Yeah. I think that laser could've been a bit more random when locking
on to spots... then you would've had to watch where it aimed at. A
few more traps wouldn't've gone amiss either. But there you have it.
We got what we got... and I loved the game.

It'd better be hard. I've had enough of boss fights that weren't very
challenging. Good fights, well-designed... but too easy.

Hi,

In deed. I forgot about Truce at Bakura, and it would make an
interesting game. In fact a lot of the books would make interesting
games.

For example, imagine playing the final battle in last command. the one
where Mara ran C'bouth through with Luke's old light saber, and
killed the evil clone of Luke Skywalker. In all not a bad days work
for a Jedi appprentice. I always thought that battle would be pretty
fun in an audio game.

Of course, a game based on the New Jedi Order would be pretty good
too. Considering their 19 books in that series alone it could make for
lots of dlevels and there would be plenty of choices for playable
characters and missions. You'd have the major Jedi Knights like Luke,
Mara, Kip, Jacen, Jaina, etc as well as some of the lesser known Jedis
and Jedi apprentices.

For example, The attack on the world ship at the end of Star by Star
could be a fully playable game in and of itself. Unfortunately, the
ending of that book sort of sucked with Anikan Solo getting killed,
but Jaina Solo evened the score by whiping out the Vong troops with a
force lightning attack. She went a little nuts towards the end which
was sort of cool. now, if more Jedi had slottered the Vong left and
right like she did there wouldn't be any of them lef to worry about.
Lol!

Anyway, as I was saying that series would be especially good in a game
format. It truly lives up to the name Star Wars and the books were
certainly blood thirsty enough for wall to wall action in a video
game. The only problem is creating some of the organic weapons would
be difficult as I have no idea what some of the stuff sshould or would
sound like.

There's also Truce at Bakura which takes place less than a day after the

Hi,

Right now I don't think that will be necessary. For now I pretty much
have decided to start with an existing Star Wars game like Mysteries
of the Sith which already has the sounds, acting, etc already done. I
just need to take Genesis 3D and produce an accessible clone of the
game.

However, I don't think I'm going to use all the original sounds from
the game because some of them are recorded at 11025 KHZ mono. Pretty
low-fi for a game. Fortunately, i have plenty of newer Star Wars games
like Jedi Knight II with better sound effects. So what I'll likely do
is hunt for higher quality versions of the same sounds such as the
light sabers, blasters, droids, etc and replace the originals with the
higher quality versions. I don't think that is going to be a huge
problem as force powers, light sabers, storm trooper sounds, etc are
pretty easy to come by.

[Audyssey] Color idenfitying program

2010-12-04 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
My wife and I were talking and we came up with a fun little idea. For all of
you severely Vi/blind guys who have a webcam, or a laptop with a webcam mounted
on it, this is a small program for identifying colors. Lets say you are picking
out clothes to wear. You hold the shirt in front of the laptop (or camera),
press the Space bar, and a voice tells you what color it is as well as the next
2 most likely colors. I say most likely because webcam settings, room
lighting, and even the types of light bulbs in the room can tint objects and
offset the color a little. From my testing at home, it is pretty accurate. I
was just wondering if something like this would be useful.

www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/ColorWatcher.zip

If anyone wants to give it a try, here it is. Press Space bar to check a color
and press Escape to end the program. As a tip, hold the item close to the
camera lens before you press the Space bar, and keep it there until the color
is spoken. It works best this way.

Lets say you are picking out clothes to wear. You hold the shirt in front

I agree with you, the mainstream companies will have bad publicity if they
try to sue you.
I am very curious as I do not know starwar games at all.
If I understood your last post correctly, starwar games like Dark Forces,
mysteries of the sith and Rebel Asalt is fps?
Is there also traps like fire pits that the player have to jump across in
starwar games like Dark Forces, Rebel Asalt and mysteries of the sith?
Does the player also lose health in starwar games?
If so, does games like mysteries of sith contain potions to pick up?
Was there treasures like gems to pick up in the mainstream starwar games?
All the best for your new projects!

