AW: possibility of Server group without load balancer?
You don't need a load balancer to use a server group. But you loose the ability to automatically distribute the workload evenly across your arservers and automatic failover from user's POV. Failover of Escalation, DSO etc. will work as this is a feature of the server group. You have to tell the half of your users to use server A and the other half to use server B, to distribute the workload. Cheers Ben _ From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Lyle Taylor Sent: January 28, 2009 10:32 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement Ben, You said something that I would like clarification on: any attributes (of our hand-constructed classes using default Admin defined field ids) (italics added) Just to be certain I’m understanding things correctly, did you create these classes using the CMDB console using the functionality there for creating classes and adding attributes to them, or did you do any of this work in the Admin tool? While I haven’t added any new classes, I have added a fair number of attributes to existing classes (although we used IDs specified from a specific range of IDs that we were using, rather than letting the system auto-assign IDs), and we never had a problem with the system not bringing these attributes into the sandbox, which is something that I think should be someone analogous to what you’re trying to do in the end. While I’m not an expert on what happens when you use a sample schema, I would expect that the fact that “by ID” is selected, it should bring across all fields with matching IDs regardless of whether or not they’re in the sample schema – which it seem would have to be the case or the majority of the OOB classes would have this same issue. Well, I guess there’s no useful information in the paragraph above. I guess I really just want to confirm that the classes were all created using the CMDB console exclusively, and that any AST forms used to work with those classes were created using the CMDB2Asset utility so that the IDs of the fields on the asset forms and the CMDB forms all match up, regardless of whether they’re OOB or custom. I noticed the part that doesn't make sense but believe it or not I have a reasonable reason for using it. As for auditing, we've had our share of issues with it but are (over) using it. I disabled the delete activity in the Sandbox reconciliation job so that when a CI in Production (Gold?) is touched by a person, I can have our standard reconciliation job basically use the equal Sandbox CI at a higher precedence and then more or less cancel the normal discovered CI in the recon job. When that normal discovered CI has caught up to the human modified CI, in a set of configured fields I might add, then the Sandbox CI is deleted and the CI is no longer human modified and participates in reconciliation updates as normal. I also cannot add an attribute indicating the human modification state to BaseElement. The Sandbox indeed makes no sense whatsoever as implemented with the OOTB workflow. The Updated CI is pushed (supposedly) to the Sandbox, and then immediately reconciled to production AND deleted from Sandbox. Also note the comments about the NULL Option in the OOTB Job. This may be there to cover the issue I encountered below. We now have a ticket with BMC but alas, I am going to have to do something to make it work sooner than I expect a response or a fix. Perhaps the Overlay feature works better? It just does not make sense to have a sandbox that will be immediately reconciled to production dataset. Besides restricting the updates via permissions or field properties, I would add that enabling auditing on the fields that can be updated is a good complement, from a control/audit perspective. So with access control and auditing, you really don't need a sandbox, and you are going to gain a lot in terms of reducing complexity, maintenance, etc. -Guillaume __Platinum Sponsor: RMI Solutions ARSlist: Where the Answers Are

Re: possibility of Server group without load balancer?
