Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Saturday night/Sunday morning I described a problem with my 95 M3. The full text is
below. Also, note that when I disconnected the battery during tests, I was
disconnecting the negative cable, not the positive.

The problem wound up being that the previous owner had modified the POSITIVE battery
cable (remember, I removed the negative from the battery during testing) to have a
different clamp for the battery post. The modification was done to have a connection
point for an amplifier in the trunk. There is the large power cable for the starter,
and a smaller wire that is also connected to the positive clamp. The smaller wire was
the culprit. It had gotten bounced loose/making poor contact due to the railroad
tracks being rough. I reconnected the wire, magic, the check engine light is
functional again. The engine cranked and ran! I walked to the trunk area, and
disconnected the little wire, and, of course, the engine died. So that truly was the
issue. Nice easy fix.

Tuck the information away, in case you ever need it. My thanks go out to all that had
suggestions, even though none were the culprit. The ultimate thanks/credit goes out
to Bobby Thrash of Strictly German Motorsports near Road Atlanta. I called him,
discussed the problem with him, and that was his number one item to check. I hate
being in-debted, but I owe Bobby big time.

I had a problem last night that continues on into today. I was driving my 95 M3,
build 7/95, and after crossing some railroad tracks that cross the road, the engine
stumbled once. Went about another 0.1 mile and it stumbles again. That makes me
start to worry.

About a mile later, approaching a stoplight, it dies. The engine will turn over, it
just will not fire off. I push the car (when traffic clears) to the gas station
nearby, pull out a Peake reader, and read the codes. The reader displays a x'1A'
(decimal 26). The table with the reader says that is a Control Unit Supply code, and
later when I check the Bentley manual, it is not listed. Actually only 4 digit codes
are listed. Ugh. I had the car towed home (it was 11:30pm).

Now it appears to be worse. The Peake reader will power up when connected to the test
port, but if I try to read the failure codes, it just flashes 'E'. Also, I am now not
getting the 'check engine' light during key on bulb test.

Next I disconnected the battery for a minute and then re-connected. Cool, have check
engine light during bulb test. Try to start the engine, and it fires to life for
about 30 seconds, then dies again. Once more, check engine light is non-functional.

Disconnect the battery again, wait, reconnect...no check engine light.

Ok, so where do I start? Find someone with a similar build date M3 and start swapping
parts? DME failure? Any clues?

Thanks in advance..

-Tom

M44 motors, from at least 96 up do not have mechanical fans, only electric.

My '98 318ti doesn't have a mechanical fan and lord knows it could
use all the horsepower it can muster! It's threaded for a clutch/fan
but there isn't one there. Maybe the previous owner took it off?!
Works fine though. I don't think any M42/44 E36 sedan-coupes have
them either but I can't say about the Z-series 4-cylinders. I know
the E30 318is had one.

None on my Chrysler van which became obvious on our trip to the beach
a couple of weeks ago when the electric fan motor gave it up. No
problem pulling 85mph on the highway and even stop-and-go in city
traffic to some extent, but you didn't want to leave it idling with
the a/c on while the ladies went into the beachwear emporium! First
trip was off-beach to Autozone for a jumper wire to test the fan
motor. I'd only brought along one and bridged the relay with that to
no avial. Chrysler sells the fan as a unit including blade and shroud
for $260 but no one had one in stock. Autozone and Advance Auto sold
motors-only that their computer said fit. Heavy Duty and normal both
for about $40. Trouble was the fan had stuck to the motor shaft like
someone had smacked it with a hammer upon assembly for good measure
in case the clip came apart. That meant purchasing a flat file and
spending some vacation time dressing the shaft until the fan blade
slid off. Then I found the motor was riveted to the frame, so I had
to drop it off at a local beach-side repair shop for a couple of
hours for them to have a "technician" grind off the rivets ($12).
Back to pick up the heavy duty motor (1" longer, no problem. Do I
know a deal when I see one?), of course the supplied bolts were too
short and Autozone didn't have any longer ones. Back to the beach
hardware store and then search for heavy-gauge wire Scotch-locks
since the "universal" motor had no built-in plug. That took visits to
three other mercantile establishments. Everything humming along just
fine, then some body surfing with the kids took all that accumulated
grime I picked up from woking on a 188,000-mile family-truckster off
my hands and arms, pronto. Saltwater, waves, and sand are recommended
after any car repair project.

