After much discussion with everyone, I've changed e_utils and e_modules
specs so everything is in one package instead of separate packages for
each module / utility. This will make it easier for people to add new
modules / utils without having to rewrite the specs, and keep the total
 package count down.

I saw no complaints or discussion on the list, and I think it's just
fine the way it is. It's easy to install individual modules, and it's
just as easy to install them all. That's the way it should be.

As far as I'm concerned, it stays as is.

No, it's not a joke at all, and it is NOT the same thing as a
checksum. A checksum is a computed value used to ensure, to some
degree, data integrity. A magic number is a specific value or set
of values which are unlikely to appear randomly in a particular
location and thus have special meaning as a flag of some type. For
example, DOS executables have a magic number of MZ at offset 0.
This is in no way, shape, or form a checksum.

 * A MB on a CD is 1024 * 1024 bytes.

Yup.

 * A MB on a DVD is 1000 * 1000 bytes.

Same deal as a hard drive. It's a ploy. Just remember a standard DVD
holds just under 4.5 GB.

 * A MB/s on a bus means 1000 * 1000 bytes/s.

Ploy.

You must admit that this context sensitive unit 'MB' is everything
but clear with no less than three different interpretations.

The only one of these that isn't well-defined and well-known is the
bus speed example.

If we allow learning curve to dictate our modus operandi, why aren't
we all using MacOS and an iMac?

Standards that are stupid should not be respected and should not be

When you read MB, you're dealing with 1024*1024 except when dealing

I learn at school Kilo is 1000x and Mega is 1000*1000x, why would it

Because 2^10 is 1024, not 1000, and 2^20 is 1024*1024, not 1000*1000.

With a working configure there would be no eterm FC4 thread.

By the same logic, I could argue that with a working FC4, there would

Just because you can't get something to work doesn't mean that
something has a problem. In this case, the problem is with your
aclocal setup, not Eterm's configure script.

There is no e17 FC4 thread, because cvs-e17 configure scripts
aren't buggy, because the e17 people know how to write a configure

that each color modifier is less than 256 is the same as checking
that no bits of 8 (starting from 0) or higher are set. Or them all

also check to see if all three color modifiers are equal to 256 and
blow out early if you wanted to.
 if(!((rm^0x100)|(gm^0x100)|(bm^0x100)))

Both patches have been applied. I used a macro to maintain
readability.

If you would like, I would be willing to maintain the shading
routines. I don't know cvs well enough to commit anything but you
can bounce anything that gets submitted off of me and I'll double
check them; I feel pretty comfortable in that code now. I tried to
adjust the auto-magic stuff for sse2 but I don't know it well enough
yet. I manually linked Eterm to use the sse routines on my machine
and they work here. Please feel free to remove all my notes from

the new file: src/sse2_cmod.c (changed since Tres's earlier version)

Applied. Thanks. :)

The configure.in changes add --enable-sse2 which will be on by
default for x86_64. The incomplete tests for MMX_64 have been
removed. There was an odd dps_snprintf_oflow() line in
configure.in which was causing problems on my i686 system, and which
I think was a typo, so I removed it.

It is not a typo. The macro is defined in libast.m4. Either you
don't have libast.m4 installed properly, or you need to set
ACLOCAL_FLAGS to help aclocal find it.

The src/pixman.c changes add externs for the new sse2 function, and
conditionals to use them if HAVE_SSE2 is defined. Tres also added 8
or 16 byte alignment conditionally to colormod_trans() - this should
perhaps be done only for gcc?

Hopefully someone with a Solaris box will let us know if anything
broke portability-wise. (benr: HINT!) :-)

Tres indicated that adding -mpreferred-stack-boundary=16 might
still be beneficial on x86_64, but that it might consume extra space
at run time. I'm not in a position to make that call, but if you
agree its a good idea I can probably make the configure.in change.

Has anyone done any testing on this in terms of additional RSS being
needed?

Thanks,

If you enable -O[123] then you will need to use the values a b before
and after the BINSWAP call or they will be optimized away. And simply
using immediate values like I did will cause the compiler to simply set
the different registers that are used to access them in reverse order.
In other words the swap gets optimized out. The above code is without
-O and is clearly more complicated (by more than double) than it needs
 to be.

