[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Access - El Paso/Pueblo Counties

2024-02-01 Thread linda hodges

Birder friends,

As questions regarding Chico Basin Ranch access are beginning to roll in,
I'd like to clarify the new regulations per Aiken Audubon's birding lease
with the CO State Land Board:

   - · The last day to visit Chico under the current policy is Feb 29
th. The ranch will then close to birders until April 29, when banding
begins. It will close on June 2nd and reopen again from September 2
through Oct 6th. The ranch will be closed to birders the remainder of
   the year.
   - · Birders will need to register and pay ahead of time, likely up
to 7 days in advance, through a system to be set up by Aiken Audubon.
   - · Visitation will be capped at 20 birders/day, from 7 a.m. to 1
p.m., and access will be limited to the banding station, HQ and Rose Pond.
   The fee will be $15/person.
   - · Groups will be able to register farther in advance, possibly
30 days prior to visiting, though that’s not yet been worked out.
   - · Consider signing up for Aiken’s emails (monthly) to receive
   regular updates at: AikenAudubon.com
   ,
   under “About”.

*To recap, access for birders: *
*Now through Feb 29th*
*April 29 - June 2*
*Sept 2 - Oct 6*

This first year will likely be bumpy as we work to comply with the
requirements, so we ask for your patience. Any questions may be sent to me
directly.

Please spread the word to your organizations and/or fellow birders.
Hope to see you on the ranch.

*Linda Hodges*
*Aiken Audubon*

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Ag Lessee Update (El Paso, Pueblo Counties)

2023-10-09 Thread linda hodges
Greetings, COBirders,

If you are concerned about the future agricultural/grazing lessee of Chico
Basin Ranch, please read on.

The State Land Board (SLB) staff is recommending Flying Diamond Ranch (the
Johnson family) as the ag lessee that would replace Ranchlands (the
Phillips family) beginning Jan 1, 2025.

The SLB Commissioners will vote on this on Weds November 8th. Any comments
should be posted by *midnight on Monday Nov 6th. *

You may comment or sign up to speak at the meeting (in person or via zoom)*
here: *
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdHLoANsTkJyomSRsPJm5aNH5EA-2sA8h7RlM8Df_ESURzjSQ/viewform
.

Aiken Audubon will not be taking a position on this. However, we will hold
the future, separate birding lease at Chico Basin Ranch, which will operate
under different and more challenging conditions than it does currently.
Aiken and Colorado birders, not to mention the birds themselves, have
benefited from over two decades of exceedingly friendly, respectful
coexistence with Ranchlands.

State Land Board staff will be recommending Flying Diamond to the
Commissioners as the next ag lessee. Ranchlands is appealing the decision.
Of the 11 bidders, Flying Diamond received the highest rating by staff, and
Ranchlands received the 2nd highest- the difference being just over 5
points out of 100. You can visit the ranch websites to view their
philosophies, as well as conservation and ranching awards. A number of
regional birders will be urging the Commissioners to keep Ranchlands at
Chico, due to their proven outstanding stewardship of the land and their
excellent working relationship with birders, among other attributes. If
you’d like further information on Ranchlands or Flying Diamond, please
don’t hesitate to contact me directly. Obviously, you can comment on any
ranch that bid on Chico.

Ranchlands: https://ranchlands.com/

Flying Diamond: https://flyingdiamondcattleranch.com/

Again, we urge you to *comment by midnight on Monday Nov 6th*.

Thanks to all of you for your interest in keeping Chico bird-friendly, and
under exemplary land stewardship.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch birding on May 14th

2023-05-14 Thread Brandon
After being out of the state for a week, I got back to birding in Colorado
a bit today.

The Pueblo County side of Chico Basin Ranch (Headquarters and Rose Pond),
male Black-throated Blue Warbler, Nashville Warbler, four Northern
Waterthrush, American Redstart, Cassin's Vireo, singing Least Flycatchers.

On the El Paso County side of ranch (banding station), singing male Hooded
Warbler, male Magnolia Warbler, male Black-throated Gray Warbler, Northern
Waterthrush.

I ended with 13 species of warblers there today.

Just a reminder, any birders going to Chico Basin Ranch are required to pay
$15 per person to visit the ranch each day they go there. Most of us local
birders have paid the annual fee of $125. I am not sure if everyone who
was out there today from out of town, signed in and paid. If you aren't
planning to pay, then please don't go there. The people not paying, may
ruin the birding for us local birders who go there often.

Birder friends,

Please note that Chico (fee area) will be closed tomorrow due to poor road
conditions.

In fact, please check the Chico facebook page - Ranchlands Chico Basin
Ranch - before *any* trip to ensure the roads are passable. If you don't
use facebook, ask someone who does!

Thanks for your consideration,

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Update - El Paso/Pueblo Counties

2022-05-21 Thread linda hodges
Birders,

The Phillips family has requested that birders *not* visit the ranch
tomorrow (Sunday).
The roads are in bad shape due to the precipitation (vehicles are mostly
going sideways) , and they 'd like to keep them from getting worse.
It's also begun snowing again out there.

This info has been relayed to CFO.

Thanks for understanding,
Linda

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch reminders

2021-05-26 Thread Brandon
If you are visiting Chico Basin Ranch,* you must pay the daily fee, each
time you come*. Some birders who don't have the annual pass, are
trespassing on Chico Basin Ranch, if they aren't paying the daily fee and
signing in at the HQ Kiosk and signing the waiver. Also, the ranch
visitors are required to obey the* 25 MPH speed limit* for all the Ranch
roads. Since Chico Basin Ranch is the best migrant location in Pueblo and
El Paso Counties, us local birders don't want to see the Ranch closed down
to us, if some visiting birders are not obeying the rules. Birding &
Wildlife Viewing - Ranchlands

This spring Chico Basin Ranch has had four new species of birds for the
Ranch (Common Black Hawk, Caspian Tern, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, and Black
Swift (today) -- all of these were photographed and the next new documented
bird, will be the 350th bird species for the Ranch. It has been a good
warbler spring at Chico, with 24 species of warblers so far (Prairie, Cape
May, Kentucky, Blackburnian, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided,
being some of the better ones).

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch closed until Friday

2021-05-18 Thread Brandon
>From Chico Basin Ranch:

Due to the high volume of rain we had last night (over 2 inches in
places!), the roads on the Chico are impassable and we will be closed to
day visitors until Friday at the earliest. If you don't hear from us,
assume we are open, and as always, check our social media (@ranchlands

for the latest info.

Best,

People who were thinking of going there this week, will need to find other
places to find migrating birds until they open again.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch upcoming vote - El Paso/Pueblo Counties

2021-02-01 Thread hiker...@gmail.com

Friends of Chico Basin Ranch,

Thank you for your support these past months.

You may be aware that the vote determining whether Chico will be kept
intact or divided is soon approaching. On *Weds, Feb 10th, the State Land
Board commissioners will vote* on whether to keep the ~87,000-acre ranch in
one piece, or lease it out as two parcels, one of ~21,000 acres and another
of ~66,000 acres.

Aiken Audubon supports keeping it intact. A few of our reasons:

· Chico is a major migratory bird pathway, with at least 346 birds
recorded.

