Our 36-1 has had mystery leak since we owned her, and it only shows up in heavy

the chainplates. It is a completely in accessible so short of starting to cut
apart the ceiling I cannot find the source. So far, I have:

   - Removed and rebedded the chainplates, though it is not coming from that
area it is above and forward.
   - New handrails and re-cored deck where wet. Have access to all fasteners
and they are dry.
   - Removed all winches etc around mast area, ran all lines back and redid
decks.
   - Rebedded mast collar where it meets the deck.
   - Resealed around the bulkhead stainless tang that has the small stainless
plate on deck.

So, my only two intrusions that are in that area are the mast itself and the
above mentioned stainless tab. Somehow water finds a pathway in the enclosed
ceiling and dumps right into the port side shelf. If my wife happens to be
sleeping in that berth at the time you can guess what happens next. With all
the heavy rain last year it was constantly wet.

What I have not done is to add more sealant to the deck fasteners that hold the
mast collar in, but they look well sealed. I think I am going to remove the
tang plate completely and redo that. Will double up on the mast bedding at the
deck seam and the fasteners. Any suggestions are welcomed!

I replaced my flax packing with Tefpak along with Teflon lubricant. I am
continually adjusting  the stuffing box to get an appropriate drip rate of 1-2
drops/min with the shaft rotating. The drip continues when the engine is not
running. Fortunately my boat is a 35 Mark III with easy access to the stuffing
box. (Only minimal boat yoga needed to access the stuffing box).  If your
access is poor my recommendation is to continue with flax.

Hi John. Teflon packing works great.  Check with Brer Rabbit.  Their 33-1
engine is mounted backwards with a v drive so the stuffing box is under the
engine so limited access. Hope this helps John of the 34 aforementioned.

36-1 Owners,

Hello. I am looking for any insight into how any 36 owners have managed the
lack of access to the stuffing box. Each time I want to get it, we have to pull
the muffler, and then the access is still very limited. On the other 3 boats I
have owned, it was a piece of cake. I'm not sure what they were thinking.

I looked into the PYI system, but my yard wanted to cut the shaft and put in a
new one. It is less than 10 years old, so that is a no-go. We are going to pack
with Teflon instead of the old-style flax that was in there and hope for better
results. But having to adjust it once it is in the water is a real challenge. I
have seen the access on the later model 34, and I am very jealous. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I watched hundreds of videos installing lithium battery systems in sailboats
and also in RVs.  I found MarineHowTo.com had a link to Victron diagrams and
there are many many videos describing each Victron module on YouTube.

I didn't go very deep into solar panels, which is probably where I'd start if
our boat was on a mooring.

My situation is different.

Our boat is in a slip with 30amp power available and we enjoy air conditioning,
no extra charge.  I couldn't build a lithium/solar system large enough to
support air conditioning so it lost a lot of attraction.  We mostly daysail and
return to the slip.  When we cruise, my wife prefers a marina over anchoring
out, where they have a pool, so we take a slip at a marina and plug in.   We
enjoy walking strange towns and learning the history and finding good
restaurants and live music and meeting new people.  It's all part of the
adventure of cruising.

several examples.   Check the glassed-in knees where the shrouds attach.  This
had either been repaired or required repair in the boats I had looked at.
This repair is not a big deal for a competent amateur.   Similarly, several had
wet/soft decks.   One (sadly) needed much of the cored area rebuilt, and the
area around the lazarette could not be trusted to bear my weight.  Poor guy
would have given me the boat I think.    For sure check that.Lastly, two of the
boats I had looked at had hydraulic backstay adjusters.   Both boats had very
distorted topsides at approximately the location where the shrouds attach.  It
gave the impression that the hull had buckled due to the force of the
adjusters.   .   All that said, I'd buy one at the right price because they are
probably pretty easy to work on (myself) and they are very pretty.
Good luck.

