[XFree86] XFree86 4.3 question

2008-01-08 Thread Willi Lohmann
Would anyone know if XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL had problems with
XFillRectangle and newly drawn bitmaps in RHEL 3?

I have an application that draws rectangles into bitmaps (depth 1
pixmaps). These bitmaps are set as the stipple bitmap within
corresponding full color GCs for a full color pixmap. The intent is to
use XFillRectangle to stamp each bitmap into the pixmap with the display
being the rectangle.

This works fine in RHEL 4 with xorg-X11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.36 and not so fine
with RHEL 3 with XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL. On RHEL 3, only some of the
bitmaps appear in the final display. I figure the bitmaps are good,
because I substitute XCopyPlane for XFillRectangle and the missing
bitmaps will appear. I'd use XCopyPlane but it is way to slow for the
amount of drawing I'm doing (literally billions of rectangles).

Since it works in the one case, I'm hoping I'm just missing something
simple like an initialization. But if there's a bug in release, I'll
have to look at other options.

(Also, are there any good resources on X programming other than the
O'Reilly books?)

Thanks,
Willi

More than likely, the version of XFree86 that came with Redhat 7.1
does not support your video card (your card probably came out after
that version of XFree86). Download the latest Fedora Core
(fedora.redhat.com) release and try again.

Send the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file to the xfree86@xfree86.org

sort of thing without more system information. Usually all the
information needed to diagnose the problem is in that log file.

Actually that makes plenty of sense, but that doesn't help. I checked
all the files in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ and everything as well as in
the fonts directory therein are owned by root and have 755 as the
privileges. I also looked at the /sw/lib/X11 directory (including the
nested fonts directory) and found the same thing. So unless there is
somewhere else I should look, that doesn't appear to be the problem.

I am surprised that yours was the only response. I really wish I could
get this working. I'm now beginning to regret breaking the older
version by trying to install the newer version.

I've searched online for hours for a solution, and tried every one I've

find the one named (I updated the locate db and still couldn't find
it). I read about various font and font directory commands with no
luck. When I look in the mentioned directory
(/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/) I see it empty except for fonts.dir
and fonts.scale both of which only have one character, a 0 (that's
a zero). I tried replacing the zero with null but that didn't help. I
looked at the other fonts.dir files for ideas, but they list fonts and
I have no fonts in the CID directory.

I looked for a FAQ, but the few I found didn't provide any useful

I am very confused and hope someone can get me back on track with a few
kind suggestions.

No Screen Found. I tried XF86Setup, but when I got the menu up, the video
was shaking vertically, and I could not read it. I tried the xfconfig
program, but was not sure of the hardware. The main reason I'm interested in
this program is because a need a good video card driver to use with Mplayer.

I recently bought a used laptop. I installed OpenBSD 3.4 and XFree86 (all

have to type to start the video driver and watch my movie (I can hear the
sound on the video when I play it, just can't see the video)?

1) Sorry for replying on list, I thought some of this may be of use to
others.

2) I doubt I can specifically help you, but I thought I'd try to point
you to some resources (and make a request).

Resources:

I started some WikiLearn pages to record my own and other's

Subject: question regarding supported graphic drivers for linux rh9

Hi, I don't know if you can help me, but I was reffered here. The
ATI website doesn't offer any drivers for the radeon 7200. I am
having problem with this card since it does not seem to be
supported by linux redhat 9.

Radeon 7000/VE, 7200, 7500, 8500, 9000, 9100, 9500, 9700 are all
supported in Red Hat Linux 9, including the Pro variants of the
latter chips. The Radeon 7200 has been supported in Red Hat
Linux since Red Hat Linux 7.0 several years ago.

All of the above cards are supported with dualhead if the model
is a dualhead model. All of the above cards are also supported
with 3D except for the 9500 and 9700.

I'm not sure where you've got your information that the Radeon
7200 is not supported by Red Hat Linux 9, as it's been supported
out of the box in every OS release including version 9 for about
3.5 years. This card is the original Radeon card, and was
previously known under different marketing names when it was
originally released Radeon 32SDR/DDR and Radeon 64SDR/DDR.
Another variant of this card is the Radeon LE, which is also
supported, and will be detected as a Radeon 7200 also, as it has
the same PCI device ID.

I have read that you have to download a newer version of the x
server...

You heard very wrong.

I was wondering if you could give me any information on how to
fix my problem...any links or websites would be more than
welcome. thank you

We have no idea what your problem is. All you've stated, is that
Radeon 7200 is not supported by Red Hat Linux 9, and that is
false, as I have 2 machines running Red Hat Linux 9 beside me,
with Radeon 7200 hardware in them, working flawlessly, and using
the stock drivers that come with Red Hat Linux 9.

Supply more information and perhaps someone can help you.

