I don't know the specifics of the connector you have, but with most multipin
connectors the terminals snap in from the wire side. There's usually a tab
that stick out to keep the terminal from backing out. Round terminals can
be removed by sliding a properly-sized tube over the pin to depress the tab
allowing the pin/socket to be pulled back through the connector body - you
could solder the wire back in place and push the terminal back into the
connector body.

Flat terminals generally work the same way, but a thin screwdriver blade
often works to depress the tab allowing the terminal to be removed.

Don't know if this will be any help at all, but it applies to a lot of
multipin connectors.

So in addition to apparently successfully completing the head repair on the
M3 (w0000), I managed to pull out the ground wire from my ZKW headlight
connector. These are the round euro-type ones. Anybody know how to
disassemble those connectors so I can get the ground hooked back up?

Thanks.

In my older cars (e30s) I use Redline MTL. For your car, to my knowledge
Mobil 1 ATF is just fine. I like Redline products, but they are harder
to come by...

D4 ATF is recommended for the E36 trans.

Chris,
I used MTL in a previous e36 (my SC'd 318ti) and was not happy with it. In
cold weather I felt like I had to bend the shift lever to get it into 1st
gear....
I switched to Redline D4 ATF (the original fluid was BMW specified as ATF) and
all was well again. Since then I've used Redline D4 ATF in my M3 as well (also
specified as ATF from BMW) and been very happy with it.
Cheers,
Chet Dawes

The best fluid I have used in my 95 M3 is Royal Purple SyncroMax. I have a
lazy 2nd gear syncro...the RP really helps out. It was a noticeable
improvement over the Redline D4 I had been using.

I have an E46 328Ci, and also like Royal Purple better than Redline.
Redline felt crunchy after a couple thousand miles. Not sure if Rob has
RP, but I got mine from Summit Racing.

If you can't remove the barrel as someone stated. (I have used straight
pins before)
Rob sells the demon eyes so he may sell the proper connector if you need
a new one.

Also: http://www.winzerusa.com sells the barrels, extractors, etc. So if
you find a rep in your
area you could probably get hooked up. They also sell injector
connectors and such
hard to find items. Good stuff.

Thanks,
Chris

Upon further inspection, there appears to be a set of "dogs/ears"
arranged radially that could be rotated maybe 45 degrees. However,
trying to do that with a screwdriver only winds up bending the plastic,
not rotating the ears.

I'll also see if I can find a tube that will fit in the hole around the
pin to release it.

A quick Google and a look at Winzer's site yields no info about locak
distributors. I'll dig more.

Thanks!

Boy, I would have never believed that the relay would be a PCB type.
Good luck sourcing that relay. Maybe Mouser can locate one for you?
They located some laptop fans for me a couple years back.
I guess worst case you change the cluster.
Did you take any photos?

Enough of that. Dove into the cluster today. It doesn't come apart
easily...
the gauges separate from the electronics with a good tug, but the
electronics are cased in a plastic shell not intended to be taken apart
(plastic tabs fused together during manufacturing). Broke everything
apart with a diagonal cutter. The clicker in question is a Siemens
relay, V23072-C1052-X116.
Upper-right corner of the PCB (above the temp gauge). All it does is
click, doesn't control anything. Suck away the sodder, pop it out, no
more bzzztBAP.

Thanks Rex, exactly what I was looking for.
Too bad none of the photos from the headliner removal page show up:

I've got a 3 spoke steering E36 steering wheel for sale. Anyone know if
it's a direct swap into a normal E36 - any associated "gotchas" when it
comes to the SRS?

Thanks.

These are terrible-looking, don't fit at all, and usually smell awful. I
would be glad to dispose of it for you in an ecologically sound and
terrorist-free environment. Feel free to take whatever large tax deduction
all you racer types are used to.
