IIRC you can get manuals off the BMW website.

but then maybe I'm dreaming.

I have a 2002 M5 and it only has the owners manual. I understand there was
some other documentation and I was wondering where to get it. I am looking
for the Onboard computer manual, radiopass BMW booklet, and is there any
quick guide to the navigation system?

The pass low beam relay appears to have died on my 5er. Anyone have a
deceased LKM they could part with for cheap? Or suggestions on where to get
a relay?

Cheers,

So what do you mean by "defective drive shaft". Do you mean a defective
U-joint or two equals a defective drive shaft?

Followed by Kevin:

>After writing my first reply, I got to thinking that you might also want to

The motor mounts and trans mounts are original as far as I know, the car has
134k on it. So those might need to be done anyway. Anything else that I
should be looking at, or have we uncovered them all?

My list of stuff to check so far is the following:
Flex disc (guibo)
Center bearing and rubber surround/support
Trans mounts
Motor mounts

Thanks - again.

center bearing dust boot was torn to shreds. I did replace
the whole kit n' caboodle 'cause it had 230k on it.

On most (all?) BMW driveshafts, the U-joints are not
replaceable or serviceable, so yes defective joints =
defective driveshaft. The DLS (Portland) reman unit has
greasable u-joints with zerk fittings.

I had the opportunity to dig into this problem last night and here's
what I found so far:

CV joint boots are intact, no tears or cracks at all. Movement of the
axle through the joint appears to have no slop.

Rear brakes are about 75% worn but the caliper dust seals are intact
and there is little resistance pressing the pistons back into the
calipers. Although they are due a rebuild, I don't think there's any
binding here.

With the calipers removed there was still grinding and resistance when
trying to turn the wheels. I backed off the parking brake adjusters
approximately 1/3 of a revolution and "Hey Presto", no more
resistance. I adjusted the parking brakes a couple of months ago when
I installed new brake rotors, there was no rubbing then. I removed the
right side rotor and found a nice coating of rust forming on the
inside of the rotor hat. I am guessing that I adjusted the parking
brakes too close to the rotor (they would stop the car at 4 clicks of
the handle) and as soon as the rotors started to rust, the pads
started to bind.

I did also notice that when I turn each wheel, the axle will rotate a
small amount before the differential starts to rotate the other axle.
The amount of movement is very small, maybe 1-2 degrees, but I am
wondering if this is normal or if it is indicative of some sort of
differential issue.

I will put everything back together this weekend after I install new
pads, bleed the brakes and make a few suspension adjustments. I'll
post again after I test drive the car and verify that the problem is
gone.

Marc/Carlos,
All SRS faults are not created equal of course....so if your fault is
for some other reason this is probably irrelevant. Does your SRS light
come on for a bit after start-up and then extinguish after a period of
time while driving? If so that is indicative of a failed seat pad or
seat belt sensor. The system is not really disabled if that's the case.
I'm speaking from memory here as I don't have the literature in front of
me. But the following is my understanding (from my former '95 318ti) of
the function of the seat pad sensor:

The passenger-side SRS looks at both the seat belt clasp sensor and the
sensor pad to determine if A) there is a passenger and B) if they have
their seatbelt on. If both are false the algorithm assumes there is no
passenger and therefore the pass-side SRS is not deployed in the event
of an accident. This feature saves us all a few bucks in insurance
premiums I'd bet.
The same literature (sales brochure - standard safety gear - I think)
also indicated it would deploy the airbag based on different thresholds
depending on if the passenger seatbelt = true/false. I assume this
would imply if the sensor pad = true and the seat belt = false it may
deploy at lower speed/impact thresholds? Just an assumption.

So, if you put a trick-circuit in to make the SRS 'think' there is a
sensor pad.....and it 'tricks' the SRS control algorithm into believing
there is no passenger rather than setting the fault code.....will the
airbag deploy when/if you want it to? I'd be careful especially if you
have 5 pt. harnesses in the car (passenger side) and an aftermarket
seat. Then again, do you want the SRS to deploy at all with a seating
and harness system it was not designed to work with? If that's the
case, removal of the SRS all together could save you a few pounds in
dead weight!

Personally, if running OE seatbelts I'd let the fault report the real
situation....perhaps pulling the bulb.....so that the SRS algorithm
assumes the worst-case condition. In this case, that means it could
deploy the pass-side SRS in the event of an accident even if nobody is
seated on that side of the car.

I'm going to be headed down this same path in the near future as both my
seats will be removed from my M3 to make room for racing shells.....

If I'm off-base with the function I've described above, please feel free
to set the record straight! My memory is not as sharp as it once was
and BMW has a way of changing/improving the technology across
years/models without notifying me. ;-)

Hope that helps,
Chet Dawes

I'm running a pair of recaro SRD seats in my car, and didn't think much
about the airbag light being on (telling me that the passenger airbag is
disabled) because I rarely have a passenger in this car. Just went
through annual inspection, and was failed for having the light on, so
I'm going to have to re-install the stock seat and reset the light in
the next 10 days to pass for the year. I'll probably pick up on Neil
Simon's led and put a sensor pad in the passenger SRD.

Everybody's butt is different, but I absolutely love the Recaro SRD
seat (or whatever they call it these days). Though it will be awfully
tight if you're much over 200 lbs. The high/stiff lower thigh bolster
can make them a little tougher for ingress/egress but once you're in
it's fine.

Ben Keyes has my old one in his 04 STi right now, and I think he'd
back me up on both it's comfort and more than adequate support for a
track day here and there...

Ben also had a pair of Sparco sport seats in his house a while back -
I didn't like them nearly as much as the Recaro. Don't EVER consider
a Cobra Sidewinder. Absolute junk. I'm sitting in one now (converted
to an office chair) and that's all it is good for.

I believe the ASC light coming on has been solved. On the end of the ASC
cable is a keyed termination with a tension adjuster. I adjusted the cable
tension to where the pivot stops just barely came off the rest stop and the
problem hasn't presented itself again.

Thanks all.

Yes, last night I heard a rhythmic clicking coming from the left rear of my car
on my drive home. Didn't go away with brakes. Got home. Checked lug nuts,
pulled wheel, brakes looked OK...

There was a pebble wedged in the treads of my tire. Glad it wasn't a nail
(lots of construction going on in my neighborhood).

Sometimes it is the *stooopid* little things that are wrong. Start simple in
your troubleshooting.

Replacing a blown Bilstein in the back of my E36 coupe as I write this.
Finding (to my surprise) my JT Designs RSMs to be totally shot (at least the
bushings are). Needing to get this back together today means I need to
replace these with dealer parts. The dealer RSM of choice is an E46 soft-top
bush? Is that right? Any wisdom would really be appreciated (and reply to me
directly please).

The JT Designs RSM doesn't work very well --- it still has the same
weakness as the stock parts. The M3 ones will break eventually, too, but
they are tougher than the normal ones. I think the Ground Control RSMs are
the only ones that won't suffer from this problem --- for a future change.

Yeah I believe that's the best choice for OEM, E46 M3 or E46 M3C.

I absolutely hate the JTD ones, and even though I hate GC itself, I use
their RSMs because I think they're the best ones. <shrug>
