[MARMAM] Authors wanted for pinniped chapters of Handbook of Marine Mammals, 2nd ed.
Dear MARMAMers, There is a clear need for an easily-accessible up-to-date, citable source that provides a comprehensive literature review of biological knowledge on all marine mammal species of the world. The first edition of the Handbook of Marine Mammals did an admirable job of solving these problems in the late twentieth century, but now, more than 22 years later, the need is again quite acute. This second edition of the Handbook of Marine Mammals is intended mainly to update the six volumes of the first edition, though we intend to extend it to seven volumes, to account for the increased number of species and knowledge on each. The general format of the books and of the chapters will be very similar to those of the first edition. I am leading this effort as the main editor, with Sam H. Ridgway included as my co-editor (posthumous contribution). The books will again be published by Academic Press/Elsevier. If you are interested in writing a chapter on any of the pinnipeds or sirenians for this series, please contact me. You will have several years to complete the chapter, so there is no rush. Dear MARMAMers, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the publication of the following paper: Jefferson, T. A., M. A. Smultea and E. J. Ward. (2023). Distribution and Abundance of California (Zalophus californianus) and Steller (Eumetopias jubatus) Sea Lions in the Inshore Waters of Washington, 2013-2016. Aquatic Mammals, 49, 366-381. https://doi.org/10.1578/am.49.4.2023.366ABSTRACT: Two species of sea lions occur in the inlandwaters of Washington State, the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) and Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus). Both species breed elsewhere, but typically moveinto Puget Sound and adjacent waters of the Salish Sea from autumn throughspring months. There is a need forinformation on their current abundance and seasonal use patterns, as bothspecies prey heavily on threatened/endangered stocks of salmon and steelheadtrout (Oncorhynchus spp.), andempirical abundance estimates of these species are lacking for inlandWashington waters. From 2013-2016, we conducted 39,399 km of aerial surveys formarine mammals in this area, sighting 255 groups of sea lions. We used a subset of 7,841 km of effort and165 sea lion sightings made during surveys in good sighting conditions toestimate in-water abundance using line-transect methods. Historical tagging data collected in PacificNorthwest waters were used to evaluate the proportions of time that eachspecies spent on land and conducting dives, and then to develop correctionfactors to derive total abundance for both sea lion species, providing the firstempirical abundance estimates for these waters. We estimated that between 33 and 442 California sea lions were found inPuget Sound/Hood Canal in different seasons, with nearly 3,000 being found in thebroader inland Washington waters in the peak season (spring). Steller sea lions occurred in much smallernumbers, with a peak of 219 animals in Puget Sound/Hood Canal/Strait of Juan deFuca in autumn (and possibly as many as 600-700 in the entire study area). Whilesome estimates suffer from low precision, this study demonstrates thatsubstantial numbers of sea lions use waters of the study area throughout muchof the year. Our results provide animportant step toward better understanding of these two species in the inlandwaters of Washington, as well as their potential effects on protected salmonidprey species. The paper is available upon request or from the Aquatic Mammals website. Tom Jefferson ___ MARMAM mailing list MARMAM@lists.uvic.ca https://lists.uvic.ca/mailman/listinfo/marmam

Dear MARMAMers, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the publication of the following paper: Jefferson, T. A., E. A. Becker and S. L. Huang. (2023). Influences of natural and anthropogenic habitat variables on Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins Sousa chinensis in Hong Kong. Endangered Species Research, 51, 143-160. https://doi.org/10.3354/esr01249ABSTRACT: Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins Sousa chinensis in Hong Kong (HK) waters are part of a large (ca. 2000−2500), but declining, population that occurs in the Pearl River Estuary of southern China. To understand the factors that may influence dolphin densities in 4 different parts of HK, a 25 yr (1996−2020) database containing 66 439 km of line-transect survey effort and 4052 dolphin sightings was used. Seventeen variables representing natural and anthropogenic habitat factors were evaluated using generalized additive models (GAMs) to identify the preferred habitat of humpback dolphins in HK waters. In the environmental GAMs, rainfall, salinity, and river discharge were significant factors related to dolphin density, consistent with their observed strong preference for estuarine habitat. Sea surface temperature was also important for one of the 4 subareas. In the anthropogenic GAMs, the only significant variable was the amount of habitat area lost to land reclamation in