Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your
weekend was good. Whatever you were up to then I hope it went well. The start
of another week together. I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight and every
night on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

This evening, as well as all the day’s news, Lisa will have the weather
forecast. Amongst our guests this week, we’ll be talking to Sir Bernard Ingham
tomorrow on the programme. Grantham’s most famous daughter, Baroness Thatcher
celebrates her 80th birthday on Thursday this week. There is a party – the
Queen and the Prime Minister will be among those to pay tribute to the former
Prime Minister. There are many other people on the guest list including Shirley
Bassey and Sir Tim Rice and also Lord Lloyd Webber. Well, tomorrow I shall be
talking to Sir Bernard Ingham, former press secretary to Margaret Thatcher
ahead of her 80th birthday, and also on the day that Sir Bernard Ingham visits
Grimsby. Sir Bernard will be on the programme tomorrow, but in the meantime
join me tonight at the usual time, BBC1 6.30pm.

Art

I know precious little about painting and art. In fact you could write all my
knowledge of art on a postcard. The only thing I do know about is David
Hockney, of course a Yorkshire man. David now lives in Los Angeles, but all his
work is hanging in a gallery, a former mill in Bradford - Salts Mill at
Saltaire. It’s a beautiful place, if you’ve ever been to West Yorkshire. If
you’ve been then you’ll know what I’m talking about. If not, then it’s well
worth a visit to Salt Mill.

I was reading in the paper that David, whose sister of course lives in
Bridlington, says he wants to paint England. He says in an interview with the
Sunday Times – “Yorkshire is so peaceful. East Yorkshire is like California.”
That’s what he says! “East Yorkshire is like California – you get big skies
with amazing light. Most people think that East Yorkshire just seems rather
plain, but look closer and you’ll see very beautiful forms.” I think the one
thing about the sky here is that it’s just sensational. I think it’s because of
the lack of buildings. Just looking across the river here to the other side of
the water is proof of that. Anyway, David Hockney speaking up for East
Yorkshire. He says it’s just like California.

If you do get to West Yorkshire anytime, the Gallery at Salts Mill at Saltaire
is well worth a visit.

Countdown

As you know, back in the summer, there was the sad sad news of the death of
Richard Whiteley. Richard was a lovely man, and a good friend and he died in
June of this year. Well, there was much talk after Richard’s untimely death as
to whether Countdown would continue or not. It’s been a hugely popular
programme for years and years and has been made in Yorkshire since the start of
Channel 4. Well after many rumours, the new host is going to be the smooth
talking sports star Des Lynam. Des is about to record some more episodes of
Countdown in a couple of week’s time and then the programme will be back in
November. So all the best to Des Lynam and I can see that there is a longer
waiting list for tickets to go and see Countdown recorded than any other
programme and also a longer waiting list than to see the big hit shows like The
Producers and Mary Poppins in London. It’s also half a year longer than the
waiting list for the new Aston Martin Vantage V8 car and outstrips Harvey !
Nichols’ three month queue for the new Chloe Paddington handbag!

Birthdays

A good email here that comes from Barbara Pullen. She says, “Would you please
include in your Monday’s Levy Letter a very happy birthday to Veronica Firth
and also Cheryl Lyons. They both work in the legal section typing pool and look
forward to your letter every day. If I were to be honest it gives us something
to look forward to at the end of the day. Please try and include them on
Monday.” Barbara – thank you for the note and happy birthday to Veronica Firth
and also Cheryl Lyons.

Write

Don’t forget to get in touch if you’ve got a birthday coming up and you want a
mention in the Levy Letter, or if you’ve got a story that you think we’d be
interested in doing something on Look North, or if you’ve got a problem that we
may be able to tackle on the programme in Leave it to Levy. Then send me the
details. If you want to write to me then it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED] And don’t
forget to keep your photographs coming in of views of the area for the Big
Screen in the evening. It’s the same address, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Jungle Book

Last week, we had our competition to win some tickets to go and see Jungle
Book. Well, it wasn’t just to win tickets to see the opening night, but also to
meet the cast as well. All you had to do was to name the author of the classic
book. Well the answer of course was Rudyard Kipling. The winners are Brian
Clark from Barton upon Humber and Marie Naylor from Cottingham. So well done to
Brian and to Marie.

Well that’s all from me for today. Join me for the programme tonight at BBC1 at
6.30pm and look out for another Levy Letter tomorrow!

Take care, bye for now.

Peter
