I'm looking for a light but sturdy monopod to carry on my backpack when

Stefan,

I have gone through a few. I settled on the Bogen/Manfrotto 3018/618
with 3232 swivel head. You do not need a ball head or anything fancy on
the monopod, the 3232 works perfectly for the monopod and has a quick
release. This combination is perfect. The 3016 is also a good choice.
