Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well!

Join me tonight for all the day’s news, including a story on the award winning
toilets in Scunthorpe, can you believe it! Also tonight, I’ll be talking to the
very talented singer and songwriter Lucie Silvas. Lucie has previously penned
hits for Liberty X, Gareth Gates and Michelle McManus, but is now being
recognised for her own singing talents. She’s tipped to be the next big success
story and we’ll be talking to her tonight on the programme, so join me then!

Paternity Leave

I read in the paper that new fathers are to be handed a legal right to six
months paternity leave in Labour’s latest round of radical childcare reforms.
The ministers apparently hope that the move with help break the culture of men
working through their children’s early lives, but the plan is expected to be
unveiled this week and has upset many business groups and those who run
industry. I was interested to read as well in the paper that in comparison with
places abroad, as far as parental leave is concerned, there are great
differences. For example, in Australia there is no maternity pay, there’s no
paternity pay and the leave is just one year and that is unpaid. So there’s
quite a difference abroad on the subject of parental leave.

Countdown

I mentioned in the Levy Letter a couple of days back that after the sad death
of Richard Whiteley, Des Lynam is to take over in the hot seat as Countdown
host. He’s starting next week and I think it’ll be on the telly about four
weeks later. I also read today that Paul O’Grady was actually offered it first
of all. The Scouse comedian and chat show host also known as Lily Savage
revealed that he turned down the job presenting Countdown. He said he was
approached to replace Richard Whiteley, but shunned the chance of working with
Carol Vordeman, because he feared his lack of education would let him down.
Paul O’Grady said, “To be honest I would have been bored stiff. I’m far too
thick to host a show like Countdown. I don’t know a consonant from a conundrum!”

Wizard of Oz

I just wanted to give a quick mention to The Northern Theatre company and their
production of The Wizard of Oz. I was stopped by a very nice young lady on
Saturday in Princes Quay shopping centre who was giving out leaflets and also
sweets promoting Northern Theatre’s recent production. The Wizard of Oz of
course has some great songs in it. The timeless classic first reached our
screens in 1939 and has been enjoyed by subsequent generations on TV and video.
Well, if you want to go and see the Northern Theatre production, then it is on
between the 1 – 5 of November.

Gyms

I can see as well from the paper this morning that you can forget pricey gyms
and exercise classes. Apparently a brisk, daily, twenty minute walk
significantly lowers your risk of heart disease say the doctors. Now, this
contradicts previous claims that you need to exercise for 30 – 45 minutes to
feel the benefits. So all you need to do is to have a 20 minute walk…so really
from Victoria Dock to the centre of Hull will do it! Do that once a day and
that’s good enough! The health message is that you only have to walk briskly
for twelve miles a week.

Get In Touch

Don’t forget if you’ve got a problem that you’d like me to take on in Leave it
to Levy or if you want to drop me a line on any subject, including as well
birthdays in the Levy Letter (a few of those have come in, in the last few
days) then if you want to write to me direct it’s [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That’s all from me for today. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday and join me
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Look out for your Levy Letter again tomorrow. Thanks
for reading and have a good day!

Bye
Peter
