[JAWS-Users] Another WinAmp question

2006-12-01 Thread Walt Smith

I've got a very weird thing going on with JAWS 8.0 and WinAmp 5.24. If I
simply open WinAmp from the desktop without selecting a file to be played,
it appears that something else is showing through. If I select a file and
press ENTER on it, WinAmp comes up but with a whole bunch of stuff also on
the page, none of which are links. It appears to be the WinAmp Library, but
nowhere can I seem to locate the WinAmp Library settings to see if I can
control this behavior. Is there a new version since 5.24 and if so, why
isn't WinAmp checking for it as I've told it to?

[JAWS-Users] Fw: [jaws-users] JAWS in say all

2006-12-01 Thread Walt Smith

This is normal. JAWS is not performing its Say All function when automatic

your Say All appears to be working as advertised.

With my installation of jaws 8 and with the say all using the real speak
voice, I can use insert+down arrow to read using the real speak voice
but if I use insert+alt+down arrow it uses eloquence.

I have outlook 2003 set to read messages automatically when I open them
but it too will use eloquence and not the real speak voice.

Not sure if I'm missing something somewhere, I haven't had time to take
a look up to now.

[JAWS-Users] Re: question: deleting desktop items

2006-12-04 Thread Walt Smith

Hi, Marilyn -

Well, Hailley's statement isn't 100% correct. If you have downloaded
programs on your desktop, when you press the DEL key, you'll actually delete
the entire program, not simply an icon, so you need to be careful. What I do
is perhaps a bit more techie, but it's really the only safe way:

If something really _is_ a program and not simply an icon, I open the
C-drive, open the Documents and Settings folder, open the folder with my
account name on it, open the Desktop folder, and move the program files
somewhere else. I have a folder called Internet Downloads where I store all
of my downloads, but occasionally, something will get placed on the desktop
by accident, so I'll move it from C:\Documents and Settings\Walt\Desktop to
C:\Internet Downloads.

Hope this helps clarify things. By the way, if you do press the DEL key on
something on the desktop, it should identify it in the pop-up confirmation
message as an icon, a file, or whatever, so you _should_ receive some
warning in advance, but I'd be just a little leery trusting this too much.

Did you reboot your system after you removed the program? Also, how did you

[JAWS-Users] Re: Looking for a program

2006-12-05 Thread Walt Smith

Okay, here's how to get what I think you want (a list of all the files in
your My Documents folder):

1. Open Start Menu.
2. Press P to open the Programs submenu.
3. Select the Accessories submenu and press RIGHT ARROW.
4. Locate Command Prompt and press ENTER.
5. At the Command Prompt, type cd my documents The quotation marks are
required.
6. Type dir /b /on /s C:\MyFiles.txt
7. Type exit to close the Command Prompt.

This will create a file named MyFiles.txt in the root of your C-drive. If
you want to have the list placed in the My Documents folder, don't include
the C:\ when you type the dir command.

[JAWS-Users] Re: a strange issue with the properties dialogue in IE and jaws

2006-12-05 Thread Walt Smith

Sarah -

If the scripts are in your user files folder, you won't lose them. A repair
only affects the contents of the shared files folder, never the user files
folder. If you're really worried, copy your user files folder to a temporary
folder somewhere on your C-drive.

However, I don't think you need to repair JAWS. At least, try the following
first:

1. Shut down JAWS with INSERT+F4.
2. Press Windows Key+R to open the Run dialog.
3. Type jaws71 /default.

The above command should be jaws7 /default if running JAWS 7.0. This will
bypass all customization that you've done to JAWS (it uses _only_ the files
in the shared files folder) and will start it in the same mode it was in
immediately after you installed it. Now, open the IE properties and see if
the problem is still present.

2006-12-06 Thread Walt Smith

Just unload JAWS and restart it or reboot your computer. All that using the
/default flag does is to load JAWS using only the files in the shared files
folder, bypassing anything you've modified. To do the repair, put the 7.0 CD
into your hard drive and allow it to autostart and select repair. Like I
said, this won't affect your user settings in any way.