Subject: [Audyssey] Creating Accessible Star Wars Games

Hi all,

Thanks to all the discussion about accessible Star Wars games over the
last day or two I've decided to reconsider my position on releasing
some Star Wars projects I've had in mind for litterally years now. It
really has been something I have dreamed of doing as long as I can
remember, and I'm personally fed up with rediculous rules and
procedures that would bar me from persuing my own happiness and
enjoyment. For one thing despite what they say I don't really think
they would try and sue me over it as long as I kept the games as
freeware and specified that these were designed for VI gamers. After
all, it would likely cost them more to take it to court than they
could get out of me in a settlement/lawsuit. About the most they would
do if they found out about the games is get a judgment to have the
content/material removed from my website. That would be a pain in the
butt to be sure, but no biggy as I'm sure someone would slap it up on
Sendspace, Dropbox, etc the next day and share it anyway.

More importantly as I said earlier this has been a dream of mine. Ever
since I was old enough to watch television the first time I saw the
original Star Wars movie I became a serious fan of the movies, books,
toys, games , etc. Just ask my wife as I've got a large glass display
case in my living room filled with hundreds of Star Wars action
figures i've collected since i was three or four years old to the
present. In the mid 90's when the Star Wars PC games began coming out
like Dark Forces, Rebel Asalt, Jedi Knight, etc I purchased each and
everyone. Unfortunately, for me as the games were coming out I was
also really starting to lose my vision so the graphics were pretty
much just blobs of color on the screen. I could play them, sort of,
but had to depend on cheat codes to help me as everything was fuzzy
and not very clear. All the same, I was very happy witht the games,
and played them constantly. once I lost my sight I was pretty
disappointed over the fact I owned all these cool games and couldn't
play them. While in college I decided I'd be a programmer and write my
own Star Wars games. Now, 12 years later I still really haven't done
it, because of copyrights and licensing. Both of which had originally
been created without any thought or planning for special cases such as
being barred from a certain product based on disability. So what to do
about it?

Well, the answer seams quite simply. I should do what my heart tells
me is right, and that is to follow my personal dreams. Go ahead and
take the plunge and just write the games I want to play regardless of
rules and regulations. After all, i have the means and motive. to do
it. I shouldn't let that go because of some company's short-sighted
polacies.

When it comes to the means I'm litterally the perfect developer to do
the job. For one thing I have personal experience with the games
themselves so have a pretty good idea of what the final product should
be like. I went to college, learned to program, and obviously have the
technical skills to create a full 3D FPS game similar to the
originals. I've got the original media to work with. In fact, I still
own all the original software cds in my closet, and all I'd need to do
is grab the discs, unpack the gob files, and grab the sounds, music,
etc I'd need for the project. Finally, I just spent like two years
working on the Genesis Engine which was designed specifically for this
type of game. Since all that work is done I have the tools to do the
job at my disposal.

When it comes to motivation I have plenty of that as well. It was
precisely because of the FPS games of the 1990's Tomb Raider, Jedi
Knight, Doom, Quake, Soldier of Fortune, etc that got me into writing
accesible games in the first place. When I showed up on Audyssey
around 2000 or 2001 I looked around and was disappointed the only game
that was up to my previous standards was Shades of Doom. Everything
else was disappointing, and not at all what I had been hoping for.
Which brings me back to my point.

Back around 1998 my favorite Star Wars game was Mysteries of the Sith.
For one reason it was the first Star Wars game to feature Mara Jade as
a playable character, and I've always been a fan of her's since she
first showed up in Timithy Zon's book, Heir to the Empire. Not only
that it was a good game with decent graphics for the time, lots of
action, and it was fun. I've pretty much decided that I should start
with Mysteries of the Sith as it is both my favorite SW title to date,
and would be a great introduction to the series for new VI gamers.
Later on I can probably produce other Jedi Knight titles or one of the
Rebel Asalt games.