Hi all; Bill is the winner for long distance diagnosing...; there is  a chrome
"collar" or "nut' which is threaded and the the top of the rudder post which is
also threaded; the collar is tightened down over the rudder post and sits on a
delrin "washer" which is about 1/8 inch thick. There are two set screws in the
collar to keep it tight n the rudder post.  The rudder pivots on this assembly
when steering the boat.

In my case, these set screws apparently loosened up to allow the collar to
loosen which caused play in the rudder post. The result was to strip the
threads on the collar allowing the rudder to drop.  The fix is to get a new
collar, which I hope someone here can help my in identifying; there are no
markings or part numbers on the collar. Of course, I have lots of photos.

For a quick fix, we were able to invert the collar and use the remaining
threads ( about 1/2" to 5/8") to hold the rudder in place. I am confident that
this will work until I can identify and order the new collar.

So it seems I have been lucky and my situation fits under Mike Hoyt's "good
case" scenario rather than the whole assembly failing, which is the "bad case"
scenario.   I feel a lot better than I did 24 hours ago, but will report back
on progress.  I would have thought the C used the same assembly for all of
the rudders regardless of the model of the boat, but maybe not...;

If anyone ha any experience or suggestions in locating the "collar, please send
them on...Thank you to everyone!

with nuts on each end.  I had a nut come off several years ago, which nearly
caused a catastrophic failure.  Inspect the deck fitting.

determine why and fix that.  If post has not dropped the it may be rudder

Every few months I ask my wife if we should sell our beloved 1982 C 37. And
being the practical spouse, she says yes. The last time we sailed her was
returning from the Block Island rendezvous many years ago. A few of you may
remember the rendezvous’ final day as being a sensational sail. A few miles
from Stonington our home port we blew out the mainsail. I replaced with a UK
with the mast sliders, but havent sailed since. We have the luxury of owning a
large boathouse in florida so we have parked her there the last few years. We
find our age limits our boating to taking our legacy 40 to stonington each
spring and returning in fall. Thanks for allowing me to speak a little of my 49
years of owning five C I have no idea of the financial value of this boat.
Possibly you can give me guidance. When buying the boat I installed a Beta
(kubota) engine. Has a couple hundred hours on it. While a little reluctant, I
am prepared to sell her.Bob Please show your appreciation for this list and the

Ugh.
I've temp sealed the deck plate with Gorilla tape and am considering ways for

rot issues, I'll be cleaning/rebedding both chainplates.
Any thoughts on this process?Thoughts on using butyl tape for bedding instead

Should I replace these?

Stus-List Re: Wet Vac

2023-10-18 Thread Richard Bush via CnC-List
We recently had a situation here where a guy was using the wet vac to clean up
gasoline...guess what happened...he's in the hospital with 2nd degree burns and
in an induced comathe boat was destroyed.  Why would someone do that, you
ask? He was a life long sailor who had just purchased his first power boat, a
43 ft cruiser!

tool out of all my battery tools and corded tools is a small cordedwet/vac.  It
has a small, all plastic tank and large and strong motor.  I took off the
castors and glued a piece of carpet to the bottom, so it dosn't scratch the
varnished sole, or the paint on deck.  I think it has a five gallon tank and a
5hp motor and an 18 ft long 1 1/2" hose, so it can really reach everywhere in
the boat.  I keep it in a dock box and use it all the time and lend it out to
others.  I'd love to have it mounted aboard, but my boat is just too small.

 Hi Chuck,
First off,  12V * 100 A*hr = 1200 W*hr.  But keep in mind that A*hr battery
ratings for a 100 A*hr battery is tested typical at 5 amps(or 0.05C).  That is
your 100 A*hr is 5A * 20hr. At this rate the battery is only providing 12.5V *
5A = 63 Watts.    At higher current loads, your effective battery capacity will
be much much less  due to Peuket Effect losses.   In fact, a 100 A*hr rated
lead-acid battery at 100 amp load would only provide about 20 A*hr of
energy(and lots of heat).  To add to the insult, lead acid based batteries like
AGM should not be depleted below 50% capacity to limit damage, so reserving 1
battery for start leaves only 50 A*hr for your house bank at loads of about 5
amps.    At a 20A load, the 100 A*hr (50 A*hr effective) only provides 60 A*hr
(30 A*hr effective).  That’s about 30 A*hr / 20A = 1.5 hrs of use.
A 1000 W inverter could draw a max of 1000W / 12.5V = 80 Amps (but likely
higher due to a voltage drop).  This would drain your battery in 6 - 10 minutes.
I gave a talk to some local Hams about Solar Off-Grid Systems.  I posted the
slides on my blog (see link below).    On slides 5 & 6, I discuss battery
discharge capacity and bank sizes.

