Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I’m sure you’re looking forward to the weekend!

Thanks for all the emails this morning. I’ve just been reading several saying
what a nice guy Des Lynam comes across as. Of course, he’s got the unenviable
job of taking over Richard Whiteley’s programme Countdown, but I’m sure he’ll
do a great job. Des Lynam was on the programme last night and he was a really
nice man. On the programme tonight, if you’re a fan of Strictly Come Dancing,
then one of the judges, Bruno Tonyoli, will be joining us. So join us at the
usual time at 6.30pm!

Birthdays

The birthday mentions have taken off in quite a big way. This one comes from
Pat Taylor. She says, “Would you please wish my husband, Stephen Taylor, a very
happy birthday for October 20th. He is 50! The big 50.” Well, I know how you
feel, Stephen. Happy birthday and have a very good day and lots of love comes
from Pat.

Guests

Thanks for all your suggestions for guests to come on the programme. Keep them
coming in. If there’s someone you’d like me to chat to, if we can set it up,
we’ll certainly give it a bash. I’ve had more than a couple of requests for
Status Quo. So far, we haven’t managed to set it up, but I hear this morning
that the Status Quo concert in Hull is a sell out. But here’s another email,
this one comes from Linda Empson – “I know you’ve asked for guests to appear on
your show. Any chance of you getting the lads from Status Quo to visit you when
they come to Hull? I’ve been a fan for a good few years, (not saying how many!)
and I once went to see them in Bridlington Spa. I was eight months pregnant
with my daughter. Needless to say, she likes listening to Status Quo too, but
at thirteen she wouldn’t admit it to her friends!” Well, we’ll keep working on
that one and we’ll see if we can get Status Quo on the programme.

Weather

Snow White’s Little Helper will have the forecast tonight at 6.30pm as usual.
Again in the paper, I’ve mentioned this story a couple of times and I’ve still
not asked him about it. But the headlines this morning read “The coldest winter
since 1963”, “Gas could run out”, “Three day week looms”. Britain’s crazy
weather yesterday saw the warmest October the 27th on record as temperatures
hit 70! But in a few months time we could have no gas and it’s going to be very
cold. And have you noticed how green the leaves on the trees are still? Surely
they should have fallen by now, leaving the trees bare. Anyway, I read that
tourists who paid for trips to New England in America to see the spectacular
autumn colours in the trees are demanding their money back from tour operators
as even in America, the trees are still green. This late autumn is caused by us
having such a mild and long summer. Anyway, all the papers are making a big
thing about the fact that it’s going to be a very seve!
re winter and we’ll ask Paul about that a bit later on.

Living Alone

Living alone, of course at one time, was considered a rather sad situation for
a female to find herself in, but for many women, it’s now seen as an empowering
right of passage that helps them enjoy life to the full. Instead it’s the men,
who are more likely to find that being home alone leaves them feeling lonely or
cut off from friends and family, according to a study. It found that 96% of
those who live alone believe it is an important experience to go through before
settling down. Single person households now account for 29% of all UK homes
compared to 18% in 1971!

Drinking

I see from a survey in the paper that one in four Britons is a regular binge
drinker according to research. Almost one in three men and one in five women
drink at least double the healthy amount of alcohol on a night out. This means
that around eleven million Britons risk their health by binge drinking
according to this study. The figures come a month before the law liberalising
licensing hours comes into force.

Get In Touch

Don’t forget if you’ve got a story or a photograph that you think we might like
to see or if you’ve got a problem that you’d like me to take on in the

Don’t forget that the large Look North calendars are here for Children In Need.
Pictures of myself and Paul are on the cover and then some of your beautiful
pictures inside for every month of the year. They’re on sale at £5 if you want
to call into any one of our receptions or if you want to send in a cheque made
payable to the BBC – those are £6 to cover postage and packaging. And thanks in
advance for your support for Children In Need.

Unlucky

This is the sort of story that you dread. Motorists nearly caused a pile up by
leaping from their cars on the M62 to pick up a load of £20 notes that fell
from a police officer’s pocket! Colin Miller could only look on in horror as he
test-drove a motorbike and noticed that the thousand pound deposit, which he’d
saved, had fallen out of his jacket. Onlookers said that motorists swerved to a
halt in the middle of the M62 near Liverpool. Some were spotted running down
the busy motorway grabbing handfuls of notes and by the time PC Miller returned
to the scene the money, his wallet and the abandoned cars had all gone. He has
since appealed for the return of the money offering to donate it to charity,
but to no avail. Colin said he’d saved up for twelve months to get the money
together for the deposit for his dream motorbike and it all ended in tears.
Well, isn’t that just your worst nightmare? Poor old Colin.

Well, that’s it from me for today. I hope you have a very good weekend.
Whatever you’re up to, then I hope it goes well. Join me tonight BBC1 at 6.30pm
and look out for your Levy Letter on Monday.

Take care

Peter