Hi all. I just got my CD and installed jaws 8.0. I am happy with eloquence

stop jaws from talking there is that little bong sound indicating an error.
But there is no error message, just the bong. Some times this happens at
the end of a message in outlook express without my doing anything. When I
run the spell checker in outlook express jaws says blank instead of saying
the miss spelled word. Someone mentioned in passing on the handyman list
that he was having the same trouble. As I type this I am running jaws 7.0.
Last night I was using jaws 8 with MS word and suddenly it stopped reading
everything. Up and down arrow or left and right arrow, all it would say was
blank. Maybe it was swearing at me. Then when I pressed say all it
crashed. I don't know about anyone else but I am beginning to give window
eyes a good hard look.

Al -

This is/was Walt, not Rick.

Most spyware and adware programs remove _dangerous_ cookies, but not _all_
cookies. Many cookies store preferences and other site-specific information
that would have to be reset if all cookies were deleted. The spyware and
adware programs know which ones to delete by name, but these other general
cleanup programs aren't that intelligent. Just for example, the information
about my Google.com preferences (how many hits to display, etc.) is stored
in a cookie and it would be stupid to delete it and then have to re-enter
the information every time I visit Google. You'll hear that all cookies
should be removed weekly or whatever, but this is just the kind of
misinformation that gets started and then, can't be stopped.

It's funny you mention the cookies thing. Other people will say just the

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reg-Scrub and Scripts

2006-12-08 Thread Walt Smith

Yes, this is more or less the way it works. RegScrubXP (which I've used for
several years) has a serious focus problem and you _do_ need to keep
pressing ALT+TAB to move away from, then back to the main program window.
The scripts, as far as I've been able to determine, do nothing to overcome
this.

As to where you placed the scripts, you'd need to put them into the user
files folder in every version of JAWS you have installed if you want them
available regardless of which version you have loaded. There's no way to
have any scripts installed in only one location and have them available to
multiple versions of JAWS.

2006-12-08 Thread Walt Smith

I think this is correct, David. Sit licenses work totally differently, as
best I understand it, from indiviedual licenses, so if you've got a private
license, you can't use it on a machine that's tied into a system that's
running a site license and vice-versa. I've never had any personal
experience with a site license, but from the explanations I've heard,
they're very different in terms of installing JAWS than an individual user
license would be.

If I might jump in here, the way I understand it is like this. A site
license can be used up to as many silences that are available so long as it
stays on the particular site that owns the silence in question. I'm sure
Walt will correct any errors on my part, but that is the way I understand
things. My wife works in a rehab training school that owns a site silence
of jaws and window eyes both.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Clock

2006-12-12 Thread Walt Smith

Patti -

Any time you install scripts, they go into your user files folder, which is:

C:\Documents and Settings\user_account_name\Application Data\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\jaws_version\Settings\ENU

You can easily locate this folder by navigating the tree in the WinZip
dialog that comes up when you press SHIFT+E to extract the files.

As Lois said, you must do some editing and recompiling of scripts, so if
you're not comfortable doing this, don't install them without some help.

It's not a problem to use the subject line, if it contains a standard
prefix.
[jaws-users]
is the prefix David set for this list, so it never fails in a message rule.
If this isn't the case on other lists, then the, to, and cc fields would be
a better choice.

It has come to my attention recently that google groups does allow
attachments to be posted to their mailing lists where as Yahoo gave us the
option of turning that on or off depending on the list owner's personal
preference. So since google groups doesn't afford us the choice of turning
that off I'm adding this to the list guide lines No attachments should ever
be posted to the list. That's one of the most common ways of picking up a
virus so Rick and I have agreed that we don't want such things on here. So
no attachments folks all right. I'd hate to have to do something unpleasant
in the name of protecting almost 200 people that are currently subscribed to
this list. If you guys want to send attachments to each other privately
knock yourselves out that's your business. Thanks in advance for following
this and the other guide lines that I feel have made this a very successful

It sounds to me like what you're saying is that you recently installed XP on

There are several places where Classic has to be set. One is in the Control
Panel in the Display settings and the other is in Control panel in the Task
Bar and Start Menu settings on the Start Menu page. Have you changed it in
both places?

