No opinions on those, I've been running the ones that Bimmerworld sells in
my E30 for a bit over a year now. They squeak. When I e-mailed James Clay
about it, he said that they always assemble them with some fancy schmancy
anti-sieze (I have the specifics at home if you want them), and that they
never squeak when so installed. I was a bit disappointed that he hadn't
told me that when I bought them to begin with. Now I'll have to take the
car half apart again to lube them up. Anyway, the point is, find out what
lube works best with your chosen bushings before you install them.

Malcolm, I have a whole list of dealers who give discounts. However, most
of them mark up the parts over BMW list price, and after the discount,
you're still paying BMW list, or more. That is why I specified that I'm
looking for the dealers that discount from BMW list price.

Circle is apparently one of the dealers that offers these deeper discounts,
though. Thanks to Dennis Wynne for that, and he also mentioned Pacific and
Crevier.

I agree on the markup point. I believe some of this has gotten worse

rather meaningless.

Though I haven't shopped them in some time, Circle was, I believe,
cost + 20%, which was rather more consistent and
predictable. Will-call at Alexander BMW in Los Angeles was similar,
though they've since then discontinued those discounts. I knew lots
of people who got good, consistent pricing from Pacific, but I could
never get anything below list out of them.

Lately, I've established a relationship with the parts department at
Crevier (coincidentally the dealership closest to work/home) and get
consistent and reasonable, if not necessarily the best, pricing. And
this relationship affords me some benefits such as extended
returnability policies (special-order, electrical) and other incidentals.

Scott,

I admit that I did not know the "mark-up over list, then discount" trick
was prevalent. Thanks for the info.

I've found Pacific to be pretty generous with their
discount. They also tend to charge more for shipping,
which eliminates savings when buying in small
quantities.

I've used Circle for my last two purchases. Good
discount there as well, shipping is a little more
reasonable. Plus they are closer to me.

When I've done direct price comparisons in the past
I've not found one dealer that is consistently less
expensive than the rest. Prices on individual parts
seem to vary across the board.

Find a guy that will work with you and stick with him.
Even thought I only place a few orders per year the
guy I'm using at Circle remembers me once I give him
my name...

So, the lease on my '03 330i ZHP is coming to an end in July (anyone looking
for a non-sunroof ZHP?). I'm starting my shopping early as I'm looking at
getting a touring. This decision is based mainly b/c I'm a pack rat when I
go places, especially with the dog...

I like the looks of the E46 and the E39 tourings, but not so much the E90 or
E65 tourings.

Sooo, any things to look for in the E46 or E39 tourings? Unfortunately,
power will be lacking as I want a manual transmission version.

I will still have my wife's '02 M3 and the I-stock car for track fixes (not
that I won't take the wagon out once in a while...).

Thanks,

As an owner of an 01 E46 Touring, I think I can speak to this. IMO the
best part of the E46 touring is its transparancy against the sedan and
even the coupe. Aside from different spring/shock tuning, the suspensions
are identical. The wagon is slightly rear-heavy (~52%) and has the 2nd
highest torsional rigidity in the unibody compared to the rest of the
lineup. In MY00, 323i wagons (and convertibles) actually had 328/325
brakes, and starting midyear MY01, MT cars got 3.46:1 final drives shared
with all 325 ATs, both to help make up performance from the increased
weight. Incidentally, Mexico-spec 325iTs got the even larger 330 brakes.

The diff ratio makes a big difference in the sensation of power, and makes
the performance gap to the 330 (or even my M6?!?) seem (just _seem_) not
so huge. Launching from a stop, and freeway speed acceleration are where
it's most noticeable ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). I took my car to Buttonwillow for
my first track weekend this past fall, and didn't feel at much of a
disadvantage power-wise. Rolling acceleration in 2nd gear, though, is
where being down on power is really noticeable.

>From a practicality standpoint, there's no comparison. Better rear
seating, especially headroom. Better rear visibility. I've hauled: 32"
CRT TV. Loveseat. 10ft electrical conduit. 10 wheels/tires. The
separately-opening rear glass is one of my favorite features.

I can't see myself replacing this with anything other than another
touring. An E60M5 Touring would be great if I somehow had $100k to blow
on a car, but since I don't, I'm eyeing the upcoming MINI Traveler.

As for buying one, there's nothing to watch out for that's wagon-specific.
The same laundry list of E46 issues all apply. Finding a MT would be
tough for obvious reasons, though they ARE out there. BMW's CPO locator
currently shows 9 in the whole country.

I have a 00 323iT. I love the car and just IMHO they look better than the 4
door. YMMV :)
If you want to avoid the steptronic you will have to look for awhile, most
of them seem to be automatics. I can't think of any issue unique to the
wagon version really.

I agree. Even the diesel dually truck is a manual.

More is better, especially when it is power and transmission gear choices (ok,
I don't want a 12 speed manual but 6 is nice). Now, if it'd just come as a
330d for the US market...

Hmmm, restraint when ordering. That'll be new for me. However, it'll be easy
to 'just say no' to I-drive.

I'm being talked into the E90 by several folks. Of course, then I'll have to
wait until August to pick it up as I'll get it Euro delivery in time for the
Nurburgring school so it can get a proper start to life.

Thanks for the feedback!

I suggest you try on an E39 540it for size. The manual isn't quite necessary.
Just sit back and enjoy the torque.

We came close to buyign one, but opted for an Allroad to get more usable space.

Subject: <M50tu> vacuum leak
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Car is high miler '93 525iT. The vacuum leak wasn't obvious until cold
weather hit. In cold weather, the engine idles very rough such that it
will die at a stop sign if left in drive. Once thoroughly warm, or in
temps above 50F, things seem fine. However, even when idling smooth I
can hear what sounds like a leak in the area of the middle of the engine.

Pulling the dipstick or opening the oil fill cap produces no change in
idle. So it's a pretty good leak. This seems odd to me b/c I remember
before the problem how the engine would just lope if the oil fill cap
was opened; it didn't adjust to the opening. With this problem, it seems
to adjust and idles well when warm. Maybe it's something other than a
vacuum leak???

I tried spraying some carb cleaner around and under the intake runners
but nothing happened. Admittedly, I was a tad ginger about spraying that
stuff under the runners on a warm engine with no fire extinguisher or
water hose available.

Any thoughts as to what it may be or what I should look at are appreciated.