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream brands and how to work with them

2010-12-04 Thread Yohandy
I'm sending this to Brandon's list as well since I'd like everyone's opinion
on this.
not aware? you sure? There are some features specifically made for rock band
3 that I find hard to consider were implemented accidentally. the pitch
guide for vocals is one thing. it even works with older songs. Why would
they do this when a sighted player can see the pitch line and would know
precisely how to sing? and the biggest feature of all. when you play on
practice mode or one of the trainers, if you don't hit any notes, you can
hear the particular instrument stem in the background. I was actually able
to do a bunch of the drum training lessons this way by listening to the beat
first, then playing it once I had it down. what would their reasoning be for
adding such a feature? a sighted user doesn't need it at all since they can
see the colored gems, and in fact would probably not even notice it was
there. This is why all of us should let them know we're out there, even if
we only played the game at a friend's house or something. I know for a fact
that Harmonix is a company that's willing to help, we all just need to get
together and come up with a possible way of making the game fully accessible
and give HMX some solid ideas. I see threads on here that go on and on about
how so many games weren't accessible. yet I've let you guys know many times
about Rock Band improvements that have been made that help blind gamers, and
not many people act or even care. so which one is it guys? do you want these
games to become accessible, or is it just talk? cause if you simply sit
there and do nothing, and expect a miracle, it's not gonna happen. a few of
us have let HMX know that we're out there and that we play their games, and
they've emailed me back letting me know that they passed on the information
to the programming team. then RB3 comes around, and we find these new
features I mentioned above were added. so yes, I do think they're listening
to their fans, and are trying their best. Why else would they be on Twitter?
and have a way for us to email them? and have a Skype mailbox? Let's use
these methods of communication guys! If you have the money to travel to HMX
headquarters, try and attend one of their meetings and play the games! I
would've done this long ago if I could. however complaining on this list
about lack of accessibility among ourselves won't do anyone any good.

Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream brands and how to work with them

2010-12-04 Thread dark
Not to rain on your parade Yohandi, but actually I doubt very much they had
blind users in mind.

Music based games naturally attract people who use their ears, therefore an
audio guide is entirely within the grounds of appealing to customer base.

It would be like assuming that the original boppit game was made exclusively
for blind people because it has no visual elements, or because game X works
with a screen reader the developer had Vi customers in mind.

Obviously these sorts of features are only a good thing, sinse they can!
allow access to a game, however the concept of someone playing games without
looking at the screen is so profoundly alien to most people, it'd be very
doubtful indeed if this was in mind, pluss if it was, why not implement
some other useful features, such as spoken menues?

Obviously though when something does work, it's up to Vi gamers to
communicate this to the company and point out that what they've done
accidentally is a hugely good thing, so that they can improve on it later.

I've followed this stratogy with online games like Core exiles for years,
and so long as that conversation can start up, more often than not it's had
some really great results.

Beware the Grue!

I wrote the code in Visual basic 6.0 so porting it won't be as simple as

Welcome to Lawyer battle, a new and modern game for the 21st century!

In this pokemon style game you have the chance to catch, train and battle
innumerable types of lawyers against each other in an effort to see who

You can then battle your lawyer against other players, or attempt to catch
and train different types of lawyers to form a deadly fighting team.

Types include the shark type, the whiny type, the legal stickler type, and
 the sleasy type.

When leveled by fighting more high profile cases youy will find your

earn new special moves such as the sneaky, the ridiculous claime attack,
and
(unique to sleasy types), the under table bribe!

Take on other players in exciting pvp action as your laywers battle it

or embark on pvc, player vs court, to engage some of the nastiest monsters

Lawyer battle, gotta judge em all!

 Sorry, couldn't resist.

 Beware the grue!

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Mainstream Access was Bavisoft

Hi Bryan,

That's always possible, but I can think of cases were big name
companies and publishers have went to court and lost. For example, one
of the websites that hosts fan fiction stories was sued over it, and
the publisher that filed the suit lost. The reason had to do with the
fair use claus in the copyright law that says you can use a copyright
or trademark for education, if it is free, or advertises a certain
product or service, etc. A good lawyer, that represented the fan
fiction website, managed to convince the judge that fan fiction
represented a clear case of ffreedom of speech and that it was all
according to the fair use claus in the copyright law. Which goes to
show just because someone is a copyright holder of a certain product,
service, or trademark doesn't mean they are all powerful.

