Man, I wish you could search across craiglist's cities. I'm sure there's
bargains to be had out there like this...I'm on the right coast ;)

I just love the balance of this car w/the m42 motor though. If I
consider a motor swap, I might as well buy a used e36 for that matter.
If it was an ti, I'd do a motor swap in a heartbeat as that car is
already too heavy.

maybe I'll have a roller FS soon. damn!

Subject: High pressure fuel questions (freude am frage)
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Questions:
On the new GDI (Gas Direct Injection) or FSI (Fuel Stratified Injection)
systems, what do the fuel pumps look like that can provide these types of
pressures. Are they essentially the same as the old 40-60 psi systems
before it?
How about the regulators? Are they also the same and operate under the same
principals?
I wonder what allowances are made for servicing and bleeding the pressure
if you have to replace a component in the high pressure side.
How are the injectors different? I read about a clever way that some
aftermarket tuners give the injectors (piezo) a rest period (during the
injection period) to allow them to cool. Does this imply that the fuel is
not providing the necessary cooling?

I read an article about the Mazda 3 and it indicated that fuel could be
stratified in the cylinder to such an extent that the cylinder A/R ratio
could be as high as 65 by positioning fuel next to the spark plug (which
would be closer to a 14.7:1 ratio in that region) and without pinging.

Its a mechanical pump not unlike a pressure washer pump. Lean burn,
stratified charge and HCCI are all strategies being developed, but the first
two fly in the face of our emissions requirements.

I had one more summer left in the summer tires for the 5er, or so I
thought until I pulled them out of storage and found one flat with a #8
screw throught the tread. Shoot. "Hey mr. tire guy, will you fix this
tire worn to the wear bars with a screw near the shoulder?" hmm.

Fortunately, I just got a nice glossy tire catalog from the Tire Rack.
I paged through it with interest, and now I only have one question for
the group: Should I get the tires with the lavender scent, or the ones
that make colored smoke?

When in doubt, get the tires with the biggest t*ts.

(That's Transient Turning System, of course. New feature that TireRack can
install on any tire.)

ha! but what about the old saying, "if it has tires or t*ts, you're
going to have trouble with it."

Oh well, the question was mostly academic anyhow. I got a set of
General Exclaim UHPs - we'll see if they're the cheapo bargain they're
cracked up to be. (Sorry Mark, I'll click through justracing.com next
time!)

It's the wife's car, and also a 6-cyl automatic, so there won't be tire
smoke of any color, and the lavender scented models aren't in my size.
I took Gary D's advice and made sure I got AA traction and nylon cap
plies. (and I do store them deflated)

Sometime in the future I'll post my experiences with 'em. (and also
with this "wheel shield" spray I bought to supposedly keep brake dust
from sticking to the wheels) (yes, I'm entirely too lazy to try to wax
those darn sport wheels).

Always store tires deflated. That stops oxygen in the inflation air from
being forced through the plies causing degradation of the rubber to not
rubber bonds.

If you got 72k out of the bushings, that's great. I've been getting about
30 - 40k, but with a lowered suspension. Your bushings are suspect. I was
told that if you can get *any* real motion out of the bushings they are bad.

>> I also get a quiet clunk sometimes when going over bumps at low speed -

That sounds like sway bar links. These are easy to swap and pretty cheap.
When mine were bad, the rubber was obviously torn. One test is to just
unbolt them and drive (slowly) around the block hitting a couple of bumps to
see if the sound goes away. Mine were worn enough that I just changed them
when I was doing the control arms.

Other things to check that I have seen, was the big nut (gland nut) on the
top of the front strut housing... mine had come a bit loose and it had
created an odd clunk over bumps. I had changed my shocks, so this was
suspect for me.

Here is a good list that goes over this in order of cheaper/more probable
parts: http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/trouble/front_noises.htm

I can't help you with the rotors. All I can say is that with my E34, the
only time I've had a shimmy has been because of loose bushings or a slightly
bent rim combined with worn bushings. I swapped wheels front to back and it
went away. Try that to see if it could be wheel/rim related.

That said, rotors are easy to change and pretty cheap, so if you see some
run out, I would change them.
