Hello and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is going well and
that you’re looking forward to the weekend. If you’ve got something planned or
organised then I hope it goes very well indeed. Not sure what the forecast is,
but Paul will have that of course on the programme at 6.30pm.

Now I was reading this morning that the book makers have slashed the odds on
temperatures plunging to record lows as Britain braces itself for the coldest
ever winter. One book makers have almost halved its odds to 12:1 on readings
falling below the record of, can you believe this, minus 27.2 degrees Celsius!
The Big Freeze could leave thousands of households across the country with
power cuts. Gas and electricity suppliers are preparing for a prolonged cold
spell and it’s going to be in December and January. Well, after a succession of
mild winters then that’s going to be quite a shock to the system. But I’ll ask
Paul about that one tonight.

Also on the show tonight, the comedy legend Frank Carson. I’ll be talking to
him ahead of his appearance in Gainsborough. So join us tonight, at the usual
time, 6.30pm BBC1.

Etiquette

Now something for the female Levy Letter readers. There’s a new guide been
published about etiquette. Forget the old days, where you had to worry about
wearing a hat and gloves and knowing which fork to use, all of which in the old
days identified a lady. Well now it’s all completely different. Well, here are
some of the modern manners for women. Some of the things you don’t do – don’t
quibble over restaurant bills, do offer to pay more if you’re ordering the most
expensive thing on the menu, don’t shout into your mobile phone, don’t sign off
an email with a first name and a kiss unless you know the person very well,
text instead of talking particularly if the call is related to work, and don’t
kiss anyone on the lips unless they are your partner/husband, and do not
discuss your sex life with other girls. There are some of the don’ts, but let’s
have some of the dos then – Ignore your mobile phone if it rings whilst you’re
being served by a shop assistant, keep your ipod turn!
ed down on the train (not everyone shares your taste in music), remember to
include your ex-boyfriend’s wife if inviting him to your wedding, do air kiss
when wearing lipstick and always remember to reply to invitations. There you
are, some of the new modern etiquette guides for women!

Insomnia

A little bit self-indulgent of me this, because this is something close to my
heart, but I was interested to read this morning in the paper that eating
chilli could help you to sleep. It will come as a surprise to anyone who has
been troubled by a sleepless night after eating a curry, but a study has found
that spicy food can help you sleep better and will also leave you feeling more
awake the next day. Researchers in Australia have discovered that a group of
volunteers fell asleep more easily when they ate food rich in chillies. They
also said they woke up better and seemed to have a bit more energy during the
day. So there you are, something else for me to try. As a regular insomniac,
all I’ve got to do now is to eat chilli and curries before going to bed.

Latest Gadget

Well, everyone is talking about ipods at the moment, but very soon the latest
gadget is going to be the visual ipod. It’s the same size, but with a little
screen on it, so you’ll be able to play videos and home movies and eventually
television shows will be downloadable from the computer as well. Owners in
Britain will be able to download television programmes in the near future, but
can access more than two thousand music videos now. The screen is only two
inches by one inch and it displays 260 000 different colours. Can you believe
that! Anyway, this is the new ipod, the visual ipod and it’s only tiny, just
four inches by two inches and the thickness is 0.55 of an inch! You wouldn’t
think it was possible would you? But that’s the latest gadget, the visual ipod,
which will be on sale in the not too distant future.

Photographs

Don’t forget to keep the pictures and photographs coming in, the scenic views,
nice pictures. It doesn’t matter how arty they are! All for the Big Screen. We
show one every night on the programme and we give the sender of course a
mention on the programme. Particularly looking for some more pictures from the
south of the region, Lincolnshire, South Lincolnshire, that sort of area, and
of course North Norfolk. So if anyone is reading in that area and you’ve got a
good picture then send it in. The usual address, if you want to get me direct,
is [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also if you’ve got any problems you’d like me to help
with, then also email me at that address.

Grannies

Well, they’ve traditionally been pictured as grey-haired and homely, sitting
and tutting at the excesses of the world, but grandmothers today are far more
likely to be glamorous, active and making the most out of life, a new survey
shows. Rather than being shocked by the lifestyles of groovy grannies, and when
we say groovy grannies we’re talking about people like Gloria Hunniford, Joan
Collins, Cilla Black to name but three. Well the modern Gran feels twenty years
younger than her age, dresses stylishly, putting colour in her hair and enjoys
socialising. She’s likely to travel all over the world and insists that an
active sex life is important. In fact the typical Granny of today says that old
age does not start until at least eighty according to the survey. Well the
research has shown that pensioners are living in a golden age of freedom,
health and wealth compared to that of their grandparents and their life
expectancy is eighty-eight instead of seventy-one from two gener!
ations ago. More than four in five say they enjoy good health. I think that’s
very true when I think about my own late grandmother - grandma, bless her.
Things are completely different today it has to be said. Anyway, any views on
that or indeed anything else we’ve put in the Levy Letter, then let me know.

Birthdays

Don’t forget if you’ve got a birthday coming up and you want a mention in the
Levy Letter, we’ve had a lot of them in the last few days, then of course just
drop me a line and let me know and of course if you’ve got any other
suggestions for guests and topics to go on the programme. If you’ve got any
interesting video footage or any photographs of things that have happened,
particularly over the weekend, of anything you think we should know about, then
get in touch with me at the usual address, or if it’s urgent you can always
ring us at the BBC, our main reception number is 01482 323232.

Well, that’s it from me for today. Have a great weekend and join me tonight at
6.30pm on BBC1. And look out for your next Levy Letter on Monday.

Bye
Peter
