I would suggest NOT installing them in your car. Not sure what car you
have, but I have tried them in a couple of vehicles and they instantly
resulted in a poor running car. They absolutely don't work in a
turbocharged car, nor my M3 or 535i.

YMMV

While in there you may want to replace the nylon sliders.
They seem to be a common problem.

Also check the rubber channel at the rear of the window.
Mine came loose and I had to glue it back into place.
My window rattled and I found the rubber channel at the bottom of my door.

Has anyone done this?

On my 325iX I have a hitch-mount rack that I used to haul two bikes from
Missouri to South Carolina, down to north Florida and back -- worked great,
but dropped about 2mpg off my average mileage.

Since the receiver-based hitch you have should offer even more support than
my drawbar style hitch I can't imagine any trouble hauling 4 bikes.

I did have to plan how I packed the truck as the rack negated the
possibility of unloading from behind the car, having to reach in from one
side or the other.

I also have a Thule roof rack for this car and while I have never hauled
bicycles up there, I did haul a camper shell home from Chicago with no
drama. Loading is a pain at that altitude though, as you surmise.

Evan,

My independent BMW mechanic read out the code for me, free, albeit at a BMW
CCA tech day. Can't hurt to ask.

My airbag light was on because of an problem in the driver's seat belt
system; replacing the receptacle fixed it and I did that myself. The
receptacle has a system that takes out the slack in the seatbelts if an
accident is happening. My tech says it is a common problem.

It's a common misconception that platinum plugs are performance plugs. They're not,
they're a long-life plug. Copper has about 6 times the electrical conductivity of
platinum so you get a stronger spark but copper plugs will erode much faster so they
require more frequent replacement. The Bosch +4's have 4 ground electrodes (thus the
+4 designation). Incidentally, the stock plugs on my 325ic have 2 ground electrodes.
The spark only fires to one ground electrode each time the plug is fired. As each
electrode wears the spark will jump to whichever one is closest (path of least
resistance). Since there are 4 ground electrodes the +4 plug will last 4 times as
long as a conventional plug with a single ground electrode. 4 ground straps
surrounding the spark also provide 4 times as much shrouding of the flame kernel
making it harder for the flame front to spread through the combustion chamber.
Definitely not good for performance. Depending on variables like combustion cha!
mber design and plug placement some engines are more sensitive to this than others.
Unless the plugs are very difficult to access I wouldn't waste the extra money on
platinum plugs, and I wouldn't put +4's on any engine that I cared about performance
(in other words, any vehicle I own).

Christian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes about Phil's mate's 330Ci:

"In the US, model years traditionally roll over in the Aug-Sep range of the
previous calendar year while in RotW new model years tend to coincide with
calendar years.

Your friend's 9/02 production car is a MY03, and I would speculate that BMW
didn't actually effect the changes you mention until 01/03 production to
coincide with their model year change."

The coupe/convertible is an odd one, as BMW made a substantial update
half-way through the usual production cycle (for cars built Mar 2003
onwards). In the US and Canada this mid-life coupe/convertible update is
often referred to as a 2004 model (which is a bit confusing as they ended up
on the lot next to brand-new sedans and Tourings which were 2003 models).

Your friend's car is doubtless a 2003 model, although BMW made few
production changes between the end of 2002 production and the beginning of
2003 production. In fact, meaningful changes to 2003 sedan/Touring/compact
(new colours, six-speed boxes, new wheels) were also held over until the Mar
2003 introduction of the facelifted coupes and convertibles.

OT: yonks ago Audi updated its A4 half-way through 1999, and that was known
by stateside Audi cognoscenti as the "1999.5" - quite convenient.

Long answer to a short question, I know :)

Hi Andy,

Just an FYI, but it was actually midway throught the 1998 model year
that they changed A4's(http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc1.shtml). I
had a 1998.5 A4 1.8tq which was actually one of the most unreliable cars
that I have ever owned.

Gang. I have a 2000 328i, 5sp, sport pkg. I currently have 85K trouble free miles.
I am looking at a major service at 100k, since I intend to keep this car a lot longer.

BMW claims that the manual transmission and rear differential fluid are "permanent"
fills and therefore, do not list quantities in the owners / service manual.

Since I intend to potentially put a lot more miles on this car, I don't want to trust
the "permanent" fill. I want to use Redline MTL and Redline rear diff fluid to
replace the BMW fluids.

Does anyone know what are the service quantities for the manual transmission and rear
differential fluids?

TIA

Cliff James

This was posted last week by someone else, you type in the last 7 digits
of your VIN and lots of neat info is revealed:

http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

BTW, conventional wisdom is that 85K miles is too long to wait for a
tranny/diff fluid change. I do mine every 30-35K miles.

My '88 e28 has been shifting very stiffly these last few weeks in Georgia,
now that our temps have dropped.

What do y'all recommend for my '88 5spd w/ 194k miles? I know it had a new
tranny put in, sometime before the PO got it - when it had 160k miles on it,
so the seals on it are fairly new.

Synthetic? ATF? What goes in this puppy? What will make it shift easier
on cold mornings, but won't leak through the seals, etc.?

Thanks