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws 8 is saying selected

2007-01-02 Thread Walt Smith

Scott -

If I'm understanding your message; and I don't guarantee that I am; this
might be either a corrupted installation or your video drivers. Whenever I
hear about a problem like this, my first suggestion is to track down and
install the latest set of video drivers. If you find a set that's later than
those already on your computer, there's only one way to install them and
here are the steps. Don't even begin this process unless you feel confident
that you can successfully complete the installation process--get sighted
help if you're not 100% certain:

1. To locate drivers, go to the web site for the manufacturer of your video
card. If you don't know this, get a copy of Belarc Advisor and run it and it
will tell you. You may have to Google the manufacturer's name to locate
their web site.
2. Download the latest set of drivers for your model of video card. Chances
are that this will be in the form of a .exe file that you run in order to
install the drivers. Don't run it yet.
3. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS dialog. Under Options, select Basics and
uncheck the Automatically Start JAWS item.
4. Go to the Start MenuProgramsJAWS whichever version you're running and
open the submenu. Arrow down once to Tools, then arrow right and locate the
Video Intercept Manager. Press ENTER.
5. When Intercept Manager opens, select Uninstall Video Intercept and press
ENTER. When this process completes, JAWS will not be running, so you must
turn on Narrator in order to have speech during installation of the new
drivers. Press Windows Key+U to turn on Narrator.
6. Now is the time to run the video driver installation program. Follow the
prompts as Narrator reads them to you. You will have to be patient when
using Narrator, since it doesn't have the capability of reading individual
lines, etc., that you'll be used to in JAWS.
7. After running the installation program, you should receive a message
indicating that the new drivers have been successfully installed. Shut down
and restart your computer and again, start Narrator.
8. Go to the Start MenuPrograms item for the same version of JAWS as in
step 4, above, Select Tools and then Video Intercept Manager. This time,
choose to install video intercept support.
9. The Video Intercept Manager should give you a message indicating that
this action was successful. Now, press INSERT+J to open the JAWS dialog,
select OptionsBasics and again check the Automatically Start JAWS item.

10. Now, restart your computer again. JAWS should come up talking.

Note: I don't know about other manufacturers, but if your video card is from
ATI, you will have to install Microsoft's Dot Net Framework before you can
install the drivers. ATI provides a link to the latest version of Dot Net
Framework on the same page where you download the drivers.

[JAWS-Users] Changing verbosity and punctuation

2007-01-03 Thread Walt Smith

Hi, Victor -

It might also matter where you make the changes. I was already in Outlook
Express, so I simply changed the verbosity from Advanced to Intermediate
after pressing INSERT+V and when that didn't alter anything, I used the same
approach to change the punctuation setting. However, I just now changed the
verbosity setting by means of Configuration Manager and the punctuation
settings wasn't changed then, either, so my guess is that you may have
changed it manually and then forgotten. I was pretty sure that there was no
direct connection between verbosity and punctuation; that is, that altering
one would affect the other; and this seems to verify it.

Hi Walt,

I have my eloquence set to intermediate and my punctuation set to some.

In point of fact, when I set my verbosity level to intermediate, it
automatically set my punctuation to some.

I didn't have to do anything with it.

I remember that because I realized that I had to change the punctuation just
after I did that and it had already been changed.

There is a possibility that I changed it before I changed the setting to
intermediate, but I don't think so.

In any case, thanks for pointing out that the punctuation has to be set to
some or one to get rid of those lines.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reoccuring Error Message

2007-01-03 Thread Walt Smith

Okay, that's almost certainly your problem. As I've said before, never,
never, never run JAWS Merge. It causes more problems than it saves. What you
should do is copy your .jdf files (using CTRL+C) directly from the 7.0 user
files folder to the 7.10 user files folder and let it go at that.

You can test out how JAWS is working without your merged files by doing the
following:

1. Unload JAWS using INSERT+F4.
2. Press Windows Key+R.
3. Type jaws71 /default and press ENTER.

Note that in the above, there is no space between jaws and 71, but there is
between jaws71 and the forward slash.

