I sent this yesterday but it disappeared into the
ether so here it goes again.

Thought I'd get back regarding my post a while back.
My 92 535i was having an intermittent ABS/ASC fault,
most of the time both lights on, sometimes the ABS
would light first. After one mechanic, who is not
that familiar w/BMWs, struck out, I took the car to
Autobahn in Natick MA. John replaced a defective LF
speed sensor and questionable ABS pump relays. A 270
mile drive today, in the rain, to Chatham NY and back,
showed no problems.

The interesting part is that my stereo, which had been
dropping out, lots of popping and crackling, also
seemed to be fine during the trip. Nothing was done to
the stereo directly. Must be a coincidence, No?

Not really. I had an odd cyclic static burst/drop in signal level that
showed up on the radio in my E30. Showed up about the time the brake lining
light went on. Turned out to be caused by one of the wires to the wear
sensor ever so lightly brushing against my brake rotor. Moving the wire away
fixed the problem. Replacing the pads and bypassing the sensor turned off
the brake lining light. Perhaps there was a similar situation with the wheel
sensor in your case.

I am looking for a headlight upgrade for our 95 M3 and was wondering if
anyone has used any of the non-OEM glass lensed replacements that you
see on eBay and such. I am not interested in 'angel eyes' or any of the
real ricey looking kits...but a few almost look like decent knock off's
of the Euro headlights at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

I have polished the plastic lenses on our car and they are pretty clear
but I just feel like I am driving blind sometimes at night in that car.
The Hella's on my E30 are soooo much better at putting light on the
road.

Thanks for any advice,
Dave T.

Headlamp optics are one thing around with which I would not fart. You don't
know the source or quality of the eBay lamps. I installed Depo (Korean) H4
lamps on my van and have been disappointed with the light distribution and beam
control. You know you like Genuine Hella lamps, why not use them again? Get
the real thing (OEM Bosch or Hella or ZKW, Euro ellipsoid H1 lamps with glass
covers) from someplace like http://turnermotorsport.com or http://umnitza.com
and start seeing the road ahead.

What did you use? I need to do this on one of my Honda's headlights but
haven't gotten around to it.

I don't know how the e36 front end compares to the e34 besides the clear covers
... I put old Hella lamps in my e34 - not a plug-and-play job, but it really
wasn't too bad.

Subject: <E34> Hella Headlamp conversion. It worked, basically.
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The original ellipsoidal lamps on my E34 touring were in a bad state - 3 of
the 4 lamps needed to be replaced. I had a set of H4/H1 Hella E-Code lamps
sitting in the garage. Rather than pay hudreds for crappy replacement
factory lighting, I decided to try fitting the Hellas to my car.

The low beams were pretty straight forward. I had hoped to be able to
convert the old lamps in to buckets for the Hellas so if I wanted to upgrade
to the Cibie CSRs I could. It didn't work out. If I had wanted to turn it
into a much bigger project I could have worked something out, but I just
didn't have the time.

I pulled the guts from the ellipsoidal lamps, marked the housings .48" back
from the flange of the glass - that's a measurement I took from the Hella
lights - from the flange of the glass to the pads where the lamps are
supported. I cut the plastic housing between the glass and the line I
marked. When the lens came off I ground down to the mark with a 12" disk
sander. Then using a sanding drum on a drill press I chamfered the inside
of the housing so the Hella H4 lamp would fit down in at the right level.

The low-beam housing is structurally sound on its own, so I just ran a heavy
bead of clear silicone around the reflector on the Hella lamp and set it
into the trimmed Ellipsoid housing. Clamped it lightly to hold things
together and went on to the next light.

The high beams were more of a project. If I hadn't lost one to a large rock
I probably would have left them alone, as the high-beams put out pretty good
light with 100W bulbs. On these lights the reflector bucket is a
significant structural component. The profile of the existing reflector
bucket closely matches the reflector on the Hella H1 lamp.

The first step was to cut the lens from the front. I marked the housing
.48" back from the lens flange and started cutting. A real handy tool on
this job was a wire hacksaw blade. A thin wire with a spiral cutting
feature the full length. I ran a pin through the holes on the ends for
t-handles and could cut through the plastic quite easily.

After the lens was off I used the disc sander again to trim the housing to
the right height. I then used the wire hacksaw blade and let it lay against
the back of the reflector and cut each rib between the outer ring and the
reflector. After the "spider" was free from the reflector I trimmed and
notched until the new lamp fit at the right height and orientation. I
cleaned everything with soap and water and gave things a good wipe down with
isopropyl alchohol.

I mixed up a batch of JB Weld (good to 600 degrees F) and glued the spider
to the back of the Hella H1 lamp.

While the glue was curing I cut off the old headlamp connectors and
installed old fashioned 3-prong connectors. At this point I'm not going to
rewire the low-beam lights to use the high-beam filament. I might later.

One more thing I had to do - the chrome trim rings fit on with little
spring-detent features. They didn't fit well with the new lights. Using a
hammer and punch I changed the shape of the detents from \/ to \| moving the
low point toward the rear of the lamp. That was all it took.

All in all, about a 1/2 day job.

I have a couple of pictures. If anyone is interested I'll post them.

I thought good ole Jim Powell also sold good headlights with some bling
in 'em to satisfy the E36 M3 crowd. www.apexcone.com is what I
remember.

Anywhoo my car has ellipsoid ZKWs and since they're kinda poorly aimed
(I never bother as I wouldn't know what I'm doing) then I have
headlights that perform as well as a sealed beamed E30! :-)

Carlos

Is anyone familiar with bailment law and auto
insurance? In particular, if you loan you car to
someone and it is then involved in an accident (just
damage to the car, nothing else), who's auto insurance
covers it and who's deductible applies?

Additionally, assuming the answer is the owner's
insurance covers the damage to the car, can the
owner's deductible be recovered from the driver
(assuming the driver also has auto insurance) under
driver's auto property damage insurance?

Thanks,
Paul

Price I guess. While I certainly don't mind spending the money, right
now I just don't have $500 for a pair of top quality lights, but if I
could find something for under $200 that was better than what the car
has now I would be happy....for now.

I used Maguires clear plastic polish. About $8. Works pretty well.

I watched all six ads on the Mercury web site:

There are some with a brunette, is that who you mean? Disappointing
that there were no redheads. Anyway, the first site above said it was

Thanks. There was no damage/injury/etc. except for
the poor BMW.

DIFFERENT SITUATION:

I've been told that the owner's insurance is applied.
However, assuming the situation was that there was
personal injury or property damaged involved to a
third party (which, thankfully there isn't in this
case), and said personal injury results in damages
exceeding the owner's limits, it doesn't seem to make
sense that the owner would be liable for the
damages(assuming no negligence in loaning the car).