North Lantau. This finding is consistent with previous hypotheses that heavy coastal engineering in North Lantau has contributed to observed declines in dolphin abundance during the study period. This study provides some of the first quantitative indications of factors that are potentially influencing the density of the animals in various parts of HK. As such, it will be a valuable tool for evaluating and mitigating potential impacts of both natural and anthropogenic factors on the population in the future. The paper is open access. Dear MARMAMers, I am pleased to announce the publication of the following paper: Jefferson, T. A. (2023). Marine mammals of the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838–1842: history and taxonomy. Archives of Natural History, 50, 101-117. https://doi.org/10.3366/anh.2023.0831ABSTRACT: The United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842, in some ways, represents the beginning of American marine mammal biology. The expedition returned home with information on at least twelve marine mammal specimens (mostly small cetaceans or pinnipeds), seven of which were considered new species at the time. Commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, the expedition covered over 80,000 miles, surveyed new waters and lands, and brought back thousands of scientific specimens. Official publications of the expedition by Titian Peale and John Cassin cover the birds and mammals collected. The squadron’s publications, and the journals of its officers and scientists also contain a good deal of information about sightings of marine mammals. Of particular interest were whaling operations and grounds, and the expedition did much to help expand the whaling prospects of the United States around the globe, with a focus on the South Pacific islands. Though largely forgotten today, the “U. S. Ex. Ex.” played an important early role in establishing American influence in marine mammal biology and global whaling operations. [MARMAM] Two new papers on the taxonomic nomenclature
Dear MARMAM, I am pleased toannounce the publication of two new papers on the taxonomic nomenclature ofsmall cetaceans: Jefferson, T. A. 2021. Proposal to retain the scientific namesof five species of small cetaceans (Delphinapterus leucas, Tursiops truncatus,Lissodelphis borealis, Cephalorhynchus eutropia, and Inia geoffrensis) bydesignating their unused senior synonyms as nomina oblita. Aquatic Mammals 47:257-267.Abstract: The purpose of thisnote is to retain five names of small cetaceans [Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas,1776) for the beluga whale, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) for the commonbottlenose dolphin, Lissodelphis borealis (Peale, 1849) for the northern rightwhale dolphin, Cephalorhynchus eutropia (Gray, 1846) for the Chilean dolphin, and Inia geoffrensis (Blainville in Desmarest, 1817) for the Amazon Riverdolphin] that are each threatened by synonyms that antedate theircurrently-used names. In each case, theearlier name has rarely or never been used in the past 120 years, and itsresurrection, as the valid name for these species would threatenstability. Prevailing usage must bemaintained to favor stability over priority, in accordance with Article 23.9 ofthe International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. I request that in each case listed, thedesignated junior synonym be henceforth considered a nomen protectum (andthereby continue to be used as the valid name for the relevant taxon), and thateach of the indicated senior synonyms be treated as a nomen oblitum (i.e.,forgotten name). Link: https://www.aquaticmammalsjournal.org/index.php?option=com_content=featured=101 Jefferson, T. A. 2021. Nomenclature of the dolphins, porpoises, and small whales: A review and guide to the early taxonomicliterature. NOAA Professional Paper NMFS 21:107 pp.Abstract:The taxonomy of severalgenera of small cetaceans has been confused for decades or even centuries. Atleast 358 species of dolphins, porpoises, and small whales have been givennames, yet only 50 of these are currently recognized as valid species; the vastmajority of the rest are junior synonyms. Recent taxonomic revisions of somegenera have clarified things, but there are others that await taxonomicrevision, which will probably recommend generic recombinations and new orresurrected species. As new taxonomic studies are resurrecting old species andsometimes describing new ones, an understanding of the available names iscrucial to this task. This monograph comprehensively reviews all 358 valid andinvalid species of dolphins, porpoises, and small whales; documents their typespecimens; summarizes the history of each name; and assigns a status to each.In addition, appendices discuss the early taxonomic literature, historicalnotes, and museum acronyms, and provide a glossary of relevant taxonomic terms.Ultimate goals are to help identify as many of the nomina dubia as possible, and to facilitate the inclusion ofdata and material (both morphological and molecular) from relevant type specimensinto future taxonomic studies. [MARMAM] New paper on harbor seals