That is true but what do you do when one server goes down due to a failure or needs to be taken offline for maintenance for an extended period of time? Without a load balancer you would half to tell the half of your user base on the down server to manually change their configuration to point to the other server and then tell them to point it back when maintenance was done. With a load balancer that would be transparent to the users as a server being down would be detected by the load balancer and all users, who would connect to the load balancer's address and not a specific server, would then be routed only to working servers. Additionally, you could add additional servers to the server group behind the load balancer and users would never know. If you added servers without a load balancer you would have to manually reconfigure the users to balance the load. --- J.T. Depending on what you need, I would create a report on ReportCreator and then add a button to your form to Print this report. Hopefully the Query on the report is easy like 'Ticket ID' = $Ticket Id$ (that they would only need to create a report of the record they are looking at). Running Remedy client User tool as PC user
Dear List, Our university is pushing everyone into doing their PC work as “User”, and only using an “Administrator” account for installing software. But it seems that there are all sorts of features that don’t work right when running the User tool as non-administrator. Adding field to Task table on Change Infrastructure form
I would like to add a field from the TAS:Task form to the task records display on the Change Infrastructure form. I successfully have the field displayed in the form. The data is not transferring. Here is what I have done. The field, Transport #, has been added to forms TMS:AssociationSummaryDataJoin and to TMS:SummaryData (so that it can be used on the TMS:AssociationSummaryDataJoin form). On both forms the field has the permission of Change for Task Process Config, Change for Task User and R/W for Task Viewer. ‘Allow Any User to Submit’ is checked. Fields are Display Type of Edit and Read Write. I’ve given the field Public Permission on the table display (columnar) form. I can’t find anything in an active link or filter log of how the data is transferred. I’ve looked for forms that would perform the same function as the SHR:OverviewConsole form which is used to add a field to the Overview Console. If that is the data transport action I’ve haven’t found it yet. Perhaps I’m trying to bypass some steps. I’ve noticed that on the field properties of the columnar form the field names begin with z2TF. i.e.: When I look at the field properties in the columnar form the field ‘Instance’ from the TMS:AssociationSummaryDataJoin table has a name of z2TF_TaskTGInstance. When I look at the field I’ve added the name is still Transport #. Does anyone know what I am missing? I’m obviously not a developer; just an admin trying to figure out what sounds like something that should be fairly easy to accomplish. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: RMI Solutions ARSlist: Where the Answers Are

Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement - Cause Found - Work-around possible
Hi Guys, Just to report back. Turns out I was staring it in the face for too long. Very simple problem. There are 4 Active Links that do NOT use the by Id Push Fields and are instead hard coded for BMC.CORE:BMC_ComputerSystem. No wonder that the Sandbox Recon job had Defer NULLs on! The Sandbox won't work for most attributes in even OOTB classes. The fix is to replicate these four ALs, once for each class and include all fields except a few core fields much as these work now. There is a better fix because the workflow is convoluted at best and could be simplified. the ALs change a few fields with Set Fields including the dataset id, do the Push Fields the clean the dirty bit and do not save the record. The Push in turn fires more workflow (filters) resulting in a separate push with the filter mentioned below. The ALs in Q are: ASI:SHR:GenericSave_003_CreateModify_EnabledSandBox_NothingInSandbox ASI:SHR:GenericSave_003_CreateModify_EnabledSandBox_SomethingInSandbox ASI:SHR:GenericSave_003_Dialog_EnabledSandBox_NothingInSandbox ASI:SHR:GenericSave_003_Dialog_EnabledSandBox_SomethingInSandbox I will automate the generation of the ALs so that when fields and classes change, the ALs can be maintained. Besides, it would be too much form to map 400+ fields for each of the classes in 4 different ALs the ALs with To make the set of ALs Note the SandBox Enabled enum values in AST:AppSettings (0: Yes, 1: No) and those in the AST z1G SandBox Enabled (10: Yes, 20: No). That was fixed with another AL. Note too that Defer NULLs should NOT be on in the Sandbox Recon job. So indeed, the Sandbox has been problematic, and, of course, there's also the Q of why the Sandbox is there in the first place! Enjoy the weekend. Canned reports for ITSM 7
So, after 10 years of using this product, management here is finally encouraging Managers to get more detailed stats from AR System. I've just been using Excel spreadsheets with the ODBC connector to get stats, but this seems a little challenging for someone who's just a casual user, so I've been digging into the canned reports that come with ITSM 7 to see which I should recommend for which purposes. Re: Adding field to Task table on Change Infrastructure form
