Hello it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter, hope your day is
going well. Hope you’ll be able to join me tonight BBC 1 six thirty for all the
days news. Last night I was talking to the singer Katherine Jenkins, and we’ve
got another top musical star on tonight … Jamie Cullum. Jamie’s in Hull today
for a concert and hopefully I’ll be talking to him on the programme tonight at
six thirty.

Competition

As promised we’ve got an exclusive competition in the Levy Letter to win a
couple of tickets to a very big night out to see the hit musical Blood Brothers
in York on Tuesday the 29th November. If you would like to go then answer this
question and send it back to me via email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] So, answer this
question and the tickets could be yours: which city is the story of the Blood
Brothers set? Look forward to getting your answers and we’ll have the winner in
a couple of days time.

Emails

Thanks for all the emails, especially those telling me (and there were quite a
few of them) how wrong I got it on Tuesday with all those copies of the Levy
Letter. My apologies for that, it was my mistake. A note here from Carole
Jones, Carole is one of the people furthest away who gets a Levy Letter, she
lives in Jeddah. ‘I’m in Saudi Arabia Peter and look forward to getting my Levy
Letter each day. Shortly I will be returning to the UK, at the end of the month
so I’ll be able to watch you and Paul again for real. Not looking forward to
your cold whether, here is Saudi Arabia it’s still 34 degrees.’ Safe trip back
Carole, we look forward to having you back watching the programme.

Little Porkies

I see from a survey out that many parents tell their children lies or ‘white
lies’ just to have an easy life. Some of the most common ones; ‘watching to
much television will give you square eyes’, I think I was actually told that
one when I was a kid; ‘Santa only visits good children’, that’s an old
favourite; ‘If you pull a funny face and the wind changes it will stay looking
that way’; ‘Eating crusts puts hairs on your chest’; good for the boys and not
for the girls I suppose; ‘If you don’t wash your ears out cauliflowers will
start to grow’; and this is my favourite… ‘ice-cream vans only play music if
they’ve run out of ice-cream’, that’s not just a white lie that’s cruel!

Birthdays

This has really taken off, thanks to all the emails for birthdays. Let me just
read a couple here. Firstly Jackie Furness, lives in Lincoln, her birthday is
not until the 30th of November but she sent me a very nice note and wants a
little mention, so an early birthday mention to Jackie.
The next one comes from Mally, ‘Dear Peter, it’s my wife Christine’s birthday
on the 3rd of November and also our silver wedding anniversary is on the 8th of
November. Would it be possible to give a mention for both events, thank you
very much indeed.’ Well thank you for that one, Happy birthday to Christine
today and Happy Anniversary as well. The next one’s from Cathie, ‘I wonder if
you can wish my son Sam King a happy twelfth birthday, he usually reads my Levy
Letter over my shoulder. This would make his day when he sees his name! His
birthday is on the 3rd and he likes the Levy Letter as much as I do’. That’s
good enough for me, Cathie, thank you for writing and Sam, a very happy twelfth
birthday for today. If you’ve got a birthday coming up and you want a mention
in the Levy Letter then just drop me a line on that and indeed anything else.
If you’ve got any photographs that you think would be good for the big screen,
or any footage that you’ve taken that you think I’d !
be interested in, then just email me [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you get some
footage of something you think is urgent then just ring me at the BBC any day.

Must have gadget for Christmas

There’s always something isn’t there, this year it looks like it’s going to be
satellite navigation. Men who feel completely lost when it comes to finding the
perfect gift for their partner could be forced to take directions from a women.
In car satellite navigation systems which use a woman’s voice to guide
motorists are set to top women’s Christmas lists throughout North Lincolnshire
and East Yorkshire this year according to retail outlets. Shop staff believe
the systems will be used to guide couples away from arguments as well as
towards their destinations. They eliminate any disagreements over whether to
stop and ask for directions. This is all very well, I quite fancied the
satellite navigation system myself, but they’re quite expensive. It says that
they’re great boys toys, but they’re also a big hit with the women who are sick
of their partner getting lost and arguments over which direction to go! That’s
the gift for Christmas, ‘sat nav’ is what they call it, satellit!
e navigation if you’ve got a spare couple of hundred pounds!

Shopping

Talking of money, a slump on the high street shows no sign of stopping with the
biggest fall in shopping numbers for six years. Shopping trips in October were
3% down on last year and the lowest since 1999. Now this is all bad news of
course for the shops but for us, with Christmas coming up, it could be good
news, because although they cut prices already they could be cut even more as
it gets time for us to buy our Christmas presents.

Breast Cancer

As you probably know breast cancer is something that is very near to my heart
and something I try and do quite a bit of work on. I was interested to read
that evening primrose oil can prove a powerful weapon against the most
aggressive forms of breast cancer according to scientists today. The substance
in the oil can help dampen down a gene that’s responsible for thirty percent of
breast cancers. Tests also showed that it boosted the effectiveness of the
wonder drug Herceptin. The response of cancer cells to the drug increased forty
fold. There you are, if you’re as interested as me in this subject, Evening
primrose oil could prove a powerful weapon against breast cancer. That’s from
research that I’ve just been reading today.

Just about it for the Levy Letter for the moment, join me tonight BBC 1 at six
thirty for all the day’s news. Paul will have the forecast and as I said
earlier I will be talking to Jamie Cullum. Have a good day, bye for now.