https://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/2021/10/solar-off-grid-system.html

On Johanna Rose, I have a 2000W inverter charger.  When I run my microwave, it
draws about 100A from a 560 A*hr  LiFePO4 battery.   Like Dennis, I have my
inverter connected to my panel powering all AC loads except for my A/C unit and
water heater.   The inverter has a built in transfer switch which automatically
(and smoothly) transfers to shore power when available.

Karl; I would recommend looking into it: in looking back on it; our trailer
move went very well; we took the time to prep the trailer (new axles and tires)
and made sure the boat was situated on the trailer correctly: ( had to use a
come-a-long to move the whole boat forward about 3 inches, but it improved the
trailer tongue weight noticeably! We also went during mid-day when there was
light traffic and no school busses moving about.  We had a parade of four
vehicles and the required flags and wide load signs.  I recommend a cold beer
or more afterwards...!If you have specific questions please feel free to call

I still have the original headsail winches on my 1995 C 36 XL/kcb--Lewmar
50s self-tailing 2 speed IIRC--although I moved them forward for my local
racing needs.  I also added a set of Lewmar 44s to make kite handling more
reasonable. If this combination of 'power' is not enough, I need to get drop my
sails and get into port somewhere!!
However, even these winches for the genoa can seem to be underpowered if the
helm is not in tune with the headsail as it crosses the boat. I find it
especially important to not turn the boat too fast during the tack. The helm
needs to turn the wheel slowly, especially within say +/- 10-15 degrees of head
to wind, before the genoa begins to fill on the new tack.
This will allow most of the new active sheet to be brought in hand over hand
with very little pressure on it so that when it fills, there is only a few feet
to winch in with a handle.
I have found that with a 155% headsail, a 'quick' tack is usually a bad one
since the grinders have to seriously grind in too much line with the genoa
filled. This is a good example of using better 'timing' during the tack to
reduce the serious winching required otherwise. If you are racing, climbing
back to close-hauled from a tack that was too fast with the genoa too far out
loses a lot of ground to windward to your competitors on every 'fast' tack.
BTW, if you add/replace any winches be mindful of where you mount them. My
cockpit was originally set up more for cruising so the headsail winches were
aft in the cockpit. As I did more club racing, in order to have room in the
cockpit for flying a masthead symmetrical kite, I had to move them forward and
add a set (44s) to handle the kite. I think the original thought was to fly the
kite from winches on the cockpit bulkhead either side of the companionway which
were Lewmar 30s. This turned out to be totally underpowered for my kite AND it
concentrated too many bodies together at the companionway in each other's way
most of the time. Further, even when I moved the 30s to the cockpit coaming aft
of the headsail winches, I found the 30s to be underpowered for my kite--thus I
replaced them with the 44s.
Until I added the 44s, we tried to use the headsail winches for the kite which
had plenty of power--however, moving the kite and genoa sheets during racing
was much too confusing and time consuming.

Macdara; welcome to the list; there are many owners with the centerboard boats;
the mechanics of the centerboard is reasonable simple, however, the wear and
tear on a given boat can be troublesome; your photos are good: I am not aware
of any readily available replacement parts for C centerboards, but someone
else on the list may have better information; I think your best bet is to get
the boat in a sling and lower the board and look up in the cavity to see if
there is any damage or rot; if there is, you can address it by re-glassing the
area or encapsulating the rotted area;
these boats were built strong and it would take  something like a direct
grounding to cause structural damage.  Good luck with your project and please
report back with your findings and any repairs you decide to make;

looking at painting we also started looking at options. The vinyl wrap is about
half the paint cost and decent life span and repairable.
For us, either is a couple of years off but does the group have any input or
experience?