· The ranch has very high conservation values and biodiversity. Dividing
the ranch would add roads, corrals, fencing and traffic, diluting those
values and likely causing habitat fragmentation.

· A property of this size with high-quality shortgrass prairie is rare.
With shortgrass prairie and grassland birds vanishing rapidly, this type of
landscape is greatly needed.

· Once broken up, the land is difficult to piece back together.

In addition, we believe that conservation values and financial gain can be
balanced.

The Phillips family (lessee) has openly allowed access to birders, and has
been an outstanding land steward. We’d welcome the opportunity to continue
that relationship.

We urge you to make your voice heard this one last time. *Comments must be
received by noon on Tuesday, Feb 9th.* You may send comments via this link:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdHLoANsTkJyomSRsPJm5aNH5EA-2sA8h7RlM8Df_ESURzjSQ/viewform

or mail them to the CO State Land Board Commissioners, 1127 Sherman St,

Our sincere gratitude for the effort you’ve given to protect this
remarkable property,

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch - Comments due tomorrow!

2020-11-09 Thread hiker...@gmail.com
All,

The State Land Board just notified me that, since Weds is a holiday - *comments
are due by tomorrow, Nov 10th at 12 noon.*

In addition, they've stated that they'd be willing to negotiate a layered
lease price with us (typically ~$5000 for 3-4 days/year), so we may be able
to work with them, but it's hard to say.

The main point to make is that birding, bird-banding, and, if you like,
K-12 education, be allowed to continue on the ranch. Since Chico has the
largest number of recorded birds of any other location in the state, it's
important that avian data be taken during migration months in future years.
Some of our expert birders who visit the ranch regularly are also
biologists, who are able to note what's occurring outside the banding
station with vegetation as well as species such as Mountain Plovers,
Burrowing Owls, Swift Foxes, etc.

Again, please comment by noon on Tues Nov 10th:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdHLoANsTkJyomSRsPJm5aNH5EA-2sA8h7RlM8Df_ESURzjSQ/viewform

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch action - El Paso/Pueblo counties

2020-11-08 Thread hiker...@gmail.com
Birders,

This Thursday, Nov 12th, the State Land Board (SLB)will be voting on what
"uses" will be allowed at Chico Basin Ranch when the lease expires in 2024.

The SLB is recommending that birding and/or bird-banding be handled via a
"layered lease" that Aiken Audubon or a similar organization would hold.
This would be financially out of range for us, as well as virtually
impossible to manage.

If you'd like to see birding, bird-banding and/or K-12 education continue
at Chico, *please write the SLB by 12:00 noon this Wednesday Nov 11th*, and
ask that they be "recommended" uses. We're suggesting that birders, as a
group, be allowed to work directly with the future lessee(s) to access the
ranch, rather than hold a layered lease.

You may comment online at:

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Closure Update

2020-05-01 Thread 'John D' via Colorado Birds
CO Birders :

Due to the Corvid-19 crisis Chico Basin Ranch is closed to the public through
2020 except for members of the birding , fishing or hunting clubs . Members pay
an annual fee .Former club members were invited first and all memberships are
now full. Current club members will follow stringent guidelines to minimize
risk to ranch personnel and ranch operations. These include , virtual sign in
and out , vehicle member decal stickers , staying completely clear of the HQ
complex or near any homes , no guests , wearing of gloves to open gates ,
ensure that only members are on site , no rest room facilities.
These arrangements were developed by Ranchlands management  to safely open up
the facilities in a controlled manner to a small number of visitors in order to
protect and minimizing the risk of bringing in the coronavirus or be part of
spreading it.

We trust that the birding community will understand and respect these
restrictions.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (Pueblo & El Paso County) CLOSED

2020-03-16 Thread Brandon
This is part of an e-mail from Ranchlands, which includes Chico Basin Ranch
in Pueblo and El Paso County received this morning (March 16th):

"Over the past week, we have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely.
In following the most cautious interpretations of the directives shared to
us by the CDC and local and state health departments on top of the local,
state, and federal regulations, we have made the decision to temporarily
close our properties to all visitors. As always, our number one goal is to
ensure the safety of our community, guests, and ranch family and we feel
that from this standpoint, this was the only decision to be made".

"Specifically, all of our ranches will be closed to education groups, bison
tours, birders, fishing club members, and all other visitors *through March
30*, at which point we will re-evaluate the situation".

Joe Roller has already changed the E-bird hot spots names: Chico Basin
Ranch (Pueblo County) and Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso) -- saying Closed to
Mar 30, so everyone is aware.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso, Pueblo) 5-6-19

2019-05-07 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Chico Basin Ranch was very active yesterday, at the banding station in El
Paso Co our group saw a Black & White Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler,
Orange-crowned, Yellow, Wilson's, Yellow-breasted Chat. Large numbers of
Yellow-rumped Warblers, Audubon's being the larger percentage and females
of both sub-species were more numerous than in the past couple weeks.
Plumbeous Vireo, Ringed-necked Pheasant, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Eastern
Kingbird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Gray Flycatcher and several
headache-inducing Empids rounded out the morning. At Bell Grove was our
first of the year Western Tanager.

On the way to Headquarters we heard and then saw Cassin's Sparrows (E from
the banding station, turn right on the main road, between first and second
cattle guards where the straw-colored grass thickens between the cholla)
and Lark Buntings.

The Headquarters Willows in Pueblo Co were dizzying with Yellow-rumped and
Orange-crowned Warblers, Townsend's Warbler, A vivid-colored Palm Warbler
(seemed to have more yellow on the face, similar to Eastern but not as
bright) foraging on the ground, Yellow, Wilsons, Common Yellowthroat,
Virginia Rail, Sora, Brewer's and Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Great-tailed
Grackle, Bewick's Wren, Clay-colored Sparrow, Bullock's Oriole, Dark-eyed
Junco / Pink-sided which seemed late, Gray Catbird, Curve-billed Thrasher,
Green-tailed, Canyon, and Spotted Towhees. One in our group saw what might
have been female Hooded Warbler at the smaller pond but we couldn't verify
or re-find it. HQ Pond and Rose Pond had some Long-billed Dowitchers,
Semipalmated, Least, Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers, Semipalmated Plover,
both Yellowlegs, and Wilson's Phalaropes. We saw a Forster's Tern at each
pond.

After my three companions exited I circled back to the banding station and
found two Cordilleran Flycatchers, the only Empids I could ID until I
review photos, and a fairly high-up Virginia's Warbler. A very birdy day.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Pueblo/El Paso Co. 4/29

2019-04-29 Thread Brandon
A very biirdy day at Chico Basin Ranch ($15 per person to visit ranch,
unless you've paid the Annual Birder Membership), in Pueblo and El Paso
Counties.

