Re: Which version of CF should I download?
In your situation what would be cool is how simple this situation would become. Lets say you move site A to cfmx7 and you find a common piece of your coding that breaks and you fix it, if you were on OSX you could open up spotlight and put in a piece of that code and it would show you every single place that that code is and you could open them up right there and replace it and it would certainly get you through that much faster!. Ummm Dave...it's called global find and replacekind of an old feature ;-) Of course perhaps I missed something in the above?? The automator sounds cool though (although part of that is built-in to Photoshop...batch processing). Cheers Bryan Stevenson B.Comm. Re: Which version of CF should I download?
Apache is a webserver; Tomcat is a servlet container, while JRun, JBoss and others are J2EE servers - this means that Tomcat does a subset of the features of the others. None of this matters as the only part of Flex 2.0 you can't use without a J2EE server is Flex Data Services. Apache will serve your Flex apps fine, if you don't use FDS. If you want to install CF for production on any J2EE server or on Tomcat, you will need CF Enterprise. On 6/18/06, Rick Faircloth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So...Apache won't run any Flex apps? If you want to tote around an 18 pound laptop, thats more of a portable computer slick yeah but can u see trying to use that on a plane in peasant class? I could see it good for lan parties but not really for someone who really needs a portable laptop. And the bad part is that it still is a dell, full of kmart quality components. Those do sound like really useful tools. I do my batch photo processing through Photoshop's Batch processing function. It does save a *ton* of time on those tedious photo processing chores. I've heard about Spotlight...sounds similar to Google Desktop Search or MS's recent desktop search tool. I've had a friend who Media Production Manager for an International Corporation who uses both Windows and Macs for video production and he's been trying to convince me to go Apple for years...so I'm used to the Mac vs. Windows debate...we have a lot of fun with it... OSX has a deal called automator (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/automator/), in about 45 seconds I built an automator that sits on my desktop and what I do is take a folder of pix, usually about 90-400 a set and drop it on the icon and the automator opens up photoshop and resizes them and watermarks them and spits them into a temp folder and when thats done it opens up fireworks and optimizes them (since fw is WAY better at compression than ps) and spits them back out into a folder on my desktop and they are all done ready to go. Takes about 4 minutes with 200 photos, I was spending about 5-7 hours doing it by hand before. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
Well, this list will always be the most valuable resource for getting up-to-the-minute solutions and answers, but it's not always the best resource for exhaustive information on a topic. I'm seeing a trend toward the use of this list as a springboard to other resources where extensive information can be found, such as blogs and documents, etc. I've tried searching the archives, but that usually is not as fruitful as I would hope. Maybe as a project for learning CF7, I'll build a clearinghouse site, that will just contain links to sites, documents, blogs, etc, that can be drilled into on anything that has to do with CF or related technologies. It may already be done, but, hey, I've got to build *something* while learning CF7... Just some thoughts... Is apple ever going to get with the program, two mouse buttons are better than one, withouth having to purchase a usb mouse to do it. You have been able to right click on a mac now since OSX or about the last 4 years. Most mac ppl liked not having it and using keyboard shortcut instead or simply holding down your mouse button for an extra second brings up the right click commands. I have a apple mighty mouse and a logitech mx 1000 i use with my macs and both have left click, right click, middle click, back click, tracking etc So say if u go try a mac laptop, just hold down the trackpad button for an extra second and the right click menu pops up. I actually am trying out this program right now http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/sidetrack/, im defenatley gunna buy it. I set up mine so if i tap the top right corner of the pad it righ clicks and if i run my finger down right side it scrolls down or if i run finger across the bottom it scrolls side ways and if i tap upper left corner it opens up expose and if i tal lower left corner it opens up dw. As far as apple getting with the program, I'd say that right now apple is running the program as vista is really just a dumb version of OSX and btw~ the next version of OSX will be out before vista so ms will be that far behind again. But dont sweat it, you can still run windows 2000, i mean technology really hasn't gone anywhere since 2000 anyway right? I have some of the older medal of honor games pre intel and they run fine too. I do have the better video card in here tho and 2gbs or ram and the faster chips and the faster hd. I have read lots where pc mags have been testing pc games running on apples bootcamp and there results are that they run better than most pcs do, most compared it to a dell xps system, just half the weight and much thinner. So really there is no reason for anyone not to go mac, its long been that games were just better on pc but now you can use the better os as in OSX (and you cant diss OSX unless you have tried it, most ppl that diss it have probably never even seen it in person) and you can start buying current games that play as well as the pc versions and you can run your pc games on it as well and they will probably play better than they do on your pc. ~Dave - formerly known as the disruptor~ From: Denny Valliant [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 17, 2006 7:05 PM To: CF-Talk cf-talk@houseoffusion.com Subject: Re: Which version of CF should I download? RE: Which version of CF should I download?
