I assume that you got a background in software engineering like most
people on this list do?
Just think about how you would set up a virtual reality with the purpose
of entropy reduction/spiritual growth. Growth is the result of a
positive change of your intent. You would need to provide the
individuated pieces of consciousness with a _somewhat_ consistent
virtual reality in which they can use free will and in which their
decisions will result in a feedback (bad decisions and attachment with
the physical world leads to suffering).
You would also need a smart way to render the physical reality based on
a probability distribution in order to reduce the processing time
required. You would end up with something like quantum mechanics as a
probabilistic game engine. Then you (the evolutionary process) would
probably also find out that it helps the entire thing a lot if you give
those individuals working on overcoming their egos more influence over
your virtual reality (a positive feedback loop resulting in more
positive change). Campbell writes that you would enable those people to
utilize a broader spectrum of the probability distribution. There are
many books on enlightened people (yes ... also by white people with a
scientific background) who do all kind of paranormal stuff. Of course
its only paranormal from a Newtonian understanding of things. Once you
are open to the possibility that this might in fact be a consciousness
development training environment then many things suddenly make perfect
sense.
The "goal" of evolution is more complexity and less entropy. If
consciousness is the most fundamental substrate of which everything is
made of then our purpose would be to become aware of this aspect and to
act in alignment of the bigger evolutionary process: To become love, to
overcome our egos, to become aware/conscious/enlightened, to reduce
systemic entropy ... or however you want to call it.
If you like the God metaphor you can use it as well. The primordial
consciousness of which we are all just a tiny individuated parts of can
be referred to as "God". As the host of this virtual reality it would be
all knowing, all loving, all caring, etc. ...
Why is there still war and suffering if there is an all knowing, all
loving "God" hosting this virtual reality? Well because growth must come
from within. You can not induce genuine growth by forcing your children
to do X or Y. If you want your children to solve a puzzle they have to
figure it out on their own. If you solve the puzzle for them there is
little that they will learn and little growth. Empathy just has nothing
to do with solving puzzles for other beings.

for 1) what are we to give them? Give them the label of success?
for 2) is this like a bigger social network? more followers; more
friends?
for 3) encourage others to contribute in a positive way toward common
good
seems as if the "ultimate good" is being defined as
building or creating a beneficial environment for consciousness
evolution.
Seems like a tall order for an AGI. And somewhat hard to specify
what constitutes "consciousness evolution progress."
I'll think about this a bit more, but coming from my Christian beliefs
I find the God explanation to be simpler. And, the ultimate goal
simple - to marvel at God.
