Hi Scott,

You've got it right.

If you have a draw, the board in the antenna is bad. It's not available
separately.

The capacitors in the control unit (that senses the changing state of
the white lead), short over time and heat, both of which your car has
seen plenty.

When they short, the antenna draws power. They can be replaced.

Hi Ed, that is the same thing you described for the antenna that I threw
away when I bought this replacement antenna used. It was described as
"works perfectly", and included a new mast. I just wanted to be sure I
understood how the thing is supposed to work before I take it back and say
"no it doesn't". So what are the chances that I've now had two antennas
with the same or similar problem?

Short of physical damage, this is the only way I have ever seen these
antennae fail. The caps were all cheap (Hirschmann, a cheap subsidiary
of Bosch). Certainly two could fail in a similar manner.

It's garage cleanout time:

1) 7 unused M6X35 studs, BMW p/n 07 12 9 908 103. These are used on valve
covers on many models (including an '87 325 2.7L ETA). If you're not sure
if they'll fit your application, I can look it up on the ETK.

2) VDO MPG gauge with attached circuit board. I was told it was from an
'88 325i, but I don't know that for sure. Markings on the gauge face are:
"88 233 009/0011 1043/114 02 USA". Markings on the side are: "VDO
Made in Germany 462.202/1/8 1.374 905.9". Looks to be in good condition,
but I have no way of testing it.

Postage on studs are on me; recipient pays postage/shipping for MPG gauge.

Evan

PS Anyone know of a place in the south SF Bay Area that sells Redline
products? TIA.

Build date 12-82, 533i, 242200 miles. It's drinking age! I was bitching
about spending $74 on a thermostat and various temp senders and replacement
bolts for the thermostat housing but you know - my mileage seems to have
come back up to the 22mpg range vs. around 17mpg. (It was really fun dealing
with three broken t-stat housing bolts - gotta get a torch - MAP gas doesn't
get enough heat on the frozen bolts to free them up.)

I compare the modest cost of repairs to the cost of monthly payments and I
think my old car is not so bad. A week of driving a toyota has made me
appreciate the 533 all over again. So a toast to the old girl!

OMG! Mine is a 1984 533i, build date 9/83, 140,000, and I adore her. I
am now at the point of deciding whether to spend many $$$ on some fairly
major oil leaks, or buying another 84, 85, 86 E28. I am waiting for the
clutch or transmission to go in order to justify the costs of the seal
replacement, but I don't think I will reach that point soon. Meanwhile,
oil just pours out of somewhere, especially if I drive under heavy
load (mountain driving, especially).

But your basic point about repair costs are spot-on. Unfortunately,
I twisted one of the water pump housing bolts off, but have survived
18 months on a liberal slathering of RTV to prevent leaks. Amazing.
ANY money I spend on this car is free in the sense that it comes
out of the fantastic sums I would have to spend on payments and
insurance on a new car.

Let's hoist a few to the beautiful E28s of the world, especially the
Alpine Whites!

Okay, it's 1am, and I finally finished installing the new hoses, Al thermostat
housing, new thermostat, and new heater valve. Then, looking at the Bently,
their picture of the coolant bleed screw (from a 535), looks like nothing what I
have on my 540i.

My expansion tank is on the firewall, so it's not up there, nor on the radiator.
There is one bolt that could do it, but it has a mount attached to it that is
holding a vacuum line or something.

Directions I've seen for bleeding have you unscrewing this thing, while the
engine is running, which based on what I am seeing would scare the crap out of
me (image of my hand being taken off by the fan).

I really would love to drive the car in the morning, so any quick help would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Subject: e34 525iA central locking question
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I would like to fix the central locking on the 5er. The first problem is that the
front passenger lock does not engage the "lock" position unless the button is manually
depressed. However, it will unlock from either the trunk or driver's side.

The second problem is the trunk and gas cap. The gas cap never locks. The trunk does
not lock when using the driver's or passenger doors.

The third problem is the rear driver's side door lock cycles when using either front
doors to lock the car. This does not happen when locking from the trunk.

My suspicion is the PO hacked the wiring to install a security system. I've found
several, shall we say, "spare" wires in the midst of my stereo install. Any clues as
to how to determine what if any connections are missing?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Roland

I have a set of Michelin Pilot Alpins for sale. I picked them up from a
fellow lister that was cleaning out his garage. They are 205 75R 14 Alpin
snow tires in great condition and are currently mounted on BMW steel rims
for older 7 and 5 series cars. All 4 tires have over 10/32 tread and look
like new, whereas the wheels are straight and undamaged but are NOT very
attractive. $175/set of 4 (with or without the wheels), plus shipping or
pick up in the Washington, DC area. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi

I am getting the Odessey PC 680MJT for my race car because it weighs 15 lbs.
For a street car I would use the Interstate vented battery. This one fits
fine and lasts a long time. The Odessey will take a little fabricating to
fit properly.

appreciate all the responses. Let me just say that there are a lot of

15 responses, and I only purchased 1. If anyone is interested I would be
happy to forward your request onto the people who have them available.

However, I feel that there must not be a lot of exhaust swapping in the

I'd think that E34t pilots will run their exhaust til it rots. Maybe try zionsville
or bimmerworld.
Beyond that, You might be able to get a muffler from Olympic with a decent discoutn I
think the
Non-m exhausts are only a couple hundred bucks new at the dealer, and they last
forever (10
yrs...close enough).

Hope you're getting some time to hang with your brother. Cat fight with Turner til
Christmas, then
we fly to Canada til New Years day.

Hmmm,

Major oil leaks. In my case a leak that gets onto the exhaust coming from
the right side rear head gasket (only visible from beneath the car w/ a
flashlight). And most recently the oil pressure sender - very easy fix and
really common - look for a clean oil washed stripe with a dirty oily residue
on either side coming straight down from the sender on the left side of the
engine. Also manages to get on the exhaust for those groovy Kendahl burning
oil scents in the morning. (Gahd, I love the smell of Kendahl in the
morning!). Oil is cheap - I figure as long as my use stays above 600m/quart
why fix it - arguably all I should have to do is change the filter as I'm
doing the oil changes incrementally. And I'm freshening the asphalt!

The rear oil leak is the one bedeviling me. I thought it was the
rear main seal, not the head per se, but they might be the same thing.

The pressure sender has been replaced several times in the hope
that it suddenly caused the leak. Hope continues to triumph over
experience, but I really, really want the sender to be the problem.
Unfortunately, no matter how many times i change it, the leak
continues.

You forgot the price of garage floor cardboard, and the loss of face
after your folks tell you to park in the street when visiting in your
calculations.

The disjunction between my relatively clean emissions and the smoker
looks of the car is jarring. Fortunately, mountain driving is the
the only type of driving that really pours the oil onto the exhaust.
Daily driving leaks are much less severe.
