That wasn’t it.  I used the uhf connector port and it’s still swr off the
chart.

Shouldn't I be able to just change the band knob to 430 and it read good SWR?
Do I have to find the resonant point of the upper band and start trimming the

Terry are you using the CAA-500 Comet analyzer? If so, then are you using the

it is, its like there is no antenna connected to the N connector and thus your
SWR is at infinity.

Scott, That's a perfect case for APRS digipeater works. You should do some
googling on that and see what special software interfaces you need. I use a
Tiny Tracker  but it is offline for a while. Long range I'm converting the Tiny
Tracker to a Raspberry Pi HAM digital utility but I don't have enough time to
attend to it yet. Still not retired. Kd5you is one of  our Winlink experts. The

[BVARC] Hoa antenna presentation

2023-04-15 Thread Terry Leatherland via BVARC
There have been several questions on how to get a pdf of my presentation from
this past week.
I will be glad to send a link to my google drive for it but do not post it to
you tube or any other globally accessible place please.
Just send me a ping to k5...@yahoo.com and I’ll send a pdf or link. Please
keep it to yourself.
I am currently fishing offshore Gulfport ms , back Sunday, tomorrow.
Cheers
Terry. k5pgf.

[BVARC] Monday 24th Net Control substitute

2023-04-11 Thread Terry Leatherland via BVARC
To anyone that can carry the flag, I am called to Dallas again on Monday the
24th, so I cant be the net control for that evening at 8pm on the repeater.
I can swap with someone next week, the 7th though.
If someone would like to take the reins and try the fun duty, let myself and
Mike Hardwick know. N5VCX. Mike is now the net coordinator.

poking around on it and dont see any, but I'm probably missing it.
When Rick has a session schedule solid we should post it i think.

the one I built for 146MHz receives crystal clear but does not transmit as far
as I can see.   I do not have a bunch of money to spend on professional
antennas so i would like to make usable ones on the first try.
I have materials like steel tubing, aluminum tubing, pvc,  wire rope shackles,
pullies, and lots of 18ga wire.  a welder, knot skills,  I am thinking putting
two steel 20' tubes up with guy wires would be easy enough, maybe even could
get them as high as 30ft, and this is great for 10m 20m, but when I start to
think of 40m and needing a 65ft dipole, 65ft in the air, I feel defeated.  are
these "rules"  really just best possible requirements and putting a 65ft dipole
at 30ft will be fine forPOTA, and maybe even some DX on the right days or
nights?  I am intending to build out my "shack" in an RV because I have some
Gypsy blood somewhere way back. otherwise I would just build two 70ft towers in
my back yard.  I will assume that 80m is not really a mobile band, and I would
only attempt it if I was really bored and living in the desert.   I did order
an antenna from a website that builds ground radial vertical antennas, for
10-80m,  I assume this will work in the USA.  and maybe an occasional DX on the
perfect days,   Obviously I have been reading too many internet sites and my
information may be very flawed so I am asking yall as I know you know the truth.
what is the absolute minimum I need to run some 10,20,40M dipoles in a park.
how high?  do I need an analyser? good swr meter?   some proper 1:1 baluns?
dummy load?  other?

I know I should have gone to the field meet.

The food is good, the parking lot is big. Being an industrial park, pretty much
everything else is closed on Saturday so there isn't much traffic to deal with.

Hopefully it takes off and becomes a regular thing. If it does, it does, if it
doesn't, it doesn't.  Will try it for a few months and see what happens

Thanks, Rick. I reviewed his original message and saw nothing about KARS

that parking lot in Stafford worked great for our club. Perhaps look at that
location for us again in the future.

the far western area, that may be out of reach for many. Of course, it is very

I had signed up for some “graveyard shift” CW slots, but since removed them.

