Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and that you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.
We’ll have all the day’s news, we’ll be talking about the police and also, I
mentioned in the Levy Letter a few weeks ago that Des Lynam is to take over
Countdown from Richard Whiteley. Well, the man himself will be joining us on
the programme. Des Lynam will be joining us at 6.30pm tonight!

Letters

Let me just look at some of the emails in today. “Dear Peter, I look forward to
receiving your Levy Letter each day. I’d like you to wish my daughter, Lynne, a
very happy 50th birthday on the 27th next Thursday. She lives in Newport in
Shropshire and as I don’t see her very often, I’d like her to know that we’re
thinking of her.” And that comes from J. Fowles. So thank you very much for
that. And of course Lynne gets the Levy Letter every day, so Lynne – happy
birthday and a happy 50th! I know how you feel!! Have a very lovely day.

“Peter, we enjoy the show every night, but just a suggestion for a guest on the
sofa – Michael Buble, who will be at the Sheffield Arena in November. My wife
and I went to see him last year and he was great.” That comes from Barry
Worsnop. Barry, thank you very much indeed and we’ll see what we can do as far
as Michael Buble is concerned.

Also, “It’s my birthday today on the 27th!” This comes from Edna Turner from
Barton-upon-Humber. “It’s my birthday and it would really make my day if you
could give me a mention. I will be 61! We watch every night!” Edna, thank you
for that and a very happy birthday! Thanks for signing up for the Levy Letter.
Happy Birthday and have a really lovely day.

And just one final thing. I mentioned that if you have a firework display
coming up and you want a little mention on the Levy Letter then do get in
touch. There’s one here, “the Northern Area Committee is holding a free
fireworks display for residents on the Dane Park playing fields on the 5th of
November. There’ll be children’s rides and refreshments available in the late
afternoon. The display starts at 7.30pm.” So thank you very much for that one
and enjoy!

If you’ve got an organised bonfire coming up and you want a mention in the Levy
Letter, then do get in touch. You can write to me, of course about anything,
the usual address to get me direct is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good Life

We were talking last night on the programme about food, about sausages and
scampi and I see that thirty years after Tom and Barbara in the Good Life,
first talked about self-sufficiency in suburbia, a new survey shows that
millions grow vegetables in their gardens just like Tom and Barbara according
to new figures. Others make their own clothing and even their own beer and
wine. It was seen as eccentric British behaviour when the programme was first
aired in 1975, but the ideals of the show have now hit home with the nation’s
environmentally-aware middle-classes. The survey shows that 40% now grow their
own vegetables as more families believe that organic food is healthier. And
talking of healthier, families are turning their back on margarine and other
spreads as concerns grow about the dangers of eating heavily processed foods.
Instead more and more of us are rediscovering butter, which they see as a more
natural alternative. It’s funny isn’t it, that at one time, these sp!
reads were a natural alternative. Anyway, thanks to the rise of these easily
spreadable versions, butter is increasingly seen as a convenient option. That
was the thing that we never liked about butter wasn’t it, that you could never
actually spread it! So there you are, sales of butter are on the increase.

Calendar

The BBC Look North Children in Need Calendar for 2006 has arrived. Now you can
pick up the calendar from the BBC’s receptions in Hull, Grimsby and Lincoln and
also on the BBC buses – the Radio Lincolnshire and Radio Humberside buses as
they travel throughout the region. The calendars are £5 each, with lots of your
pictures to go with every month of beautiful scenic views from around our
region and of course some pictures of me and Paul! If you want to send off for
one, then send the cheque made payable to the BBC and they are £6 to cover
postage and packing. So it’s £5 if you’re calling in to pick one up or it’s £6
if you’re sending off a cheque made payable to the BBC. The address to send
your cheques to is BBC Look North Calendar, Queens Court, Queens Gardens, Hull,
HU1 3RH. Of course all the proceeds are going to a very worthy cause, Children
In Need. And I hope to be able to tell you all, around Christmas time, just how
much money the calendar has raised for Children in !
 Need.

TV Awards

I don’t know if you sat through the TV Awards last night on the television, but
the revamped BBC1 series Doctor Who swept the board! It won all three of the
categories it was nominated in with the most popular actor going to Christopher
Eccleston and most popular actress to Billie Piper and also they received the
most popular drama award. For the most popular comedy programme, well Little
Britain of course won that. I have to say I’m quite a fan of Little Britain.
The most popular entertainment programme – The X Factor, (I could take it or
leave it!) the most popular reality programme – Big Brother, which bores me
rigid I have to say! And just one final one here from the list, the most
popular daytime programme – that’s the Paul O’Grady Show. He, of course, does a
wonderful job, so well done to him. So there you are, those were the results
from the TV Awards last night.

Photographs

Don’t forget we’re still looking for photographs for the Big Screen. We get
more and more through every day. The more unusual the pictures, the better
really. We had a picture on the Big Screen last week of a bulldozer pulling
down the Northern Foods building. I turned my nose up when I first saw that,
because I didn’t think it was really a scenic view of our region! Then my
colleague said no, stick it in, it’s a little bit different. So if you’ve got a
photograph that’s a little bit different, the more unusual the better, then put
it in the post or email it off to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that’s it from me for today. Enjoy your day and join me for tonight’s
programme at the usual time of 6.30pm on BBC1. And special guest tonight is the
legendary Des Lynam. Have a good day and look out for you Levy Letter tomorrow.

Bye

Peter