Hey,
I run fluxbox and window maker, I start them by adding fluxbox/wmaker to
.xinitrc and then run startx.
Now I've started to write a small script called myX , you use it like this
myX fluxbox and it will first write fluxbox to .xinitrc and then runs
startx ..
Is there a way I can do this without my little script ? using the startx
command ?
It seems you've already done this (if I understand you correctly).
Write fluxbox to .xinitrc (after saving the original .xinitrc somewhere,
just for safety) and then run startx .

[XFree86] Installation Question

2003-08-14 Thread bclark
I am trying to install with the binaries provided by xfree86. I ran
Xinstall -check
It response was Binary distribution name is 'Linux-ix86-glibc23'
I downloaded the 12 files, then ran Xinstall.sh.

Started seeing this error:
cannot handle file 'libc.so.6' with TLS data

I am running Red Hat 9. How do I fix this so I can procede?

2003-07-31 Thread Oli Comber
By Hummingbird, you mean 'Reflections', ie an Xserver on a PC?

Its important to remember that the bit that displays everything, even though
its the remote end that you're sitting at, is the _server_. The machine
hosting the xterm/openoffice/gnome session and sending it to you is the
_client_.

You shouldn't have any/many problems with that: start your Reflections
session, telnet in, export your display (export DISPLAY=PC IP address:0) and
run the appropriate Xclient. If you're using another unix box instead of
reflections, dont forget to 'xhost + suse host' on it to allow the client to
use the display.

If you're feeling cheeky, run Xnest and start Gnome inside it, to get that
'computer in a window' feel ;)

Yes, of course you can install and run Xnest. Try 'man 1 Xnest'.
If you have vnc running on the system where our hummingbird server
is located you can also use Xvnc.

Even better, use ssh with PuTTY instead of telnet.

Also, if you use this a lot you can enable XDMCP on the unix box, at
least if you run some kind of login manager. Then you can usually just
do an XDMCP query to get a login screen remotely :-)

Methods of enabling xdmcp and doing XDMCP queries vary with different
display managers and X servers, but yours should have some documentation
on it.

[XFree86] XLib question: Using XImage

2003-06-17 Thread Tim
I'm trying to implement a image loader that uses
XImage(for the speed offered by direct access to
XImage::data). The problem is that Xlib is so poorly
documented that it's difficult to find anything beyond
the manpages(or a PDF version of them) and this
especially includes XImage. I've been searching for
days but could not find any docs that explain the
XImage::data format or offer a good example of using
XImage with loaded data(No hard coded values or
colors). While using the same DIB format in BMP files
seems the most logical to me some sources I've looked
at seem to indicate that the format is just a list of
pixel values. Does anyone have experience working with
XImage or know where to find source of a program that
loads BMPs or PCMs or TIFFs and uses XImage to display them?

(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 31.50-48.50 kHz
(II) R128(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 40.00-70.00 Hz
(II) R128(0): Clock range: 12.50 to 250.00 MHz

Your hsync range is not large and this is causing a lot of your modes to be
rejected.
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 640x480 (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 800x600 (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (hsync out of range)

If you can open this up that might allow these modes to work. There are
other modes available but many are failing with (no mode of this name) as
the explanation. Perhaps they need to be specified in your config file?
Others are failing because you don't have enough (video) memory, probably
for the color depth you specified, so it may be worth trying lower color
depths. A few fail due to vrefresh and mode clock settings.

You've got 8K of video memory.
VideoRAM: 8192 kByte (128-bit SDR SGRAM 1:1).

Looks like you're trying to do 24 bits.
(**) R128(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32

It may (or may not) be worth generating some custom modelines and trying
those. Use the gtf utility included with X if you want to try this out.

Good luck,
cyn

[XFree86] mouse question

2003-03-13 Thread Ron Andreasen
I have a mouse similar to the IntelliMouse Explorer
which has 5 button (translated to seven in xfree) and
2 scroll wheels. I see from the website that I can
have xfree86 recognize all seven buttons by putting
the following into the config file:

Section InputDevice
Identifier IntelliMouse Explorer
Driver mouse
Option Device/dev/mouse
Option Protocol ExplorerPS/2
Option Buttons 7
Option ZAxisMapping 6 7
EndSection

My question for all of you is how do I tell xfree86 to
make the extra 2 buttons do what I want them to do?
In my case I would like these buttons to act as a page
forward and page back in applications like Mozilla and
Nautilus.

Right now by setting the mouse type as IntelliMouse
Explorer I can use these extra buttons to move things
(the same as right clicking on something and clicking
on move). That's nifty and all but not what I want
them to do. ;)

Thanks in advance for any help,

Ron

Re: [XFree86] ONE QUESTION

2003-03-01 Thread Alan Coopersmith
Almost all Unix systems include a version of the X Window System - generally
based off the original MIT/X Consortium/X.org sources. XFree86 is a branch
off those sources which is used by most open source releases. You can find
more information at http://www.x.org/
(Technically, in order to claim to be a Unix Workstation (tm), a system must
 include the X Window System - see http://www.opengroup.org/regproducts/xwm0.htm )
Long long ago, in the late 80's, this was not always true and there were other
graphics systems on Unix, such as Sun NeWS and Apollo DM, but they have all long
since died out. There have also been attempts to develop new ones, such as
Berlin, but they have not been able to gain much hold against X. The only major
Unix-like system that comes with anything other than X today is MacOS X, for
which X is now available, but the native graphics system is Apple's Quartz.