Got some scratches on the starboard side a couple years ago in Hurricane Ida.
Had it repaired last year.  The painter only sprayed the damaged area and a bit
more.  The Awlcraft repaired well. The painter taped the area off rather than
feathering it out.  Matched well but I can see the tape line up close.  From 20
feet you can't.  Color is red so some minor fading was expected.
It was rumoured that Touche' had been painted with Imron prior to my purchasing
it.  Can't really comment because it was never verified.  I sanded the topsides
prior to the Awlcraft.
Discuss with your painter his process for priming prior to applying any topcoat.

I am looking at a potential next boat which might need some topside painting,
and a very knowledgeable friend said while Awlgrip is the hardest surface, the
pigment is not consistent through the paint thickness which makes any scratches
more apparent.  Awlcraft, while a little softer surface, is easier to apply
initially and repair in the future.

FWIW - He had his last 2 boats painted with Alexseal and they looked great
after 8 years.  Easy to apply and can be repaired.

1st, I'm sorry for the ordeal you're going through.  I had a similar episode a

Certain colors are more difficult to blend but, I've never heard anyone say
awgrip couldn't be repaired.  There is also awlcraft 2000 which is supposed to
be easier to repair.  When I had Rum Runner painted we went with awgrip on the
top sides and awlcraft 2000 for the deck and mast.  I was very happy with the
results.

As far as color, flag blue is always stunning.  We went with stars and stripes
blue on Rum Runner.  It's a beautiful color but, it's one that's hard to blend.
However, there were some repairs done to that and, it wasn't that bad to my
eye.  Awlgrip is a really tough finish.  I'm not sure if I'd go for something
else given awlgrip's history and reputation.  UNLESS, there was a huge cost
savings in the product and they could point me to happy customers with the iron.

Best of luck!

Danny

it might be wise to do the entire half hull at a minimum—after all, it’s hard
to compare hull sides in or out of the water with one set of eyes!

Another qualifier is that our area (Ohio River) is not a big boating community

One last point, is, color; our hull is the C factory white, don;t know the

Joe, my boat is a 1985 model, but there were only minor cosmetic changes to
these boats; the basic hulls and deck layouts were seldom changed; I am not
aware of any general issues, these boats, (as you know) are built like tanks,
and the 37 was aimed at the cruising market, so it is pretty beefy; I have had
zero issues with the design or sailing characteristics, (except for the cramped
engine quarters); I have all of the spec sheets for my boat and will be happy
to share them if there is any particular area you want to take a closer look
at...; let me know of any other questions you have, thanks!

Even in murky water, it seems like a 20 second dive would give you the answer,
unless the murk is caused by something nasty you don’t want to swim in. You
could always run a line from one side of the boat to the other and walk aft and
see if you can tell if the board is hanging down.

Assuming it goes up and down as usual, the thunk would be side to side movement
that the cable cannot change. Some boats just do this, I have heard of people
swimming down and stuffing a sponge or two in the slot to get a quite night’s
sleep.

Hey Richard,
My 36XL (1995) has a centerboard rigged identically as yours and I have had the
board replaced when my cable parted after ~ 16 years. Thus I am more familiar
with my cb than I’d like!!
1. If the sound is ‘new’ and it does this with the board up, something has
changed so that the board can swing a little athwartship—puzzling to be
sure—since there is likely little room for this given a pretty tight fit
between the cb trunk walls and the board sides. Plus, the board pivots on a pin
about 4 inches in diameter so again hard to see how it can ‘swing’ even a
little?
2. If there is enough visibility in the river, I think the cable could be
replaced in the water with a diver after it’s lowered fully (cable stop
disabled so the board hangs further forward than in the normal down position).
Finding a diver willing to do this is another matter!
3. Given the consequences of a failed cable, pivot pin, etc. I recommend that
you get a diver to at least have a good look while you are on board to move the
board up and down. If your cable fails in the board up position, the weighted
board will fall, hitting the forward part of the trunk with such force that it
likely will shear the board off the pin as the board continues forward and down
to the bottom. Definitely not a fun day on the water—no need to ask how I know!!
Good luck!