This should start JAWS with all of its normal defaults in place; that is, it
bypasses any files in your user files folder. See if the problem occurs
under these circumstances and if it doesn't, erase everything that's in your
7.10 user files folder and start over by copying only the .jdf files from
the 7.0 user files folder.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reoccuring Error Message

2007-01-04 Thread Walt Smith

Well, for one thing, it works okay for many people. The trouble is that
while it may work just fine for you, it may break someone else's files and
as far as I know, they haven't figured out exactly what specific factors
cause the damage. It may be the size of the file; it may be the length of a
given line in one of the files; it may be the characters contained in a
given line. Personally, I think that everybody who, like Donny, has ever had
a problem that they can be absolutely sure is due to the Merge utility
should let FS know about it because until they're convinced that there's
still a problem, they're not going to put much effort into tracking it down
and fixing it. Also, they may need specific files to test with if they can't
reproduce breakage in-house with their own files.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Copying JAWS Files

2007-01-05 Thread Walt Smith

Donny and anyone else interested in this subject -

What follows is not trivial information and should be read completely before
starting to manually move customized files from an older to a newer JAWS
version. I realize that it's not going to make for the most exciting (and
maybe not even the easiest) reading, but it's absolutely essential
information and faioling to understand it and follow the instructions may
result in major JAWS problems.

Let's begin by defining some terms:

Shared files - These are the files that are installed whenever you install a
new version of JAWS. They are placed into a different folder than are the
user files and should _never_ be changed or altered. Similarly, the contents
of the shared files folder should never be changed in any way by either
adding new (third party) files or by removing files you don't think you'll
ever use. Doing either can break the installation or repair routines.

User files - These are any files you've changed using Script Manager,
Keyboard Manager, Configuration Manager, etc.; as well as any third party
files (files not supplied by Freedom Scientific). Any time you install third
party files, you must place them into the user files folder.

Okay, let's find the two user files folders first:

Note: it may be helpful to you as you proceed if you have Windows Explorer
configured to announce the full path whenever you change from one folder to
another as you'll be doing below. This is set by way of Control PanelFolder
Options and is found under the View tab. The specific items are Display the
Full Path in the Address Bar and Display the Full Path in the Title Bar.
Both of these should be checked or indicated as on.

1. Press Windows Key to get to the Start Menu.
2. Press the letter P to move to the Programs submenu.
3. Press the letter J to move to the version of JAWS you've been using--the
one whose files you want to copy.
4. Press RIGHT ARROW twice until you hear Explore My Settings and press
ENTER. This will open the user files folder for the source version of JAWS.
5. Now, repeat steps 1 through 4, except that in step 3, you want the
version of JAWS you just installed--the version to which you want to copy
the files.

Next, some general things to be aware of:

1. You should move any third party files of _any_ type (that is, any file
extension) that you find in the source folder. Third party files are files
that are _not_ part of the set of files that are supplied with the JAWS
package. For example, Ad-Aware, Nero, etc.; that is, files that you've
downloaded from somewhere else (like JFWlite.com) and installed yourself.
2. You are responsible for making any changes to JAWS-supplied scripts on
your own. Even if you used the Merge tool, it doesn't update script files,
so if you've changed something in Default.jss, Internet Explorer.jss,
Outlook Express.jss, etc., you'll have to make those same changes all over
again with the new versions of the same scripts. You should _never_, under
any circumstances whatever, copy entire JAWS-supplied script files (files
with an extension of .jkm, .jss, .jsb, .jsd, .jsh, or .jsm) from one JAWS
version to another. Scripts are unique to each JAWS version and cannot be
used across versions. As previously indicated, this may or may not be true
for third party script files, but when FS releases a new version of JAWS,
the scripts receive as much work and as many changes as any part of the
program, particularly those scripts for major applications like Outlook and
Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. This same
prohibition applies equally to configuration files (files with an extension
of .jcf): these should _never_ be copied from an older version of JAWS to a
newer one.
3. You must be aware that the names of some files have changed and that
because of this, you must rename them if you copy them. For example, in JAWS
7.0, files for Outlook Express were named Outlook Express 5-6.*, but in
7.10, the name was changed to Outlook Express.*. Similarly, the Internet
Explorer files names were also changed, but I think this took place between
6.20 and 7.0. In any case, the JAWS Merge tool does _not_ always catch these
name changes, so that's yet another good reason not to rely on it.
4. While you can move customized graphics files (with an extension of .jgf)
from older versions of JAWS to newer versions, don't do this when the new
version is 8.0. Beginning with 8.0, FS began to make some major changes in
some applications (Outlook and Outlook Express, for example) in terms of how
various characteristics (such as whether or not a message contains an
attachment) were recognized and announced and they're not relying on
graphics as much as they used to, so older .jgf files may not work as they
once did. If you have customized graphics files for JAWS-supplied
applications, try re-creating the graphics labels from the beginning if
you're working with