Subject: Re: [XFree86] ONE QUESTION

Almost all Unix systems include a version of the X Window System -
generally
based off the original MIT/X Consortium/X.org sources. XFree86 is a
branch
off those sources which is used by most open source releases. You can
find
more information at http://www.x.org/

(Technically, in order to claim to be a Unix Workstation (tm), a
system must
include the X Window System - see
http://www.opengroup.org/regproducts/xwm0.htm )

Long long ago, in the late 80's, this was not always true and there were
other
graphics systems on Unix, such as Sun NeWS and Apollo DM, but they have
all long
since died out. There have also been attempts to develop new ones, such
as
Berlin, but they have not been able to gain much hold against X. The
only major
Unix-like system that comes with anything other than X today is MacOS X,
for
which X is now available, but the native graphics system is Apple's
Quartz.

Every Linux distribution that I know of uses XFree86 for its
implementation of the X Window System. You can also buy commercial
versions of the X Window System, but they tend to be pricey, and
what's
the point, anyway, when XFree86 works just fine?

Other UNIX-like operating systems that use XFree86 are FreeBSD,
NetBSD,
and OpenBSD. There are also special versions of XFree86 that can run
atop of the Mac OS X GUI or the Windows operating system to allow some
 applications to be run there.

[XFree86] Newbie Question - V41 error when using start x

2003-02-24 Thread Matt McAnelly
Hello all. I am sure this question is asked all the time but I am just getting started and this is not addressed in the two books I have. I have installed Red Hat 7 twice now trying to fix this problem to no avail. The install process goes without a snag. I just cannot get X to work. I have tried Xconfigurator as well as manually editing the Xfree86 file and I get the same error. I have a Pentium 75 or 166 (tried both processors), 32 megs SDRAM, a tseng labs 4000 W32p (a supported card), and 4 gig hd. I am trying to use the version of Xfree86 that came with RedHat 7.0 disk. When I type "startx" the screen goes black for about 3-5 seconds and then an error message comes up. There is a server 11 error as well as a message similar to this: II) LoadModule: "v41" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module v41 (II) UnloadModule: "v41" (EE) Failed to load module "v41" When I use vi on the log file the only problem I see is this V41 not loading message above. I read somewhere on a google search that you may be able to disable v41 but I could not find the file where it is located. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks. [XFree86] xdm question

2003-02-06 Thread Pacho Baratta

i'm building a
customized kiosk for a project and i must solve a problem.i have 600 pc with
64 Mb ram, so i'm implementing very basilar desktop withfluxbox, and i need
xdm at start to give the chance to choose the user in avery simple way. it
works fine, but something i still need to fix.when i launch xdm, and then
mozilla, i noticed very bad performance. thepoint is that when i do "ps -e"
i see this
output:."xdm""xdm""xdm""xdm""xdm""mozilla-bin""mozilla-bin""mozilla-bin""mozilla-bin""mozilla-bin"..five
instances of mozilla running means wasting about 50 Mb of ram, too muchfor
my machines...so the question is: what should i change to stop all these
instances ofxdm/mozilla.i tought it's cause xdm and so mozilla get all 6
virtual screen so i changed/etc/inittab to stop all tty except tty1 and i
got only 1 session of xdmrunning; but still 5 sessions of
mozilla..any suggestion?regards,
pacho

First and foremost, have you considered dropping mozilla proper in favor
of one of the much smaller and lighter mozilla-cousins such as Phoenix?

As to why mozilla is launching 5 copies of itself, that doesn't make much
sense. How are you launching mozilla? Via .xsession? If so, what does this
look like? Is your window manager doing it?

[XFree86] XFree86 install question - to which glibc upgrade?

2003-01-31 Thread ccf
Hi,

sorry for maybe a trivial question - the XFree86 binary directory says
Linux-ix86-glibc22, when I run the Xinstall with a check parameter, it
says ...-glibc21. Does it mean that I should upgrade glibc before?
Probably yes I guess, but to which version? Should I upgrade strictly to
2.2.5 or can I use more recent version?

Thanks a lot,
regards,
Petr Puncochar.

[XFree86] One question about the XFree86 software.....

2003-01-27 Thread Scott D Fletcher
To whomever read this,

Hi! I have one question. Well, two questions now. 1) When will
the next version of XFree86 be released? I noticed it is already one
year and there's no newer version yet. 2) Is there any progress on the
video chipset, SIS 650 that will be included in the later release if it
won't be in the next release??

Thanks,
 Scott F.

It's the fbdev driver with hw calls removed. For multiple heads you need
to define BusID in the isa name space

 Option shm on
