Just found PIECEWORK's annual lace issue.  WOW!!!  Lace from cover to

incredible.  And Carolyn Wetzel has a great tutorial on Frisado de Valladolid
needlelace.
Have to go buy my own copy.

I own one of the pieces shown in the article... the woman with the sheaves
of grain in the article, as well as another one of a woman looking out a
window.

The lace is painted...I think with acrylic paint. There used to be an
interview with her where it showed her lace in the various stages. Tried to
find it, but the link to it doesn't work anymore.

I love her work! Saving up for another piece, but they go fast these days.
She's getting too popular. ; )

[lace] Winding bobbins with a string

2017-07-12 Thread Witchy Woman
Hi Susan...
I haven't tried it any other way than what I posted.
The way I posted, you wind your bobbins clockwise, and the string goes around
the bobbin counter-clockwise.
Perhaps setting the bobbin under the string and bringing it around clockwise
would work to wind the bobbin counter-clockwise.
Have to try it when I get home from work.  Let me know how your experiments
work.

I am a daily lurker, but don't get to post very often.

also specify types of lace...i.e. Tonder.

[lace] Sari silk yarn question

2016-01-31 Thread Witchy Woman
I am a daily lurker on Arachne. It's not very often that I have time to
post. I always enjoy what I read, and have learned so much. A special
thanks to Geri for her input on conservation.which I always print out and
save. The recent thread on blocking a silk scarf prompted this question.

Over the past year or two I bought recycled sari silk yarn from Darn Good
Yarn (http://www.darngoodyarn.com/) to make a lace scarf or wall hanging.
The colors are brilliant turquoise, and a beautiful, deep emerald green.

The yarns are made by collectives in India and Nepal, and are handspun and
hand dyed from recycled silk saris and sari remnants. It has been my
experience in the past that the fabrics from those areas of the world have a
tendency to not be colorfast, and tend to bleed onto everything around them
when wet. I would like to prewash the yarn before I use it to wash out the
excess dye.

When I have dyed cotton fabric in the past, I used vinegar to set the dye.
I'm not sure whether this can be done with silk.

As an experiment I have filled the sink with water and let the yarn hank
soak, drain, rinse, repeat.alternating lukewarm water with cold water.
After 5 repeats, the water is still showing dye. I don't want to keep it
wet for too long since the silk is more fragile when it's wet.

Would a little bit of vinegar be OK? Any other ideas on how to set the dye?

Thanks.

[lace] What size thread?

2015-11-05 Thread Witchy Woman
Never found the source of the bobbin lace angel on TatMan's blog, so I drafted
out the pattern and would like to start to wind bobbins.   But the question
is,  what size thread?

I drafted it at the same size as the picture on
http://tat-man.net/blog/?p=1210. Approximately 3 inches tall.

I changed it
slightly into more of a tape lace once you get past the head.  Using half
stitch and cloth stitch for  the head and face,  and Hinojosa kernel stitch
for the headband.  Will probably use Hinojosa or Milanese braids for the body
and wings.  Figuring those out now.

Any ideas?

[lace] New book..DIE LETZTEN IHRER ART...is beautiful!

2015-09-17 Thread Witchy Woman
Saved my pennies and splurged on a wonderful book called DIE LETZTEN IHRER
ART. It's about types of laces made in the former Sudetenland after the
war, and it's a beautiful book

The style of the lace in the book, to me, looks like a cross between Idrija
and Lepoglava laces.the winding cloth stitch of the Idrija which suddenly
blossoms into the half-stitch shading of the Lepoglava laces.

It was pricey, but I figured there are about 80 patterns in the book, and it
works out to about $1 per pattern. [Blatant rationalization]

My time to make lace has been severely limited of late. I've decided to
concentrate on tape laces.easily portable, and not a lot of bobbins to keep
track of. Just wish there were more hours in the day. SIGH

[lace] Slovenian lacemaker story - not Croatian

I have spent the past week reading the diaries of Anton Zakelj. Fascinating

There are many entries in the diaries about lacemaking. He and his brother

living in a refugee camp.  From what I have read of the 1947 diary, women in
the camp were lacemakers.  I think he also designed lace...there are a few
patterns.  Can't wait to get home and read more.