Christine, The underlying field on the main form perhaps lacks permission for the user that is trying to view that data from that table field column that you created. Joe From: Christine christineperryi...@yahoo.com To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 2:23:43 PM Subject: Adding field to Task table on Change Infrastructure form I would like to add a field from the TAS:Task form to the task records display on the Change Infrastructure form. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: RMI Solutions ARSlist: Where the Answers Are
Re: Canned reports for ITSM 7
You might take a look at BMC Analytics for BSM. That gives you a set of canned reports on top of Business Objects. Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement - Cause Found - Work-around possible
Thanks for the thorough update Looks like the sandbox was not properly QA'ed !! I'd like to see the test cases the QA tester used on the sandbox. This feature is touted a great deal by BMC sales, so you would think with all the exposure and fanfare, it would be solid and ready for prime time. yeah right -Guillaume From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) on behalf of Ben Chernys Sent: Thu 01/29/09 3:38 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement - Cause Found - Work-around possible ** ? While I haven't added any new classes, I have added a fair number of attributes to existing classes (although we used IDs specified from a specific range of IDs that we were using, rather than letting the system auto-assign IDs), and we never had a problem with the system not bringing these attributes into the sandbox, which is something that I think should be someone analogous to what you're trying to do in the end. While I'm not an expert on what happens when you use a sample schema, I would expect that the fact that by ID is selected, it should bring across all fields with matching IDs regardless of whether or not they're in the sample schema - which it seem would have to be the case or the majority of the OOB classes would have this same issue. Well, I guess there's no useful information in the paragraph above. I guess I really just want to confirm that the classes were all created using the CMDB console

Re: Canned reports for ITSM 7
I just wanted to add that it IS possible to modify the canned reports for ITSM if you have the Crystal client, you can change the design of the report or add new ones. It is also possible to create new reports with the Report interface. Yes, it is clunky and you don't get much more than a report definition in the standard report output format - but it does allow the generation of those reports directly from a piece of workflow. --- On Thu, 1/29/09, William Rentfrow wrentf...@stratacominc.com wrote: From: William Rentfrow wrentf...@stratacominc.com Subject: Re: Canned reports for ITSM 7 To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Date: Thursday, January 29, 2009, 4:28 PM ** I've always regarded the canned reports as suggested starting points for reporting. Re: How to Re Install SLM
What operating system are you installing on? There were numerous issues with installing SLM 7.03 on Solaris especially if you were doing it as non-root. Here are just a few things to check... 1.) Make sure the application is licensed. There was a bug with this but unfortunately I don't remember the specifics 2.) Before you re-install go to /var/tmp and delete any/all logs (or rename/move) from the previous install If it still won't re-install contact BMC support. We had to roll back to our pre-SLM database several times when we were trying to install. Strangely we only ever had problems on 2 of our 4 environments - the other two worked the first time. ARS 7.5 Installers - tales of woe
Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems with the installers for ARS 7.5 ? Here's what's happening: Server: VMWare Windows 2003 Server DB: MSSQL2005 JDK: 1.6.0_06 JRE: 1.6.0_06 You have to make sure the server has a DNS suffix in its name (mine is not a member of a domain), and make sure that MSSQL Native Client Configuration has TCP/IP enabled. The first few attempts, I used the ARSuiteKitWindows installer. When the installer got to offering me the install options, I chose Custom and selected all the components to install except the LDAP integrations, Approval and Assignment engines which I don't need. So I should have had all the clients, AR Server, Mid-Tier, Web Services plugin, and Email engine. I chose to register with portmapper. I tried this a couple of times (fortunately, being on VMWare, I was able to revert to a snapshot of the virgin system) and each time the installers failed to install the portmapper (portmap.exe) so the AR Server couldn't start. (I think there may have been other files also not installed). After the failed installation, the uninstall options did not work (failed to find Class Main). So, then I tried repeating the installation, but not registering with Portmapper. This time the AR Server was not dependent on the missing portmap.exe file, but the installation still failed. The AR Server just would not start. Again the uninstall option (from Control Panel) would not work, so the VM was rolled-back again. I then tried the Minimal Install option (not custom) which installs just the AR Server. Registered with Portmapper, and to my (by now) surprise, it worked. The AR Server was installed, Portmapper