Bill Maynard and I were able to see over 100 species of birds on the Ranch
today. I ended up with 99 species on the Pueblo County side of the Ranch,
pretty good for late April. Bill and I watched an female type *American
Redstart* drop from the sky in the Headquarters area of Pueblo County. We
also saw the female *Black-and-white Warbler *at the banding station.
Also, Alan Ketchum spotted an *Eastern Kingbird*, which seemed early for
here on the El Paso County side of the ranch. Shorebirds were good, a
total of 15 species seen today, at Headquarters Pond and Rose Pond in
Pueblo County. The shorebird highlight were three *Whimbrel* flying around
between the HQ and Rose Pond. Swainson's Thrushes, Black-headed Grosbeak,
Lark Bunting, Wilson's Phalarope, Western Sandpiper were some other year
birds for me. There were Blue-gray Gnatcatchers everywhere, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, with Orange-crowned, Yellow, and Common Yellowthroats. The
sparrow list was pretty good, Chipping, White-crowned, Song, Lincoln's,
Lark, Brewer's. Cassin's Kingbirds, Brown Thrasher, Bullock's Oriole,
Mountain Bluebird, Townsend's Solitaire were around. A flock of American
Pipits were hanging out in the cholla cactus grasslands, which seems odd.
Other birders saw a Green-tailed Towhee and Marbled Godwit, which we didn't
see.

2018-05-20 Thread Gary Brower
El Paso County Birders,

There are a lot of birds at this site that I’d love to see, given eBird.

What’s the best way to approach the place? Time of day? Etc.

Thanks!

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Final Summary

2017-10-08 Thread Aaron Yappert
Well that's a wrap folks.

We finished up the 2017 season on Friday after a bit of a rollercoaster
week. We started the week well with 61 and 62 birds banded on Monday and
Tuesday but followed it up with only 7 birds on Wednesday as rain forced us
to close the nets after 45 minutes. Thursday was back up into the low 40s
but Friday, our last day was a wash as more rain kept us closed.

In Week 5 we banded 166 birds including our first *Brown Creeper, Cedar
Waxwing, Curve-billed Thrasher, Downy Woodpecker, *and both *Red-shafted
and Intergrade Flickers. *We also had our first *Least Flycatcher* of the
fall, the station has caught one every year since it's opening and we
managed to get this fall's bird on the last day of banding.

Season Recap:

911 birds of 60 species through 5 weeks of banding. Two station firsts:
*Baltimore
Oriole *and *Pacific Wren.*

Other Notables: *Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Sharp-shinned Hawk *(2)*,
Red-eyed Vireo *(3), *Bewick's Wren, Nashville Warbler, Virginia's Warbler,
*and a *Calliope Hummingbird* (unbanded).

*Wilson's Warblers*, as expected, made up the bulk of our birds. We banded
291 of them this fall. *Lincoln's Sparrows, Orange-crowned Warblers, and
Ruby-crowned Kinglets* also made up a large percentage of our birds.

Interesting birds that we never caught but were seen in and around the
station included a *Pygmy Nuthatch, Evening Grosbeak, Red-headed
Woodpecker, *and of course, David Tønnessen's *Tropical Kingbird. *

Thanks to everyone that came down to the station and shared our birds and
we hope to see some of you in the Spring.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Yesterday

2017-10-06 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Highlights at Chico Basin Ranch yesterday Oct 5th:

El Paso County:
At the banding station was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Golden-crowned
Kinglets, Cassin's Vireo, Broad-winged Hawk, pair of Brown Creepers. Two
Cassin's Kingbirds on the road going east from banding area.
On the dirt roads I saw two Curve-billed Thrashers, heard another two, and
saw one Sage Thrasher.

Pueblo County:
Chico doesn't get multiple shorebirds very often, so I wanted to mention at
Rose Pond there were Pectoral Sandpipers, a Spotted Sandpiper, about 25
Lesser Yellowlegs, one White-faced Ibis, and 32 Long-billed Dowitchers. At
headquarters Pond, Virginia Rail and flyover Wilson's Snipe. At Upper Twin
Pond I saw and photographed an Eastern Phoebe, took me a bit to nail down
the ID because I wasn't expecting it.

Most remarkably, while standing at headquarters willows between about 1 and
2 o'clock there was a raptor migration show in the afternoon that I can
only call a procession. Not big groups or bunched tightly, but a seemingly
non-stop fly-by of multiple Coopers Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Swainson's
Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, multiple Osprey, and Turkey Vultures. I've never
seen anything quite like it.

All day long were the awesome sound of flyover Sandhill Cranes, I saw
probably just over a thousand. On my way home about 125 landed south of
Peyton Highway in a large shallow pond, making me think that perhaps some
cranes spent the night around some water in Chico Basin.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Week 4

2017-10-01 Thread Aaron Yappert
Hey All,

It was always going to be difficult to top the Pacific Wren and
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher of last week, but two days of rain really made
this week a slow one. Numbers were mediocre Monday and Tuesday, with
midweek rain Wednesday and Thursday. Things picked back up Friday with lots
of late-morning/early afternoon action and Saturday ended up being our
busiest day of the season thus far with 72 new birds banded.

Notables for the week were our first *Golden-crowned Kinglets* (3) of the
season and a *Sharp-shinned Hawk*. Otherwise it was the usual suspects.

Season Totals: 745 Birds of 53 Species

This will be the last week of banding, and the station will run Monday
through Friday 7:00 am till 11:30 am, weather permitting. We love to share
our birds with the public so feel free to come by. Please make sure to
check in at the Ranch office before visiting the station. Lastly, be aware
that the Ranch uses the banding station as an educational opportunity for a
variety of school groups or other interested organizations so after 9 am
the station may be filled with wide-eyed youngsters.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Week 3 - YBFL, PAWR!

2017-09-23 Thread Aaron Yappert
Hey All,

We wrapped up week 3 today with a drizzle and a shortened banding session
but otherwise had a excellent week. Wilson's Warbler's are still our
primary bird, but we're starting to see the Juncos, White-crowned Sparrows,
and Chipping Sparrows move through. We banded 198 birds this week, of 28
species, including our first *Mountain Chickadee*, and *Pine Siskin* of the
fall.

More importantly, on 9/20, we caught, but left unbanded, a *Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher*! We weren't perfectly confident on the ID at the time, and
needed to release the bird to minimize stress, but after consulting with
other experts, our measurements and photos proved to be to conclusive. This
would be the 13th or 14th Colorado record if accepted. Here is our eBird
checklist with photos: https://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39320511

As if that wasn't enough, on 9/23 (today), we caught a *Pacific Wren*, a
first ever for this banding station! Again, here is the eBird report with
photos. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39349076

Season Totals:
580 Birds of 48 Species

The station runs Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am till 11:30 am. We love to
share our birds with the public so feel free to come by. Please make sure
to check in at the Ranch office before visiting the station. Lastly, be

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Week 2

2017-09-16 Thread Aaron Yappert
Hey All,

Week two just wrapped up here at Chico Basin Ranch. Some personnel changes
and very warm days saw reduced capture counts for most of the week. Friday
was our slowest of the season, only banding 15 new birds. Fortuantely,
things picked back up today with the return of some cooler temps and we
banded 49 new birds.

More importantly, we caught the station's first ever *Baltimore Oriole,
*bringing
the station total to 152 species over the last 15 years. The 75 visiting
Girl Scouts were rightfully excited by the adult male's bright plumage. We
also banded our third *Red-eyed Vireo* of the season.

Season Totals:

388 birds banded of 43 species.