RE: [lace] Smoke smell in books

2015-06-29 Thread Witchy Woman
Hi Malvary,

Beloved was an archivist for many years, and said most of the advice given
is sound.

Fresh air is the best. Keep the book open and flip the pages every few
days. Make sure it's in a place that has low humidity. He liked the idea
of the fan close by to keep the air moving.

Another way is to put it in a closed container with a dish of baking soda or
activated charcoal. Change the baking soda or activated charcoal regularly.
Again, page flipping is recommended.

I would be careful with herbs.lavender flowers can be slightly oily. Test
the herbs by laying them on a piece of paper first.

All of these take time and patience.

Good luck!

re: [lace] Bolster pillow

2015-05-16 Thread Witchy Woman
Susan,

A few years ago I made a bolster pillow out of ethafoam. It worked
beautifully.

Start with an ethafoam pool noodle.make sure it's hollow. With a razor
knife, cut a piece as long as you want the bolster to be.

Home Depot sells rolls of ethafoam sheet underlayment.the brand is
TrafficMaster and it's in the flooring department.100 square feet for about
$25. The roll is about 4' wide.

Without unrolling it, take a razor knife, and cut the roll of underlayment
into pieces the same length as the pool noodle.

Once the underlayment is cut, unroll the sections, and roll them around the
pool noodle until the bolster is as big around as you would like it.

I used pins at the very edges to hold it in place once it was wrapped.

Next layer was a roll of felted wool.I bought a beat up wool coat for a few
bucks at the thrift store.washed it in hot water and dried in a hot dryer to
shrink it.

Cover with a cotton cover.

The bolster will be very light, so you'll need to weight it down to keep it
from moving around. I put 3 rolls of quarters in the hollow center of the
pool noodle. It worked beautifully. And I have change handy if I need it.
; )

I use one of those cheap plastic shoeboxes as a stand.

I hope this makes sense.

Mariña's book published a few years ago was on Hinojosa lace,
which is related to but not exactly the same as Candida's lace. It was
distributed by Holly in the US but whether there are any copies left anywhere
is another matter, certainly all the UK ones were sold.

As far as I have
heard, the new book isn't yet published.

If anyone is interested, there is
still time to book one of the last places in Mariña's class at The Lace Guild
summer school in August.  Details on our website www.laceguild.org.

[lace] Candida's lace

2015-05-01 Thread Witchy Woman
I have been an avid lurker for the better part of the past year.  Spent most
of that time getting my house ready to sell.  It sold, and I'm now in my new
abode...digging myself out. Most of the boxes should be labeled "what the heck
did I bring this for?".

I wasn't able to make it to Ithaca last October, so
I missed Marina's Candida's lace class.

A few years ago she mentioned she
would be publishing a book on Candida's Lace.  Does anyone know if this is in
the works?

[lace] Singing Tree pattern

2014-08-11 Thread Witchy Woman
Haven't posted for a while, but I read the on-line archive every day.  Making
lace vicariously through you all...still working on getting my house ready to
sell, and still not working on my own lace.  SIGH

I recently came upon a
pattern of Vologda lace on the internet called "The Singing Tree" by Victoria
Elfina.  There's a small pic of it if you scroll down to the bottom of this
page...  http://www.artrusse.ca/lace.htm

Does anyone know if this pattern is
available anywhere?  From what I've read, Victoria was a lace designer at the
Vologda lace factory, but that's about all I've been able to come up with.
Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

[lace] Spiral binding

2014-01-08 Thread Witchy Woman
Happy New Year, everyone!
I like the idea of spiral binding when it comes to
being able to open the book to work from it or to copy a pattern.
I also see
the problems with not being able to see what the book is.  We use binding
systems at work, so I'm somewhat familiar with them.  You don't always need
to use a clear plastic cover page.  We use sheets that are a little heavier
than card stock that wear very well.
I've taken a few of my pattern books to
OfficeMax.  For a few dollars they'll punch and bind them either spiral or
regular combs.  So if the digital printer can't do spiral binding there's
always an outside option.