Interesting. You think I should just get rid of it then?

In fact my first attempt at a fix was to just not use the xor

was just trying to get his code to compile.

It's actually slower normally but faster optimized:

-O0
Profiling SWAP() macro...300 iterations in 0.052468 seconds, 1.7489e-08
seconds per iteration
Profiling BINSWAP() macro...300 iterations in 0.067905 seconds, 2.2635e-08

-O2
Profiling SWAP() macro...300 iterations in 0.014328 seconds, 4.776e-09
seconds per iteration
Profiling BINSWAP() macro...300 iterations in 0.014183 seconds, 4.7277e-09

(Done with libast's make perf)

Don't worry; you were properly credited in the ChangeLog.

It is not a 64/32 bit thing so much as it is a 32 bits/pixel thing.
I'm not as familiar with the code as I'd like to be but this code
snippet seems hard coded for 32bpp. Has this been tried using other
color depths? If icon_data is a pointer to a 16bpp image and we
divide it by CARD32 won't the nelements parameter be half of what it
 should be?

This has nothing to do with the depth of the display. icon_data is
defined in icon.h and is a 32bpp ARGB array of Imlib2 image data.
This is true irrespective of the Xdepth setting. Further, the format
for the property is set to 32-bit values, so it will be properly
handled on 64-bit systems (assuming the WM in question does it right).

[E-devel] Re: Eterm's latest patch

2005-04-26 Thread Michael Jennings
On Monday, 25 April 2005, at 19:06:16 (-0600),
Tres Melton wrote:

This appears to work because it is an off by one error (one pixel =
4 bytes). It will fail to adjust the top left pixel of the image
map and will go one pixel past the end of the image array at the
bottom right. This is a horrible patch and needs to be reverted
immediately. It should have no effect on my machine (an AMD64)
because it is little endian but it does. It also inverts the order
(to little endian) thus defeating the big endian concept.

You're right. I'll revert it shortly.

It is properly detecting AMD64 as little endian. What it is doing is
including /usr/include/libast/sysdefs.h and getting hosed in there. If
you look at a piece of sysdefs.h you will find:

 #ifndef WORDS_BIGENDIAN
 #  define WORDS_BIGENDIAN 0
 #endif

but in the Eterm code it does things like #ifdef WORDS_BIGENDIAN. Well
WORDS_BIGENDIAN gets defined to a false value but we don't check for
that. We assume that if it is defined then it is true. This is the
heart of the problem. My question is this: Should we remove the code
chunk above from libast/sysdefs.h or should we alter the code in Eterm
 to read something like:

 #if WORDS_BIGENDIAN
 ---do something
 #endif

The correct solution, which I've just committed, is the latter. I
changed the #ifdef's to #if's and put in a fallback in case someone is
using an older LibAST.

Either solution will work but we must be consistent. What decision
will cause the least amount of aggravation? Does something in
libast require that macro to be defined?

Yes, it's written to use #if WORDS_BIGENDIAN.

Sure, I can send a patch for that but I would like to straighten out
the endian-ness knot first as the two seem to be somewhat entangled.
If you prefer I will send a patch now but It will most likely have
to change once the endian-ness gets straightened out. Let me know
 what you want MeJ.

Please create any patches you send against current CVS.

Another issue that needs to get resolved in the ./configure script
is that it enables MMX on my AMD64. That's fine, I have MMX, but
the code in mmx_cmod.S is not compatible with a 64 bit chip. The
proper thing to do at the moment is to disable MMX on AMD64. Eterm
won't compile without doing that via ./configure --disable-mmx.
That should be automatic. There is also a HAVE_MMX macro that
 enables/disables certain things. I propose adding a HAVE_MMX_64
macro for using the MMX extensions on AMD64 (and EM64T).

I agree. Do you have any suggestions for detecting x86_64 as opposed
to i386?

