Modern A/C weighs only 40 lb or so. Even back then it should have been less
than 100.

well, I'm going off what the PO (my old man) said new weight was vs what it
scaled at... don't forget there's the A/C compressor, condenser, & plumbing...
and he nailed the list weight dead on, so I'd tend to believe him... ;)

I know this came up recently, and apologies for dragging it out again... but
after about 11 days of sitting in the garage (Tampa), I returned from a
business trip to find my battery stone dead. Interstate, two or three years
old. No signs of strain leading up to this, I'm totally surprised. I'll give
her a jump in the morning and go for a drive in an attempt to charge it
up... but I'm not sure if that'll take, or even if I should try. Should I
just replace it? After only a few years? What happened here?

New battery is in (Interstate MTP-91, about $100). What I bet is dragging
this down is the turn signal clicker in my dash cluster. It often makes a
sort of a gurgling sound, even when ignition is OFF (well heeled list members
might recall a thread from me on this several years ago). I never did get
that fixed (best I can tell, the whole cluster would need to be replaced), and
so it slowly drags my battery down (at least that's the theory).

* sigh *    I guess we're all getting old   :O/

hey gruppe...yesterday i tried using the windshield washer on my E36 M3
and nothing came out from the nozzles...i checked the fluid level,
fuses, but nothing; not even noise...the washer fluid motor was kaput...

i never noticed it before, but the motor is directly on the washer
resevoir...i saw the wires, but i always thought that was the fluid
level sensor (the sensor is adjacent to the motor)...i figured i had
nothing to lose if i go and tinker with it before i buy a new one...

shoulda took time to take pictures, but i was doing it at night, and
didnt know i'd get it to work...

the motor assembly pops out from the resevoir...there's a clamp holding
the hose on, and the wire connector snaps off...you can actually pull
the motor assembly apart...the actual motor is encased in some
plastic...a little pulling and twisting motion, and it's open...i
thought my motor was fried, cause i kept hooking it up to a low amp
voltage supply, and the breaker kept tripping...hooked it up to a higher
amp power supply, and the motor spun a little bit...

the motor just had some mineral deposits on it, so i took some pliers
and freed up the motor's armature buy giving it a few spins, lubed it
back up, and wallah...freely spinning motor...

put everything back, and it all works...

a new motor assembly is probably cheap...but thought i'd let you guys
know a quick R&R is all you need before heading out to the parts
department...

I drove a 92 e36 yesterday. 2-door non-vanos engine.
Seemed like the LR wheel bearing was shot and the engine needed
a valve adjustment. That's the way it sounded anyway. Do these have
valve adjustment? Shims perhaps? I am only familiar with M20's
internals, just picked up
a 93 e36 recently and have not bought a Bentley.
Just wondering if it's a nightmare to get into the 92's. I should
probably look at the coils on both.
Other than some slight rust in the doors, a little front air dam werk
and some
interior bits, sunroof panel/shade, speaker rings, etc. it was overall
in good condition.
Had records and such also. Figured it may make a nice track car someday
and get
rid of the e30's?

On my 93 it is using some coolant. Fill reservoir every 2 weeks. No
leaks that I can
find anywhere. Slight headgasket leak?

Thanks,

M50s have hydraulic lifters, no valve adjustment necessary.

So it has a bad lifter, wiped cam, or maybe it's the chain/tensioners I
hear?

Either way it sounds like lots of hassle. IE: change one lifter might as
well
do all, plus new cams, plus new chain and sprockets, ad infit.?

Thanks,
Chris

2001 330i with 70k milest. Service engine light keeps coming on. Fault
code reader says front "oxygen sensor out of range" (codes E3 and E4 I
think). Replaced both front oxygen sensors with new ones, yet the light
continues to come on a short distance after resetting it. Any ideas?

That code occurs when the ECU is giving max fuel correction and the
air/fuel is still out of range. Saw that a lot when dialing in the fuel
pressure for larger injectors, MAF tubes, and and manifolds.
One way to measure and verify is with an OBDII data logger like
OBDCOM. This will let you monitor fuel correction in real time to see
if that's what is happening.

Has mentioned here earlier, the battery shouldn't die after such a short
time unless there was a current drain somewhere in the car. Find the
drain, fix the problem.

(I regularly keep the race car parked, battery connected, for WEEKS at a
time. Always starts up. Just one data point.)

I would not jump this car, its too easy to overvoltage the system and possibly
damage electrical components. Make sure the battery is full above the plates
with distilled water, then slow charge it at about 2-10 amps for a couple
hours. Then try to start it without jumping - if it still doesn't have enough -
replace the battery.

Howdy, all. Quick question - which oil filter is the right one for my 1995

forget which one goes onto the 740.)

Dennnis,

All I ever use at the shop are Mahle filters if at all possible. We go
through, I dunno, a dozen a week I suppose. They do seem to be the best
to me.