I've heard about Spotlight...sounds similar to Google Desktop Search or MS's recent desktop search tool. its similar but it actually works and its built into the os so its way less resource intensive, i remember trying the google one on my pc which there is 768mb or ram on and it dogged it out. In spotlight everything is added instantly, seemlessly you dont even know its working. That was also the point behind winfs I believe was to basically mimic the file system and how it can be indexed like a mac does it but you dont gotta worry bout that now The whole windows vs apple is what it is but the thing i always see is that ppl try to compare winxp against mac os9 and they have no or little knowledge of the current osx. And all you got to do is compare what ms is trying to do with vista and see its just basic stuff osx has had for years now. Hell I thought the same thing about macs... back in my medical days I had to work on them and hated them just so damn ugly then the i can.d girls were at my house all the time with their apple powerbooks and I still wouldnt even look at them as I was moving to linux. Then one day i did and started playing with it and was blown away. And what I like is that I get to play with all the current stuff today, I just dont get why ppl stay on old os's like win2000 when they could be enjoying the goodies of today, i mean do the people that do that still listen to walkmans (with cassetes). I think Ray Camden said it right when he said now that osx is my os I am finally excited about the os that i am on... For example the other day i wanted an easy way to batch photos for the myalix site. Well i better stop there b4 the vermin start spitting ~Dave - formerly known as the disruptor~ From: Rick Faircloth Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 10:23 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? They're both the same as far as I've ever seen. When you go to install is when you choose whether you want developer, trial or full (with serial number). I think they display it that way so that you can see your options but I believe the installer is exactly the same for everything. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
You don't have to install a separate web server if you don't want. CF has its built in one. It just depends on how you want things configured. You could install IIS if you want to be able to do the sorts of things in your webserver that are beyond the scope of the CF webserver. You could also install apache. It all depends on how you want things setup and how much control you want. Re: Which version of CF should I download?
When asked during installation, choose Standalone (I think it's checked off for you by default). Standalone means that it is it's own server, meaning there is no need to use IIS or Apache, etc. I'd really recommend using this setup, as it's the most simple setup. I can't speak for performance, I don't run my own server, so I've never had to learn, but our dev server is set up this way, and we've never had a problem. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
That is true. It does have its own web server. I just feel it is better As a developer to use IIS. Personal choice is all. Well, Rick's question was do I need to install IIS, not is IIS a better choice than the JRun web server for development, which is why I gave the answer I did. But going back to that, for most developers, I think that the JRun web server is a better choice, for two reasons. First, unless you actually need to learn how to manage an external web server, why bother? And second and more important, unless you can use the same web server that you're going to manage, the value of using an external server is diminished a lot. The version of IIS that comes with Windows XP is not the same as IIS on Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
First, will the included web server act just like II6 will in production? No. You won't be able to use third-party ISAPI filters, or IIS 6's built-in URL filtering, etc, etc. Neither will the version of IIS (5.1) that you can install on Windows XP. However, your CFML code will work the same way. Secondly, do I need a full version of JRun? Why or why not? No, you don't need it. However, a lot of functionality comes out of being able to install CFMX on a J2EE server - the ability to run multiple instances, separate instances by application/context root, cluster instances. The cost of that functionality is increased complexity, which you probably don't need right now, but you might want to check that stuff out later. The version of IIS that comes with Windows XP is not the same as IIS on Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. Especially since the XP version only allows one website at a time. Re: Which version of CF should I download?
