- There's a little bit of shopping in Tyson's Corner which is about 10 mins away.
- There's also a premium outlet mall in Leesburg about 20 mins west.
- There are one or two museums to visit in the DC area and a few decent restaurants.
- There are a few vineyards out in the Middleburg area (Horse country 40 mins west),
though VA wine
isn't quite at the top of the world's list of favorite wines.
- Summit Point is about an hour west, and they're finishing a third track and second
skidpad this
winter.
If you're willing to split the difference and bond with her around town for part of
the time, you
could make a decent long weekend of it. I hope you're not planning on just cutting
her loose for
the entire time.

About 20 miles away in Washington, DC, there are a number of museums and
monuments that could definitely fill a couple of afternoons. And what could
be more romantic than a nice dinner in our nation's capitol?

Reston also has a very nice and upscale shopping center. Think Rockefeller

Doug,
With the age and mileage of your car I'd say there's about a 99% chance that the
radiator neck is cracked. The harder you crank down on the hose clamp, the better the
chance you'll snap it off completely. If it's cracked the only cure is a new
radiator. You'll probably also want to replace the plastic thermostat housing with an
aluminum one (if they're available for the 540) or a new plastic one as they're the
same material and prone to the same type of failure at this age and mileage.

Well, my slow coolant leak finally turned into a much
bigger one. The good news is that now it is easy to spot.
It seems to be leaking out of the hose that goes from the
water pump (I think?) to the right (passenger) side of the
radiator. I say "it seems", because the coolant was
hitting the fan, and got sprayed all over, so I am
guessing.
I tightened up the clamps, and managed to snap one
completely off. Had to walk up to the local NAPA and get
a replacement, but that one is pretty junky, and can't
seem to get too tight without stripping. So, after a
quick test-drive, I still seem to be getting some fluid
leaking.
Is there a chance that it is the hose? Should I be
looking to replace the hose as well? Could it be the
plastic thing coming out of the water pump? With the
clamp tightened down, it still is leaking, but it seems to
be dripping from the bottom, which I can't see very well,
could the plastic thing be cracked/loose/have a bad
gasket?
Until I get this fixed, I'm going to be going through
about $15 - $30 worth of nice expensive coolant each week,
so any guidence is appreciated.
Oh, and where can I find a good quality hose clamp?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but it occurs to me that a few of you
probably know the answer to this question. A co-worker is re-building his
engine and is having trouble finding pistons. The car is a 1986 Mercedes
with a 5 cylinder diesel, probably about 2.5 liters displacement. Please
let me know if you can suggest a vendor for these.
Thanks,

The dealership was what I expected, having worked
with wholesalers in
the car business for over 25 years, and it
reinforced the stereotype
of the third and fourth level wholesale
operations. Plenty of
mega-dealers in the area and this place deals in
their rejects. I
suppose in the book I'll still refer to them as
Russian Mafia and
develop the characterization starting with their
stealing and
shipping cars to Russia, then leading into
starting a "legit"
operation to launder the money back into the U.S.
<SNIP>
Thanks again. I'll chalk this one up to the
Life's Experience file
and rationalize it as a chance to further bond
with my wife's
dad---even after 22 years of marriage to his
daughter.

BWAAHAHAHAHAH!
This is great! Best post of the year candidate! Phil,
you should write the book, no, really. You and your
father in law, with his Pentagon experience and
Russian, and your Bimwad creds, as the "heroes" of the
spy novel. If you don't do it I'm putting together the
screenplay and shopping it.
Jon<-----planning retirement as we speak
PS: I saw an M5 on Ebay last year, looked pretty good
in the photos (famous last words). Advertised as in
good condtion. I found the dealer in Brockton (for
those who don't know not a great metropolis S of
Boston) and took a drive to see it. What a POS.
F***ker wouldn't even start. I remember that every
time I see a deal that's too good to be true.

She's not interested in any museum! Don't worry, Doug. The Reston Town
Center is close by, and you will let her spend lots of money there ;)
There's a bunch of nice places to eat, too. Also, its a pretty short drive
to Tyson's Corner (just a few miles down route 7), which is an even bigger
place for her to spend your money. AND THEN she can drive into DC, and
REALLY spend your money in georgetown! Hope it helps.

I got my replacement pump this afternoon and I swapped out the transfer pump
this evening.
My old pump was most certainly dead.
The old pump measured about 50 ohms resistance, while a new pump reads about
5 ohms.
The old pump (when it ran) went Schlop, toc, toc, toc and was only audible when
powered independently from a battery.
The new pump goes whirrrrrr and is audible even with the engine running.
The main pump seems a little quieter, but it never buzzed, except when I was
running the pumps after the repair to repressurize the system.
The idle seems a bit more steady and the car seems a little more responsive
(then again, a good car wash can cause similar symptoms :) )
A limited post mortem on the old pump shows that the pick up screen was
mostly clean, except for the sticky varnish buildup on it. As fine as it is,
that may have been the problem I was having with stalling.
The ground for the pump motor is through the pump plumbing and is provided
by a single screw. This was still tight and clean. The bit of rubber hose
that connects the pump motor to its plumbing was still in good shape.
For a pump that is 16 years old and has probably transfered almost a
quarter million gallons of gas, that isn't too bad.
Thanks to everyone who helped out with suggestions and the diagnosis.
