The IAIBMWSP has only 3 shops listed for IL, and only 1 near me.

Does anyone have any opinion regarding Euroquipe in St. Charles, IL or any
other recommendation for someone in the NW Suburbs of Chicago?

Thanks,
Roan.

My 2 cents on the panel - all of the underbody stuff works together as a
system, and is only as strong as the weakest link. If you reinforce one
part, then the next weakest part in the system will fail. The JTD panel is
a fine piece, but if your fender liners aren't in good shape, or your
bumper cover is torn, it will never be secure.

If you habitually hit parking blocks, high curbs, berms, cones, squirrels,
etc., then no matter what you do, it will all eventually tear out. Each
time you hit something with the lower lip of your air dam, it puts stress
on all the fasteners (and the plastic surrounding the fastener holes) on
all of the underbody stuff. As these fasteners loosen up, it allows the
underbody stuff to move around, putting more stress on the mounting points,
until something eventually tears through. The increased stress will tear
out the next mounting point, and the one after that, and so on, until the
parts are dragging.

So, here's what I suggest - it's not perfect, and won't be indestructible,
but it's as good as anything else. Buy new fender liners, and reinforce
the three mounting holes at the bottom of the liner with some sheet metal
and pop rivets. Replace all of the little square white plastic pieces that
the body screws go into with new ones (they're pretty cheap at the
dealer). If you really want to get fancy, you can replace the white
plastic pieces with M6 nutserts, and use M6 bolts to fasten everything
together. You can also replace the tinnerman clips that the sheet metal
screws go into with sheet metal reinforcements and M6 nutserts. Use fender
washers under the heads of the bolts (or screws) to spead the load, and
help support all of the plastic pieces. Basically, reinforce everything
until you're back to the metal parts on the car.

Then, use either the JTD panel, or stock panels reinforced as above. Use
fender washers under the heads of all the screws/bolts that you use to
mount the underpanel.

Highly recommended - add some support to the front center of each fender
liner, by using a chain or a piece of aircraft cable from the fender liner
to the bumper support. The support should be tight enough to take some of
the weight off the front vertical screw that holds the fender liner in
place. I don't really recommend using anything solid here - you want the
bumper/underpanel/fender liner to be able to move up if you run over a
parking block.

Hope this helps,

Jim Ochi

With the impending sale of my Touring, I won't be needing these racks.
They are the factory cross bars and use the built in mounting holes
below the rubber strips on the roof. I know they were crazy money when
new, are they worth anything now? Probably not real cheap to ship
(sorta big, not heavy). Let me know if anyone is interested or I will
throw them on Ebay. I can dig up pictures if needed...

Carlos,

That often means that the switch is on the way out. Other signs are
brake lights that don't work consistently, or that are on all the time,
and cruise control that wont engage consistently.

Chet, did you miss a payment? Once you write and send BMW a "check",
the light will stop blinking. :^)

You're right, if you could read the display, it would be telling you
what you were supposed to check. I'm not familiar with the system on
the E36, but on the E30 there is a button to push to make the "check"
light stop blinking. Do you have the owner's manual? Please see my
reply to the guy with the false brake pad warning light warning. Or
else John will tell you what to do. :^)

Thanks for the interest, everyone! The sportvagen actually sold about an
hour after I posted the pics! The new owner is picking it up tomorrow. I
picked up the Family Truckster yesterday. I can't recall the last time I
drove something with only 10 miles on it! Quite nice, for a ginormous
truck. Was doing 80mph at only 2200 rpm, so hopefully the fuel economy
won't kill me. Will really, really miss the Bimmer though.

[And for those of you that asked about the nice house in the background of
the pics, I wish it were mine! It's a historic house owned by the town I
live in, where I got married, actually. About 1 mile from my little shack.
I took the pics there because my driveway was wet from washing it, and a big
hill blocks the evening sun, so it was kinda dark. I do love that house
though. If I ever make any real money, I'm going to build something just
like it.... :-) ]

Ok, ok, mea culpa, I've been kinda sorta threatening to sell this wagon for
some time now, but the giant Family Truckster (first 2006 model year Nissan
Armada) we ordered is finally here (in yet another demonstration of my
remarkable market timing - yep, NOW get a giant SUV with bad gas mileage),
so it's time to sell the sportwagon. Six vehicles for two adults is just
ridiculous, not to mention the complete dearth of room to park everything,
so . . . .

It's a 2000 BMW 528iT sportwagon that I bought as a present to my wife two
years ago (when she refused to get a mini-van). We're the 2nd owner, 59,800
miles, silver/black, excellent condition inside and out. Options include
Sport package (inc. sport seats, M-steering wheel, sport suspension,
shadowline sport trim, 17" BBS wheels), Steptronic transmission, heated
seats, rain sensing wipers, self-leveling rear suspension, electrochromatic
rear view mirror, metallic paint, power moonroof, premium audio system, rear
side airbags, compact disc changer, and maybe one or two other options I've
forgotten, though no ski sack for some reason. I also have a spare set of
wheels with snow tires mounted. All services done and up to date.

According to Edmunds.com, the wagon is worth $17,075 on trade-in, $19,183 as
a private party sale, and $21,670 if one were to buy from a dealer. The
Kelly Blue Book is broader, but the midpoint is close: $16,700, $20,180 and
$24,115, respectively. First reasonable offer takes it, or else it gets
traded in when I pick up the Truckster. Let me know if you're interested!
(and/or if anyone has a good opinion on what it's worth, let me know.)

Thanks,

It's been a while since I had a functioning OBC (ripped it out years ago)
but typically a <check> means to look at the OBC to see what it's saying.
Could be low coolant, brake light, ice warning, etc

Vehicle:
'95 S50 US-spec M3 (OBDI)
~75,3XX miles

Problem/background info:
No perceived running problems yet the 'CHECK' light in the center of the
IP info area illuminates at seemingly random intervals. Sometimes it is
on for a few seconds after start-up and then goes out, sometimes it
never illuminates. Occasionally it blinks and other times remains lit
for extended periods.
Note: This is not the 'CHECK ENGINE' light as it is not illuminated and
located on the left side of the same display area.

Stomp test reveals only a code 1444 which indicates no DME diagnostic
problem exists.

My on-board computer display is on the fritz and is trying to tell me
something (two things from what I can tell) yet I can't decipher what it
says due to the faulty display.

Question(s):
1) What the heck does this 'CHECK' light mean?
2) Could this light be telling me "Look at the on-board computer
stupid!"?

Mostly this is an annoyance but I'd prefer not to simply remove the bulb
unless I absolutely can't fix/find the root cause.

Thanks for the help!
Chet Dawes

I don't think "ice warning" is covered by the 'check' light, I believe the
temp gauge/chime handles that simple function without involving the check
light (sort of like the clock with the memo function).

Rich