was installed and everything seemed to be working. (Took another VM Snapshot at this point !!) Next step - re-run the installer and select the other Server components that I want - Email, Mid-Tier, Web Services Plugin. The installer ran and completed, installed Tomcat (for use with IIS) etc. with no issues. Great I thought. Next step - install the clients including Developer Studio. Run the installer again, choose only the client tools and all apparently completes, so I should be there. but. User Tool - if I set it to use a Preference Server, there don't seem to be any defaults set, so I go through Tools Options and set all the options. OK and log-in again and it hasn't saved them. I can get it to save Flat look on Forms, and a couple of other options, but not much else. Open the User Preferences record in the User Tool and set the options there. A few more 'take' but there are still some that I can't set and save (like ODBC Use Underscores). So, give up on using Preference Server and using the ini file all seems OK. Developer Studio - can't start it - 'The DevStudio executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library'. Tried reinstalling it again from the full installer, and also the client only installer - same result. I didn't have these problems when I tried a beta copy. This looks like one of the most tedious and unreliable installers I've come across in years. Oh, and the uninstall option still doesn't work - Java Virtual Machine Launcher - Could not find the main class. Program will exit. Installing ARS on a windows box used to be a breeze - definitely not now. Has anyone else had more luck? Re: HELP:SLM Application error
I'm pretty sure you can reinstall it if you remove all of its entries from the SHARE:ApplicationProperties form and rename the file folder on the server. I think I have even done that at some point while testing SLM and ITSM together - would have been in 2007 so I don't remember exactly. With no entry for the application in the form, the installer should run. It overwrote all existing objects, as I recall. Your mileage may vary, so get a good db backup snapshot first. I just installed AR 7.5 with all the bells and whistles except for LDAP integration on a Win2K3 VM with no issues at all. I've got JRE/JDK 1.5.0_12, though and not 1.6.0_06. I'm not sure if 1.6 is on the compatibility matrix or not.it _should_ be. I'm also using SQL 2005 and connected using Windows Authentication. What is happening when you try to start the service? Is there anything in the system or application logs on the server? --- J.T. Shyman _ From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of David Sanders Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2009 4:57 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: ARS 7.5 Installers - tales of woe Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems with the installers for ARS 7.5 ? Re: Opening a record through a Mid-Tier URL
Thanks for the info, that worked like a champ. Now I have another strange anomaly happening, as a part of my form, I have a button that takes me to a different tab. I.e.. Using AL's turns tabs on and off. As a part of this Active Link, it is also supposed to Change some Text Fields with the text that is in Character fields on the form. Everything seems to work fine on both views in the User tool, but on the web, it only works correctly on the Default Admin View. My Dialog view does not work in Midtier, but like I said, works fine in the User Tool. Anyone have any ideas? Re: ARS 7.5 Installers - tales of woe
Hi JT The error when AR Server was not installed properly was that a Service that is depends on (Portmapper) failed to start. Looking at the Service definition, the portmapper file (portmap.exe) was not present anywhere on the server. I think the errors I am seeing are related to Java - certainly the uninstall error message is specifically java, and I think the Dev Studio error message is also Java related. Perhaps I'll roll it all back again and replace the JDK 1.6.0_06 with a JDK 1.5 version and see if that helps. Regards. Re: Developer Studio 7.5
Hi, There was a bug in the Developer Studio that prevented the opening of the Permissions Editor dialog. The defect # is SW00317917. This has since been fixed and ported to the 7.5 patch code base. Please contact support with the above defect number to get the status update. The reason why it did not bring up the permission editor dialog is that there may be a group or groups on your Group form where there is no data (NULL) for the Group Category field (Field ID 120). If you can find those groups and fix the value, the dialog will start showing up. Same here, we installed all of the bells and whistles in a Window 2003 VM with SQL 2005 Java 1.6 and Tomcat that come bundled with it. Using RDP to install we were prompted to disable the temp dir flush and tscc.msc settings and reboot before it would continue. I was actually pretty impress with the install (ease, speed, etc). Also check out the uidemo that is on the BMCDN. There are some really nice new features (although some are web only). http://developer.bmc.com/communities/docs/DOC-5969 Jason On Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 3:23 PM, Brien Dieterle brien.diete...@cgcmail.maricopa.edu wrote: ** I *just* finished an install exactly like you (vmware win2003, sql 2005, IIS+Tomcat) except I am on JDK 1.6.0_11-- and absolutely no problems.