Subject: Stus-List American Magic on Pensacola Bay

Was sailing Touche' on Pensacola Bay yesterday afternoon after the sea breeze
filled in.  The New York Yacht Club's AC40, American Magic, was on the bay
practicing.  American Magic and chase boats made a couple of passes near us.
One was about 200 yards off our stern.
Breeze was about 10-11 knots.  They were using one of their larger headsails.
It is REALLY fast!  Here's pics I snagged as it "flew" by.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-jyFZ85piLSD5NcuGp9yoJSaEJArBYRo?usp=share_link
Here's the link to the team's recap of the day.  Dang it!  Touche' didn't make
the edit.  :(

Dave, that looks really good to me!  I'm sure Dennis or others can advise
about the gelcoat, but I could live with it that way; Is you new winch an
electric winch? What does the underside look like? are there any exposed bolts
in the cabin? Thanks

I finished my winch project yesterday and am quite happy with the result.  I
used an aluminum plate as adapter as I had planned which I drilled and tapped
for the Harken mounting holes.  Then I was able to reuse a number of the old
through deck holes plus several new ones to mount the plate (bed-it butyl
underneath).  I am not happy with the white epoxy I used to fill the 2 exposed
old holes (you can see one just to the right of the winch).  What do others use
to try to match the gelcoat and get a flat or textured surface?  Dave

Great shake-down sail.  Winds were about 12 (no instruments hooked up yet)
according to the yacht club's weather station and we were doing 7.4-7.7 (SOG

I strongly 'second' Dennis' views on the quality of the painter.
My boat came from the factory with a painted hull (1995) and it was a terrific
looking deep Navy Flag blue. Over the years (about 15) it had faded and needed
redone so I bit the bullet and she went into the paint shed (without mast!).
Since the paint (Awlgrip I think) had too be sprayed, it was above my pay grade
to attempt it myself. The yard was then managed by a former boat painter who
had lots of experience and the result, a slightly lighter blue (Aristo Blue?)
was again dazzling.
Another 5-6 years go by and with only 2 on board, I managed to get it crosswise
to a strong tidal current in Beaufort, NC trying to get into a slip. Instead of
waiting for the current to slow, I stubbornly went ahead--big mistake!  As you
can imagine, my docking didn't go well and I ended up pinned against a piling
on the port side while we desperately tried to get a line to the starboard side
to pull us off. Rescued by a nice lady who knew about the strong tidal
currents, she tied a line for us to starboard and we managed to winch the boat
off the port side piling.
Needless to say, my port side paint job was now in shambles!
Back to the same yard that had painted her previously for the repair. The same
yard manager prepared about a ~ 8 ft x 3 ft rectangular section enclosing the
damage (nothing structural) and did his magic. Before it went back in the
water, I inspected the hull while she was in the lift and I could not tell
where the damage had been or even where the edges of the rectangular section
were.
He told me then that he painting goal was (like the commercial for the
ServicePro clean-up service after a fire or water damage to a structure or
home)  to "...make it look like it never even happened..." and he certainly
succeeded.
My chances of doing it that well were somewhere between exceeding slim and none
(and more likely negative) and reminded me of the adage that just because you
CAN DIY doesn't mean that you SHOULD DIY.
Unfortunately the yard manager/painter retired (I kidded him that I paid for
his home in the islands!) so if I ever need my hull painted, I have to find
someone else.
YMMV and good luck finding a good painter--hopefully before you tell him to go
ahead!

