Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope your weekend was good.

And if Monday isn’t bad enough, I read this morning in the paper that a third
of all employers think that employees aged fifty and above are on the scrap
heap. So that’s depressing news for us to start the week! And I don’t know if
any teachers sign up for the Levy Letter, I’m sure they’re far too sensible to
sign up for this, but teachers have a laugh at school and that’s no joke!
According to a new in-depth report, which is out this morning – staff enjoy
their job so much that they laugh out loud on average every nine minutes
according to the study. It’s very hard to believe, it has to be said. Anyway if
any teachers have been signed up for the Levy Letter then do please get in
touch.

I’ll tell you what we’re also looking for this morning. We’re going to be
making a couple of films in the near future for Look North on the subject of
the police, possibly on Humberside merging with North Yorkshire. If you’re a
serving police officer and would like to take part in our little film, then do
get in touch. And also as far as Birdseye is concerned, are there any staff
members or employees of Birdseye who would like to get in touch with us as
well. Get in touch with me as soon as possible. Of if you know of somebody who
works at Birdseye and would like to take part in a film, then contact me in the
usual way at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tonight at 6.30pm

Join me tonight for all the day’s news and Lisa Gallagher will have the weather
forecast. And also we shall be talking to the comedian Lee Evans who’s coming
to the Sheffield Arena on the 7th October!

Salt

I see that families are turning their back on salt after the constant warnings
of its danger. Now they’re using more herbs and pepper to flavour their foods.
As a result, sales of salt have fallen by 13% over the last 5 years. The
decline follows campaigns by the Food Standards Agency linking salt to high
blood pressure and strokes. I have to say that I’m not one of that 13% having
always enjoyed a lot of salt on my food. But anyway, that’s not P.C. these
days. Table salt was the worst affected - sales down by 15% in the last two
years. In contrast, pepper sales have risen 55% over the last five years!

Leave it to Levy

Don’t forget if you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we may be able
to tackle on the programme then do get in touch. Give me the details and of
course your telephone number. We need details like, what the story is, what the
problem is and what we can do about it. Drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bridget Jones

I see that millions of women, now in their twenties, face lives of loneliness
as they enter middle age. They were told yesterday that one in three will not
be in a marriage or have a male partner by the time they hit their mid-forties,
a government forecast said. Can you believe this! 1 in 5 will never have
married and many will face middle age and old age with neither a partner, nor
children or family to support them. The projections of a bleak future for many
women in the Bridget Jones generation were published by the National Office of
Statistics. That’s incredible, isn’t it, to think how things have changed? So
there you are, it says that 20% of woman aged between 45 – 50 in 2031 will
never have married and will have no partner.

And also on the subject of age, continued improvements of life expectancy mean
that women currently aged 65 can look forward to celebrating their 89th
birthday. Men of the same age on average will reach their 86th birthday. The
figures are good news for individuals, but will place enormous pressure on the
nation’s pension systems which are already groaning of course under the burden
of the ageing population. So there you are, today’s women of sixty-five can
expect to live until eighty-nine. We are all living longer, or maybe it just
seems longer!

Photographs

Don’t forget keep your photos coming in for the Big Screen. If you’ve got a
photo that you’re particularly proud of and you think we could use it on the
programme then send it in to the usual address – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm and have a good day until then!

Bye for now.

Peter