I'm working on other things for Eterm right now including an MMX
port to AMD64. I have been in touch with, Willem-Jan Monsuwe
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the original author of the code and it sounds
like he did it just for fun when MMX first came out and is no longer
interested in it. I sent a preliminary mmx_64_cmod.S file and hope
he looks it over. If I don't hear back from him or he doesn't want
to get involved I'll try and finish the port myself. It has been a
while since I've coded in Asm so it might take some time for me to
 complete the port.

No hurry, though I'm sure the folks on Opteron systems would love MMX
support. :)

I have a few other patches that I would like to submit once we
untangle the knot that this endian-ness has caused so could someone
please tell me the best way to handle it: remove the #define from
libast or rewrite the Eterm code?

I've received the patches you've sent so far. I'm going to get
through them as quickly as I can, but my Real Job(tm) is keeping me
pretty busy too, so please be patient. :) But keep the patches
coming!

The first one adds an MMX optimized assembly routine for shading an
Eterm w/ 24 bit color. The second modifies pixmap.c to use the new
routine. I don't have the hardware to test this one with so someone
with an x86 (not AMD64 or EM64T) and 24 bit color should test it.

Doesn't work here. I get the following assembler errors:

mmx_cmod.S: Assembler messages:

 7.eterm-0.9.3-shade_24_optimize1.patch
 8.eterm-0.9.3-shade_24_optimize2.patch

All applied and committed.

Next I would like to start submitting some hooks for the
shade_ximage_??_mmx_64 routines that I am working on. Some of the
line numbers in the patch files might be off as these hooks are
already in my code. I think that they take 17 lines at the top of
the file. I did edit the patch files to remove the stuff that
wasn't relevant to each particular patch. Let me know if I've done
this correctly and how to fix it if I haven't. I will confess that
I need sleep (@ 5:45 am) but I compiled after all of them and tested
the parts that I have hardware for so everything should work (famous
last words). I made all of the patches from the src directory.

Changes in line numbers are not a problem, but if you could make the
patch from the top-level directory (cvs/eterm/Eterm/), that would be
great. :)

Thanks,
Michael

As a rule, I don't yell at people for committing small, clean patches
that fix bugs. Particularly bugs I can't test, like those on 64-bit
systems.

along the same lines, a quick grep for CARD32 shows:
 src/pixmap.c
 src/screen.c
 src/windows.c

windows.c and screen.c look fine, but pixmap.c looks a little fishy:
 XChangeProperty(Xdisplay, TermWin.parent,
 props[PROP_EWMH_ICON], XA_CARDINAL, 32, PropModeReplace,
 (unsigned char *) icon_data, sizeof(icon_data) / sizeof(CARD32));
i dont really know anything about X functions, so you guys would know whether
 this is fine too ...

The fix went into a header file, though, right? (I'm on a hella slow
connection right now, so I can't check myself.) :(

The spec files already had the snapshot functionality in them, so I

I'm sure that's great for you, but you're not the only one dealing
with these packages.

If you're already updating configure.in, you should update the spec
files at the same time. And all the other packaging files. It's no
more difficult than what you've already done.

i did - i said it helps making snapshots without having to fiddle
the main version and play with libtool versioning info
 etc. etc. etc. etc.

For you, and only you.

it makes automated releases that have a CONSISTENT VERSIONING SCHEME simple.

See above.

yes it is. see above. it IS an integer.

001 is an integer. .001 is not.

see above - again. it means the SAME rule can be applied to ALL
packages - no exceptions. for those close to a 1.0.0 we can keep
them at 0.9.9 or 0.16.999 for example - we can up the real version
as we please with automated releases incrementing the release. for
somone who does rpm packaging you seem to have instantly forgotten
the release number in packages (-1, -2, -3 etc.) the moment u look
at src. the .001 is the exact equivalent to it - but on the source
 side.

You are not making changes to all packages at once. Thus you have
created a situation where there may be a release of a particular
package in which nothing whatsoever has changed from the previous
release. I don't see this as a good thing, and it's no better than
CVS snapshots.