[JAWS-Users] Re: Acer notebook utilities with JAWS?

2007-01-05 Thread Walt Smith

Steve -

Welcome to the list.

I'd bet a year's salary that you'll not find any existing scripts, since
you're talking about a specific model of a specific computer brand with
specific versions of these utilities. This is going to limit your
options--either learn scripting, yourself, so you can write scripts or pay
somebody (and the price won't be cheap) to write them for you. Even then,
depending on how these utilities were written, they may not be scriptable,
anyway. You can try using the JAWS Cursor and the mouse button simulation
keys--I've found this technique to occasionally be useful with such programs
for which no scripts exist and which aren't very well behaved with the JAWS
default scripts.

The Acer came with a bunch of pre-installed utilities that I'd like to use,
but they're not accessible at all. For example there's some program called
Acer Empowering Technology, which does all the power management settings
for the computer. But JAWS 7.0 won't tell me what any of the buttons are
called.

Does anyone know of scripts, or something, that I could use? Any other
suggestions?

This is my first post here. Hi everyone.

Why? It's not that I'm questioning your intent here, but there are

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws and ATI

Marsha -

Since the information you have came from Zoomtext, why not contact them? Are
you running Zoomtext when this takes place? I have an ATI card in my Dell
system and that driver (DCMD0C0.dll) is not on my system. There must be more
to the message than simply that driver name--are you sure there isn't more
being displayed? What version of JAWS are you using? My suggestion is to get
the latest ATI drivers for your computer and install them, as I think I've

I don't want to keep beating a dead horse; however, I will try one more

period of time, I get the following message.

DCMC0d0.dll

When the crash occurs, most of the time, there is an awful noise which
comes through the speakers. I've found some information on this subject but
it is talking about the Nvidia card while I am talking about the ATI card.
Zoom text says in some post, to delete the dcmc.0d0.dll file. Since I have

[JAWS-Users] Re: Keyboard Manager Question

2007-01-06 Thread Walt Smith

It doesn't matter. While those scripts are included, they don't work and
never have. You _can_ (as FS already has) assign keystrokes to change the
speech _rate_ and _pitch_, but you cannot change the volume on the fly. If
you assign keystrokes to the Increase and Decrease Volume scripts, you
_will_ hear the appropriate announcements, but that's all that happens. I do
not understand why these relics are still included--perhaps they work with a
few synthesizers, but they never worked with any synthesizer I ever used and
I go back to JAWS 3.50.

One is the full version and one is the demonstration version. To run the

[JAWS-Users] Heads up regarding the new Office 2007 programs and older versions of Office

2007-01-07 Thread Walt Smith

I've run this past the list owner and he says it's okay to post. It appears
that documents created using the very new Microsoft Office 2007 programs
(Word, Excel, etc.) cannot be opened using older versions of the same
programs and that a set of conversion utilities is required. As more and
more individuals and businesses switch to the new Office 2007 suite, there
will be an increasing need to be able to open documents created using it.
These utilities can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site at the
following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466displaylang=en

Note that Microsoft requires system validation before you can download most
items. If your system has never been validated, you may have to first
install the validation software.

Do you really mean that you have to open Windows Explorer? You said FTP
Explorer.

If so, when you have the program selected in Windows Explorer, press ALT+F;
then press the letter n; then arrow to Desktop (create shortcut) and press
ENTER. This will place a shortcut on the desktop to that program. You may
want to edit the shortcut--sometimes, they will say Shortcut to program
name and you might want to change this to something more meaningful. If
so, select the desktop entry and press F2 to edit the wording.

[JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

Not necessarily an important link, but a link where the text simply includes
a bullet. In HTML, you can create two types of standard lists--ordered lists
and unordered lists. An ordered list has the items numbered (1. 2. 3. etc.)
and is intended to be used whenever there's a process that must be performed
in order--do this step first, then do the second, etc. An unordered list is
simply any other kind of list and in HTML, these list items are bulleted.
What you're seeing is a situation where the HTML author has placed items in
an unordered list and one or more of these items are links. You probably
should have heard JAWS announce that this was a list before it proceeded to
read the individual items. It's unfortunate that HTML doesn't allow for a
third type of standard list--a list in which the items are neither numbered
nor bulleted--but it doesn't.

[JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

Which is why I said that it's unfortunate that HTML doesn't have a list
format that doesn't use them. As an old author of user documentation, I find
it especially objectionable on web pages to not have what we used to call
simple lists; that is, lists with no highlighting or emphasis on the
individual items. They're merely attention-grabbers for sighted readers and
in the spirit of informing the blind user of everything that a sighted
reader would see, they're announced. My guess; and it's just that; is that
in HTML, there's no easy way to indicate that something is a list as opposed
to continuing text, so they're used.

Okay, we have a good idea of what a bullet is. Now the question is, why
are they used. Bullet marks -- or any non-ordering item identifier -- are
extremely visual devices to indicate that a new item in a list is following.
Identifiers such as numbers or letters might indicate some sense of priority
while a bullet simply says here's another list item among equals.

[JAWS-Users] Re: What does bullet mean?

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

Nothing. You'd see something like the following:

Here is a list:

List item 1
List item 2
List item 3

Note that the three items are indented in the above example.

When I worked at IBM and wrote manuals there, we used a fairly nice document
composer that used tags very much like HTML (in fact, this application was
the template on which HTML was originally designed). It had three types of
lists: ordered, unordered, and simple.

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS scripts for super dvd creator

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

I've never heard of this program and can just about guarantee you that there
are no such scripts.

You can search for JAWS scripts by doing a Google search. Enclose the
program name inside quotation marks and then also add the two words JAWS and
script to the search string. For example, for the program you mention here,
use something like:

super dvd creator jaws script

You need to be sure that you have the program name exactly correct--that is,
with any spaces that are either included or not in the program name.

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

Absolutely not and people misuse the definition list all the time. The
purpose of the definition list is just that--to provide definitions in a
glossary. The tags in the definition list are dd:, which is the data
definition tag; and the dl: tag, which is the list item, itself. What you
will often see is people using the dl: tag for the item they want shown as a
list item and then, leaving the dd: tag empty, but this is _not_ correct use
of the definition list tag.

Do you mean the Toolbar or the Status Bar? I don't know how you're seeing
the number of read and unread messages on the Toolbar.

On the assumption that you meant the Status Bar (announced with
INSERT+PgDn), I think this is working as designed. If you change it for a
mail folder that you've created, that setting is retained, but the Inbox is
not controlled by that setting--you have to set it separately and once you
do, it _should_ stay set. I just tested this theory and it works on my
system.

outlook express will show 13 messages 0 unread but when i hide the read

[JAWS-Users] Re: trouble with a tool bar

2007-01-09 Thread Walt Smith

Sarah -

I suspect very strongly that this is an Outlook Express problem, not a JAWS
problem. The issue seems to be that a lot of add-ins that create new Toolbar
entries destroy the ability of the setting that controls the ability to see
only unread messages, just as we saw with that anti spam application. The
only way that I know to verify this would be to have a sighted person stand
by while you open Outlook Express without JAWS running and then see if the
behavior is the same as it is when JAWS is running. Since JAWS has no way of
controlling what is or is not displayed in any application, I can't believe
that it can possibly be a JAWS issue at all.

[JAWS-Users] Can't see folder information (was Need some help,)

This almost certainly has to do with what program is on top. I second the
suggestion to minimize some of those applications. This is just something

[JAWS-Users] Re: Adobe Reader 8 and JAWS

2007-01-12 Thread Walt Smith

Just remember that while Adobe Reader does have accessibility _settings_,
the screen access technology companies still have to make their individual
programs work with it.