The station runs Monday through Saturday, 6:30 am till 12 noon. We love to
share our birds with the public so feel free to come by. Please make sure
to check in at the Ranch office before visiting the station. Lastly, be

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Week 1

2017-09-13 Thread Aaron Yappert
Hey all,

The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies banding Station at Chico Basin Ranch has
wrapped up its first week of banding and we've had some exciting captures. The
cold front early in the week brought some good birds, but lately, with the warm
weather, things have generally tapered off later in the day.

Through 7 days of banding, we've banded 294 individuals of 40 species.

Highlights: Calliope Hummingbird (1), Red-eyed Vireo (2), Ovenbird (3),
Bewick's Wren (1), Nashville Warbler (1), and Virginia's Warbler (1).

The station runs Monday through Saturday, 6:30 am till 12 noon. We love to

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch this Saturday

2017-09-12 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

If anyone is going to Chico Basin Ranch on Saturday, can you let me know.
The birds on the Pueblo County portion of the Ranch needs to be counted for
the Pueblo County Fall Count on Saturday. We have birders counting birds
at many places throughout Pueblo County, though currently don't have anyone
to be the official counter at Chico Basin Ranch. This location always adds
a number of birds that aren't seen in other parts of the county.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso, Pueblo), Ramah Res (El Paso)

2016-08-17 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Work has really interfered with birding this summer, but today I escaped
and went to Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso Co, Pueblo Co) (fee area). Kind of
summer-ey, kind of fall-ish based on what I saw.

Highlights on the El Paso Co side were Scaled Quail, Sora, Sage thrasher,
Brown Thrasher (no Curve-billed), Spotted Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe,
Red-headed Woodpecker, Common Nighthawk, Olive-sided Flycatcher,
Ash-throated Flycatcher consuming a dragonfly, Marsh Wren, Yellow Warbler,
about 12 Wilson's Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, Lark Bunting.

On the Pueblo Co side highlights were many of the same plus Northern
Harrier, Barn Owl, Prairie Falcon, another Red-headed Woodpecker, and a
single Bank Swallow.

I went the back way (Burrowing Owl, Peyton Highway) up to Ramah Reservoir
(El Paso Co) and among other things saw White-faced Ibis, Lesser
Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope,
Black Tern, and a Peregrine Falcon ripping up the sky harassing everything
in sight.

Chico Basin Ranch was very birding today, with the best bird being a
Blue-winged Warbler at the banding station (El Paso Co.). I first saw the
bird while watching a male Orchard Oriole; I have a few shots with the
warbler and oriole in the same shot. The bird was working the shorter trees
(elms?) in the grove, and I understand several others including the Cornell
big day team were able to refind the bird later in the day.

Here are my highlights from Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) -- I birding alone
from 630am to 8am, and it was quite birdy at that time.

RE: [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch El Paso and Pueblo Counties Closed to Birding and Birders

2015-05-02 Thread Bill Maynard
Duane,

You have posted incorrect information. The electric fence at Chico HQ is to
keep lifestock in a selected pasture for a short period of time and it is not
intended to be a restriction for birders. Grab the plastic handle and unhook
the electric cord, drive across and reattach. At different times there will be
electric fences in various locations but they are all intended to delineate
pastures not restrict access. The fee you mention is correct, but it has been
this price for over five years and it is $10 with groups of 5 or more with a
leader plus there is an optional yearly fee too. School groups, with prior
arrangement with the education staff, is still free to school groups and the
instruction is excellent.

I went to Chico Basin today to try my luck at a little birding. I found that
the price of admission has gone up to $15.00 and the access has been restricted
to just the bird-banding area. I used to enjoy access to the entire complex,
but the ponds area and headquarters area is now closed to birding. The road is
roped off to keep the cattle in and keep the birders out.

If you have a long drive to get there (like I did) you might consider stopping
somewhere else that still allows access to Birders.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch , Eastern Towhee

2015-04-11 Thread 'John D' via Colorado Birds
CO birders :

I found a female Eastern Towhee this morning around the banding station
area at Chico Basin Ranch ( fee area ) , El Paso County . I had brief but
convincing view before she disappeared into the tumbleweed mountains which
still cover about 50 % of the area . Went back in the afternoon to try and
locate it but no luck . Most of the net lanes remain clear after last weeks
clearance operations . Ruby-crowned Kinglets were singing at the banding area ,
and there were Audubon's Warblers and a Hermit Thrush at HQ . Vesper Sparrows
were also migrating through .

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Pueblo/El Paso 5/23 (YT Warbler)

2014-05-23 Thread Brandon

Bill (Mr. Chico) Maynard and I were are Chico Basin Ranch this morning.  On the
Pueblo side, at the Headquarter Willows, there was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER.
A female Blackpoll Warbler was at Rose Pond.  One Northern Waterthrush was
singing at the Headquarters and another one at Rose Pond.  The Least Bittern
also continues in the marsh, in the eastern part of Rose Pond.  Shorebirds
today at Rose Pond (a Long-billed Curlew) and (Lesser Yellowlegs and Wilson's
Phalarope) at the Headquarter's Pond.  On the El Paso County side, a female
Townsend's Warbler was the best thing, we could find.  Nick Moore said, a male
Tennessee Warbler was singing earlier in the morning, at the banding station
area.  I believe, an Alder Flycatcher was banded today, perhaps the one from
yesterday.  A Red-headed Woodpecker continues north of the Casita, in El Paso
County.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Prairie Warbler, Alder Flycatcher, Least Bittern etc.

2014-05-22 Thread Brandon

Hi all,

Dan Stringer and I found a female PRAIRIE WARBLER at the Headquarters at Chico
Basin Ranch (fee area), Pueblo County today.  This was my first Prairie Warbler
in CO, since 2004 (ten years ago!).  I was able to get photos, which these are
my first photos of this species in Colorado.  This is only the 2nd Chico Basin
Ranch Prairie Warbler, since I missed the first one, I've happy to have now
seen all the species of warblers that have been found at Chico Basin Ranch.

Other highlights:

Rose Pond in Pueblo County:
LEAST BITTERN - 1 male continues to call almost all day long from the marsh
toward the east end of the pond
Northern Waterthrush - 2
Cassin's Sparrow(s) - 1 or 2 singing where John Drummond found them yesterday,
east and a little north of Rose Pond in Cholla Cactus
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 female (seen later by Bill Maynard, Jeannie Mitchell, and
myself.
no scarlet tanager

Headquarters in Pueblo County:
Northern Waterthrush - 2
American Redstart - 1 first year male

Banding Station, El Paso County:
ALDER FLYCATCHER - 1 very green back bigger empid, light complete eye ring,
gave "pip" call (Willow Flycatchers also present)
Tennessee Warbler - 1 male

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso and Pueblo Counties on 5/15

2014-05-15 Thread melgoff
Hi, Cobirders.

Jeanne and I made our way to a very birdy Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) today.
We birded the banding area, Bell's Grove, the HQs area and pond and Rose Pond.
We met up with Michael Kiessig and Kate Frost at the banding station and had a
nice time birding with them at various locations across the ranch.

El Paso County highlights included Red-headed Woodpeckers (plural) at the
banding station and Bell's Grove. We also had many Hermit and Swainson's
Thrushes, an American Redstart, Orchard Oriole, Ovenbird, Green-tailed Towhee,
a FOY Western Wood-Pewee, Ash-throated Flycatcher and a gorgeous
Yellow-breasted Chat.

