Pretty good tire test in the December issue of Car & Driver. It's
based on testing conducted at the Tire Rack track, using their BMW 325i
tire test mules.

It will help pass the winter months, and allow for endless self-debate
as to which summer tires to buy next spring!

A reply to a recent posting on erratic running in an older model that
had a trap door AFM mentioned repositioning the pointer as an
alternative to replacing the AFM
Here's a link to a description I once wrote up about the procedure:

I noticed today that the 'one touch up' is not working on my '96 328i on the
front passenger's side. It works in one the down direction, just not up.

Anyone had similar issue and have any thoughts on the fix? Maybe just the
switch?

Thanks,

There will be a full accident report released by CR when appropriate.

It is a tragedy - but to be expected. Racing when you come down to it is
dangerous, you do your best to mitigate the risks but it ain't a walk in the
park.

Subject: loud car 3 lights & hard curve then misfires
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

** Loud car & 3 engine lights **

I've noticed over the last few weeks that my '01 330i with 76,000+
miles is getting louder, at least inside the car. Last night while
driving home on the thruway I did an experiment. I was traveling
along @ about 75 MPH and I put the car in neutral and let off the
accelerator all the way.

A few seconds after the engine reached idle, the loudness of the car
stopped. Now I know at least what area to look at. (My ears were
happy once again. On the hour plus long drive back home all my brain
could focus on was the noise of the car, turning up the music did not
help. :) ) After the noise stopped and I was enjoying the peace and
quiet three lights (battery, oil, SES) came on. I put the car back
in gear and started driving normally again, the lights went out.

I did my experiment again closer to home on a large hill and sure
enough the same lights came on again. Anyone know if this is normal?

** hard curve and the misfire **

When I take a particular exit off the expressway and take it fast
(right curve), the engine misfires when I come out of the curve.
This has happened 3 times in the last year and half. I think there
has been at least once when I thought it would misfire that it did
not. The SES light comes on, but when I restart the car, all is well
again. Until I restart the car, the misfire continues. Anyone have
any ideas what might be causing this? I've had a suggestion that it
might be something in the fuel tank that could be cutting off the
flow of fuel and it does not get out the way until the request for
fuel is removed. Any ideas?

I don't think this is a big issue as it does not happen that often.

Sorry I don't know what an SES light is

but the oil and battery light probably went on since you were at idle there
wasn't enough engine speed to drive the oil pump and alternator to provide
sufficient oil pressure and voltage respectively.

The loudness sounds like you have an exhaust problem. I bet the car is
stone quiet when it's not running.

On the misfire - full tank of gas or low gas when you get the misfire in the
curve?

The car will tell you where to look. Read the codes that are stored
in the DME when the SES light comes on. You can either get a code
reader and do it yourself, take it to the dealership or some autoparts
stores also read the codes for free.

If you want my guess it would be a camshaft position sensor, but that
is only a guess based upon the engine sounding louder and is far from
anything you would want to spend money based upon.

The OBD (On Board Diagnostic) system is there for a reason and it
usually works fairly well.

If it was so rare (only one of three in the world), why is it worth
only $125K? Not that I don't want to see it recovered, this just
seems like a bit less than the value I would have imagined.

BTW Dennis, by my calculations you still have 13.5 minutes of fame
still to come. And I didn't think your head was all that big, really.

===========

$125k is actually way above market on the car - the reporter asked me if it
was worth $150k, and I told him that it was well south of that, he said, "is
it $100k?" I said south of that a little, and somehow it became $125k in the
report - sexier, I guess!

It is one of three painted in the Tommy Hilfiger colors, but that's really
only the paint job. It's one of ~109 355 Challenge cars in the world, and
current market value is between $60k and $110k (the $110k one belongs to my
mechanic, and it's probably the nicest one in the world, and is only an
estimate).

As for the amount of fame - for the record, I got dragged into appearing in
this because the owner of the car (my friend) was driving his toterhome down
to CMP for a PCA club race this weekend and couldn't make it, and I live not
too far from the dealership. Bah - who needs the publicity? :-) Just
trying to get the word out; the more it's publicized, the harder it will be
for the thief to sell it....

vty,

Good technique. Just be careful not to get the carb cleaner on any
painted surfaces, unless you want to remove some of the paint.
