Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight, BBC1 at 6.30pm as
usual.

If you’re a fan of the League of Gentlemen, then one of the stars from the
League of Gentlemen will be on the programme with us today. As well as all the
day’s news, we’ll also be returning to our Grantham hospital story. That’s
6.30pm as usual!

Odds and Ends

Now a few things, which have been mentioned in the Levy Letter over the last
couple of days, which need tying up. Thanks very much by the way for all the
emails. This one from Martin Storey on the subject of Christmas decorations. I
was saying yesterday that some of them are up already in Leeds and someone was
complaining about them. Martin says, “While I’m ranting about it, I feel the
need to decorate the outside of their house, I wish these people would wait
until December and then take them down by twelfth night. There was a house in
Beeford that had decorations on the outside well into the summer this year and
one house on St George’s Road put their lights up in mid-October. In fact
there’s even a pizza takeaway on Princes Avenue that won’t need to put their
lights up this Christmas as they’re still up from last year!” That’s from
Martin Storey.

And this one from Lesley Headley. I was talking about Les Miserables in
yesterday’s letter. On the subject of Les Mis – “I used to run the official Les
Mis fan club and I’ve seen the show (can you believe this!) 565 times in
London, Paris, Edinburgh and Manchester, which ain’t too bad! It’s my all time
favourite show, along with Blood Brothers and Phantom. Actually, we camped
outside Her Majesty’s Theatre over a weekend to see the last performance of
Peter Karrie as the Phantom some years ago with friends. We had an early wake
up call the next morning when some lads threw some money into our sleeping bags
as they thought we were down and outs!” What a great story, and thanks to
Lesley, she’s seen Les Mis 565 times! Can you believe that? It’s got to be a
record.

Mood Foods

I see that the food we eat can betray the way we feel. Eating steak is a symbol
of pent up anger, gorging on crisps means you’re stressed and filling up on
cakes is a sure fire sign that you’re sexually frustrated. So do you like
cakes? Well when it comes to betraying your mood, it seems what you eat gives a
lot away. There’s some more examples here. Spaghetti Bolognese – you’re feeling
angry and lonely, Trifle – you’re going through a personal crisis, such as a
relationship breakdown and need a little comfort. (No great surprises there!)
Rice Pudding – it’s for those who are feeling sad and lonely. There’s nothing
here for happy people is there? Apple pie and custard – feeling sad and in need
of some home comforts, and Baked Alaska, (I love Baked Alaska) for anyone
feeling depressed and needy. There you go, that’s the on the subject of mood
foods!

DIY Fertility

I see that a new kit has come out, a new DIY kit that will test your chances of
having a baby. It’ll be available in chemists at the start of next year. It
sells at £79.99 and is a his and hers pack. And it could help thousands of
would-be parents by offering them an early warning of fertility problems. Women
will be able to discover if they’re likely to be able to have children within
thirty minutes of conducting the test. Men have to wait seventy-five minutes.
That’s the new DIY fertility test that is going on sale, which I’m sure will
help many couples from next year.

Pictures

Thanks very much for all the pictures that are still coming in. If you’ve got a
picture or photograph of a regional view that you think would look good on the
programme then send it in. Also if you want to drop me a line about anything
else, you can get me direct at [EMAIL PROTECTED] I look forward to hearing from
you!

Walking or Email

The email revolution is taking a drastic toll on office workers’ health
according to experts. Instead of walking to colleagues’ desks to pass on
information, many prefer to send a computer message. I think we’re all guilty
of that here at the BBC! This means that crucial physical activity is lost
making staff even more inactive and unhealthy. So I’m certainly guilty of that.
This means that desk-bound workers tend to exercise far less than the
recommended forty minutes a day. Although, having said that, I think I’m the
only person in this office, who doesn’t actually belong to a gym, which makes
me somewhat of a social outcast!

Leave it to Levy

Don’t forget if you’ve got a problem or issue that you think we may be able to
tackle on the programme and get someone onto the programme to answer some of
those questions you have, then do let me know! Drop me a line and we’ll see
what we can do.

Magpie

There can’t be many people in this country, especially in the North of England,
who don’t know the Magpie. It’s such a famous fish and chip café on the harbour
front at Whitby and it’s made the national news at the moment, because it’s
saying that the Magpie café, which has been lauded by film director, and
restaurant critic, Michael Winner, and also the tv chef Rick Stein. It’s so
popular that there are frequently queues of more than a hundred people
stretching from the front door down the ten steps outside onto the long and
narrow pavement in Whitby. Now the owner could face legal obstruction for
obstructing the highways after neighbouring traders complained to North
Yorkshire County Council. Can you believe that! It’ll be a sad day if there’s
no longer a queue outside the Magpie café. Have you been?

Smokie

We’ve now got another exclusive Levy Letter competition for you to win a pair
of tickets to see Smokie perform this Thursday at Grimsby Auditorium. All you
have to do is answer this question – simply name one of their many hits. Send
your answer to me at the usual address, [EMAIL PROTECTED] And those tickets
could be yours!

That’s it from me for today. Have a very good day and look out for your Levy
Letter tomorrow.

Take care

Peter
