After being with State farm since 1987, I'm on the verge of moving my auto and
homeowners insurance to Allstate, and I wanted a quick sanity check before
moving. The reason I'm moving is simple economics...$1400/yr in premiums for a
house a 1997 BMW M3 and a 2002 Audi Allroad with two adult (late 30s early 40s)
drivers. While probing into the pricing differences, my wife uncovered an
interesting tidbit...my rates with State Farm are apparently still impacted by
an accident I had back in 1995. I didn't realize that it took 10 years to wipe
an accident off of the books (No tickets or accidents since).

Another close follower in our comparison was the insurance offered by Costco,
though I'm a bit more comfortable (familiar?) with the Allstate brand.

Any major condemnations of Allstate before I pull the trigger? Looking for
structural items that I need to worry about...non tolerance of the M being on
the track for DEs, bad responses to claims in terms of conservative claim
treatment or aggressive rate adjustments afterwards...

Thanks

Marc,

I've heard, although have not verified, that Allstate excludes
coverage for track events. Ask for a copy of the policy to confirm
before pulling the trigger.

Allstate does not cover on track incidents. They changed their policy
about 3 years ago (while I was with them). In fact, they don't even
cover accidents that happen *on the premises* of a racetrack. So if you
go to your favorite professional auto race and someone hits your car,
technically they can deny your claim.

<sarcasm>Sure sounds like they care about their customers!</sarcasm>

Take a look at Wawanesa; they don't do motorcycles (I use State Farm for
that and my race trailer insurance) but they have been a pleasure to
work with otherwise and were very competitive on price. They may not
service all 50 states though.

Cheers,

Brian

If you ask enough people, you will get a horror story about every insurance
company. State Farm is one of the better ones. Perhaps calling your agent
and asking about the rate may help. Plus it is a small advantage to be with
one company for a longer time.

I agree. Isn't that pretty pathetic?

I have been insured with Allstate for 15 years and all in all I am
very pleased. The rates are lower than I have found anywhere and they
have been fantastic to deal with in three major claims. I totalled a
Porsche 928 S4 on the highway, totally my fault and they covered me
(negotiated value which was more than I paid for the car) and the
premium went up nominally.

They specifically exclude any claims ocurring at any racetrack which I
think is a little draconian, however expecting any insurance company
to cover possible damage at Driver's Ed events I think is wrong;
unless you specifically state that that's what you are going to be
doing with your car before they write the policy. They do not
consider the additional risk of you driving on the track when they
calculate your premiums so why _should_ they cover you?

BTW, I don't work for an insurance company and I have done 18 track
days so far this year including Friday and today at Road America,
tomorrow too...

Additional risk? What additional risk? It is a controlled environment of
vehicles all traveling in the same direction, well maintained cars, in car
instruction, no cell phones, eating while driving, corner workers, etc.

It truly should be lower risk.

:-)

Later,

Rich - going to Allstate with all of my insurance in one week.

HaHaHaHa.

I am writing this from my laptop in a hotel room in Plymouth Wisonsin,
I spent the last two days tear-assing around Road America -- I'll be
back there tomorrow. I hit 130 MPH approximately 55 times today and
then braked at the limit of my tires adhesion before entering turns 1
and 12. 100 MPH through the kink coming within inches of the rumble
strip at turn-in and apex with only six feet of grass between the car
and the concrete at track-out; I don't think that's what the
underwriters had in mind when the wrote my policy (Comprehensive, $1K
deductible for ~$600/Year). BTW, today was my 18th track day this
year and I am having a blast. The only fly in this weekend's ointment
is the 90% chance of rain tomorrow, at least I have a set of S-03's
with me.

Good thing about moving to more humid climate: AC seems soo much more
effective on those hot days.
Bad thing about moving to more humid climate: More water condenses
inside the system.

I've got a fishtank in the center console of my '99 528. With the fan
on, it gurgles nicely. (this is not helpful if you need to pee, btw)
Heavy acceleration, even in this car, can release a cup of water onto
the carpet through the rear vents. While this makes me laugh, the wife
is not as amused.
I have located a pair of condensate drain tubes that emerge near the
transmission and terminate near the rear tranny support. They are clear
as far as I can tell. Probing with wire and blowing with compressed air
released no gunk that I could see.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? My Bentley manuals are packed
up in a box somewhere under a pile of other boxes.

thanks!

Anyone know the UUC TME torque specs for the red's?
They arrived yesterday but upon opening them up this
morning, there are no instructions, nothing. My other
set of red's disintegrated in about 4 months, perhaps
I had too much torque, and I don't want to make that
mistake again. Thanks!

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Car is '87 325iS. On the way to track this morning I saw that the brake
lights come on whenever the clutch is depressed. That's the problem.

I've wiggled the wires around the switches at the brake and clutch pedal
(even installed a new brake light switch b/c the old one was beginning
to hang) w/no change.

What could be causing this?

It's certainly got to cause confusion for people behind me to see brake
lights every time I shift.

TIA

Clutch pedal has worn through misrouted brake light switch wires?

That's about the only way I could think of this scenario working. Clutch
pedal has a switch for the cruise, it has no relation to the brake lights
other than the cruise control unit....Oh, there's a thought. Cruise control
unit is full of water? Causing a short to the brake light circuit?

Cruise control unit is below the left front kick speaker.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

After thinking and thinking and thinking it occurred to me that I've
previously had a problem w/the brake light staying on, but never any
issue related to the clutch pedal. Turns out the bracket to which the
brake light and switch for the cruise is attached became loose and
misaligned. A wrench, a gentle push, and Clarence is feeling good
again, ready for track tomorrow.

Try again...not luck the first time....

Went to put my adjustable clutch stop on a 2002 330i that used to be on
a 2001 330i. Common issue: when the clutch stop is adjusted where I want
it, the car starter won't energize due to the safety switch on the
clutch pedal.

On the 2001, there were two plunger switches on the clutch pedal arm,
one for the starter and one for the cruise disengage, and I just tie
wrapped the starter plunder down and all was fine.

On the 2002, the assembly has been updated, and I can't find anything to
allow me shorten the throw and still get the car to start.

Anybody else successfully dealt with this?
Thanks,
Rob Norwalk
