Re: [Elecraft] Computers in the Stone Age
my apple II, which I still have.. loaded the os from a cassette tape ( still have that also) the floppy drives came later. I sold for a company called Mountain Computer... that had a 5M 1200$ hard drive add on for the apple II and the IBM PC (it had no hard drive till the XT) still might have that O yes... one of our illustrious founders was the chief engineer at Mountain Computer about then. bill ny9h/3 At 12:52 PM 5/28/2014, Dauer, Edward wrote: One of the interesting pieces of that history, from a retail consumer user's (layman's) point of view, is that the Apple II (I owned a II+ in the late 1970s) used MS-DOS as its operating system before Apple developed its own. As I recall, the OS was not resident in the early hardware - to use it you first loaded DOS in through a 5 floppy, then used another 5 floppy for data. (My memory is imperfect, but I believe that was correct.) The original IBM PC also had 5 floppy drives. One was for the App (such as WordStar) and the other for the data files. The 3 disk was a much later development, and a great leap forward. The IBM PC, which I bought in 1982 plus or minus a couple of years, cost me $5,000 in the dollars of the day. The most significant development, which some folks today don't remember or never knew, is that e-mail and the Internet began as separate systems. E-mail used ordinary phone lines in its earliest days. I remember well sitting in airport boarding lounges with a set of alligator clips and a screwdriver which I used to remove the cap from the modular telephone jacks so I could dial up other members of our e-mail network. I don't recall the year, but I do remember that when e-mail was merged with the Internet the whole world changed. The idea of controlling my radio equipment with my computer in the 70s never occurred to me . . . . Do I have that history right? As the owner of a consulting firm that placed some Apple IIs doing some difficult, at that time, interfacing to main frames we welcomed the appearance of the IBM PC when it came on the scene. We had the second IBM PC in Birmingham and after a couple of days of evaluation recompiled our software and the rest was history. 73s Jim, W4ATK On 5/27/2014 9:31 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: And those computers Tom Watson was speaking of took a large controlled environment room just for the various pieces. Standard-cut ham band resonators need mods sometimes, but if you're working with one of the screwdriver types of mobile antennas this is not a problem. With the shorter length antennas (Hustler in my case), the 100W amp is borderline mandatory, though I have worked a number of nets and events from the mobile without the amp: SSB, MT63, Thor, etc. Note also that I'm updating the Mobile User Guide. There will be some major structural and content refinements on the next go-around. Since I've decided to redo my mobile, I'll be document that development as it moves along. ( bookshelves) . In my new shack cabinetwhen finished, the air from on top behind the ICOM K3, as well as the kpa500 is sucked out the back into an enclosure on the wall of the adjacent room.,where the ACOM also is located. Then the air pumped either into the garage ( summer mode) or back into the shack room ( winter/heater mode). I even called and was told that, O yes the purported tech I talked to said that the radio was fixed right. Well, when I got it back, all they did was replace the finals. As far as I am concerned, any ham who buys a Yaesu or Icom HF radio is a fool and uninformed. Both the K3 and O2 will run circles around any of the other rigs (maybe with the exception of the SDR radios). And when you talk about service, both Ten Tec and Elecraft are top notch. This is the same policy used by auto dealers, who insert a customer service manager between a customer and mechanic, or computer manufacturers whose support personnel answer technical questions by reading from a prepared script. In my case, I had questions about the first mixer stage in my FT-2000D, which I suspected had failed. I had traced the signal path to the mixer with an oscilloscope, but wasn't sure how to interpret the output signal. I couldn't tell from the circuit diagram how much bias current the mixer FETs were supposed to draw, what the conversion loss from the mixer was (after taking into account losses and turns ratios of the coupling transformers), whether this was a common failure mode in the radio and what the likely cause was, and whether there were any useful pointers in replacing the tiny surface mount mixer IC. Unable to get anwers, I didn't want to take a chance plunging ahead with the repair myself, so I ended up sending the radio back to Yaesu. The repair bill came to $187 plus another $90 round trip shipping. Incidentally, the first mixer is nothing special; it is a garden variety IC that costs about $4. By coincidence, I also had a failure in my Elecraft K3, which had suddenly stopped transmitting during a recent 6m contest. I called Elecraft and was immediately put through to a service technician. I explained my problem and he asked me a few questions about my electronics background and what sort of test equipment I had on my workbench. He decided that I had enough enough experience to fix the problem myself, and we agreed that I would call him back after putting my K3 on my test bench and removing the covers. Later that day, I called him back and, together, we traced the signal path through the transmitter. I had the phone in one hand and a scope probe in the other. In a matter of 20 minutes, we determined that the push-pull FETs in the driver stage had shorted. He mailed me replacement FETs which came in three days. Ten minutes after opening the

The 7700 has dual watch which is just like the 756PIII, much better than no second receiverbut far far from a full second receiver( it can't split the main dual watch audio, just vary the audio level between the two) still need the 7800 for 2 receivers.
