI company hooked thru
my microham controller's headphone outputwhich is connected to
the 7800 the K3.

With a low- mid aggressive setting they don't sound anything but
quieter. (what a concept)... leave them in line most all the time.

No gurgling, whooshing... or D-Star audio emulations.
(Much better than the NCT licensed stuff Clearspeech/Heil now West
Mountain Radio).

Granted if I was using a GrandioseSweetness18 3 way, I might have a
different outcome. Then again I could pipe it thru my UREI
time-aligned monitors.

40 years in the audio business.tells me the BHI algorithm is a
winner whatever they are doing ...I wish Lyle would do ( if the
DSP can handle it )
And I do know the existing design does it the other way .

Seems we revisit this one about every 118 days..

I was convinced how effective RF clipping can be. G3LLL was careful
to indicate that you should roll off the bottom end... so as to not
totally overburden your powersupply with the extended duty cycle
using such a device on ssb. I have played with and still have
Datong, Daiwa, MFJ and TenTec's earlier rf clippers. When set
properly you will NOT get complaints of turn off that processor...
just compliments. Most recently using a slightly modified TenTec
version. With the latest iterations from Lyle on the K3...making it
'crunch' better, I will be soon be looking for new home for the pile.

google on RF processing ssb
something to understand and appreciate on the K3 or other radios.

and I HATE bad audio... nasty clipping effects, distracting distortions...etc

What I would like to see is a totally interchangeable main and sub.
I want to be able to switch sub for main in a way that the sub rx is
acting like the main without a shadow of a difference. Right now if
I press Sub I can change sub rx settings but I can't change

I would like to be able to operate as if the Sub were main and the
Main were Sub and vice versus perhaps by pressing a single button.

frequencies are attenuated. I think this works quite well as a
primitive extra audio filter. While the settings are great for CW,
they are no good (obviously) for speech. Does anyone know if such a
home brew AF filter CW response curve setting could be stored
using say PF1 button, and then be reset to a flat response using
say PF2? Otherwise it gets fiddly and time-consuming to keep
tweaking each of the eight filter frequencies.

RE: [Elecraft] k3 : Split Operation

2008-10-05 Thread Bill NY9H

when clicking on a DX4WIN spot, I now need to click twice...
once for the freq and a second time if the mode is different

also when split is called for, the vfo b gets it , but the K3 only
flashes split then retains the non split mode.

The ICOM goes to split and gets the vfo freq mode , as one would expect.

Frequently when I split on CW, I find I have to go thru the
steps of changing the mode on VFO B.

Why not have a feature that switches it to CW if I hit the
 key within 5 seconds?

[Elecraft] keyer with CW decode memory programming

2008-09-28 Thread Bill NY9H

if you use the K3's internal keyer (paddle input).
It doesn't work when straight key or external keyer. The Manual could
be more definite on this point, it seems to come up often.

Bob NW8L

AND... as I forgot yesterday, your paddle hooked up to your keyer
will NOT program the K3 internal memories eithergotta be direct
to the K3 paddle input.

   K3 filters

We don't care about the sample rate or bit depth too much, but the data
needs to be obtainable by the computer in a manageable way, such as through
an extension of the existing CAT command set. Given the choice of modifying
their K3 or just plugging something into the back, I think most people would
opt for the latter, even though it would entail an unnecessary D to A and
back to D again step.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 Issue - Jumper W4.... rtfm

2008-08-25 Thread Bill NY9H
It IS in the instructions that our older boards had a wire which
needed to be cut

and that jumper is indeed partially hidden by the bandpass board,

That jumper's location could be better identified in the instructions,
as I recall it is to the rear of that jumper block, not in front of it .

It went in fine and does work great still calmly awaiting the
firmware to allow being able to split it off to another band.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 competition from Icom 7700? yes

2008-08-25 Thread Bill NY9H
Of course it is competition ( IC 7700 ), as some will buy it rather
than the K3.

It is however an apples and oranges comparison...

The 7700 has dual watch which is just like the 756PIII, much better
than no second receiverbut far far from a full second
receiver( it can't split the main dual watch
audio, just vary the audio level between the two) still need the
7800 for 2 receivers.

The Pro3 is a great piece of product extremely well executed.
The Pro3 scope I prefer to the scope on the 7800.maybe the 7700
is different.

I use a scope on the K3 now LP-PAN /or SDR-IQ works great.

As far a performance parameters...you can read,

RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 Issue - Jumper W4.... rtfm

2008-08-25 Thread Bill NY9H

nope, the jumper it is NOT between , as described in the manual

I sent this note to support :on July 16th,,,

the w4 jumper is NOT between the w4 jumper block and the Kio boards,
I kept looking to make certain i was looking at the w4
jumper(which I was)

and you do need to take out the general coverage board to get access
to clip it ( w4) cleanly... it went right into # 44

bill

And since it was contradictory to the instructions in the manual
i rechecked it a zillion times ... checked the schemo... then cut w4

For Ron I have attached a pix, which will get stripped by the
reflector for the crowd.
While there is a jumper located as described , W4 is just in front of
the connector.

Yep. The soldered jumper on the older boards is between the connector and

Early on Wayne moved it to a plug-in jumper in the connector because it was
hard to get to the soldered jumper on the RF board. Besides, if one wanted
to use the K3 with the KRX3 removed it's necessary to replace that jumper as
described in the manual.