Another case in point is Civilization. Now, I think we all remember
that game was massively huge in the mid 1990's. Not suprisingly
someone came out with Freeciv, an open source clone, and the author
has never legally been attacked over it. Big reason is the author
released it as as educational, released it as free, and made it
totally open source. Activision, who currently holds the copyrights
for Civilization, don't legally have grounds to sue because Freeciv is
protected by the fair use copyright laws.

My point being if a person such as myself created a Star Wars game,
released it as fan fiction, made it open source, etc it really weakens
their case because I don't stand to proffit from my work. More over I
could legally say I created this project as an educational example of
how Lucas Arts could make one of their own games accessible etc. They
could trty and swing the judge their way, but the onis is on them to
prove how my freeware, open source, game has hurt the company. That
certainly can't say they lost millions of sales tdo to it because
sighted players wouldn't be interested in an audio only game, and they
themselves haven't attempted to target the VI market so who are they
kidding?

On 11/30/10, Bryan Peterson bpeterson2...@cableone.net wrote:
You could theoretically but suing someone is expensive. It's often not
worthwhile since even if you did get some financial award on your
counterclaim it might be less than the court costs. It would probably be
financial suicide to try to sue or countersue a big name company like
Nintendo or Sony, even if you had legal grounds to do so. They probably
have
hundreds of top notch lawyers who would beat the bushes to make sure the
judge and jury saw their side and only their side of the argument.

The food a bit of a joke, a bit of real, so half and half. The joke way I
was meaning by edentifying it bye holding up the plate, but if you were to
um, lets say, make a program that which could edentify food cans, that would
be excellent.

Also, in stead of just creating them on the computers, why don't you just
make little machines that which could edentify them, then show it on dragons
Den? Dragons Den is this cool program wen you make a device or what ever,
you get to show it to the dragon, which is the boss. The dragon is a human
obviously, but that's what they call the leeder. Anyways, you could show
your devices on the program and see if the dragon agrees. Though, I think
you might have to do a presentation.

I wouldn't be able to make it a bar code reader for exactly that reason. In
different places they would all mean different things. The program I have in
mind would require you to first hold a known box/can/money in front of the
camera to teach the program what it is. You'd type, for example, corn while
holding up a can of corn. Later on you could hold up a can of corn and it
would speak corn to let you know what it was. If it works it could be used
for a whole assortment of different items... books, cd cases, credit cards,
money, boxes of food, cans of food, pop bottles and cans. Basically anything
you could hold up close to the camera lens.

well bar code type things I guess though hmmm
there really should be a list or actual site for this or both.
I would like to continue this but since this stuff is more access
tech, I think it needs its own list since I will post this to some other lists.
Though if you make enough progs you could have a utilities package

[Audyssey] problem with maze game from t d l games

2010-12-04 Thread NIcol
Hi list
I experience some problems with maze game from t d l games.
I have version 0.20 on my pc.
I tried to go to their website:
http://www.tdlgames.co.nr
IN the tdl games submenu under programs, there is a shortcut for tdl games
website, but I was taken to:
http://www.webs.com/abuseFrozen.htm?uname=tdlgames
A website offering services to create blogs and websites. ON that page it
says that the requested website is not available.
I sent an e-mail discussing my problems to the address given in the
documentation:
tdlga...@yahoo.co.uk
The e-mail bounced back to me saying: this user does not have a
yahoo.cco.uk account.
I went to audiogames.net.
Following both the url and download url for tdl maze game, I get a 404
not found error.
And I could not find tdl maze game on
www.pcsgames.net.
I found 2 bugs in maze game.
I played maze game quite a number of times and here is what I found:
1. It happened twice to me that while the ammo sound is playing, there is a
monster; I am unable to pick up the ammo without being killed. In other
words, first I centre the sound of the ammo in my speakers. Then I need to
take 3 steps to pick up the ammo.
I take 2 steps and there the monster is, so when I take the third step I
pick up the ammo but at the same time the monster ate me.
2. all The other times It happened to me that I encounter a monster but
then if I press s for shoot, it looks like my ammo is depleted.
If I press s for shoot, the monster sound starts from the beginning. I
moved back to the start of the maze twice , but I could not find any ammo.
Then if I go back to the monster, I am still not able to shoot.
I press shift r twice to reset the sound system but this did not help.
Does anybody know if tdl games still exist and if so, where can I find them?
  Many thanks.

