Yes, you are right, if the machine knows something is wrong (out of ink or bad printhead), it will flash at you, but if it doesn't know (for whatever reason), then you need to run the utility. The utility will let you do some image quality checks and tests, but it also has a "troubleshooting" option that takes you online for some other tests that will reveal a bad printhead or whatever. I'm at home and can't look at the s/w, but yes, you do need to install the utility, even if you're not using the driver.