Pueblo County highlights included Northern Waterthrush, Baird's Sandpiper,
Semipalmated Plover, more Red-headed Woodpeckers, our FOY Eastern Kingbird,
MacGillivray's Warbler, White-throated Sparrow. Best spot of the day went to
Michael when he found a sleeping Common Nighthawk on a tree branch next to the
HQs building.

Event of the day happened as Jeanne and I sat eating our lunch on a log by the
HQs Pond. We heard a branch fall from the tree we were sitting under and
remarked it was lucky it did not hit us (Jeanne was closer to it than I was). A
couple of minutes later we looked over to see where the branch landed, only to
discover it was NOT a branch. It was a SNAKE. Lunch over - move along!

Fun day, snake notwithstanding, and the ride out and back on Hanover Road and
the Hanover Fire Station were bonuses.

Let's Go Birding!

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Pueblo/El Paso Co. 5/13

2014-05-13 Thread Brandon

Hi all,

Today's Arkansas Valley Audubon birding trip to Chico Basin Ranch (fee area)
was pretty amazing.

There were Swainson's and Hermit Thrushes, and Gray Catbirds everywhere, like
50-100 of each perhaps!

110 species of birds were seen/heard by my group today at Chico Basin Ranch!

The best bird of the day, was a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, well seen by all and
photographed in the open on the ground at the Headquarters (Pueblo County).

A few Blackpoll and Tennessee Warblers, Northern Waterthrushes, and Ovenbirds
were the best of the 12 species of warblers.

Other goodies:  Veery, Rose-breasted Grosbeak (2), Harris's Sparrow,
White-throated Sparrow (2), Common Poorwill, Red-headed Woodpecker (3), Orchard
Oriole, Broad-winged Hawk (early in the morning, that didn't stick around for
the group).

Shorebirds at the Headquarters Pond, were a alternate plumage Sanderling, a
Red-necked Phalarope, also Western, Semipalmated, Least, Baird's and Spotted
Sandpipers.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, (El Paso/Pueblo) 5/8

2014-05-08 Thread Brandon

Bill Maynard and I thought maybe, the cold front would bring in some birds into
Chico Basin Ranch (fee area), El Paso and Pueblo Counties.  So, we met up and
birded there.  A little slower than we were hoping.

El Paso County side:
Orchard Oriole - 1 male
Gray Flycatcher - 1
Townsend's Warbler - 1 male
Yellow-breasted Chat - 1

Pueblo County side:
Summer Tanager - 2 (1 at HQ and 1 at Rose)
Northern Waterthrush - 3 (1 at HQ and 2 at Rose)
Townsend's Warbler - 1 male (at HQ)
Black-headed Grosbeak - 1 female
Sora - 1 at Rose Pond (a Starling was imitating a sora at HQ).
few shorebirds: Least Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Phalarope,
American Avocet.

Several warblers, like Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Virginia's, Orange-crowned,
MacGillivray's, Common Yellowthroat, and Wilson's.  Plumbeous Vireo was the
only vireos today.

For you SNAKE people:  one red racer (coachwip) and one large bull snake (that
Bill almost stepped on!).  One garter snake too, no rattlesnakes, though they
are out there, so be watching, while walking around at Chico.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch and E-bird reports

2014-04-20 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival ' via Colorado Birds

Just a quick reminder, people who are submitting bird checklists to e-bird from
Chico Basin Ranch, need to submit at least two checklists.  One for the Pueblo
County side and one for El Paso County side.  Each county has its own filter.

The Pueblo County side of the Ranch, includes the Headquarters area, Rose Pond,
May Camp, Upper Twin Pond, Lower Twin Pond, and all of the southern part of the
Ranch.

The El Paso County side of the Ranch, that most people visit, is the RMBO
Banding Station, Casita, Bell Grove.

The County line, is the road at the cattle guard that goes straight east.
North of this cattle guard and road is El Paso County everything South is
Pueblo County.  This is the FIRST cattle guard north of the Headquarters.

There is a map of birding locations of the Ranch, on Chico Basin Ranch website.

Also, the Northern Bobwhite, Ring-necked Pheasant, and Chukar found at Chico
Basin Ranch, are released birds for hunting, therefore NOT countable as wild
birds.  Hopefully the e-bird reviewers aren't accepting these birds, as wild
birds.  My group saw Northern Bobwhites today, though I did not include them in
my e-bird reports, since the birds aren't going on my year list or anything,
since they aren't wild/countable birds.

Hopefully Chris Wood from E-bird, can explain why it is important to report
sightings to e-bird, to the correct county.

Thanks,

Brandon Percival

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso/Pueblo Cos. 4/14

2014-04-14 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Bill Maynard, Glenn Walbek, and I were all able to see and photograph the
Yellow-throated Warbler this morning, first found yesterday by Tyler Stuart and
friends (great find!).  The bird is a male, since, when Glenn was arriving, the
bird decided to start singing!  He sang quite nicely several times.  The bird
was finding food in the cottonwood trees along the trunk and branches, above
the banding station at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area), El Paso County.  There
were quite a few other birds here as well:  at least three Eastern Bluebirds,
two Mountain Chickadees, a Brown Creeper, four or so Spotted Towhees,
"Gray-headed" Dark-eyed Juncos, a Townsend's Solitaire, a Downy Woodpecker,
among other birds.

On the Pueblo side of the Ranch, one female "Audubon's" Yellow-rumped Warbler
was at the Headquarters Willows, also two Spotted Towhees, and more
"Gray-headed" Dark-eyed Juncos were in this area too.

On the Headquarters Pond in Pueblo County, there were six yellowlegs, 3 Greater
and 3 Lesser Yellowlegs (finally I see a Yellowlegs in CO this year, am I the
last one?).  There were also some Vesper Sparrows around here as well.

I forgot to mention previously, last Tuesday, Bill and I found and photographed
a Lapland Longspur, on the Pueblo County side of the Ranch, south of Rose Pond.

Photos of the warbler can be seen on flickr site (this one shows a bug its
mouth):  https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/13858235575/

Good birding,

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso/Pueblo Cos. 3/25

2014-03-25 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Bill Maynard and I decided to meet up at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in
eastern El Paso/eastern Pueblo Counties, (http://www.chicobasinranch.com/) at
8am this morning, and birded until 1pm.  We found 50 bird species.

El Paso County side of the Ranch (around the banding station mostly):
Harris's Sparrow - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Western Bluebird - 1 male
Mountain Chickadee - 1 seen and photographed (this is the more regular
chickadee at this location, Black-capped Chickadees are accidental at Chico
Basin Ranch).
Downy Woodpecker - 1
Curve-billed Thrasher - 1 singing

Pueblo County side of the Ranch (Headquarters, Rose Pond, Upper Twin Pond):
Cinnamon Teal - 5
Say's Phoebe - 1
Virginia Rail - 1
Horned Grebe - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 1 (rocky mountain race)
Marsh Wren - 1
13 species of waterfowl
Killdeer - a lot of them in the flooded alfalfa field, south of Rose Pond

Mountain Bluebirds were moving around in good numbers in both counties, and the
usual for Chico Basin Ranch, Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were in both counties as
well.  Still pretty early for most things, we looked in areas for Burrowing
Owls, Mountain Plovers, and Sage Thrashers, and didn't find any today.