Dear MARMAM, My co-authors and I are pleased to announce the publication of our new paper on harbor seals in Washington State, USA: Estimating the stock size of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) in the inland waters of Washington State using line-transect methods Thomas A. Jefferson, Mari A. Smultea, Eric J. Ward, and Barry Berejikian Abstract Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) in the inland waters of Washington were reduced by predator control programs in the twentieth century, but stocks have rebounded since being protected in the 1970s. Three management stocks are recognized, but there is little information on their current abundance. We conducted 38,431 km of aerial line-transect surveys throughout the range of these stocks in 2013–2016, sighting a total of 4,678 groups of harbor seals. Line-transect analysis with Beaufort sea state as a covariate provided estimates of the number of seals in the water. We then incorporated tagging data from 15 instrumented seals to develop correction factors, both for seals missed in the water while diving, and those that were on shore. Tagging data were modeled with generalized linear mixed models to provide estimates of the proportions diving and hauled out. After applying these correction factors, we estimated that the Hood Canal stock contained 1,368 seals (CV = 16.8%), the Southern Puget Sound stock contained 1,976 seals (CV = 20.5%), and the Washington Northern Inland Waters stock contained 7,513 seals (CV = 11.5%). This study presents a non-traditional approach to estimating the size of Washington inland waters harbor seal stocks, which may also be applicable to other species for which survey and tagging data are available. The paper is open-acces and can be downloaded from this link: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0241254 Best wishes,Tom jeffersonsclym...@aol.com ___ MARMAM mailing list MARMAM@lists.uvic.ca https://lists.uvic.ca/mailman/listinfo/marmam
[MARMAM] New paper on the vaquita just published
Dear MARMAM, The vaquita, Gulf of California harbor porpoise (Phocoena sinus), is highly endangered. We present a synopsis of the situation, with a summary of earliest "scientific" discovery of the species. As an appendix, we are also fortunate to have a lovely retrospective by the great marine mammal biologist Kenneth S. Norris, of describing the species from several skulls found in the 1950's. Let us hope that vaquita may survive. Vaquita: beleaguered porpoise of the Gulf of California, México Bernd Würsig, Thomas A. Jefferson, Gregory K. Silber and Randall S. Wells The vaquita (Phocoena sinus), an endemic porpoise of the Gulf of California, México, was first described scientifically in 1958, from three skulls. It is considered a sister taxon of an ancestor of the Southern Hemisphere Burmeister’s porpoise (P. spinipinnis) and spectacled porpoise (P. dioptrica), a case of antitropical distribution and speciation. Vaquita in modern times seem to have existed largely in waters 10 to 30 m deep of the very northern Gulf of California, and may have already existed in relatively low numbers by the 1950s and 1960s. The external appearance of the vaquita was not described until the late 1970s, and not until the 1980s and 1990s did additional information about ecology and biology emerge. Those studies and more recent shipboard and aerial visual line transect surveys, as well as stationary and boat-towed acoustic arrays, mapped occurrence patterns and approximate numbers in greater detail than before. The first credible estimates of abundance appeared in the 1990s, with numbers in the mid-hundreds and declining. While several reasons for the decline were originally postulated, mortality due to entanglement in nets has been established as the only known cause of decline, especially due to bycatch in large-mesh gillnets set for the endangered croaker fish totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi). This fish is prized in China for human consumption of its swim bladder, generally ground up for purported therapeutic purposes. An extensive, lucrative fishery for totoaba, now illegal for many decades, has existed since at least the 1920s, and has recently increased. Although there have been laudable attempts to stem or halt totoaba fishing, these have largely been unsuccessful, and as of this writing the vaquita is on the brink of extinction. However, rapid concentrated action against illegal fishing with gillnets may yet save the species, and hope (with attendant action) must be kept alive. This overview is followed by an appendix of a previously unpublished popular essay by K.S. Norris describing when, where, and how he first discovered the species, and subsequent early work relative to this newly-described porpoise. [MARMAM] International Save the Vaquita Day 2020