[Audyssey] bundger.

2010-12-04 Thread Shiny protector
Hi Thomas,
I thought that you could create a bundger version on the computer. If you don't
know what bundger is, its this little device. It is also useful for
edgecation... I mean with maths questions.

So, you answer 5 maths questions, then you play the game. Its not like algebra,
its like times, division, subtraction and those basic stuff. You have to answer
the questions right until you get 5 questions right, then after that, you have
to play this game which is quite cool.

So, your fathers plain has crashed. Then what happens is this girl which is 12
years old is in this yard, and this bad man called Gunter comes walking up to
her. He says, I am Gunter, and she runs away from him because he's bad.

[Audyssey] TDV final mission objective

2010-12-04 Thread Chad Fenton
Hi all. I'm stuck again at the seeming end of mission mode in TDV.
Upon destruction of the final radar station, I receive the order to
destroy the cloning facility/fortress from Chase, whereupon Brutus does
his dialogue. However, I'm stumped as to what to do next. If
destroying the radar tower initiates the final boss battle with him and
any other choppers or aircraft along with him, this does not happen.
It's nothing like destroying the power plant immediately brings on the
attack by the choppers, as you can lock onto one right away. After the
dialogue with Brutus is concluded and you press l to lock onto available
aircraft or ground targets, all I see is a guard tower I neglected to
destroy back in sector Q. I'm also at 50,000 feet and have gone as high
as 80,000 feet, so if there was something to see over 100 miles away,
I'd think my radar would've found it. No Brutus, no other aircraft, and
no indication of where I need to travel to in order to finish the
mission. Any help is appreciated.

Subject: [Audyssey] problem with maze game from t d l games

[Audyssey] Help with Pipe2

Hi after giving up playing Pipe 2 because of my frustration on the Electricity

Something else I'm finding tricky and needing help with is when I'm on a

come on, and also I get the hint when I jump a barrel, but sometimes said
barrel still runs me down even after I've jumped it. Are there any tips on
timing things right? I seriously want to beat the game at least once so I can
get cheat codes. Smile Thanks from Lori

Steam and electricity on side scrollers are random. There's no
distance persay, you just have to be careful. As for jumping a barel,
just wait until it's as close to the center of the stereo field as
possible. In essence, at the very last possible moment.

In America, quite possibly, sinse American money is irritatingly all the
same colour and design (or it was when I was lastt over there), only the
numbers on the notes are different.

Interestingly enough though, the colour change program probably would work
to an extent with English notes sinse they do at least have patches of
different colour (how I tell them apart myself), though of course the
colours can often be faded.

My wife and I were talking and we came up with a fun little idea. For all
of you severely Vi/blind guys who have a webcam, or a laptop with a
webcam mounted on it, this is a small program for identifying colors.
Lets say you are picking out clothes to wear. You hold the shirt in front
of the laptop (or camera), press the Space bar, and a voice tells you
what color it is as well as the next 2 most likely colors. I say most
likely because webcam settings, room lighting, and even the types of
light bulbs in the room can tint objects and offset the color a little.
From my testing at home, it is pretty accurate. I was just wondering if
something like this would be useful.

www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/ColorWatcher.zip

If anyone wants to give it a try, here it is. Press Space bar to check a
color and press Escape to end the program. As a tip, hold the item close
to the camera lens before you press the Space bar, and keep it there
until the color is spoken. It works best this way.

Actually Jeremy, i'd find that handy as well.

At the moment I have to be fairly careful with thins or boxes, sinse I can't
read the print and only some are recognizable colours.

