Howdy, all, finally gotten around to taking some pictures, in response to
requests for a couple of interested parties, so I thought I'd share
(especially as how the exterior shots did come out kinda good :-)

Subject: FS: 2000 528iT sports package

Ok, ok, mea culpa, I've been kinda sorta threatening to sell this wagon for
some time now, but the giant Family Truckster (first 2006 model year Nissan
Armada) we ordered is finally here (in yet another demonstration of my
remarkable market timing - yep, NOW get a giant SUV with bad gas mileage),
so it's time to sell the sportwagon. Six vehicles for two adults is just
ridiculous, not to mention the complete dearth of room to park everything,
so . . . .

It's a 2000 BMW 528iT sportwagon that I bought as a present to my wife two
years ago (when she refused to get a mini-van). We're the 2nd owner, 59,800
miles, silver/black, excellent condition inside and out. Options include
Sport package (inc. sport seats, M-steering wheel, sport suspension,
shadowline sport trim, 17" BBS wheels), Steptronic transmission, heated
seats, rain sensing wipers, self-leveling rear suspension, electrochromatic
rear view mirror, metallic paint, power moonroof, premium audio system, rear
side airbags, compact disc changer, and maybe one or two other options I've
forgotten, though no ski sack for some reason. I also have a spare set of
wheels with snow tires mounted. All services done and up to date.

According to Edmunds.com, the wagon is worth $17,075 on trade-in, $19,183 as
a private party sale, and $21,670 if one were to buy from a dealer. The
Kelly Blue Book is broader, but the midpoint is close: $16,700, $20,180 and
$24,115, respectively. First reasonable offer takes it, or else it gets
traded in when I pick up the Truckster. Let me know if you're interested!
(and/or if anyone has a good opinion on what it's worth, let me know.)

Thanks,

Yup, it is time to replace the sorry factory
springs/shocks/struts on my 96 328i.

Does anyone have any cheap shocks/struts/springs
(preferably not stock ones, I've already got them :)?
I also probably need to replace the rear mounts, so
I'll need them too. I don't know how much longer I'm
going to hold onto this car, so I don't want to dump
lots of money into it. Having said that, I don't want
to put crap on it either.

Email me off line with what you've got.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

I have to ask... what's wrong with the springs? If the answer is
'nothing', I'd say just get (new) two front struts, two rear shocks,
RSMs, and a hardware kit to replace all the non-reusable fasteners that
you "lake test".

Have you had the car since new? When did you get it? The factory
suspension is not "crap", it's just not as aggressive as many of the
enthusiasts on the board might like. If you're not likely to autocross
or track the car, or sell the car to an enthusiast, you may want to
seriously consider sticking with a stock or stock-ish suspension.

Your cheapest option if you decide you want to replace everything is to
find someone with a take-off M3 suspension that they're willing to part
with. (e.g. I've got take-off struts/shocks/springs from a '95 M3 that
I'd be willing to part with if you want to talk.) It is an upgrade from
the base 3-er stuff, but very streetable. However, depending on the
mileage (not exactly sure what mine has -- P.O. removed), you may be
buying new shocks/struts anyway. That was why my first thought was just
to do shocks/struts/ RSMs.

I might have some E46 RSMs w/ Z3 reinforcement plates laying around
somewhere too, but need to dig in the garage for them.

If you're buying anything new, talk to Jack or Karl at
http://www.elephantmotorsports.com/
and tell them I sent you.

Good luck.

Paul,

Understood. I'd say then that if you're going through the trouble to
replace it, you'd be well served to put new stock bits on. I'm not sure
there's anything in the aftermarket that promises (or more importantly
delivers) longer useful life. 60k gets you anywhere from 2-5 years
depending on your annual mileage. That will give you good ride in the
short run and a selling point in the long run. The likelihood of
finding a super-low-mileage take-off stock E36 suspension is low.

If you have your parts lined up, a Bentley and/or a knowledgeable
friend, decent set of tools, appropriate spring compressors (Autozone
rents/sells two different varieties IIRC), and an impact wrench (air or
electric), you're looking at comfortable one-day job.

Said it before and will again... If you're buying anything new, talk to
Jack or Karl at http://www.elephantmotorsports.com/ and tell them I sent
you. At least one of us will benefit from my referral (though no
guarantees as to who that will be).

Good luck. If you're local to Metro Detroit I can lend a hand. I'm an
excellent supervisor, for example. If not, maybe someone else will offer.

:-)

BTW, Paul...

If you don't have the ETK, the diagrams on this site will be helpful:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/

Of course, when I say "stock", I mean stock, stock-ish, or inexpensive
functional equivalent.

I didn't mean to suggest that the OEM stuff was crap,
just that my current OEM suspension is crap (it has
about 107k miles on it). Having said that, I've read
that the OEM stuff is generally only good for about
60k miles??

I'm open to OEM stuff, but I don't want to buy someone
elses crap if you known what I mean. Replacing this
stuff isn't going to be a 10 minute job (especially
for me since I've never done it before on a BMW...
Mustangs no problem). As such, I just want to make
sure that what I'm buying is going to last me a while.

I'm not planning on autox this car (I've got another
one for that), so I'd just assume that it ride nicely.
I'm only not looking to slam it to the ground, I'll
leave that to others.

Pulling the bulb is so much like work. Put a piece of black electrical

Subject: (WTB) Aluminum Trailer
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

My brother is looking for an open aluminum trailer, preferably with a solid
deck (aluminum tread plate but others considered) and twin axles capable of
hauling a car but not much larger than that.

Any leads, let me know. Reasonably close to Ohio would be nice. Feel free
to post this or forward it to other lists, have them contact me directly at
rdorffer "at" yahoo.com with additional information.

Thanks.

Regards,

Rich