Re: [BVARC] masts & towers

2022-04-02 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Jeff, For the last 10 years before I moved to Riverstone in 2017, I had a
fold-up antenna I engineered with the help of a mechanical engineer. The mast is
a 20' 2" steel pole. I welded a c-bracket for the eaves of my garage to use as
a pivot at the 8' mark.It required 62lbs of counter balance after compensating
for the weight of the pole above 8' and the 22lb antenna.I could fold it up and
down with one finger. At the bottom I put a short pipe in the ground to secure
it with a bolt.
Here is the pictures up and swinging down.fldupantenna2.jpg

It worked great with a MFJ rotatable
dipole.https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1WMkIW_gDYvdFcwS015bUd4Ync/view?usp=sharing=0-s9CPmHnBkCtVj1b0emw5ug

Now I have a folded dipole up 20' in the trees using a tree in the middle and
that same mast on one end.
I also have a 40M Skyloop with the same mast and trees.
You are welcome to come to Riverstone and see sometime.TerryK5pgf
Oh yea. I also used to be a HOA board member in Colony Grant.I have a letter
that passed for my application before I became a board member based on that
fold up antenna.

  Hi, BVARC!
I'm curious as to what others are doing for masts/towers.  I'm in an HOA ("no
antennas") with a tiny little yard.  Nobody has complained so far about my
homebrew "DX Commander" style fan vertical, which looks like a 31' jackite pole
(because that's pretty much what it is, with some 3d-printed wire spreaders).
I was holding that up w/ a 5' piece of 3/4 copper water pipe driven halfway
into the ground.  Worked for several months, but the wind finally bent the
pipe.  I have some 5' electrical conduit that looks a little tougher, but I may
resort to guying.  The metal inside the bottom of the fiberglass pole, I
suspect, interferes with my 10m element, anyway...
I'm also wanting to put my Ed Fong DBJ-1 (which looks like a 5' PVC pipe) up
with the feedpoint 25-30'.  I picked up a couple of old tires, and I'm thinking
of filling one with concrete (think tetherball pole) and mounting a couple of
pieces of angle iron in the concrete, so I can drill holes, put some sort of
mast between them, and make a "tilt over" base/hinge for the mast.  Has anybody
built a self-supporting (non-guyed) 30 foot mast out of, say, some sort of
stock from Home Depot/Lowe's?  The internet has lots of stories about using
chain link fence top rail (10' sections), but most say that 2 of those (20') is
all you join before it gets super wobbly.  Would love to use some sort of
square tube - maybe nesting sections - but not sure where to get 10' sections,
and not sure aluminum would be strong enough or steel would be light enough...
Anyway, that's where I am.  I thought I'd float this out there to benefit from
the experience of those who have been there and done that.  Hope y'all can help
me come up with something that will work while avoiding poor choices that could
cause damage or hurt somebody.
Thanks!
-Jeff, W5JEF

[BVARC] End fed half Wave Long Wire 80-10 800W - for sale _ special deal

2021-12-08 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Hi all, I have my MFJ End fed antenna down to put up a different one. Therefore
I have a special deal for the 1st bidder to support the BVARC 2M Repeater
fund.MFJ-1982HP, $109.95. 800 Watts, high power, 80-10 Meters, 132 feet.

The antenna is 1yr old and it worked well with 1.5SWR or less across the band,
but its uni-directional radiation pattern doesn't suit me.It radiates like a
bat, nub on the back, all out the end. :-)So my proposal for anyone is:1st Ham
to make a >=60$ donation after today to the BVARC Repeater fund (on the
website) and send me the proof after this by email, I'll put it in the mail to
you.
How's that for supporting the club?If you need more info, call email or text
me...

Thursday. Otherwise I would skip one for this. We meet every thursday but break
in the winter and summer. It is still ok to put my name on the elections roster
for non-officer position and we'll see what the people say
I may or may not be able to zoom in just for the vote, but we are right in the
middle of our group session at 7.In fact, Can I give you (Rick) my proxy exceot
for my own positional vote? Consider this my proxy.

[BVARC] Does anyone have a FT991 I can test computer control with me on theirs in SOuthwest Houston

2021-10-04 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Hi all,I have been wrestling with Ham Radio Deluxe and any other CAT program
losing talking control from my Desktop PC USB to the radio over the USB
cable. This weekend Wx5KR and I validated that my computer now seems to be
working, but the Radio USB port does not notify the computer that it is alive.
The settings all point to USB on the rear as the interface.
If anyone wants a free lunch, I'd be happy to host you at my house with your
Ft991 to plug in and see if yours works.Or I can bring my computer to you
somewhere sometime.
We're trying to see where the problem lies.Ugh.  :-(
Just reply to me if you have a solution to offer.

Re: [BVARC] Newbie's first HF radio

Congratulations. Stick with a major brand. Yaesu. Kenwood. Icom Alinco
eleckraft Buy used for a while and then gradually sell up.