The only issue is I wonder how you'd cope with the ocr? remember I'd be
using it on British stuff rather than us, so if it only identified us brands
by some form of recognition I might have a problem.

Then again, if ocr is good enough to read stuff from a web cam, well
that's actually pretty awsome!

How do I set it up to use this identifier? I tried to use it and everything

I wouldn't be able to make it a bar code reader for exactly that reason.
In different places they would all mean different things. The program I
have in mind would require you to first hold a known box/can/money in front
of the camera to teach the program what it is. You'd type, for example,
corn while holding up a can of corn. Later on you could hold up a can of
corn and it would speak corn to let you know what it was. If it works it
could be used for a whole assortment of different items... books, cd cases,
credit cards, money, boxes of food, cans of food, pop bottles and cans.
Basically anything you could hold up close to the camera lens.

It sounds like your basic gamebook choose your own adventure style thing,

Also, it's likely the text of the game's story is directly copywrite so

So, you answer 5 maths questions, then you play the game. Its not like

after that, you have to play this game which is quite cool.

And space colony cleaner had more bugs than the world's largest ant farm.

I'm afraid your on a none starter with this one Nicle, the game is old, the
developers no longer around, and even if they were, their games were buggy
at the best of times.

Hello Nicol, unfortunately, TDL games is no longer developing games. The
last I heard, they were supposed to be doing temple of steel, and the lsat
game they ever did was space colony cleaner.

Subject: [Audyssey] problem with maze game from t d l games

1. It happened twice to me that while the ammo sound is playing, there is
a

monster; I am unable to pick up the ammo without being killed. In other
words, first I centre the sound of the ammo in my speakers. Then I need to
take 3 steps to pick up the ammo.
I take 2 steps and there the monster is, so when I take the third step I
pick up the ammo but at the same time the monster ate me.
2. all The other times It happened to me that I encounter a monster
but

then if I press s for shoot, it looks like my ammo is depleted.
If I press s for shoot, the monster sound starts from the beginning. I
moved back to the start of the maze twice , but I could not find any ammo.
Then if I go back to the monster, I am still not able to shoot.
I press shift r twice to reset the sound system but this did not help.
Does anybody know if tdl games still exist and if so, where can I find
them?

 Many thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Color identifying program

2010-12-04 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Mike, it should work with the built in camera automatically. It might have
incorrectly called your camera a USB camera, but in all likelihood it was
referring to the built in cam.

When you say everything was white, do you mean it was identifying everything as
white? If you have some sight, keep in mind that the laptop screen will turn
all white and will NOT show the image being seen by the camera. The reason I
turn the screen all white is because it is then serving as an additional light
source to help the camera see the object.

Yes it was saying as I put things in front of the camera it was all white. I
wonder if I had the clothes to close to the camera or what do you think
could or would cause that to happen?

Re: [Audyssey] Color identifying program

2010-12-04 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Mike, there are a few things this could be. If the program isn't properly
detecting the camera usually it will call everything red, so that probably
isn't whats happening. Depending on your cameras settings, it could be out of
focus. It is also possible that you are sitting in front of a super bright
light lol. I doubt that though.

Has anything been identified as a color other than white?

Re: [Audyssey] Help with Pipe2

2010-12-04 Thread Greg Steel
Hi here is what you can do on the side scroller levels . Don't hold down
the right arrow key that way if you here a steam or electricity starting
that way you won't die or get fried by the electricity. As for the barrels
as soon as you here the warning jump twice over them as for the sewer lids
and you will be safe. The way the electricity levels work is, if I remember
after every two currents their is a jolt so make sure that the current is on
the other side before you twist the valve. I hope this helps.

Hi after giving up playing Pipe 2 because of my frustration on the
Electricity levels, I've not decided to give it another shot, if only to
pass the thing! Something else I'm finding tricky and needing help with
is when I'm on a side-scroler level how far do I need to walk before a
steam or electricity will come on, and also I get the hint when I jump a
barrel, but sometimes said barrel still runs me down even after I've
jumped it. Are there any tips on timing things right? I seriously want
to beat the game at least once so I can get cheat codes. Smile Thanks
