I've done that. I don't care about the 'unsightly gap.' I was more
interested in performance gains.

>Now for the question. Anyone out there installed the UUC exhaust system on
>this vehicle?

Also have it and like it. Although it may be a matter of taste. The System U
is louder than stock and even louder than the orginal UUC exhaust. It has a
real nice sound that is lacking from the OE exhaust. As far as lighter? It
seemed the same as the UUC exhaust it replaced. However the original UUC
muffler was significantly lighter than the OE muffler. Also not sure of
performance gains as I went from an original UUC muffler to a twin pipe
System U setup. I like the sound. My girlfriend cannot understand why I
wanted to make a quiet car louder.

Any specific questions let me know.

That's kinda what I meant. By shock absorbtion, I meant that the line would
fatigue less over the life of the line which is attached to two different
things that aren't attached to each other.......

The bending into shape I guess is also a consideration. One is able to bend
BMW lines by hand.

So what? I'm sharing with you what happened to me. You want me to file
a claim? Next time I will, only there will not be a next time ;-)

The reason I didn't file a claim was I caught the problem, both times.
Once a few miles up the road. The second time I checked them before I
left the parking lot. So there was no damage. Had a wheel come off I
would contacted a lawyer.

Basically from that experience I learned to always check the work any
mechanic does before I leave their lot.

Cheers

My 540i has been using coolant somehow, but it's not leaking
anywhere. Nothing on garage floor, no dried crusty blue anywhere.
Water pump has been replaced, radiator has been replaced, aux. pump
for heater isn't leaking. Doesn't lose a lot -- filled it up in
November, and now it's down a fat inch. Oil seems normal. Any
thoughts? Thanks.

Does any one know if a 93 318 E36 coupe fender will fit a 95 M3? I don't
car about the side marker cut out since it's for a race car. Reason I ask
is the price difference is $40 at a local "junk yard". I would think it
fits but was wondering if anyone knew for sure.

I didn't say "in". Any how there are no seats in the racecar.

Oh, and the answer to your question is yes. All US cars used the same
fenders, pre and post side light. i.e., all without used same. All with
used same. They are interchangeable other than the light cutout as far as I
can tell.

However, the coupe/convertible is different from the sedan, so don't cross
them that way.

This is almost an OT whine (sorry!), but a friend with a Subaru WRX is
getting a Cobb Tuning AccessPort, a handy little computer for remapping
and reconfiguring the WRX's ECU. The flexibility and speed of this thing
compared to the best stuff we have in the BMW world (Conforti's Shark) is
rather dramatic. Here's some info on it:

http://cobbtuning.com/wrx/accessport.html

Various mappings available are:

http://www.cobbtuning.com/wrx/accessport/

And to rub salt in the wound, it can even be moved from car to car.

Anyway, living in California, I have no intention of ever using any of
these devices, but it still impresses me that their tuning is so far ahead
of ours, and I'm wondering why that is. I wonder if it's reflective of
the markets of each marque.

Don't forget about MoTec for BMW. It is extremely expensive, but work even
better than the ricer versions.

Motec is top of the line. No doubt, but pricey.

a step between is the low end and the Motec is a Tec-3.

Here's a link for a shop that has a good reputation in the SF Bay Area for
installing and tuning using a Tec-3.

You think that's slick? Check out the TwEECer for Ford ECUs. http://www.tweecer.com/
You can change just about any parameter you can think of, not just replace the stock
calibration with a prefabricated one. The RT model also provides real-time
datalogging.

>Anyway, living in California, I have no intention of ever using any of
>these devices,

You shouldn't let that deter you. With proper electronic tuning a modified vehicle
can be made to run cleaner and with better driveability than stock.

>but it still impresses me that their tuning is so far ahead

You hit the nail on the head. A huge percentage of people who buy a WRX do so with
the intention of modifying it, even more so for Mustangs. The aftermarket for these
vehicles is correspondingly robust. The BMW market is relatively quite small overall,
and only a tiny percentage of those modify their cars. BMW owners who have a DIY
mindset (such as the members of the UUC digest) represent a really tiny minority of
BMW owners. Tuning options are limited because demand for them is limited.

Subject: Tires That Don't Wander?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Group, a friend (who owns a non-running BMW) has Goodyear Eagle
something-or-other tires (255/45-17) on his non-BMW luxury Euro sedan.
(Can you say Jag-you-arr XJ-R? I knew you could.) He complains that they
tend to follow grooves and ruts in the road. I explained possible
alignment issues (could probably benefit from a little more toe in if he's
not already at the max toe-in allowed by spec). I also explained that low
profile tires tend to do that (some more than others), and that maybe he
just needs different tires. Since some BMWs have been known to run this
size (or similar), I figured that someone here might be able to recommend a
good tire that is less prone to directional problems in grooves and ruts.

Here in the Bay Area, we get some rain, no snow, but mostly we have dry
roads. This guy does tend to corner somewhat aggressively, although he
admits that he's not as aggressive as when he drove his BMW. Checking the
Tire Rack's site, I see that there are 23 different tires in this size in
the max performance, ultra-high performance, grand touring, and ultra high
performance all season categories.

Besides the wandering on ruts and grooves, he is also experiencing
accelerated wear on the outsides of the front tires. I suggested he should
visit an alignment shop where they know what they're doing (most don't).
It could just be a camber problem. But this could complicate the
camber-toe relationship, no?

Thanks for any advice,

Scott Miller