While saving yourself some work, you've created a metric fuck-ton of
work for those of us doing packaging. What you *should* do, IMHO, is
put someone in charge of Release Management. If one or more packages
are at a stable point for a release of some type, let the release
manager worry about version number changes and such.

These are separate packages. Not everything should be released all at
once, particularly when nothing has changed from the last release.
Trying to treat them all as one big unit defeats the purpose of having
things split out into libraries.

Furthermore, adding .NNN to the end doesn't create a versioning scheme
that's any more or less consistent than before (except for the 3
packages erroneously using _preXX). The only thing it accomplishes is
tagging everything with the same suffix, and by using the same suffix
for disparate packages, you've rendered it completely useless. No
useful information is gained from .001 or .002 other than that .002 is
a bigger number. Anything or nothing may have changed for any
particular package, and the unsuspecting user is forced to download
them ALL again even though there may be no difference whatsoever.

MAJOR.MINOR.PATCHLEVEL is a perfectly reasonable scheme, and when done
properly it provides useful information regarding which packages have
changed and which have not. I can certainly understand what a pain it
can be to manage 18 different packages on your own, but the solution
is not to make it easier for you while making it harder for everyone
else. The solution is to stop making it a one-man show when it's
not. Put a release manager (shadoi? dj2? digitalfallout?) in charge
of the packages you own, and let the maintainers of other packages
(RbdPngn for EWL, HandyAndE for engage, xcomp/atmos for entrance,
etc.) do their own releases.

And brainstorm things before you take unilateral action, at least when
it comes to packaging and such. There's a chance somebody might have
a different/better/cleaner idea.

so I'm just curious as to why this was a problem in this project. As
always, I'm asking nicely. I'm not being arrogant - just curious and
 maybe stupid :-)

1. Automatically-generated spec files often fail to end up in the
release tarball. This prevents rpmbuild -ta from working. Your
patch has exactly this problem.

2. Automatically-generated spec files lull software maintainers into
a false sense of security and are generally left to stagnate.

3. Spec files and the rpm dependency engine are not equivalent to
autoFUCK tools and cannot be treated as such.

4. Making spec file changes, like making configure.in changes, can
have notable and widespread results and should thus be done as a
conscious choice.

5. AutoFUCK tools generate files which differ between systems and
between builds. If you have to change your spec file whenever you
build, you have issues.

Etc.

 Wholeheartedly agree.

  4. Making spec file changes, like making configure.in changes, can

See point 3, since it's the same.

No, not quite. #4 has nothing to do with package dependencies. #3
was exclusively about package dependencies.

  5. AutoFUCK tools generate files which differ between systems and

Incorrect again. This point is about the re-generation requirements
for various files and the level at which they drive the system.

What I wan't to do, and what I believe more people want, is to make
spec creation a first class citizen in E's build system.

It already is. I actively maintain every spec file in CVS and
regularly build snapshot packages as changes are made. Others help
out, including Azundris and Cobra (both on SuSE).

No we don't. First off, release numbers are for packages, not vendor
source. Second, every spec file in CVS uses a release number of
0.MMDD or something similar. This cleanly and efficiently
provides the snapshot concept and information in a form which, when
a release is made, can be easily updated such that the release will
replace the snapshot.

i downgraded ONLY those packages that were pre_ something and needed
 downgrading.

Not true at all. You added the .001 to a grand total of 18
packages. Only THREE of those packages (evas, ecore, and e) actually
used the _pre. The rest you obfuscated for no apparent reason.

the extra .001 is now instead of that - and lets us to just a set of
releases without having to bum the maj/min/micro version.

You didn't have to in the first place. It was already taken care of.
Only 3 packages had the _pre problem which was causing the integer
expression expected error when doing version comparisons.

we can bump those separately as needed. so the .specs just need to
add an extra version filed (the .001). it may be time to make all
 the packaging stuff auto-generated... :/

We did that before, and it was a huge hassle. You really should leave
the packaging details to the packagers and focus on the stuff that
actually needs your attention.