[lace] A4 binders

2014-01-08 Thread Witchy Woman
For US lacemakers...
A good source for A4 binders is Amazon.  Wilson-Jones is
the brand I've purchased.  They're sturdy and well-made and have pockets.
Ulrike's Torchon series fits in the 2" binder.  The 1" isn't quite big enough.
Another source is Staples.  They have them on-line, but you might be able to
go into a store and ask them to order it for you...it may prevent having to
pay shipping.

[lace] re pricey lace books

2013-11-07 Thread Witchy Woman
I had an experience recently on Amazon while looking for a copy of Geometrical
Bucks Point. They had a copy listed for $2,465.00. I sent the seller a message
asking about it. THey said it was a glitch with Amazon and they were trying to
take it off the listings. Exchanged a few more emails with them...they still
haven't been able t take it down even though they no longer have the book.

Had another experience with reticella books with prices in the thousands.
Again it was a problem with Amazon's system...it changed the decimal. They
corrected it and I bought them.

I have also noticed that Amazon' prices can change from day to day. It is not
the seller doing this. It is Amazon.

[lace] Needle lace pattern done

2013-07-31 Thread Witchy Woman
A few months ago I posted a link to a picture I found at the Cleveland Museum
of Art that had incredible lace detail.  The picture is Portrait of a Woman by
Cornelis Janssen van Ceulen.  (Google it and find the Wikimedia page...you'll
be able to zoom in on the picture.)  Thanks to the help of people on this list
we figured out that the lace was probably Punto in Aria.

I thought it would
be nice to sit in the Museum, near her picture, and be able to make the same
lace that she's wearing.  So this past week, armed with print outs of the lace
in various enlargements, I sat down with my compass, protractor, and graph
paper and came up with a pattern for the two motifs in the center section of
the collar.  I'm working on the pattern for the edging now.

The next step is
to figure out how to set up the foundation threads...very steep learning curve
here.  I'm sure I'll be asking questions when the time comeshere and on
the Needlelace Ning site.

I had been thinking of wearing a costume, and
having everything authentic.  I read they used parchment as the base.  Any
ideas where I can find some heavy enough to use for this purpose?  All I've
been able to find is either the kind you cook with, or parchment paper for
calligraphy.

I'm enjoying this creative streak very much!

RE: [lace] kindle lace books?

2013-05-22 Thread Witchy Woman
Finally had a chance to sit down and comment on this past week's thread on
Kindles.

Love my Kindle because I have problems with my neck, and carrying large, heavy
books around makes it hurt.  I have the old keyboard style.  Haven't upgraded
to
Fire and don't have a tablet, so I can't vouch for how they  work.

on 5/20 Lyn wrote:

"...How difficult is it to take the paper copy of the pricking or diagram and
put it on the kindle/device? Or vice versa, kindle/device to paper pricking."

The first part is easy, and Diane and Anna already answered it.  However, on
the
plain old Kindles you're limited to black and white, so take it into
consideration when you scan.

As for the vice-versa part, it depends on the file itself.  Most of the books
you buy from Amazon, etc, are DRM protected.  DRM stands for Digital Rights
Management and is supposed to protect the book from being illegally copied,
etc.  That means you can't print out pages, which would be prohibitive if a
lace book had prickings/patterns.  Some of the print-on-demand sites that offer
e-books, like LULU.com, have stopped using DRM.  Unfortunately they don't have
lace books with patterns.

I've had problems with .pdf files on my Kindle.  They only show you the whole
page, and the text doesn't wrap.  So if I zoom in, I end up having to read the
first part of the line, then click to move the screen to the second part of the
line, then back to read the beginning of the next line.  Maddening!

The fix for this problem came with a great freeware program called
Calibre...Suzy Johnson mentioned it in one of her posts.  It can convert
non-DRM
files from one format to anotherquite a few, in fact.  I had downloaded
some
old lace books in .pdf format from the cs.arizona fabric archives, and couldn't
read them on the Kindle.  With Calibre I converted them from .pdf to .mobi, and
was able to read them.