There are great major radios available for 300$ Range. When you get your feet
wet, then you’ll know what you like.

Add in a Signalink for digital.
Add in a mfj or other tuner.
Antenna is the most important piece. Continually perfect them starting with
dipoles.

The fun begins. 

KJ, I'm a bit late getting in on this dialogue, so sorry if this is redundant.
I'm the proprietor of the Google Sheet where you can self-service put your name
on a day/time slot and be the net control for the noon net. It's great
practice.I'm sure John will be glad for you to take a spot. The script is in a
tab. Here is the link for the sheet . Anyone can open and edit it. If anyone
destroys it, I'll make another.I believe Eddie Runner has put a link on the

If anyone doesn't want their name and info seen, then don't put it there, just
your call. But be the controller that day if you do. :-)

there are, where being a ham radio operator often puts you on the opposite end

When I moved here, I listed to every net I could pull into for a few weeks, and
I decided to plant with BVARC because I liked the people I heard, *the

Feedback is good, it sounds like the script needs to be updated, I’d be happy

Re: [BVARC] N5XZ Lightning Strike - Seeking guidance

2021-07-06 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Robert. HI. I was going to ask this very question. I recently rerouted all of
my coax and antenna runs thru a different path into my 2nd floor shack. Below
the shack I put in a 8' copper ground rod. I have all 4 coax lines going thru
dx engineering lightning arrestors into that ground rod. It is about 40' away
on the same house side from my main house AC ground.. Should I just run a
10Gauge wire leg from that new rod to the AC rod, thereby making all of them
the same ground structure?
Isnt that called a ground loop? or am i reversed in this thinking.

- How did you deal with the insurance company?

- How did you test equipment to determine the extent of damage?

- Did you employ an electrical engineer to provide statement(s) to the
insurance company to validate damage?  (was is require to?) (Any EE's out there
available for this?)

- What was claimed? i.e. did you claim all feedlines, cables, adapters,

[BVARC] naked wire dipole - swr from tree bark?

2021-04-22 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
TO: Rick W5RH. Since you are the antenna guru, I have a question that might be
of interest to all.
As you know , I spent some time this past year perfecting some HOA stealth
antennas in the back of my house in the creek/levi zone. Both are wires. One is
a B Folded ALL band dipole that has very old stainless steel naked wire I
pieced back to together (prototype). It was working great with 1.5 swr across
the spectrum on all bands.
However now that Spring is here, the trees have managed to encroach on the gap
I had it running thru for 1/2 of one leg.I noticed this weekend and last night
on the 80M net that SWR has jumped up to 3'ish.
Question: does bark touching naked dipole wires create a grounding effect? If
yes, then I think I will re-wire it with insulated wire.
If no, then I need to look elsewhere.
Any words of wisdom other than  to cut the small branches in the gap that is
encroaching? Except that they are 20-25 ft up and I need to make an extension
on my pole limb snipper.  Thats probably the easiest 1st step. :-)

Re: [BVARC] Greetings and a question for you

2021-04-08 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Dave,Speaking as a former Board of Directors of a HOA in Sugarland, I can tell
you with certainty that almost all of the residential planned commuities and
all areas inside SugarLand City Limits have an HOA height restriction of "the
top of the house". No antennas can be erected , especially beams , visible
above the roof line. Sugarland has a set of restrictions that can be found
somewhere in Sugarlandtx.gov. I think.
I myself was able to get a waiver in Williams Grant (Hwy6 @ Williams Trace)
where I later became a Board member , for a folding 25' tower that was down 99%
of the time behind my garage. It was a 20' tall  2" steel pipe on a hinge.
If you choose prpoperties anywhere in the Sugarland Richmond Rosenberg area
that are "acreage" , you are generally cleared, no HOA.
Now all that said, LongWires and Dipoles are perfectly "stealth" when connected
to the trees surrounding most planned communities. The older communities have a
lot of large mature Oak and Ash trees, whereas the newer communties were
flattened.
I am glad to share with you privately my HOA approval waiver from the 2000s if
you want.
Shoot for Wires and Dipoles that are somewhat stealth and you'll still have a
great HAM experience.
Since Im the net control for one of the Monday nite nets on .94, maybe we'll
use this topic again for a HOA stealth poll of experiences.