Depends. For xterm, here's what you want:

For Eterm, it's the technical reference:

http://www.eterm.org/docs/view.php?doc=ref

ah, got a nice URL from my Gentoo peeps
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_escape_code

That's valid for old-style TTY terminals like DEC and Wyse. There's
not always a 1-to-1 correlation with X-based terms.

according to this, 6 is not 'overscore', but 'rapid blink' ... 49 is
 listed as 'superscript' though ...

In Eterm (and probably rxvt), 6 is overscore. If you want to see it,
look in term.c on line 1621. You can also find the other SGR mode
sequence values there.

either way, 6 is not what we at Gentoo want :)

Then don't ask for it. :)

My problem with building libast (and probably Eterm, but I have
gotten there yet), is that the sequence of autoF*C* commands in
autogen.sh were wrong for my installation.

In addition, I had to make a change to configure.in which continued
to show an error in line 91.

 basedir=.
 AC_OUTPUT(${srcdir}/include/libast/types.h Makefile include/Makefile \
   include/libast/Makefile src/Makefile test/Makefile \
   libast-config)

${srcdir} had to come out so I as left with

 basedir=.
 AC_OUTPUT(include/libast/types.h Makefile include/Makefile \
   include/libast/Makefile src/Makefile test/Makefile \
   libast-config)

Ironically, I had to add the ${srcdir} to pass make distcheck with a
previous set of autoFUCK tools. Figures, eh?

Then...Using my gnome-autogen.sh as a guide, I made the following
 changes to autogen.sh
 # Run the stuff.
 (set -x $LIBTOOLIZE -c -f)
 (set -x $ACLOCAL $ACLOCAL_FLAGS)
 (set -x $AUTOCONF)
 (set -x $AUTOHEADER)
 (set -x $AUTOMAKE -a -c)

That order is currently working for me, though it continues to insist
on running autoheader when not necessary. But I can live with it.

Latest CVS LibAST has some changes; see if those work for you.

IMHO, there is no advantage to having that ONE file as an edb

This doesn't seem right to me. setlocale(LC_ALL, ) is the correct,
portable way to set up locale information so that you can subsequently
use nl_langinfo() and friends. $LANG is not the only env var that
comes into play with locale setup.

From the locale(7) man page:

If the second argument to setlocale() is empty string, , for
the default locale, it is determined using the following steps:

   1. If there is a non-null environment variable LC_ALL, the
  value of LC_ALL is used.

   2. If an environment variable with the same name as one of
the categories above exists and is non-null, its value
  is used for that category.

   3. If there is a non-null environment variable LANG, the
  value of LANG is used.

Note that $LANG is *last*, not first.

to return all values If not all locales have the same value. (see:
LC_COLLATE=C, others=en_US). So I used only LC_MESSAGES to get the

LC_MESSAGES and use LANG as fallback if LC_MESSAGES is empty?

First off, it's setlocale(LC_ALL, ), not setlocale(LC_ALL, NULL). :)

Secondly, once you've done that, you cannot assume that the returned
locale string is any particular value. From the man page:

RETURN VALUE
A successful call to setlocale() returns an opaque string
that corresponds to the locale set.

Opaque means don't look at this thing. :)

Use nl_langinfo(CODESET) to get the character encoding being used.

This is not currently possible, but I'll consider it for a future
release. In the meantime, you could always write a wrapper script. :)

What prompted this? If that ends up in the Makefile, it will almost
certainly cause an error.  $LDFLAGS == $(L)DFLAGS

Unless raster has said otherwise, automake 1.4 is still the

On my x86 box, tiled backgrounds work with the same default

The config has a parameter of ':tile', but the comparison in
parse_pixmap_ops() is on 'tiled' using the BEG_STRCASECMP
function/macro that I cannot find the definition of.

Adding another else if below the initial tiled check, I get the
operation I expect. Checking 'tile' in that macro works.

This was fixed back in November of '02. Here's the patch:

Well, if someone had really wanted to fix this, they probably would've
just stolen the code from libast:

No offense, but your code is...well, iffy. Your use of goto's and

This is incorrect. The libltdl sources are generated by running
autogen.sh and act as part of the Imlib2 package. You may have issues
with your libtool.

kinda bugs me that we're now expecting end users to have libtool