This year, International Save the Vaquita Day will be on Saturday, 18 July, from 0900-1600 Pacific time. International Save the Vaquita Day is intended to be an annual event similar to Earth Day, but with a specific focus on raising awareness and appreciation of the world’s most endangered marine mammal, the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). Events around the globe direct the attention of people to the plight of this tiny porpoise species, and what needs to be done to save it from extinction. The main purpose is to draw attention to and appreciation of the vaquita, Mexico’s “Panda of the Sea”. In 2020, due to the unique challenges arising from the COVID-19 epidemic, the event will take place entirely online, with a day-long live stream on YouTube, Facebook and Twitch. Find out more on the official event page: https://vaquita.mx/ or go to https://vivavaquita.org/international-save-the-vaquita-day/. [MARMAM] Special screening of vaquita film and panel discussion
VIVA Vaquita would like to announce that we will be participating in a special screening of the short documentarySouls of the Vermilion Sea, followed by a panel discussion on Sunday, March 25th, from 3-5 PM PST. Co-hosted by ASU’s Center for Biodiversity Outcomes (CBO) and several local organizations, this event will be held on the campus of Arizona State University, and will be live-streamed for a global audience. We hope you might join the conversation with a distinguished panel of experts, who will discuss this compelling conservation challenge. In light of recent vaquita CPR efforts in the Gulf of California, it is a timely and important opportunity to query experts on the status of current recovery efforts. The short documentary will be available for viewing for the duration of the event at the following link, which currently directs visitors to the event announcement. On the day of the event, the link will connect to CBO’s YouTube channel, where the 30 minute documentary will be available for viewing, as well as the actual live-streamed discussion. Viewers will be able to post questions for the panel through this platform. http://links.asu.edu/VaquitaEvent ___ MARMAM mailing list MARMAM@lists.uvic.ca https://lists.uvic.ca/mailman/listinfo/marmam

[MARMAM] International Save the Vaquita Day – July 11, 2015
International Save the Vaquita Day – July11, 2015 This year,Saturday, July 11, 2015 has been designated as the Third Annual InternationalSave the Vaquita Day!! This is intendedto be an annual event similar to Earth Day, but with a specific focus onraising awareness and appreciation of the world’s most endangered marinemammal, the vaquita (Phocoena sinus). Events around the globe will direct the attention of people to the plight ofthis tiny porpoise species, and what needs to be done to save it fromextinction. There will be booths, games, music, free prizes, educationalbrochures, talks, face painting, and several life-size models of vaquitas onhand to draw attention to and appreciation of the vaquita, Mexico’s “Panda ofthe Sea”. The primarygoal is to make as many people as possible aware of the vaquita and its plight, and spur them to act. The species is nearly extinct, with only about 80individuals left, and is declining at almost 19% per year! We will have asimple message for folks about what they can do to help (either full supportfor the Mexican Government, or support for a boycott and embargo of Mexicanseafood – depending on Mexico’s actions in the next month or so). Secondary goals are to gather signatures for our petitions to the Mexicangovernment, and also to raise additional funds for future educational andresearch work on the vaquita. The event is designed to be fun, as well aseducational, and kid-friendly! Last year, there were 18 venues, in the United States, Mexico, Australia, andEurope. In 2015, we hope to have booths at all the same venues, plus manynew ones. We will also have the participation of zoos, aquaria, andmuseums (for example, Sea World, Long Beach Aquarium, San Diego Zoo, and SDNatural History Museum). We also hope to attract media attention, so thatthe vaquita is covered on national and local news, thereby greatly expandingthe number of people exposed. Please checkour website regularlyhttp://www.vivavaquita.org/international-save-the-vaquita-day.html tolearn the latest on the activities planned and venues details. We hope you will attend (or better yet, volunteer at) an event in your area. [MARMAM] Call for Marine Mammal Photos
Dear MARMAMMers, We are currently preparing a second edition of our 2008 Elsevier book- Marine Mammals of the World: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Identification. As part of the upgrade, we are soliciting new photos to improve on those of the first edition. We are mainly looking for images of rarer species (e.g., beaked whales, Baikal/Caspian seals, Ross seal, and southern fur seals), but also unusual behaviors, hybrids, anomalous color patterns, etc. If we use your photo, you will receive a 30% discount on the book; if we use a large number of your photos, you will receive a free copy of the e-book. Please send pinniped photos to Marc Webber marcweb...@sbcglobal.net and all other marine mammal photos to Robert Pitman robert.pit...@noaa.gov. Please send medium size JPGs and we will request full-res versions later if we need them. We thank you in advance for your contributions! Best wishes, Thomas A.Jefferson Marc A. Webber Robert L.
