Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day’s
going well and I hope you can join me tonight for all the day’s news on BBC1 at
6.30pm.

Tonight, we’ll see on the programme the third and final instalment of our
exclusive undercover report on the illegal gangmasters of Lincolnshire. Through
the eyes of our guide, Gennaro, a worker from Portugal, we’ve previously shown
you the illegal gangmasters who abuse and exploit migrant workers. Tonight,
we’ll show you how shockingly easy it is to buy a false identity with forged
passports and fake driving licences. Our rural affairs correspondent, Guy Lynn,
will show us the third and final part of these shocking scams in Lincolnshire.
So don’t miss the programme tonight.

Also on the programme, our guest will be the legendary comedienne Joan Rivers.
And talking of celebrities, I see that according to a new survey which has just
come out, the celebrity’s identity, which we’d most like to steal for a week is
Jamie Oliver. Apparently, he’s the person we’d most like to be. It’s Jamie’s
success in the kitchen that we most admire about his identity rather than his
bank balance. And perhaps more surprisingly it was revealed that British women
desired Jamie’s domestic abilities rather than Angelina Jolie’s envied good
looks!

Weather

You can’t escape the headlines, yet again, about the fact that the winter is
going to be so awful. “Life in the Freezer”, “Fears of Death”, “Travel Chaos”,
“Power Cuts” as the Met Office forecast the coldest winter for a decade. I’ll
have to ask his Lordship about this a little later on. But the severe winter
has been predicted using a technique called North Atlantic Oscillation or NAO.
Now then, the NAO observes fluctuating atmospheric pressure over the ocean,
which has a profound impact on our weather over Europe. Well this winter, the
Met Office are anticipating a negative NAO, meaning the weakened high pressure
over the ocean and weakened low pressure over Iceland is likely to lead to
winds coming in from the East. Well, that’s what they say, but the man in the
know of course is Paul Hudson and I’ll be asking him about it a little bit
later on. But if these stories are to be believed, it’s going to be the most
atrocious winter we’ve had for years and years, but we’ll hav!
 e to wait and see.

Shopping

I don’t know what you’ve got planned for Saturday, well if you’re going to do a
bit of shopping, now is the time to do it! High street shoppers are cashing in
on rock bottom prices for an early Christmas. Chain stores have embarked on a
fresh wave of heavy discounts to get rid of old stock ahead of the crucial
festive period. If you’re thinking of shopping at the moment, well clothing is
around 4.4% cheaper than last summer, although prices have dropped a staggering
41% since 1996 according to the latest figures. The cost of footwear,
electrical equipment, ranging from televisions to cameras and homewear has also
been driven down and with no let up for struggling retailers, shoppers can
expect their money to go even further when it comes to buying Christmas
presents. Now is the time to go shopping, the sales are on and the prices have
never been so low for years. So good news for all those shoppers out there!

Waiters

I suppose we’ve all done it, where you give a little bit of a hard time to a
waiter or waitress in a restaurant and then of course afterwards you regret it
because you know you’re not going to get the service you got before. I see that
clicking your fingers in a restaurant won’t get you speedier service, but will
simply identify you as one of the diners that waiters and other diners love to
hate. Snapping your fingers has been voted the worst faux-pas that can be
committed in a restaurant. Quibbling over the bill at the end of the meal and
arguing with your dining companion make up the top three! Smoking at the table,
mis-pronouncing items on the menu (that’s me!) and starting to eat before other
people’s meals have arrived were also regarded as no-no’s in the survey for
Olive, a BBC food and drink magazine. So there you are, think about your
etiquette next time you’re dining out. I don’t think I’ve ever clicked my
fingers at a waiter or waitress and I don’t think I’ve quibb!
led over a bill, but certainly arguing with a dining companion, I’ve done
that and of course I’ve certainly mis-pronounced items on the menu.

Photographs

Just the usual little reminder about keeping the photographs coming in for the
Big Screen. There have been some interesting ones arriving this morning, so
keep them coming in. If you think you’ve got a picture which is unusual and it
doesn’t matter what the picture is of as long as it’s from the region then send
your photos in. And of course we’ll be having another picture on the Big Screen
tonight. The usual address to send the photos to is direct to me at [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Miami

As you know we get quite a few emails from abroad; from people who watch the
programme both on satellite and sometimes a little bit later on the internet.
There’s a note here from Roberto, it says, “To Look North, As an overseas
viewer of Look North, I like the way the news is presented. In fact I am
listening to you in order to maintain a sense of calm due to Hurricane Wilma.
My daughter Veronica will become ten years old this Sunday the 23rd October.
Maybe you might like to give her a mention.” So let’s give a mention to
Veronica and wish her a happy tenth birthday for Sunday! And thanks to Roberto
for the email, who watches the programme over there in Miami, who at the moment
is looking for a sense of calm due to Hurricane Wilma!

Cats

If your cat starts wheezing and coughing well there could be every chance that
your cat could have developed an allergy to you! Can you believe that?? The
animal, so often blamed for triggering allergies in their owners, can suffer
similar problems. Vets believe that human dandruff, dusty houses and cigarette
smoke can all contribute to the family cat developing breathing problems. About
one in two hundred cats suffer from asthma compared with one in twelve adults.
The cat form has the same symptoms of coughing, wheezing and breathlessness as
the human condition. So there you go, it’s not just the cats that make us
sneeze and wheeze, but we can affect the cats as well!

Write

If you want to drop me a line at any time, of course you can get me direct on
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] And also just a reminder, if you know of anyone who
is not signed up to receive their daily Levy Letter and they would like one,

click on Levy Letter, follow the instructions through and then from tomorrow
they should receive their daily email from me.

Well that’s it from me. Have a very good Thursday. Look after yourself. Join me
tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm and look out for tomorrow’s Levy Letter.