Calibre also converts Word documents and Excel spreadsheets to .mobi format...I
now have the inventory of my lace library at hand when I go to lace events.
There's a lot more the program can do.  Google them for more info.

Lyn wrote:
"And, how difficult would it be to turn a popular but out of print lacebook
into
a kindle/device edition? Could you get a pricking from such a version?"

I think that would depend on how old the book was and whether the publisher had
it in an electronic form like a Word document format...piece-o-cake to convert
to an e-book version.  Older books may have to be set up from square one.
Whether you'd be allowed to print, again, would depend on whether they added
DRM
protection to the file.

I hope that today's authors of lace books would look into
self-publishing...particularly publishing on demand.  That way they can control
the publication of their books.  I want to scream when I see the prices on some
of these out-of-print books.  I would rather pay the author.  (OK...off
soapbox...)

I recently bought an LED light bulb that's the equivalent of at 60 watt bulb
that I used in the bedroom for reading.  It's shaped like a regular light
bulb...here's a link...

I'm happy with it.  The light isn't cold like a flourescent, and of course,
there's the savings on the electric bill.  The only bad thing was the cost of

[lace] RE: participation in Lace conferences

2013-05-01 Thread Witchy Woman
There have been a few posts about airfares and how expensive they can be. The
New York Times ran an article on how to save money on fares.

Check out flights that have more than one stop, with one stop being your actual
destination...i.e. this year's IOLI convention.  Say you live in Cleveland,
OH, find a flight with one stop in Salt Lake City, then it goes on to San
Francisco.  Sometimes you'll find that booking a 1 stop flight from Cleveland
to
San Francisco is a lot cheaper than a flight from Cleveland to Salt Lake City.

[lace] Lacemaker's lament

2013-04-11 Thread Witchy Woman
I was looking for information on punto in aria lace, and came upon this
poignant
gem...

Punto in Aria: The Lace-Maker's Lament*
By Mary Rohrer-Dann

>From her needle, butterflies tumble,
lilies unfurl, willows bend and lift
to the nightingale’s voiceless song.

Had the pox not shut her ears, her fingers
might have played that silver reed whose highest pitch
at times unstitches the silence that cocoons her.

Instead, she works from first light until night
swallows day, then falls into bed, eyes burning,
wrists aching, fingertips thickened with toil.

She will never know how her work enchants.
Her roses decant their scent for strangers;
the stag her fingers fashion bounds away.

While the lace-merchant counts his riches, the spent
lace-maker plummets to sleep, and dreams of birds
that slip their knots, escape into unstitched air.

[lace] What kind of lace is this?

2013-04-07 Thread Witchy Woman
Yesterday Beloved and I went to the Cleveland Museum of Art.  They have been
remodeling for the past few years and little by little are opening new
sections,
and revamping their displys.  As we wandered the galleries I looked for
pictures
with lace in them.  Unfortunately, a lot of the pictures that have detailed
lace
are no longer on exhibit.

I did find one picture with beautiful lace..."Portrait of a Woman" by Cornelis
Janssen van Ceulen, painted in 1619.  I think it's Reticella, but not sure.  My
plan is to take a small pillow and work on lace near her picture.  I want to
make sure I have the right name for the lace.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portrait_of_a_Woman_by_Cornelius_Janssen_van_Ceulen,_1619_-_Cleveland_Museum_of_Art_-_DSC08862.JPG

Once you get on the page, click on the picture.  When it opens in the next
window click on it again to enlarge it to see the detail of the lace.  The
picture is beautiful, and this reproduction doesn't do it justice.  There's a
sheen to the painting that makes the lace glow.

I did some further checking on the artist, Cornelis Janssen van Ceulen.  Go
into
Google's Images page and use his name as a search.  I was blown away by the
beautiful lace in his paintings...the detail is amazing!