The problem with using Acrobat Reader 8 with JAWS 6.2 may be that JAWS 6.2
wasn't around at the time of; and, hence, couldn't be tested with; Acrobat
Reader 8. This is not true of JAWS 8.0.

I get concerned about people who don't keep their screen access systems
current because of the cost, yet who insist on installing the very latest
versions of some utility or other because it's free. In effect, this is just
asking for trouble, since the screen access system simply can't be expected
to work with programs that were developed years after it came on the market,
nor should it be. The single most important program you have on your
computer after the operating system is your version of JAWS and either keep
it as current as possible or don't add anything new to your computer and
then expect an old version of JAWS to work with the new program.

1. Open the submenu you want to sort. I'm pretty sure that you have to do

2. Press the Applications key. Press UP ARROW twice until you hear Sort by

There is a registry hack that will sort _all_ of your Favorites and submenus

Something really strange about Jaws Version 8 and Outlook Express. Many

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws and sleep mode

2007-01-18 Thread Walt Smith

While this is more or less a moot point now, since you've removed the game,
here's something to remember in the future.

You went about silencing JAWS in the wrong way to begin with. What you
really _should_ have done was to load the game, then open the Configuration
Manager. JAWS would have prompted you by telling you that a new
configuration file was being created. The proper thing to do here is to
press the OK button. Then, when the file opens, press ALT+S to open the
Settings menu and press the letter A to open the Advanced options. The first
item on this page is the Sleep Mode Enable check box. Check it by pressing
the SPACEBAR. Then, press CTRL+S to save and ALT+F4 to exit the
Configuration Manager.

In the future, when you start your game, JAWS will automatically be
siolenced. Any time you either quit the game or use ALT+TAB to move away
from it, speech will automatically return.

[JAWS-Users] Re: sample note pad script

2007-01-18 Thread Walt Smith

As I pointed out to David off-list (and, with his encouragement, I repost
here), this is actually backwards. While it very well may (quite likely
will) work 99.9% of the time, good scripting practice says that you should
always place a function ahead of the first place in the .jss file where the
function is called. Thus, the order should be:

void Function AutoMaximize ()
var string StatusSymbol
SaveCursor ()
FindGraphic (GetAppMainWindow (GetCurrentWindow ()), maximize symbol,
s_top, s_unrestricted)

let StatusSymbol=GetWord()
If StatusSymbol == Maximize Symbol Then
   LeftMouseButton ()
EndIf
RestoreCursor ()
Pause()
EndFunction

Void Function AutoStartEvent ()
AutoMaximize ()
EndFunction

Also, it's no longer really required that the ResporeCursor () function be
called after a SaveCursor () function or a function that changes the cursor
from one type to another is issued. The EndScript now forces this to occur.
Including it won't hurt anything, but it's just a line of superfluous code.

let StatusSymbol=GetWord()

LeftMouseButton ()
EndIf
RestoreCursor ()
Pause()
EndFunction

Everything above this line of text if placed in your note pad script file
will serve to automatically maximize note pad everytime it is open or gains
focus. Well at least it works on my system your results may vary, enjoy
experimenting with it. I picked note pad because there's nothing you can do
to hurt it under normal conditions.

Sapi 5 volume can be turned down a little so it will be about the same as
Eloquence? That way I
won't have to keep adjusting my volume knob on my speakers. I know...I'm
lazy!

See ya,
Scooter

[JAWS-Users] a Deleting question

2007-01-19 Thread Walt Smith

Use the Delete key, do not use SHIFT+DEL, which is what you are using now.

On more than half my emails, when attempting to delete, I get an error sound
and the question: Are you sure you want to permanently delete these
messages?
I have been given some suggestions, but so far, none have resolved this
problem.

Help Please,
Suzy

[JAWS-Users] Re: a Deleting question

2007-01-19 Thread Walt Smith

If you're saying that all you pressed was the Delete key and you got that
message, you either need to reboot your computer or think about getting a
new keyboard, since the operating system thinks that the SHIFT key is being
pressed and if you're not pressing it deliberately, something else is wrong.

No, I have only tried that with no luck after the delete key didn't work.