Hi Richard    I
thought I was replying directly to Bob – OOPS    Persistence is currently at
East River Shipyard in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia near Chester
(www.eastrivershipyard.ca).  There was some deep gouging along the port bow
extending back about 8 feet due to an incident during a Wednesday evening race
in June 2022.  ERSY has repaired the damage and painted the topsides of the
entire boat.  We are quite excited to have a new paint job that has no
scratches or owies (until we start sailing and docking again).    Home Club is
the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax, NS (www.rnsys.com) where Bob
and I are both members.  Most years Persistence is one of or the first boat
launched – usually first week of April.  Persistence absence is noted for that
reason    East River is just under 8 hours from Halifax by boat.  It is an easy
trip that we have done many times (Chester Race Week, cruises, etc…)    Sorry

I am in the same position, but I can’t blame it on a hurricane (my stupidity
instead).  Had the topsides painted in 2021 with Awlcraft 2000 and it looked
great.  Last mark of the last race of the season in 2021 I was single-handing
and put the boat on autopilot to take the whisker pole down at the leeward
mark.  Took longer than it should have and I was not paying attention and
looked up to see the boat headed directly at the government nun buoy I was
supposed to round.  Didn’t get back to the helm in time and hit it dead on
(taking a chunk out of the bow under the roller) and then scraped along the
starboard side, trashing my new paint job.  I installed an autopilot remote
control (Madman Marine) last week to (hopefully) keep that from ever happening
again.  Dave

Hi Chuck,

Yes, we saw a bunch of kiteboarders and windsurfers on the sound side of
Hatteras near Avon.  We were there during a gale warning - the ferries even
shut down.

Regarding the boom, I looked on Selden’s website for dealers in the US and
contacted a half-dozen of them.  I learned that shipping a new boom to Colorado
was going to cost me $1K (yes, seriously).  Meanwhile I already had a
three-week trip planned with my travel trailer to the Florida panhandle (St.
George Island State Park, fantastic place), St. Augustine where a race week was
happening coincidentally, Charleston, the Outer Banks, and home via Nashville
and Lake of the Ozarks.  Omar Sails in New Bern, NC is a Selden dealer and was
one of the half-dozen I contacted.  Craig Beavers there was by far the most
responsive and helpful of all the dealers I contacted.  He told me there is a
Selden manufacturing site in Charleston, and confirmed I could pick up the boom
there myself and transport it home in my travel trailer (which has 24’ finished
space).  So I ordered the boom from Craig, and stopped at Selden about a week
ago and met the guys who built it, and we stuffed it into my trailer.  It was
an obvious and easy way to save $1K in shipping.

Annapolis was not on the itinerary for this trip, but thanks for the offer!

Cheers,
Randy

door there, (bought a prefab one from Defender Marine, but they are available
in most any marine supplier now days) and installed the depth, (and speed)
gauges in the hull; access was easy and we gained more storage space...:

Hi all,
Sorry about ressurecting this topic. I only had time to go to the boat this
past weekend. Bill, the boat is a C 25

Here is an "annotated" drawing from Sailboat data that I will use for my
questions: https://imgur.com/a/3Ar35Pb

To me, there are three options (some easier than others) to cut the hull (2
inches round) and add the transducer:

Red marker: At the moment, the original (I think?) depth sounder is located in
the red marker *inside* the hull.

Yellow marker: There is a small access port to the fibreglass on the yellow
marker that *could* fit the depth/speed transducer. It feels very high on the
hull and a bit fragile as the fitting would stick out of the access port and be
a bit exposed (second picture of the link)

Green marker: Last option, cut a square access *hatch* on the plastic liner
wall (orange mark)that separates the "inside" of the boat from the fiberglass
hull and then cut a hole on the green mark.

Any mindhive thoughts? I am very nervous about making a hole in the wrong place
:)

Thanks!