[lace] storm aftermath in ohio

2012-11-01 Thread Witchy Woman
hi everyone
it has been raining since last friday.  temps have been in mid-40f range since
then.  we lost power aome time around 1 a.m. tuesday morning...when i left for
work this morning it was still out.
luckily we have lots of candles.  beloved's water gas heater is an old one and
doesn't rely on electricity to work so we have hot showers...one thing i am
eternally grateful for.  there is a working fireplace...lots of wood in the
garage...and a gas stove so we can keep warm and eat.  luckily all of my
camping gear from my recent trip to ithaca is at hand..led flashlights are
wonderful.  and the person who invented polar fleece has my undying
gratitude.
lacemaking lore came in handy.  rigged up a variarion on a lacemaker's lamp
with stemless wineglasses filled with water and a votive candle.
weird thing is thatt everyon across the street never lost power.  power
company on tuesday said three to five days before service is restored.  while
this has been a fun adventure i am hoping to come home to lights tonight.
pegat work in cleveland oh where there is light and heat

[lace] Dabbling in lace

2012-10-11 Thread Witchy Woman
I had the wonderful experience of taking a class in Hinojosa Lace from Marina
Regueiro at Ithaca Lace Days this past weekend.  Not only was she a good
teacher, but she was also a wonderful storyteller.  It makes the lace come
alive
when you know its stories and history.

It occurred to me that I'm
actually not all that good at making lace.  I tend to
dabble...do a small
piece of this type and another piece of that type.  I really
don't have a
mastery of any one type.

I very much enjoyed the class and I like making tape
laces...portable and
the smaller number of bobbins are easier to manage.  I
have decided to spend the
next year learning Hinojosa, working with it,
concentrating on only this type so
I can say that there is at least one type
of lace that I'm good at.

No more dabbling...at least for the time being.

Re: [lace] Ethafoam density

2012-09-11 Thread Witchy Woman
Hi Robin,

I made a block pillow out of ethafoam planks from Hollister Metal
Edge, an
archival supply house...it's the dense kind that they use for
archival
storage...2.2 lbs/cubic foot.  The pins go in easily and are held
firmly.

The planks I bought are white.  I also have a chunk of blue
from packaging,
which is a little less dense.  And I have some that is
even less dense that I
got from the IT guys at work...packaging from
computers.  The archival kind
seems to self-heal better and doesn't break
down.

Hope this helps.

Help!

I want to order some ethafoam for 2 projects.  One is
I want to make a

I've been told
the heaviest is really hard to pin into, but when I went online
I found not
2 or 3 choices, but like 6 density choices.  Is it worth buying a

Thanks a

[lace] Rembrandt and lace

them...there were
more exhibited that are not included here.

It was such a pleasure to see the
detail of the lace in his paintings.
Amazing!  It was all I could do to keep
from running home, getting my lace
pillow, and setting it up near one of the
paintings to demonstrate how it was

healing well, keeps me away from things

Your post is going to be printed out and put in my "essential lace info"
folder.  You're right about the information not finding a permanent home in my
brain...there was so much to learn and remember.

I think you're right about
the threads untwisting as I worked.  I tried to
retwist...when I could
remember.  Problem was some had worn down to 1 ply by the
time I got to the
end.  I did use your sewing technique, but the thread was just
too fragile.
As your Milanese student, I would like to say you are a great teacher and I
hope
you come back to Ithaca soon.  I learned so much, but realize there is
also so
much more to learn.

As Peg's teacher for the Milanese class I'd like to say a
couple of things.

I suspect the threads weren't 'wearing out', just
untwisting. This was one of
the things I told the class to watch out for (and
if they saw it happening to
retwist any affected threads), but I was giving
out a lot of information at
Ithaca and not all of it finds a permanent home
in every brain.

Re: [lace] Thread problem

2012-01-07 Thread Witchy Woman
Oops...sorry...I wrote that late last night.  The size was Brok 30.  It was a
new spool and I keep them in a sealed polypropelyne container and wrapped in
acid free tissue.

There weren't any sewings on this piece, but the twist did
loosen as I was
working.  I tried to re-twist when I saw them loosen.
Just got Springett's MAGIC THREADS book at Ithaca...haven't read all the way
through it yet.  I've used the technique when I made one of the ornaments from
her Christmas books.  I didn't think to set up the threads for the class
piece...wanted to jump right in and get started working.

