Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere to look
up SI bulletins. I'm assuming they're not a matter of
public record, but thought I'd ask. There's a bunch I
would like to read up on, but I'm wondering
specifically about SI 510691373. If anyone (Brett?)
could let me know what this one is about, I'd really
appreciate it.

Thanks,
Brian

www.bmwtechinfo.com for real information.

www.alldata.com for bullshit information

The bulletin you are looking for is not on the BMW site, which means
it's no longer valid.

If I remember, I'll look through my paper bulletins at the shop and see
if I can find it, on Monday.

I guess I'll see soon enough what happens on my S38. I went from the dino
(20w50 Kendall, I think) that the PO had when I bought it, to a syn blend
(half 10w40 half 20w50 Valvoline) that dropped consumption significantly.
In a couple weeks I'm planning on trying a case of full synthetic
Valvoline I have lying around to see if the trend continues or not.

High 8s. Low compared to the 14 or so of conventional green coolant that
embrittles the plastic parts.

Brett said: And yes, we use the ridiculous Castrol TWS 10W60 for the late S
engines too.

Since no one that I'm aware of makes a 60w, what choice do we have if we
want to maintain our warranty through BMW? I suppose one could argue specs
should something happen, but with the 100k mile warranty on the grenade,
errr, motor, I think I'll stick with the Castrol gigabuck oil.

Race car gets Redline 20w-50 due to our mild, temperate climate here in
Vegas and the Central Cal tracks I race at.

I've seen a few here and there (Lubrimoly, Amsoil and HKS are the ones I
can remember offhand) but I don't recall any of those being any less
costly than the Castrol anyhow. My somewhat outdated TIS only shows the
Castrol and some euro brand called Veedol as being approved.

Veedol? Damn, there's a name I haven't heard for years.

Veedol was a "new" oil that we introduced to my gas station in
Australia. We were told it was the "European Castrol".

Maybe we were told the truth......

<http://www.ianbyrne.free-online.co.uk/lubes.htm>

"The American lubricant manufacturer Veedol set up an office in Hamburg in
1925, and soon became a major force in lubricants in Germany. Soon after
1970, Getty Oil Company, which had acquired Veedol as part of the Tidewater
Associated Oil company, sold its European activities to Burmah: these
included the rights to the Veedol name and a refinery in Gaeta, Italy.
Burmah kept Veedol separate from its main Castrol brand, and the name is
still used in several countries by BP which bought Burmah in 2000; in
Germany it claims to be the largest selling oil in workshops. "

Duckhams! Another brand name I haven't heard for a long. Last time I
bought that was when I was living in London.
