Hello there, welcome to the start of another week of the Levy Letter and I hope
you had a good weekend, whatever you were up to.
This morning, as I write this, bright and early… well it’s not really bright
and early, it’s grey and early at Victoria Dock. It’s always quite good, isn’t
it, to know that when you have to go back to work on a Monday, it’s grey and
miserable after the weekend was so beautiful. The other great thing about this
time of the year, if you live anywhere near the water, is the extremes of the
tide. This morning it’s really high and I noticed this yesterday, it was a
really low tide. Anyway I digress. I hope your weekend was good whatever you
were up to.

Stepping Out

I had a drive to Lincoln on Saturday to see the play Stepping Out at the
Theatre Royal. Over the last few weeks, I’ve interviewed quite a few members of
the cast, Anita Harris - I remember her from the sixties, still going strong –
a remarkable lady. She’s in it and also Vicki Michelle from ‘Allo Allo’ and
also the lovely Sue Hodge. Excellent play and the Theatre Royal was full to the
rafters on Saturday night, so if you went, I hope you enjoyed it.

Tonight

I hope you will join me tonight for Look North as usual. As well as the day’s
news, tonight I shall be talking antiques. The presenter of Bargain Hunt will
be joining me on the programme. By the way this week, Bargain Hunt live is
coming from a different location and today it’s coming from Grantham and we’ll
be talking about that a little later on. And by the way the programme, the
Antiques Roadshow, which was recorded at Normanby Hall with Michael Aspel back
in June will be on any day now. And talking of television programmes, Friday of
this week at 8.30pm there will be a programme called Outtake TV with Anne
Robinson and there’s a quick snatch from Look North on this Friday’s programme,
if you want to make a note of that – this Friday night, BBC One at 8.30pm.

Thanks

Thanks very much for all your emails over the past week. There’s been plenty of
them! Lots on the subject of situation comedy as well, after I mentioned last
week about remakes of TV comedies after listeners, well readers of the Radio
Times, suggested the comedy they would like to see remade is Fawlty Towers.
People have written in to say it would be a terrible mistake, which of course
it would be. But thank you for all the emails on that and of course and indeed
on all the other subjects. And on suggesting guests - I had numerous
suggestions, still Bryan Ferry comes out on top. I will try and get Bryan on
the programme if I can. But thank you for all the suggestions. If you want to
drop me a line as usual, my direct email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Let me
know your suggestions for who you’d like to see on the sofa, or indeed anything
else, I’d like to hear from you.

DIY

I was interested to read this morning, that one of the largest chains of DIY
shops in the country is shutting down 22 of its large warehouse stores as
apparently we’re getting disenchanted with tackling jobs around the house
ourselves and are thinking now that they are better left to the tradesmen – I
have to say I’ve always left them to the tradesmen, being myself completely
useless at DIY! But sales fell over the last six months with this particular
chain and they warn that the situation is continuing to go downhill. There’s a
bit of a backlash against DIY and home makeovers. It’s believed that women who
take on many of the DIY tasks have been put off and also the demise of the
BBC’s Changing Rooms and similar TV shows which enthused millions to take up
paintbrushes and drills is also to blame – let’s blame the BBC, oh sorry let’s
blame television!!

Texting

I have seen that we’ve been sending more texts than ever before. It does make
you wonder how we managed before there were mobile phones and before we could
text. I remember the first time I worked out how I could send a text, and it
doesn’t seem that long ago and now we send millions of them every year. Even
the Queen has got on to the band wagon by sending Harry a text for his birthday!

LL

Don’t forget if there’s someone you know who would appreciate a daily email
from me, get them to sign up for their daily Levy Letter. As ever all you need
to do is go to one of the two addresses at the bottom of the screen and just
sign up. If you want to tell friends and family about that, then that’s
excellent! Thank you very much.

Blood Brothers

I mentioned a moment ago about going to the theatre on Saturday night to see
Stepping Out and tonight is the night that Blood Brothers opens at the New
Theatre in Hull. It’s one of the biggest musicals still running in the West End
– it’s been on for 18 years! A variety of people have played the lead role of
Mrs Johnstone, including Kiki Dee and Barbara Dickson. Well tonight the show
opens in Hull, and when we had the competition in the Levy Letter a couple of
weeks ago to win tickets, there was a huge response. On stage tonight playing
the part of Mrs Johnstone is Linda Nolan, so if you’re going this week then do
enjoy. Hopefully later in the week, I’ll be going backstage to see some of the
new refurbishments in the theatre while it’s been closed through the summer and
have a look round, but more on that later in the week.

Caught Out

I always remember a few years back now, when I was doing a little television
programme behind a desk with one other person, when the music was playing after
we said goodnight and I turned around to the person I was with and said
something like, that didn’t go too well did it, or words to that effect. And I
always remember someone pointing out to me that you should never really say
that even though the microphone’s closed because there’s always somebody who
can lip read watching the TV and you don’t want to be caught out! So I had to
laugh, my word it’s had some coverage this last day or two - a scrawled note
that President George Bush passed to Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice at
the United Nation’s summit and he’d scribbled on a bit of paper… ‘I think I may
need a bathroom break, is that possible?’ But some paparazzi with a very sharp
expensive lens managed to pick this up. As you’ve probably seen by now it’s
made all the papers. Talk about being caught out! It’s a les!
son to us all. Any more stories about being caught out in your particular job
or work then do let us know. I’ve got a friend who’s a doctor and I think
doctors have their own language, although I can’t give you an example right
now, but they certainly have their own terminology I think.

Car Sticker

Every couple of weeks or so, I like to remind you about the Look North car
stickers. They are quite snazzy! And every time I see one of them in a car, it
reminds me, I’ve just seen another one just last night when I was driving
through the centre of Hull. If you’d like your own Look North car sticker then
send a reasonably large stamped self-addressed envelope to the usual address,
BBC Look North, Queen’s Court, Queen’s Gardens, Hull, HU1 3RH. And I’ll send
you one off. If you’ve not got your car sticker then I’ll send you one.

Well that’s it for today. I’d better get on with some work. Join me tonight if
you can - 6.30pm BBC One for all the day’s news. Paul will be with me with the
weather as ever. And as I said we’ll be going behind the scenes of the TV show
Bargain Hunt. I’ll see you at 6.30pm….
Bye for now!

Peter