I like the beeswax
idea for the passives.  Since I do tape laces right now, it
wouldn't be all
that tedious.  I've got a chunk around here somewhere.

Thanks.

Is there a size 40 Brok?  If so
I haven't seen it.

I think that your problem is possibly a combination of the
things already
suggested; excessive wear on the thread from making lots of
sewings and the
bobbins rolling to loosen the twist.  Use a magic thread and
keep watching for
any leash that looks as though it is untwisting.  If it is
only the worker
threads which are suffering you could try running those
threads through beeswax
as you wind the bobbins - a bit tedious to do for all
the pairs though.

[lace] Thread problem

2012-01-06 Thread Witchy Woman
When I finished the Isis Heart piece I started during my Milanese class in
Ithaca I had a problem with the passive threads.  By the time I got to the end
of the piece they were seriously fraying.  I was using Brok cotton...I think
size 40.  This made a smooth and invisible join pretty much impossible.  3
threads were so fragile they broke when I did the sewing...pulling it
gently through the loop with a fine crochet hook was enough to make it break.
And I made sure the thread was fully around the hook before I pulled.

I've
had problems before with threads fraying by the time I get to the end of a
piece.  On these pieces I had a combination of cotton passives and metallic
passives and weavers.  I had assumed the fraying was because the metallics are
a
bit abrasive and wore away the cotton threads as I tensioned them.  But the
Isis
Heart piece was all one type of thread, and the thread was fairly new.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a common problem?

[lace] Lace in fiction

2011-12-14 Thread Witchy Woman
Look into the lace When the eyes begin to fill with tears
and the
patience is long exhausted, there will appear a glimpse
of something not
quite seen In this moment, an image will
begin to form...in the space
between what is real and what is
only imagined.
     by Brunonia Barry

This is from THE LACE READER.  I've had
moments like that when working on lace.
The world goes away, and there are
just my hands, the threads and the sound of
the bobbins.  It's so miraculous
sometimes...watching the pattern form.  And
there's always the feeling
of having created beauty after a piece is done.  It
truly is magic.

Started
reading THE LACE MAKERS OF GLENMARA the other day.  Enjoying that book,
too.
It occurred to me that both books use lacemaking as a tool for working through
pain and to find healing of heart and spirit.

[lace] Lace on the brain

2011-12-09 Thread Witchy Woman
Walking through Big Lots...a closeout store...yesterday.  Saw some molded
plastic cases for storing Christmas ornaments...molded to hold 12 balls, with
a
snap-shut cover.  Brain slipped into lace mode.  What a great storage case
for
thread that comes in balls!

Been working on needle tatting over the past
3 weeks.  Steep learning curve, but
it's progressing.  To me, it's an instant
gratification form of lace...doesn't
take as long as the inch-an-hour bobbin
lace.  Easy to work on on the bus...just
have to make sure I sit next to a
window so my needle hand isn't pointing toward
anyone.  ; )

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about SCMR's.  Found out that
they're the same as a ring done off the ball.  The learning curve is steep,

I'm climbing...

Working on TotusMel's necklace, learning split rings and
Josephine chains.  I
like the fact that her tutorials also yield a very
pretty piece of wearable art.

Spent some time on the internet the other

came across a piece of needle tatting

They ask you to

[lace] Needle tatting - self-closing mock ring - HELP!!!

2011-11-27 Thread Witchy Woman
A while ago on Arachne there was a thread on needle tatting.  I tried shuttle
tatting, but my hands just can't do it.

Picked up Barbara Foster's LEARN
NEEDLE TATTING STEP-BY-STEP and last week set
out to try it.  Companioned
with TotusMel's videos and how-to's on
Instructables.com,  I was successful
with the basics...after a few tries, that
is.  I am enjoying this very much.
It goes quickly, it's very portable, and the
results are beautiful.  I made
TotusMel's medallion during coffee hour after
church this morning...amazed at
how fast it went.