Marty,

I'm in for the low beam upgrade for my wife's E34 with ellipsoids.
Are you going to organize the group buy, or do we need to contact Daniel
Stern directly?

After Marty's post, I too contacted Candlepower, Inc. Canada and inquired about the
bulbs. Turns
out, I received a response from Daniel Stern at Candlepower, Inc. who I have dealt
with a number
of times before as I have the Cibie CSRs in my E30.

Long and short of it, he is willing to assist with a group buy. I couldn't tell if
Marty or
someone from the Welty list was already coordinating one or not but it didn't appear
to me that
there was one necessarily started yet. Anyway, Daniel will offer a nice discount on
bulbs (about
26% over the normal price) if we put together a group buy.

I would like to see some confirmation from someone or Marty specifically if a group
buy was
already started or not. If not, I will coordinate one with Daniel Stern and
Candlepower, Inc. if
there is enough interest and we can get one started.

Regards,

Rich Dorffer

Because consumers want MORE FEATURES! Same reason our cars have
automatic anti-skid THIS and satellite THAT and electronic multi-way
OTHER! We consumers demand it! We must have it! And we will always
buy the unit that is SHINIER, that has more CHROME, and FLASHES
BRIGHTER, with more COLOR! The marketers TOLD us so!

I think it's pretty funny (or sad) but so far I've had 2 different
experiences where the wonderful new BMW DSC on my e46 330i sedan not
only showed its limits, but reduced forward motion compared to a basic
limited slip diff on my older e36 M3 (without traction control). Latest
experience was trying to make it up a driveway (in the dry) to a house
in the mountains. There was some dirt on the left side & it was very
steep, so that made the LR wheel spin easily and freaked out the
traction control so badly it activated the error light (spinning car &
ABS indicators in the dash) and shut down! I had to carefully back the
car out of the driveway, shut off the engine, wait & then drive it
around the block before it returned to normal & shut off the lights.
Technology...

My rental Malibu (hey, it's better than the Alero!) in Hawaii was
similarly confused when I had to cross a sandy area in the "road" at a
beach. Just as I gave it some gas to keep forward momentum up, it
decided to cut power until the wheels stopped spinning. gyaaak!
Luckily it had a big "traction control" button near the steering wheel
that I could stab at which instantly solved my problem.
My "ASC trigger finger" is always itchy in my e39 when I fear that
electronic "help" is going to interfere or prevent some fun. :)

Neil,

The Business CD is an ibus-compatible head unit. I know it's plug and
play with any E36, but will only control the changer in post 10/95 (or
thereabouts) production 3-series. Earlier cars have a different cable
and changer.

The Business CD is about the only CD headunit that looks good in a BMW
dash, sounds great, and doesn't have all the "Tokyo by Night" flashing
LEDS, dancing dolphins and glitzy bling that the store-bought stuff
has. Sheesh, even Blaupunkt looks tacky these days. About the only
other decent-looking choice I found was Nakamichi, but I read some
internet comments that implied that their car stereos have had some
reliability issues lately, plus inconsistency of supply and service.

I'm not familiar with the radio plug on the E34, but there's a chance
it is plug and play, but it definitely will not control your existing
CD changer. At a minimum you would need to replace the changer AND the
cable. Even this may not be sufficient (I've not been able to
determine an answer to this, and it's a potentially expensive test to
undertake if the exercise proves futile).

Sorry for the OT post...wife's car for sale:

1998 Volvo V70 Cross Country (XC) Wagon, White Ext/Taupe Leather Int,
78K miles, Auto Trans, All-Wheel-Drive, Moonroof, CD Changer, Heated
Seats, 3rd-row Seat. Complete service records. $12,700. My wife and I
are the original owners of this wagon; she is the primary driver. The
car is in excellent condition inside and out. We just bought a newer
wagon from a friend, and we cant justify having two wagons in the
garage (although it is tempting). I've got a detailed two-page "for
sale" doc with all the info on the car, the maintenance records, and
pics of the car -- all are available via e-mail or snail-mail. I live
outside of Reading PA, and work in Allentown PA.

OBMWC: If BWM offered a 5-Series wagon with a 3rd row, that's what
she'd be driving! Instead, it's an MB. Ah well, at least it's still
fine German engineering.

Steve