Ok...now we're getting complicated... No...just new ground for ya ;-) First, will the included web server act just like II6 will in production? Of course not, but it is good enough to test a fair amount of CF functionality (personally as others have mentioned I installed IIS to have the full blown approach) Secondly, do I need a full version of JRun? Why or why not?The full version is required IF you want to run multiple instances of CF (like so if one dies it doesn't drag down every app). It also allows you to test the packaging of CF apps into EAR/WAR files to be deployed on a J2EE server...like oh say JRUN4 ;-) Hope that helps Rick Cheers Bryan Stevenson B.Comm. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
Oh...now there's something I didn't know...what JRun actually is. I've seen it discussed a lot on this list, but assumed it was a program between CF and the server that compiled the CF code into Java, or something like that. So, JRun is actually a web server like IIS, through which I can setup websites, etc? Now I do run my own web server and will eventually bring 4.5 up to 7 on the live production server, so I'll need to know how to manage whatever will be necessary to take CF 7 to the production server... Thanks for that info, Dave...see my response to your other post for more questions... :o) All these questions is what you guys get for laughing at me sticking with 4.5 so long! :o) Rick -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 2:35 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? Oh, I'll definitely want to build a lot of different test sites.
No, Jrun is the Java runtime. It is what's running the java byte code that your CFML gets turned into when it is compiled, unless you have configured some other flavor of Java runtime to do this for you (ie websphere, tomcat, sun). -- Ian Skinner Web Programmer BloodSource www.BloodSource.org Sacramento, CA - | 1 | | - Binary Soduko | | | - C code. Oh, man...the quicksand is sucking me in more and more every posting... Not it's, JRun, compiled Java byte code, Java runtime, websphere, tomcat, sun The nice thing about CF is that it hides most of this complexity. You should just be able to run the installer and be creating applications with out knowing how CF is compiling the code and getting it to java. I've been using the MX versions for nearly three years now, and I have yet to need to look at any part of the Java underpinnings of ColdFusion. I just use the standard Jrun that comes with ColdFusion and run the installer. I have started to use multi-home which has been fun, and required me to know a little more about the Java world. I'm also diving into flex, which brings more Java pains. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
Did you install a full version of IIS on a Win XP Pro box? IIS is essentially a component of the operating system. You can only install the version of IIS that comes with the operating system. So, if you install IIS on Windows XP, you get IIS 5.1, which doesn't support multiple virtual servers. There's a tool available for quickly switching IIS 5.1 configuration info so you can develop multiple projects, but you can't run multiple virtual servers, period. Oh...now there's something I didn't know...what JRun actually is. I've seen it discussed a lot on this list, but assumed it was a program between CF and the server that compiled the CF code into Java, or something like that. So, JRun is actually a web server like IIS, through which I can setup websites, etc? Actually, no, that's not what JRun is. It's a J2EE application server, which runs Java applications. CF is essentially just another Java application. JRun includes its own web server, however, which you can use instead of an external web server. The JRun web server is quite simple, and doesn't provide anything like the functionality that IIS or Apache have. But for development, again, it's usually sufficient. Now I do run my own web server and will eventually bring 4.5 up to 7 on the live production server, so I'll need to know how to manage whatever will be necessary to take CF 7 to the production server... There are many, many ways you could go about that. You will certainly want to test all of your existing sites with CFMX before switching them over. It is possible to have both 4.5 and CFMX on the same machine, but this requires a certain familiarity with your web server configuration. RE: Which version of CF should I download?