Good birding,

Headquarters and one photographed at Rose Pond.  We also, saw a Townsend's
Warbler and Red-naped Sapsucker at Headquarters.  On the El Paso County side, a
Calliope Hummingbird, as well as Broad-tailed Hummingbirds were coming into the
feeders at the banding station.  In the trees around the banding station, there
were a couple of Townsend's Solitaires, Western Wood-Pewee, Hammond's
Flycatcher, Cassin's Kingbird, among other birds.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, RMBO banding Wednesday

2013-09-05 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

Today was the first official day for RMBO bird banding at CBR, El Paso Co side.
Along with 80 4th graders, we got SLAMMED by an arrival of sparrows about 930.
Over a 200 m front we probably had 75 birds in nets at the same time. With this
influx we tallied about 125 birds caught today. The big flock was mostly
composed of Chipping and Brewer's Sparrows. We don't recall having more than a
handful of Brewer's Sparrows in a SEASON, and we probably had over 25 today.

Other than that, we had several Wilson's, Yellow, Orange-crowned, and
MacGillivray's Warblers, Swainson's Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, YB Chat, and
several W Wood-Pewees.

Operations are running six days/week, M-Sat, through October 5. See you there,

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso/Pueblo Cos. 6/1

2013-06-01 Thread Brandon K. Percival
As promised, here is a list of things, that Bill Maynard and I saw at Chico
Basin Ranch today, that seemed odd for June 1st for this location.

Ducks:
Lesser Scaup, Canvasback (1), and American Wigeon

Other waterbirds:
White-faced Ibis (1)

Shorebirds:
Solitary (1), Spotted, Semipalmated, White-rumped (<20), Stilt (1) Sandpipers,
Wilson's Phalarope.

Passerines (of note):
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1), Broad-tailed Hummingbird (male), Olive-sided, Willow
(singing), Cordilleran (singing) Flycatchers, Warbling and Plumbeous (singing)
Vireos, Hermit (1) and Swainson's Thrush (200+), Bank and Northern Rough-winged
Swallows, Yellow-rumped "Audubon" (a few singing males, as well as females),
Wilson's and MacGillivray's Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chat, Lincoln's,
White-crowned, Chipping, and Savannah Sparrows, Green-tailed and Spotted
Towhees, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak.  Most of these birds breed
only in the mountains (except for the cuckoo and the swallows), and certainly
not at Chico Basin Ranch, on the plains.  Migration is still going on for sure.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch 5/24 & 5/25

2013-05-25 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Last night's full moon and west winds, pushed most of the rare eastern migrants
away from Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) today.

There was a female American Redstart at the banding station in El Paso County.
There was a singing young male American Redstart (sounding like a bay-breasted
warbler) or two at the Headquarters, a female Townsend's Warbler, and a singing
Red-eyed Vireo there too in Pueblo County.  At Rose Pond, also in Pueblo County
an adult male American Redstart was seen today as well, and the Horned Grebe
continues as well.  There were some singing Willow Flycatchers at the banding
station too.  Red-headed Woodpeckers were at the Headquarters and the banding
station.

With Westerly winds in the forecast for the while, I'm guessing the rare
eastern migrants there, might be few and far between for the rest of the month,
though I'm sure there will be a few more "goodies" before spring migration is
completely over.

-

Here are yesterday's highlights from Chico Basin Ranch.

Headquarters (Pueblo County):
Great Crested Flycatcher - 1 (photographed)
Red-eyed Vireo - 1
American Redstart - 2 females/imm.
Black-and-white Warbler - 1 female
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 singing male
Veery - 1

Rose Pond (Pueblo County):
Cape May Warbler - 1 male continues
Townsend's Warbler - 1 adult male (seen by others -- I've missed this bird
three days in a row now)
Horned Grebe - 1 continues

Banding Station (El Paso County):
American Redstart - 2 females/imm.
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 male
Singing Willow and Least Flycatchers

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso/Pueblo Cos. 5/23

2013-05-23 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Spring migrants continue to be coming through in good numbers.  Many birders
were at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in Pueblo and El Paso Counties today.
Here is a summary of birds that were seen.  There may have been other birds
that were heard singing, though weren't actually seen I don't think.

El Paso County (banding station area mostly):
PAINTED BUNTING - 1 female type bird
Northern Parula - 1
American Redstart - 2 female type birds
Veery - 1
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 1
Common Poorwill - 1

Pueblo County (Rose Pond):
CAPE MAY WARBLER - 1 male
Yellow-throated Vireo - 1
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 female
Townsend's Warbler - 1 male
Red-eyed Vireo - 1

Pueblo County (Headquarters):
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 male
Veery - 1
Red-eyed Vireo - 2
American Redstart - 2 female/imm.
Common Poorwill - 1

I'm sure there are other birds I'm forgetting, there were 15+ birders at Chico
today, and not everyone saw everything.  There were lots of Yellow Warblers at
the Ranch today, one small willow tree at the HQ, had like 20 of them at one
time.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Pueblo/El Paso Cos. 5/15

2013-05-15 Thread Brandon K. Percival
The best day of the spring so far at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) for warblers.
I saw 15 species of warblers today (missed Chat, which I saw last time I was
there).  A few other birders were also present, and saw most of these birds.

Headquarters, Pueblo County:
Western Palm Warbler - 1
Nashville Warbler - 1 male
Ovenbird -1 singing
Northern Waterthrush - 1 singing
Plumbeous Vireo - 1 (seen by Bob Brown and Dan Stringer)

Rose Pond, Pueblo County:
Northern Parula - 1 male
American Redstart - 1 female tpye

Northern Waterthrush - 1
White-throated Sparrow - 1
Townsend's Warbler - 1 female (this species is typically rare in the state in
spring, not so much this spring, this is at least my 4th of the spring,
depending on how many there have been in Pueblo City Park).

Banding Station, El Paso County:
Bobolink - 1 singing male
Chestnut-sided Warbler - 1 male (banded)
Ovenbird - 1 (banded)
White-throated Sparrow - 1
Least Flycatcher - 1 (banded)
Ruby-throated/Black-chinned Hummingbird - 1 male (I'm 95% sure it was a
Ruby-throated, briefly it showed red throat, it wasn't making any noise with
the wings, and it almost flew into a banding net).

I saw my first of the spring Western Wood-Pewees, Willow Flycatcher, and Common
Nighthawk as well.

Lots of birds to look at around all the locations in the morning hours today.

Birders,

As a last note of the birds at CBR on 10/24: there was also a gray, 1st
winter (see Sibley) Northern Shrike below the dam and a (very) Large, Gray
Falcon in the area. Yes, there is also a Prairie Falcon in the area which
was much lighter, smaller and had black axillaries. Bob Shade and I were
not able to get a good look at the underwings of this large falcon but I did
not see dark axillaries on it from my angle.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso/Pueblo) - sparrows vs. duck hunting

2012-10-23 Thread Bill Maynard
COBirders,

Duck season starts Wednesday at Chico Basin Ranch and in Colorado's
Southeast Zone of the Central Flyway. The season is already underway at
other locations in Colorado where you may bird. For those still wanting to
look for the Nelson's Sparrow after today, Wednesday may not be the best
choice. Because of the hunting fee, there aren't many duck hunters at Chico
but Upper Twin Pond, especially the dam area, is one of the favorite duck
hunting areas. The areas and dates below are only for ducks and coots.
Light and dark geese have their own dates. There could be more duck hunting
at Chico this year because of the severe drought in other parts of the
state.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Migration.

