I'd recommend Ramon LeFrancois at Bavarian Motorsport in Milpitas

I used Ray's once and they did a fine job on my suspension. I would
make his shop a regular stop if I lived anywhere near the South Bay.
Not that this means anything, but Ray Gauthier (shop owner) used to be
the GGC rally coordinator.

Well, Ramon WAS autocrossing his 750iL, and still holds the C Class
lead. But at last Sunday's GGC autocross, he showed up in a recently
purchased E30 318is. Not as easy to lay down class-leading times
while carrying 4 passengers with the 318.

It is interesting that the micro fiber towels you use absorb water. They
must be a blend of materials...perhaps cotton and microfiber. Microfiber
is used in jackets to repel water like gortex does. I am an optician and
we give away micro fiber "cleaning cloths" used for polishing lenses after
they have been cleaned with soap and water. these cloths don't absorb
water. I have used them to wax my car and work well during the buffing
process.

Matt,

How quickly do you want to track this car?

I think the comments you have gotten are right on the mark including
those concerning getting a shifter kart. The biggest problem is that I
think your budget is too low even for that. I don't think you can get a
street/track worthy car or a road worthy beater truck and track worthy
shifter kart for $2800. If you get an E36 for $2800, I doubt it will be
road worthy without some serious $.If it is road worthy, it definitely
won't survive a DE without lots of $.

Are you willing to wait a couple of years while you put money and labor
in it before you start tracking it? If so, and you love the "journey",
your plan can work.

Hello,

It seems I have converted another, my brother/sister in law just bought an
X5, now my Ma has seen the light. My mother a.k.a "the Volvo Queen" wants
to purchase a 2001 525iT. I told her she needs to get it checked out before
she hands over the cash - she agrees. The car was a CPO purchase by the
current owner and still has some warranty left, but think an once of
prevention here is not wasted money. Any recommendations for a quality
independent in Columbus (Hilliard area)? Thanks.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hello again,

I have one more question for the list. Below is a description of what the
seller of my Ma's desired E39 Touring wants to do regarding the transfer of
the car:

Their involvement is that Hugh White Honda will basically take the BMW in on
trade, and then turn around and
sell it to you for $21,350, all within about 15 minutes time. In the
process,
they will do the title transfer paperwork for you (so you can legally take
the car out of the State of Ohio),
and put on a temporary license plate so your son can drive it home. So, in
essence, you will be buying
the car from Hugh White Honda at the agreed upon price, rather than me.
The Honda dealer's involvement also helps me, since they will give me a
slightly better price on the van and save some on
the state taxes.

I understand that the dealer makes some immediate profit on the deal, and
the seller gets some trade-in credit and pays less for his Honda van.
Besides that is there anything I am missing here? Every car I have ever
bought came from a private party, never a dealer. Does anyone see anything
wrong with this proposed transaction? OH state laws different then other
states when it comes to car sales?

from my take if they actually do all the paperwork for you for the price of
21,350 (does that include tax?) and that was the price your ma agreed to
with the private buyer then go for it.

I hate dealing with paperwork when I buy a car from a private party. it's
actually worth a couple hundred $$ for someone to do it for me.

As long as the price is the same to you (or your mother) then I would not
have a problem with this.

Doing it as a trade via a dealer HERE would save $1,494.50 in sales tax (7%
rate) on the new van. What is the
tax rate there? Maybe the seller should discount the price a little for
the hassle of going to the dealer since they are
the ones saving money?

In any case, you (or she) should be just fine with having a dealer do the
work - and it is actually a little safer for you
anyway if we assume the seller does not have the title in hand.

I have a '84 318i E30, with 208,000 miles on the rig and it runs like a
champ... Daily driver of 100 miles a day to and from work. Never ever gives
me any trouble.

However, I have noticed a slight hesitation/faint skipping while
accelerating from stopped position. It's hard to describe really it's
almost like the clutch slipping or engine misses one firing, then immediate
recovery and it only happens when the gas is pressed down good for
acceleration. Cruising this never happens; it pokes along at 80-85 and never
misses a beat?

In tank fuel pump is new 4 months ago, main pump has not been changed?

Any thoughts where to go and what to look at.

Thanks
Art

Thanks:

No racing booties, though they do have some neat child seats at Babies R Us.

I'm sooo happy to be in a town and state with strong public education. My *HS*
alma mater back in NJ charges $28k/yr for day students ($34k for boarding).
Looks like that family tradition may have ended with me. I'll be able to
redirect some of those funds to have my daughter chasing me around the track in
an E?? in 17 yrs. Actually, knowing how long I keep cars, I should be about
ready to hand down my E36 at that time.

I spent time on a Porsche list earlier in life (1994 before buying my first
BMW) and they often included family members (kids and pets) in their sig files.
Seemed to provide a little more texture and personality to the list. They
also named their cars more frequently. (Odd trivia: Cheryl Tiegs, who was on
that list, had a 911 called "tiger")

No, I haven't thought of a name for my car, or my daughter...

I've learned by experience not to trust a butt-dyno. If I buy them I'll
install then with immediate before and after dyno runs as the only way
to see performance changes.
I've called them, and their claims are anecdotal, not dyno tested, and
also won't take a return since its an electrical item.

When I sit on them, they make an impression on my behind. Once the spark is
hot enough, hotter is no improvement. BMW coils are hot enough.