Oh, I'll definitely want to build a lot of different test sites. So if I install IIS that comes with Windows XP, I'll only be able to test one site at a time...hmmm, is this a reason to go with the standalone JRun server? The JRun web server doesn't support multiple virtual servers either, to the best of my knowledge. If you install CFMX on JRun using the multiserver option, each JRun/CFMX instance can have its own JRun web server, but that's not a viable option for more than a handful of sites. Not to mention that you will have to slap iis upside the head with the stupid stick so that it will recognize a .cfm file. If by stupid stick you mean the JRun web server configuration utility, yes. Apache is no different, really, except that the web server configuration utility doesn't tend to work as well with it - you can't, for example, assign CF functionality to three of your five virtual servers without editing httpd.conf directly. Well I think everyone can agree that Dell makes great computers... the standard installs that those computers come with? Not so great for power users. I haven't really bought stuff from other vendors (mostly because dell has the best deals), but I would imagine they're all the same. They all want to give you their nice features preinstalled, which might be fine for the average joe, but annoys the hell out of more experienced users. I'm not sure I agree with either of those, but whatever. I consider myself somewhat of a power user, but that doesn't mean I have to reinstall the OS. Which is a good thing, given the number of non-standard drivers, etc, that come with many laptops. Well, that's good to know...and keep that head intact. :o) Rick -Original Message- From: Ian Skinner [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 3:58 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? But nothing too head exploding yet. -- Ian Skinner Web Programmer BloodSource www.BloodSource.org Sacramento, CA - | 1 | | - Binary Soduko | | | - C code. C code run. Run code run. So...the end result being that I need to use Apache or IIS (not the IIS that comes with Win XP Pro, but the full version)? -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 4:14 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? Oh, I'll definitely want to build a lot of different test sites. So if I install IIS that comes with Windows XP, I'll only be able to test one site at a time...hmmm, is this a reason to go with the standalone JRun server? The JRun web server doesn't support multiple virtual servers either, to the best of my knowledge. If you install CFMX on JRun using the multiserver option, each JRun/CFMX instance can have its own JRun web server, but that's not a viable option for more than a handful of sites. ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:243858 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
RE: Which version of CF should I download?
I'm not sure were on the same wavelength, Dave. I just need IIS to do what IIS 5 has been doing on my Win 2K Server. It may not even be IIS 5.1 (can't figure out where to get that info). So, I'm not talking about multiple virtual servers (I don't think...) I'm talking about IIIS with multiple websites setup and routed via host headers. That's different from virtual servers, right? -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 4:14 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? Did you install a full version of IIS on a Win XP Pro box? IIS is essentially a component of the operating system. You can only install the version of IIS that comes with the operating system. So, if you install IIS on Windows XP, you get IIS 5.1, which doesn't support multiple virtual servers. There's a tool available for quickly switching IIS 5.1 configuration info so you can develop multiple projects, but you can't run multiple virtual servers, period. ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:243860 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

editing httpd.conf directly Uh, oh...the light are going dim in Apacheland... Looks like IIS is leading at this point -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 4:28 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? Not to mention that you will have to slap iis upside the head with the stupid stick so that it will recognize a .cfm file. If by stupid stick you mean the JRun web server configuration utility, yes. Apache is no different, really, except that the web server configuration utility doesn't tend to work as well with it - you can't, for example, assign CF functionality to three of your five virtual servers without editing httpd.conf directly. ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:243861 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54

So...the end result being that I need to use Apache or IIS (not the IIS that comes with Win XP Pro, but the full version)? The only version of IIS that you can install on Windows XP is the one that comes with Windows XP. So, if you need to run multiple virtual servers, you will need to either (a) use Apache, or (b) install one instance of JRun for each virtual server. Out of those two choices, I recommend using Apache. However, if you simply need to simulate having multiple virtual servers by being able to switch configuration files, you might look at this: http://www.firstserved.net/services/iisadmin.php Dave Watts, CTO, Fig Leaf Software http://www.figleaf.com/ Fig Leaf Software provides the highest caliber vendor-authorized instruction at our training centers in Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Northern Virginia, or on-site at your location. buy computers No way...build your own... -Original Message- From: Dave Watts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 4:54 PM To: CF-Talk Subject: RE: Which version of CF should I download? Yea, along with a bunch of (ad|bloat)ware. That's why I blow away all my new pc's and reinstall XP from scratch... Well then, you could put the install files on the disk yourself. But you might want to buy computers from better vendors in the future. ~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:4:243863 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/4 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:4 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4 Donations Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