Spent a few hours perusing the internet for snowflake
patterns, and found one
that I like, but it uses something called a
self-closing mock ring in the
pattern.  Of course, there is nothing in the
book I have showing how to do
this.  And nothing on the internet showing how
to do SCMR in needle tatting.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

[lace] Lace in ANOMYMOUS

2011-11-13 Thread Witchy Woman
Beloved and I both had a day off on Friday so we went to the movies to see
ANONYMOUS.  It was an interesting movie about whether Shakespeare actually
wrote
his plays.  While it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, it was pure
eye candy
as period pieces go.

I found myself focusing at the laces on the
clothes.  Granted, I'm not an
expert, but it was good to see that they seemed
to be fairly accurate in most of
their in their choices.  Found myself saying
"this one looks like a needle lace"
or "that could have been done with
bobbins".  It was interesting, too, to see
the laces not only in white, but
in colors.

Tried to find some pictures on the movie's site, but the laces
are not shown in
good detail.  I guess you have to see it on the big screen
to appreciate it.

[lace] A lace fence

2011-11-01 Thread Witchy Woman
Picked up a book from the Library called LACE IN TRANSLATION. Very cool lace
that people have made using different techniques and materials.

My favorite is the lace fence...

http://www.lacefence.com/

It's bobbin lace made with wire, with chain link fencing used for the ground.
The book showed the panels being made in a workshop in India by constructions
workers. Interesting story. What started as an art installation has grown
into a business.

To see more panels go into Yahoo or Google's Image tab and type in "lace fence

Re: [lace] diagrams

2011-10-29 Thread Witchy Woman
I learned to make lace in the mid-90's.  The syllabus my teacher, Lynn, used
to
teach lace was put together by Arlene McKinnell and spelled out each cross
and
twist.  It wasn't until the 6th lesson that she brought out the
diagrams.  That
lesson had the piece both spelled out in CT by Arlene, and
Lynn's own
hand-colored diagram.  It was confusing for all of 5 minutes.
>From the 6th
minute on I preferred the diagrams.

One of the things that
threw me when I took  it up again was the books I had
with colored diagrams
in them.  I'm thinking in particular of the version I
have of THE BOBBIN LACE
MANUAL by Stott.  The diagrams are in red and blue, and
I couldn't figure out
why the lace wasn't coming out like the picture.  The
colors in that book
don't correspond to the system as we know it know.  So it's
a good idea to be
aware of when the book was published.

Tracy at The Lacemaker Shop had a
very cool lace sampler piece that you work in
color, the color of each
section done in the color that the diagrams currently
use...i.e. red = CTCT,
green=CT, etc.  Burns the colors into your brain as you
work each section.

Wow!  After reading these horror stories, I feel doubly blessed to have had

There were supposed to be two of us in the class,

out due to having to work.  So I got the benefit
of having a one-on-one
experience.  My teacher, Lynn Swedenborg, was in the
middle of chemo treatments,
and didn't always feel good, but she was always
patient.  Sad thing is she died
of uterine cancer shortly after I finished my
last lesson.  It amazed me how,
after not working on lace for over 10 years,
I still retained most of what she
taught me.

bobbins for
it today.  Also setting up my smaller pillow for a Christmas

My next big project, after the

Re: [lace] Re: lace at jury duty

2011-10-29 Thread Witchy Woman
I was on jury duty about 6 years ago, and brought my lace with me.  At that
point, I hadn't touched it for literally 10 years...spent most of my time
undoing the mistakes I kept making, rather than progressing.  But it was fun.
I
didn't have scissors, as I was in the middle of a piece, so didn't have
problems
with guards, etc.

I made the pillow it was on so it would fit on
one of those nylon exercise bags
that people take to the gym...a neon lime
green with a Gloria Vanderbilt label,
no less...on sale at Big Lots for
$15.00.  That way I could just put the lace in
the bag and take it wherever I
went during the jury selection process.  Luckily
I wasn't chosen for a jury,
so I had a lot of time to play.

I had a few good conversations about what
lacemaking and I was doing (or
undoing, in this case).

[lace] Inspiration

2011-10-19 Thread Witchy Woman
All of the recent messages about young lacemakers got me thinking...and
inspired. It's all about going public with lace.