2012-08-19 Thread John D

 CO Birders :

Chico Basin Ranch , Pueblo County Section , ( fee area ) had a few early
migrants today , with Great Crested Flycatcher , American Redstart and Least
Flycatcher being the highlights around Ranch HQ .Joined by numerous Yellow
Warblers , a few Wilson's Warbler , many blackbirds , Chipping Sparrows , up to
5 Sage Thrashers south of Rose Pond. An adult Peregrine Falcon made a pass
over the ducks and shorebirds on HQ pond with no success . Bird activity away
from the riparian areas is slim to none because of the poor condition of the
grassland from the drought.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso & Pueblo Cos. 5/24

2012-05-24 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Bill Maynard, John Drummond, and I birded Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) today.
Since, a cold front went through last night, there were some migrants around
today.  Swainson's Thrushes (with just a few Hermit Thrushes) were all over the
banding station (El Paso County), also here, there were two American Redstarts
(one singing first year male), also singing Willow, Cordilleran, and
Ash-throated Flycatchers, non-singing Least, Hammond's, and Olive-sided
Flycatchers, lots of Western Wood-Pewees, a few Western Tanagers and a few
Black-headed Grosbeaks, both Warbling and Plumbeous Vireos were seen, the only
warblers, besides for the Redstarts, were Yellow and Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Also, in the banding station area, were Lincoln's and White-crowned Sparrows,
Western and Eastern Kingbirds, Blue Grosbeaks, and Lazuli Buntings.
Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were present here as well.

At the Headquarters Pond (Pueblo County), there were four or more White-rumped
Sandpipers, two Willets, and Wilson's Phalarope, as well as White-faced Ibis,
and usual three species of teal and Shovelers, and Mallards.  There were a few
migrant passerines at both Headquarters and Rose Pond, though nothing really
different than what was mentioned above.

Spring migration here in Colorado may not be quite over yet, unless you are
heading out of the state soon, like me.  I won't have any more chances to get
to CBR this spring.

Good birding,

2012-05-09 Thread Brandon K. Percival
I found a singing male Blackpoll Warbler and a singing male Northern Parula at
the banding station (fee area) at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso County this
morning.  Also, male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were there as well.
Rose Pond at Chico Basin Ranch, Pueblo County, there was a Northern Waterthrush
and Least Flycatcher.  The Headquarters area didn't have many migrant landbirds
this morning.  Neither location had many shorebirds either.  Things change
daily out there.

Veery - 1 (same area, only seen early in the morning I believe)
Hooded Warbler - 1 singing male, both early and later in the day (banding

Ovenbird - 1 singing (banding station), both early and later in the day
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 1 male at the casita in morning
Northern Waterthrush - 1 in the wet area with willows, between the banding
station and the Bell Grove.
Other things:  Orchard Oriole, Ash-throated Flycatchers, Clay-colored Sparrows,
MacGillivray's Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Olive-sided Flycatcher,
Black-chinned Hummingbird, Swainson's and Hermit Thrushes, Wilson's Warbler,
Gray Catbirds, Spotted and Green-tailed Towhees, Chipping and Lark Sparrows,
Yellow-rumped, Orange-crowned, and Yellow Warblers, among other things.  We saw
and heard the Northern Bobwhites as well, they are released birds.

Pueblo County portion (Headquarters, Rose Pond and Alfalfa field):
Northern Waterthrush - 1 at Rose Ponds (briefly)
Least Flycatcher - 1 at Headquarter Willows
Blue Grosbeak - 1 male at Rose Pond

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso County

2012-04-24 Thread Gary Koehn
I did not find the Kentucky Warbler this morning and in fact warbler activity
was rather slow with only one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and one ORANGED CROWN at
headquarters.

Rose pond is as low as I have ever seen it and full of weeds at about July
levels. It did see several shore birds including WILSON'S PHALAROPE, GLOSSY
IBIS, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, AMERICAN AVOCET, LESSER AND GREATER YELLOWLEGS. I saw
a flock of 7 WILLET at Headquarter's pond. Shorebirds at Chico should be good
this year as a result of the low levels of the ponds.

Hi all,
Since I received e-mails from people asking is there any point to post
sightings early in the morning from Chico Basin Ranch, that most people
wouldn't go chase, like Black-throated Gray Warbler and Northern Parula. The
main reason I posted early, is to let the word out that there are interesting
migrants currently at Chico, so everyone who reads the post early enough (who
might be wanting to know, if there might be birds around today), can perhaps go
out to their local migrant spots, and maybe find more interesting migrants. I
know very
few people will actually chase a bird at Chico, the day it is found, though I
think it is important to let cobirds know, when interesting migrants are
around. Hopefully this explains it. I did hear one person did see the
Kentucky Warbler fairly late in the afternoon yesterday!
Some rare migrants seem to be coming through right now, and I'm guessing it
will be a very interesting weekend on the eastern plains of Colorado, with the
unsettled weather.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Sunday

2012-04-22 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBIrders,

Nancy Gobris and I set up the RMBO banding station today, to begin banding
tomorrow. Lots of leafing-out in the Russian Olives, we think a little earlier
than usual.

Saw neither the Lucy's Warbler nor Hooded Warbler, but there were several
Myrtle/Yellow-rumps, and at least one male Blackpoll Warbler in the grove
around the banding station. Also flushed several times, an adult Long-eared
Owl. We'll look more seriously tomorrow.

Banding is scheduled M-Sat, weather permitting, for the next month.

See you there soon,

any uncommon warblers. On my way out I stopped to escort a large bull snake
off of the road. It was a very unhappy snake.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch (Pueblo/El Paso Cos.) 5/26 (Scarlet Tanager etc.)

2011-05-26 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Kara Carragher (KC), Bill Maynard (BM), John Drummond (JD), and I (BKP) birded
Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in Pueblo and El Paso Counties today.  Here are
the highlights, hopefully I don't forget anything, if I do, hopefully the
others will let you know.

Pueblo County:

SCARLET TANAGER - 1 female at Rose Pond (KC, BM, BKP) -- photographed
Northern Parula - 1 female at Rose Pond (JD)
Northern Waterthrush - 2 at Rose Pond
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 1 at Rose Pond
Magnolia Warbler - 1 male (found by KC, seen by all), 1 female at Headquarters
area (BKP, JD)
No sign of the Arctic Tern or most of the shorebirds that were around yesterday.

