First off, you either should do some testing or have the battery tested to make
sure it is the
source of the problem. I would imagine it is a distinct possibility that you
battery is bad if it
is the original battery in your 1998 328is. The battery can be tested at most
garages or places
where you can purchase batteries.

I recommend the Interstate MTP-91. It fits and it works every bit as well as
your original
battery. You will need to ensure you get a vent tube extension or kit to be
sure it is properly
vented.

Check out here for local Interstate distributors:
http://www.ibsa.com/estore/dealer_locator.asp

There are other good recommendations too (like Optima, etc.) but the Interstate
MTP-91 would be my
recommendation for you.

This topic has been discussed maybe...what...a few hundred times so searching
the archives would
have probably gotten you a quicker answer (not the topic of where to buy in
Dallas Texas
specifically, but the topic of batteries, where to buy, etc. and if you got a
battery
recommendation, anyone with a computer should be able to find where to buy one
in a few minutes).

Regards,

Rich

Celisa,

I've had good luck with NAPA batteries in my cars. When I first bought my
M3, I left it in the cars of my mom while I was travelling & she put an
expensive BMW battery in. Never worked super well & only lasted 2 years,
which according to forums seemed in line with E30 M3's & dealer batteries.

I got a NAPA battery (about $70) & it lasted nearly 5 years with long
periods of dis-use (I travel a LOT & have a car to drive daily, meaning my
M3 is purely a toy). When it finally failed, I took it back got about $15
of pro-rating on a new NAPA.

I'll bet you're likely to find someone nice who'll help you put it in.

Furthermore, BMW batteries are usually serviceable. Meaning you can remove
the caps & top up the solution. This also means they should be vented
(Basically a small tube). This stuff really is easy enough.

My dad had a celica that had a constant electric drain. I think it was
finally tracked down to the stereo after several months and few batteries.

I really like the gel cel batteries.

I've always had a good experience with Sears.

That would be Douglas if the guy at the counter knew what he was talking about.
 But, I would be
skeptical that the $60 "Douglas" battery at Batteries Plus is the same exact
battery that a BMW
dealer sells for the same application for double that or more. Same
manufacturer? Maybe, but
different specs I bet.

Yes, I sort of suspect that it isn't exactly the same, but it's a
Group 95R with 950CCA, same as the stocker. It looks identical too
FWIW.

I have never had an aftermarket battery last as long as BMW OE one
either, so there must be something different.

Update:

Last nite-
I took the trunk apart and found the fuelpump
cover. After removing the cover, I found the
pump with hoses that looked fine. I even ran the
car for 10 minutes with the trunk closed, then
opened it to see if it filled with fumes.
nothing out of order there.

This morning:
So I drove the car to work this morning. Car has
1/2 tank. About 10 minutes into the drive the
gasoline smell got so pungent that I had to open
2 windows.

One suggestion is that I should start with a cold
engine, drive a few blocks, then look in the
engine bay for a fuel leak.

As I bounce down the road, my empty passenger seat squeaks incessantly.
The suspension is stock now but was a very hard Sachs Sporting kit
coil-over for many years before.
The car wears 18" run-flat Bridgestone's which to not help the matter.
The squeaking is driving me nuts and I have not begun to diagnose yet.
I am looking for guidance / experience. Anyone else out there dealt with
squeaky, manual-adjustable "Vader" style seats?

Not with that particular situation, but I've got experience hunting down squeaks
on the M3. First, check that the seat is correctly tightened to the floor.
Next, check if it's rubbing against the armrest/center console - move it to a
different postion forward or back and see if it still squeaks. Headrest? Back
panel of the seat? Incline of backrest?

(I know with the pass. seat on the M3 - power seats - if no one is in it, the
backrest will bounce on some rougher roads.)

Basically, a good approach is to systematically go through and make a
change/check sometime and see if it goes away. That's been my approach,
anyway.

Hope that helps,

1998 M3/4 - squeaks in places
1993 325is #44 JP - squeaks, rattles, shakes, who cares :-)

Possible causes:

Lose hose clamp at top of tank, under car, or under the hood.
Bad gasket/seal/o-ring on the in-tank pump or level sender
Problem with the emission evap canister filter (does this car have one?)
Problem with fuel pressure regulator
Fuel filler hose developing cracks (although it is not that old)

I've checked/tightened the hose clamp at the top
of the tank. That didn't work.

I performed the following test last nite:
removed everything in the trunk, tightened the
one hose clamp that had an adjustable clamp on it
on the fuelpump, started the car, closed the
trunk, ran it for 10 minutes, opened the trunk to
smell, and smelled nothing really. Put
everything back in the trunk.

Then today on the way to work the smell was
horrible. So I'm thinking more of a problem with
the line going to the fuel rail. yes?

I had this problem in a 31 year old FI car of another make. Smell gas when
driving after start up, couldn't find the leak. My problem was I let it warm
up before looking for the leak. It was at the fuel rail/injector interface
and when the car got hot it would expand enough to seal off the leak. I had
to start the car and immediately start looking at all the connections under
the hood and then it wasn't an obvious spray, just relatively small amounts
of rapidly evaporating dampness at the leak.

Wouldn't appear while not running - not enough pressure
Wouldn't appear when warm - sealed by expansion
A little gas goes a long way for the odor - very hard to spot