Most of my lacemaking is done during my lunch hour. In the summer I take it
and sit in the reading garden of the Library. I've enjoyed the comments and
conversations the lacemaking has engendered.

The Library is my lunchtime refuge even in the cold weather. I usually sit in
the Literature department where the windows are big and the light is perfect.
I think it's time for a move up to the Children's department, where the
windows are just as big and the light is just as perfect. I spent some time
today making up a small brochure called WHAT IS BOBBIN LACE? and was thinking
of bringing a small pillow set up with the fish pattern that Chris mentioned.
There are always parents and kids there during the day, and it might be fun.

I've been talking to the head of the Science and Technology department, which
is where the lace books are housed. She's new to the Library and has been
thinking about picking a subject, showcasing books in their collection, and
having people come in who do the different crafts. She has my name and e-mail
address for when she does fiber arts. I will also talk to the Children's
librarian and see if they have any sort of craft demonstrations.

Thanks for the inspiration, everyone. I just wish I had more time.

[lace] Goth lace

2011-10-17 Thread Witchy Woman
I've been reading the threads about the Steampunk costumes. I've seen
them...very beautiful.

There's also a big market for lace in goth clothing. I don't know if she's
still there, but for a while there was a lacemaker on eBay who specialized in
handmade bobbin laces for goth clothing. The last item I saw was a pair of
lace gloves. I still have the link, but since it's over 90 days old, it's not

There is also the high end cosplay costuming for anime lovers that uses a lot

I've been reading the messages about the demise of Lacy Susan and The
Lacemaker Shop.

I'm particularly sad about The Lacemaker Shop because it's about an hour away
from where I live. While it's nice to order things like thread and bobbins
online, I hesitate to buy books sight unseen. Every time I went there I ended
up spending about double what I had planned, because I was able to look at the
books, and always found at least 2 or 3 more than I had on my list.

The thing that frustrated me most about the store was that it wasn't open very
often. I had thought about organizing a "field trip" with a few people, but
it was a bit frustrating to try and find a day that she was open that was
convenient for everyone. She travelled to various lace days and SCA events.
A good part of her income came from these events.

If it were a few years down the road I would have seriously considered taking
over her business. But life is a little too complicated now. I hope whoever
buys it keeps it in the area.

[lace] Threads on books on demand and data back-up

2011-09-16 Thread Witchy Woman
I've been following these two threads with great interest.  A few things I'd
like to contribute...

I'm hoping that some of the current authors of lace
books are reading this
thread and will consider the things we have talked
about.  As has been already
brought up, I think it's important for the
authors to be able to get the money
that is due to them for their work.  When
books go out of print, the only ones
who profit are the booksellers.

As
to formats, I've purchased books through lulu.com, a print-on-demand site,
and have always been happy with the quality of the books I've received.  I
prefer a hard copy to an electronic copy, and lulu provides both.  BTW, they
currently have a few lace titles available.

On the other hand, I think having
the book available in a pdf formt has a lot of
benefits, too.  The first
being the size.  It can be put on a disk that takes up
a lot less room than a
book.  The second is that instead of trying to photocopy
or scan a pattern,
which subjects the pattern to distortion, I can simply print
out the page.
The third is that you can zoom in and see details better.

As to the idea of
backing up data...

Even though I use them I don't totally trust magnetic
media such as flash
drive/memory sticks or external hard drives.  They seem
to die too easily.  I
always back up on CD's or DVD's, depending on the
size.  There are archival
quality versions that are made to last that use
gold in their dyes and have
scratch resistant surfaces.  A bit more
expensive, but worth it.

I also like the idea of mailing a document to
yourself and storing it in your
web e-mail.  However, be aware that some
sites such as Yahoo will only keep a
few years worth of messages.  They
automatically delete messages over a certain
age..I think it's 3 or 4 years.
My two cents.

Peg
in chilly Fairview Park OH...seems like a few days ago the
Powers-That-Be
flipped the great cosmic season switch and plunged us headlong
into autumn.
Have to dig out the cold weather clothes tomorrow.