Chuck, I wanted to thank you for the insight on the chandleries...it is so
helpful to have the "inside" view of these places; due to my location I rely on

Having been a supplier to many marine
chandleries over the past 20+ years while working for Edson and now Novabraid,
there’s definitely been some decline in quality retail access in the past 24
months.  Surprisingly many of these issues came in the wake of a huge surge in
retail boat and accessory sales during and just after the height of the
pandemic and may boat supply businesses had record sales during this period,
despite some of the supply chain challenges that occurred.   Perhaps those
business owners are taking their profits to the bank and streamlining their
sales channels to avoid bankruptcy if a recession occurs.   Obviously, prices
are rising as a function of inflation and transportation costs and many retail
business struggle to find qualified employees.  West Marine was renowned for
hiring retirees who would work part time to get the employee discount but I
think most of those folks have weighed anchor and retired for good.  My nephew
has been an assistant manager at a West Marine for several years and they’ve
been forced to scale back to a 5 day work week as they only had two employees
for the entire store, a manager and an assistant.Defender, unfortunately is
going through a rather difficult transition under new ownership and most of my
sailing friends are struggling with their new website.  They’re currently
remodeling the retail outlet, downsizing display areas and relying far more on
their phone customer service team to help with product applications rather than
their in store counter help.  I’ve been told it will be up to speed in a few
weeks, but this is the start of boat prep season in New England and the
Northeast so they could not have picked a worse time to shut down the retail
store. One outlet that folks haven’t mentioned is Hamilton Marine up in Maine.
They’ve got a pretty comprehensive product selection and pricing is typically a
bit less than you’ll find at West Marine.  5 store locations as well.  Not a
super discount place, but their staff is pretty seasoned without much turnover.
You probably won’t find the latest and greatest new Harken carbon fiber maxi
yacht winches there, but for hardware, bottom paint, and mooring chain, they do
just fine. And there’s always the local “head of the harbor” marine store at the
hometown boatyard.  Yes, you’ll pay more for that bottom paint, but giving them
some business on the retail side means they’re more likely to have the water
pump impeller you need when your boat starts overheating the day before you
leave on your summer cruise.Have a great season, y’all,Chuck GilchrestS/V Half

This is a Betty/Veronica conversation….for those of a certain age.  (Lol.)

Build Quality aside, This fun discussion is totally dependent on how you wish
to use the boat.    I’m in the process of buying my next boat - an alubat ovni
- and I’m sure it’ll sail like a barge compared to my c 33ii.  It doesn’t
have the interior volume, walk through transom, twin helms or owners cabin of a
modern centre cockpit/aft cabin design, which would necessarily have exposed
rudders, a huge high dodger and an elevated cockpit sole.  (The latter is a
pain point for me in newer boats under, say 45’). The design/features
compromise of the boat I chose do suit my intended use.
I do think that vintage  is often more relevant that builder - most mass
production builders’ designs of a given period have a lot in common My C$.02.

Andy, thank you, thank you; I have long felt that way, and it is nice to hear a

That is a major reason I have held on to my C 37;  boats that can provide
what it provides are going to cost 10 times what I have in my boat and don't
handle as well..!

Mack; thanks for sending the photos...they are definitely not the shroud chain
plates; I looked at several late 70s and 1980  34s on Yachtworld and none of
those boats had the chain plates in your photos...which leads me to believe
they were likely added to prevent twisting or pulling the deck at the jib
tracks...as you surmised; they will clearly need to be removed and
re-bedded...factor that expense in your bid...   good luck, the 34 is a nice

notice attached to the partial bulkheads which separate the settees from
the galley/nav area there are what appear to be chainplates.  Those
aluminum plates are rather far aft for any standing rigging.  Their
purpose, I reckon, is to reinforce the genoa track (correct me if I'm
way off, and these are distinguished from the aluminum tubes which, I
suppose, reinforce the mainsheet traveler.  So, here's my question:
there is noticeable water incursion, as there is some streaking on the
port bulkhead below the "chainplate." I assume I need to be prepared for
deck core rot, and possible rot in the teak plywood of the bulkhead. The
extent of any rot, if it requires the replacement of that bulkhead, may
be a deal-breaker.  Thoughts? Am I on the right track?