Mark,A few points that I couldn't make on the net, because of time.1.  I wasn't
saying don't do it, just don't expect a bunch of QSO's.  You will be limited to
when the band is really open, and the noise floor is low at the receiving
antenna.  That will reduce the number of potential contacts by at least an
order of magnitude.  That being said, operating anything is better than
operating nothing.
2.  IMHO, and end fed antenna is not a good choice unless you also build a
matching bridge.  You can't expect to maintain an exact 50-ohm load from an
end-fed with just a toroid, you also need some shunt resistors, and variable
caps, and such, and you will need to tune it depending on conditions due to
reactance unless you built-in a big enough reactance in the circuit, and cut
the end-fed to exactly 1/2 wave where you want to operate, and the toroid with
that much permeability probably ain't cheap.  A better approach to me would be
a 20M 1/2 wave dipole trimmed at operating height with an antenna analyzer.3.
Doing this in the city, with the amount of interference, and the antenna
compromises we have to make seems to add a whole other set of issues to making
contacts.  If I were to do it, I might plan to take the rig out of the city to
operate it, and get the advantage of using trees and such to get my dipole at
33 feet up, with a low noise floor to increase my chances of contacts.
4.  In any event, I suspect you are really going to need at least a Nano VNA to
make sure you don't smoke the finals, since I doubt seriously that a QRP kit
includes protection circuitry.  That will add a minimum of $50 to your build,
although you would save a bunch on the antenna if you built a 1/2 wave dipole
instead.  Heck, I have an extra 1:1 current balun I can part with for the rock
bottom price of $0.02, and since I am including my $0.02 in this email, net due
is $0.00 :-)

Normally, this cost would not be an issue, but like so many others I am short

I need some one to listen to me though and tell me if my keying is readable. I
get a odd sound when transmitting.  Im on 40m around 7.06 right now.
Cheers AND Merry Christmas all.terry

However I am having real sour luck with consistency of cw interpretation.
Sending is fine with my Signalink but correctly interpreting the code is
pitiful even when I’m on a clearly distinguishable signal locked on the

Re: [BVARC] BVARC NEWS #5 200319. Field Day? How about small groups?

2020-03-20 Thread terry leatherland via BVARC
Rick et al. My encouragement is that maybe we need to go to small groups doing
field day in various places. The experience is good, and maybe we can maintain
the spirit that way. Even if not really competing, but rather experiencing.I am
pulling together a small group of 5 or so for that purpose, Lord willing and
time/resources  permitting.
Just a thought.Maybe the club can offer up supplies for such small groups if
the large gathering is not possible. I have my own complete facility though,
but even a car on 2M and HF dipole at a park will work.Back to the old days.

Events and Activities for the Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club

Looks like we are temporarily limited in our quest to be a radio club.  No club
meetings or testing sessions, no breakfasts, lunches, BOD meetings, etc.
Well, not in person anyway.
There will be a Breakfast HF Net on 3910 at 7AM Saturday morning, in lieu of
meeting at the iHOP.  All are welcome.
So, maybe we can use our radios to socialize or at least pass the time of our
social quarantine with working new bands, building projects, figuring out that
new DMR radio Code Plug, whatever.  Contesting is an in-home activity that you
might check out.
We'll get thru this and we'll continue on the other side of the break.   We can
all talk via e-mail too.  Check up on each other or assist with projects from
afar.
The reflector is waiting for comments concerning your personal activities in
our temporary separation period.
Just my $.02, as usual.   Best to all.  Stay at a distance, stay sanitized, but
stay active.

supply , so it plugs into the wall. The FT902 and the TS430 need a  20 or 30 amp
power supply.
The amplifier is available too.
I'll be running 100W K5TOM wore antenna from my new house until I figure out a
new invisible high power antenna situation.
The cost for each these is the average of any 2 or 3 similar on eham.net at the

most times with scheduling.
Let me know if you are interested in any of these and we can discuss terms.

FYI -- the remaining stuff went to the dumpster as promised.
One thing that didn't get taken is a 35 foot push up TV type galvanized mast,
which is extra to my needs.   These are sought after by folks to put up there
VHF antennas and even lightweight Hex type Yagis.   This will go in the heavy

I hate to see it go to scrap, when a new one is in the $75 range.
Let me know if you want to come by to pick it up.   It is about 12 feet long