El Paso County:
PHILADELPHIA VIREO - 1 singing 8am at banding station, and found again around
230pm (all observers) -- photographed
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER - 1 male at banding station (all observers) -- photographed
Magnolia Warbler - 1 male at banding station (all observers, found by KC)
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1 singing male at banding station (JD)
Nashville Warbler - 1 at banding station (JD)
Veery - 2 at banding station (all observers)
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 singing male at the Eagle Grove area (BKP, KC, BM)
Northern Waterthrush - 1 near Big Willow, near banding station (KC, BM, BKP)
Ovenbird - 1 singing at banding station (all observers)
American Redstart - 2 (1 singing) at banding station (all observers)

Other warblers around today were:  Yellow, Virginia's, Yellow-rumped, Wilson's,
MacGillivray's, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow-breasted Chat.  This is a group
total of 16 species of warblers.  There were Warbling and Plumbeous Vireos, and
lots of thrush, Swainson's mostly, with a few Hermit, no luck with a
Gray-cheeked.  We identified a few empidonax, singing Least and Willow, also
Dusky and maybe Hammond's.

Lots of migrants and breeding birds around still.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, Blue-winged warbler

2011-05-06 Thread Jxdrummo
CO Birders :

The Denver Audubon Group relocated the ( banded ) Blue-winged
Warbler this afternoon at the banding station area , Chico Basin Ranch ( fee
area
) , El Paso County . Feeding high up in cottonwood trees on insects
attracted to the catkins. Interestingly this male was singing the dawn
secondary
song ( listen to Sibley, Stokes does not have it ) and that not very well ,
a song that I have never previously heard in my days back east. Other
migrants were in general low , Cassin's Kingbird near Holmes , Western Tanager
banding station and HQ , Bullock's Oriole at banding station and Rose Pond
, Plumbeous Vireo at the banding station, MacGillivray's Warblers at
banding station and HQ willows and plenty of Yellow-rumps , Ruby-crowned
Kinglets
. Shorebirds could only find Spotted Sandpipers and Wilson's Phalarope.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO banding 11 Sep 2010

2010-09-11 Thread brian_gibb...@juno.com
Hi Cobirders

Despite my dire predictions we had a great day here at Chico. There was a
massive exodus (just one recapped bird from yesterday, a Wilson's Warbler) and
a large arrival last night. We banded a couple Swainson's Thrushes (rare in
fall). There were at least a couple Barn Owls still around. A couple Cooper's
Hawks kept the birds on edge much of the morning. Here are the numbers.

Birds Banded:
Downy Woodpecker 1
Western Wood-Pewee 7
Hammond's Flycatcher 2
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Cordilleran Flycatcher 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1
House Wren 4
Swainson's Thrush 2
Hermit Thrush 5
American Robin 5
Gray Catbird 4
Brown Thrasher 4
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 59
Western Tanager 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Lazuli Bunting 1

COBiriders,

I birded the Chico Basin Ranch this morning (banding demo free, all other
areas fee). Although I birded at the Banding Station too, the banders
will describe their considerable haul there.

shorebird area however) as water is being taken now for irrigation.

Long-billed Dowitcher - 5
Wilson's Phalarope - 10
Lesser Yellowlegs - 6
Greater Yellowlegs - 1

Black Tern - 2 juveniles

Woodpeckers
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER - 1 juvenile
Ladder-backed Woodpecker - 1 (resident)

Empids
Hammond's Flycatcher - 4 (if I.D.'ed correctly)
"Western" Flycatcher - 1
Western Wood-Pewee - >14

Warblers
Northern Waterthrush - 1
Wilson's Warbler - ~20
Common Yellowthroat - 3

Sparrows
Lincoln's Sparrow - 3
Chipping Sparrow - >100
White-crowned Sparrow - 1
Brewer's Sparrow - ~ 9
Clay-colored Sparrow - 3
Lark Sparrow - ~ 12
Savannah Sparrow ~13
Lark Bunting - >20

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO banding 10 Sep 2010

2010-09-10 Thread brian_gibb...@juno.com
Hi Cobirders

We had a big arrival of numerous species last night. As is typical for this
area, Wilson's Warblers predominated. Again the Barn Owls were about. We also
had 2 Olive-sided Flycatchers right next to each other. The number of warblers
flitting around in the trees was impressive. The weeds, bushes and trees were
crowded.

Birds Banded 140, of 21 species
Western Wood-Pewee 4
Willow Flycatcher 1
Dusky Flycatcher 3
Cordilleran Flycatcher 5
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1
House Wren 13
Hermit Thrush 1
American Robin 6
Gray Catbird 1
Brown Thrasher 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 1
Townsend's Warbler 2
American Redstart 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 3
Wilson's Warbler 83
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Western Tanager 3
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 4
Black-headed Grosbeak 2

A great day. As usual a large dropoff can be expected tomorrow, but a new
arrival could happen too. Many of today's birds were devoid of fat so they
might need to spend a couple days here.

Good birding,
Brian Gibbons

We ran a few nets today as we were setting up. There were birds around but it
didn't seem as busy as yesterday.

Cooper's Hawk 1
Cordilleran Flycatcher 2
Red-breasted Nuthatch 2
Gray Catbird 3
Brown Thrasher 2 and one recap
House Wren 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Townsend's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 10
Western Tanager 2
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

Just this afternoon I found an American Redstart (female-plumaged) and a
Cassin's Vireo that Drummond had seen earlier with a group.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Tuesday

2010-09-07 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

If you haven't heard about the landscaping project at CBR this summer, this is
just a warning - it looks very different around the banding station. A crew
has been destroying most of the olives outside the "traditional" grove, so that
as of today, no olives stand between the banding station grove and the Casita.

Brian Gibbons and I worked on setting up nets today for the fall banding, and
are looking for new spots since we lost many of the newer lanes. While we
might have expected this would be the death knell for birds this season, there
was surprisingly a LOT of movement in the middle of the day, and it was getting
quite birdy in the heat of the day. Saw several Townsend's and Wilson's
Warblers, and we weren't really looking.
Several pewees and Chipping Sparrows, and a heard Lazuli Bunting were around
the house, Lark Buntings on the fence along the road out, and a few kingbirds
and thrashers as well. Could be good tomorrow!

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso and Pueblo Counties

2010-08-08 Thread MARIE C LEE
Jeannie Mitchell and I spent a few hours at Chico Basin Ranch this morning (fee
area). In addition to the summer birds including a singing/fluttering Cassin's
Sparrow (EPC), we saw 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 3 Dowitchers I tried to turn into
Short-billed's but I just don't know enough about them, and a Baird's Sandpiper
in Pueblo County. A nice Prairie Falcon was on a power pole outside the ranch.
Southbound migration is arriving at Chico.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch 24 May 2010

2010-05-24 Thread brian_gibb...@juno.com
Hi Cobirders

Bill Maynard and I looked around the Chico this am. Pretty Quiet. Singing
Willow Flycatchers were around headquarters as was a singing sy male American
Redstart. Sadly migration seems to be tailing off, but there should be a few
goodies turning up now that I am departing the ranch. We also saw an immature
Golden Eagle this morning. Yesterday afternoon I saw the "handoff". A male N
Harrier came in with food and the female comes off the nest. She circles up
under him and he drops some tasty mammal morsel which she snags with lighting
speed mid-air.

Come support the bird banding and the ranch education 12 June 2010. Corb Lund
and the Hurtin' Albertans will be playing a fund-raising concert to benefit the
ranch non-profit. Details at