problems.  I keep a small 5gallon wet/vac in a dockbox and do this every few

Everyone - thanks very much for the very useful and informative responses -
much appreciated! The goal is to get setup as simply as possible.I am tending
for symmetrical setup for sure - just nice to be able to go close to DDW
efficiently - for cruising and racing (no asymmetrical in our fleet). So here’s
where I’m at…
   - Baby stay - attach snap shackle at base with bungee to pull it to base of
mast when disengaged. Use block and tackle on baby stay for adjustments (maybe
4:1, not sure yet).
   - Topping lift - consensus is that there is a sheave in the slot 2/3 the way
up the mast I will check that out for sure. I will keep topping lift cleat on
the mast - for end to end gybe’s it should require minimal adjustments.
   - Inboard end - I will attach a ring to the mast (head highish) and plan on
gybing end to end.
   - Downhaul - I saw the pics thanks but did not see a picture of the deck
fitting. I’m pretty sure I could devise a system that connects to toe rail mid
pole distance
Once again what a great response from this forum - thanks. I will reply with an
update hopefully sooner than later!

I was at the
Mystic one last night. I live about a mile from downtown and my boat is right
across the river from Seaport Marine. When the explosions started happening we
rushed down. It was caused by an open neutral on the power feed from the
building to shore power to the boats in the water. It was blowing hard as well
and we were lucky to not lose more than we did.   John McCreaTalisman1979

List folks,As you all have heard, Rob Ball
is no longer with us.  I was very fortunate to know Rob and his family quite
well as he and I worked together at Edson, we raced together on various C’s
and Etchells and shared numerous dinners and glasses of wine over the past few
decades. His family and ours are intertwined in many ways.  I will miss his
friendship more than words can express. At his memorial service at the New
Bedford Yacht Club attended by hundreds of friends and colleagues, his C 35
Mk 3 “Opus” was dressed with signal flags and a Canadian Flag flying from the
stern on the club’s main dock.  It is with a tinge of happiness that I tell you
all that his boat will be heading north to its new permanent home in Newcastle,
Ontario now being skippered by Rob’s son Dayton.  We’re not sure when that will
happen, either on a trailer, or by water, but Dayton and his 3 young boys will
continue Rob’s legacy of sailing back in Rob’s home waters of Lake Ontario.
I’m sure Rob would be happy with that knowledge.Chuck GilchrestS/V Half

Touche's slip is on Bayou Castine on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
Fairly tropical most of the year.
Monday I went for a nice sail on the lake.  Well, nice if you don't count the
biting flies and love bugs.  If you don't know about love bugs, Google them.
They're disgusting creatures whose only natural enemies are Kenworths and
Peterbilts.  They occur in spring and late summer.
Just out of my slip I saw a 5-7 foot alligator then another about 8-9 feet.
The bayou has developed a prolific growth of water weeds.  As I came to a tight
spot in the bayou, the weeds forced Touche' and a Catalina 34 to pass close
aboard in a narrow section of the bayou.
When I returned to the slip, the weather was deteriorating and I wanted to get
Touche' tied up before the storm hit.  Oh, crap!  A large island of weeds had
drifted across the entrance to Touche's slip.  I tried to back up to it, grab
it with a boat hook and move it out of the way.  No luck.  The storm was
approaching fast so I just powered into the slip bow first pushing the weeds in
with me.  The island of weeds wrapped around the bow and keel.  I normally back
in.  The dock lines worked and Touche' was safely tied up when the storm hit.
It was raining hard and I was reluctant to get wet to retrieve the shore power
cord to fire up the air conditioning.  All that was missing was for The Rock to
show up in his Jungle Cruise costume.
During the storm, I sweated and pondered how to clear the weeds.  Fortunately,
the storm killed any wind.  I backed out of the slip, motored around to the far
side of my pier, tied Touche's stern to the pier and used the propwash to blow
the weeds out of the slip and into the bayou.  I could then pull back around
the pier and back into the slip normally.
The harbormaster said he'd contacted Wildlife and Fisheries to come spray the
weeds.  Estimated 2-3 weeks.  What joy!

The inlet fitting was completely corroded through. Same with the other exit
