I would publish the current mdtext, and then see the next changes on staging. Maybe a bit of an explanation. I published the mdtext but it gets converted to html on publication. The mdtext had been in stating for a few days. This is still only a working document since it is not the one being linked, and I thought for non-committers, this way might be easier. Maybe I'm wrong about that. I am mostly on a KISS (Keep it simple stupid) creating '-new' documents are mostly a bad idea since is not surprise we have a lot of '*-new' documents somewhat polluting the site tree. no problem, they can be deleted. Non-commiters can always post their version on their hosts (I try to use people.apache.org) but there is always space on google drive, or github to put your version with your tweaks, maybe is a good test case to move to GIT and work with branches. I suggest checking out gitflow for a good workflow system when dealing with git commiters. This would *maybe* solve a problem we don't have now. ;-) Sorry, but this dicussion lead to nowhere. So, should we really remove these? I would be opposed to that. We never really deployed these fully, but just used them for a couple of weeks to test the reaction. They are called from the update notification service, so if we change the URL we'll need to update it there as well. I think legacy/thankyou.html page is hard coded in OOo installs. It is called after installing. So we don't want to change that URL. OK In the last 30 days we've had: 45,713 hits to legacy/thankyou.html And zero hits to untranslated.html or eol-nl.html. Great, you have just answered my next questions (how many hits and which page should survive) ;-). if nobody objects I will delete the both 0 hits pages and combine the whole content + updates in legacy/thankyou.html. The download is OK and most recent but not localized. Therefore the overall status in unmaintained. Yes, big work to get an initial status for all languages and parts. But could be worth to get an overview and every new interested volunteer can see with one view what's up. Does this help? Should we expand it to all languages? As a design concern I will preffer using images than labels. It makes the user identify better the nature. Alternatively we could use Glyphicons usually can make somewhat of a cleaner code, and also are more smaller than a pixel-base image. If you (or others) think different the table can consists of only 2 columns for overall status and homepage. Example: Finnish: The initial homepage is OK but not localized. The download is OK and most recent but not localized. Therefore the overall status in unmaintained. Yes, big work to get an initial status for all languages and parts. But could be worth to get an overview and every new interested volunteer can see with one view what's up. Does this help? Should we expand it to all languages? [WEBSITE] How to localize a website?
I've created a readme.txt in the xx/ directory [1] which is used as template. It describes what to do to localize webpages like .../xx/index.html and .../xx/download/index.html. It's new and it can contain gaps of course. So, when you see something that is missing please let me know and I'll add it. Differentiating between the website status and the distribution status is definitely a good move. I know this isn't exactly what you showed but maybe we can think along that line. What if we If we just showed website status and distribution status? it seems for you distribution is more than the pure download. What exactly? We should write this down in a sentence to make it clear. And, to make things more simple, just list the websites as either maintained or not maintained. What specific aspect of this is important of course, but if volunteers are interested in helping, I'm sure they would just check out the sites themselves to see what might be done. Right, it should be kept simple. We might want to include a small definition and just say that a website status of not maintained could mean a variety of issues but primarily the fact that the website home page or downlaod page has not been localized for the language, or that the download information is presenting the correct information. I think you are also right here. Marcus I think the downlaod drop-down box is a HUGE step forward for our user base, no doubt about it. But I really LIKE other.html as well. I hope we can find some middle ground on keeping it. Emanuele's code here has got me thinking about investigating the CMS/Django approach more. with Alexandro's suggestion it can get really nice. However, I don't know why we should keep a large table with links when the whole functionality now existing in the greeen download box. If it's the text around the table we can keep into and turn the page into an information webpage. Hi all, I would like to know what you think about to add a logo graphic to our download webpage to make sure it's a safe and trusted download. Of course it has to be free of charge and a suiteable license. To tell it short: The virus alert is a false-positive - especially if it's Norton 360. OpenOffice is not infected by a virus but the anti-virus software has a wrong infection detection. The following is an excerpt from an answer for another mail: 1. Disable the anti-virus software before downloading OpenOffice. Only download from the official source: http://www.openoffice.org/download/ 2. For download, do not select open, select Save and place in a memorable location (your Download folder, for example). 3. Use any of the procedures for verifying the Download. This code is not signed, so you will have to use either the PGP or the MD5/SHA verifications. See here for procedures: http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html 4. In your anti-virus software, see if there is a setting where it will only remove or quarantine files after confirmation by you. This will let you over-rule it in the future, verifying the file yourself instead. I think untranslated.html was used to notify pre AOO versions of OpenOffice where we did not have support for their language in AOO. If we had support for their language we would just offer them a normal update notification. But for the others we sent them to this page. The eol-nl.html version was used in a similar way, but a slightly stronger message when we declared EOL on OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 and earlier. This can be combined, I think. We never really deployed these fully, but just used them for a couple of weeks to test the reaction. They are called from the update notification service, so if we change the URL we'll need to update it there as well. I think legacy/thankyou.html page is hard coded in OOo installs. It is called after installing. So we don't want to change that URL. OK In the last 30 days we've had: 45,713 hits to legacy/thankyou.html And zero hits to untranslated.html or eol-nl.html. Hi all, I've finished some more work on the download webpages. Because you can benefit from these changes for your localized website you may want to know how to use it. - Download webpage: 1. All the colored boxes + navigation bar + logo section can be defined to be shown or not. If they should be shown, the text can be localized in msg_prop_l10n_XX.js. For an example see the source code of http://www.openoffice.org/xx/download/index.html;. - Download scripting: 1. Moved all variables and functions into an single global object DL. Now only this object is in the global scope of the browser window and no longer every little variable (best practices in JS scripting). 2. The same for the localization strings in msg_prop_l10n_XX.js (global object l10n). 3. An error text is shown when choosing not suitable select box options (e.g., OS X 32-bit + any language + 4.1.0). If it's not possible to translate the English wording properly into your language, then (more or less) free text can be defined. See the variables l10n.dl_error_custom_1_text until l10n.dl_error_custom_4_text (depends on the exception case) in msg_prop_l10n_XX.js. - Select boxes: 1. The list items can be localized. The current strings are in English and can be found in msg_prop_l10n_XX.js. See the variables l10n.dl_green_box_select_box_os_values, l10n.dl_green_box_select_box_language_values and l10n.dl_green_box_select_box_version_values in msg_prop_l10n_XX.js. 2. Furthermore, in the language select box the list items have a tool tip (native language name + ISO code). BTW: I'm now subscribed to the L10N mailinglist. I personally don't like too much very tall fixed headers, they tend to take up a lot of vertical space. of course, I don't meant to fix the current header. First try to reduce its height (row for breadcrumb, space between breadcrum and carousel, top menu, etc. Then if it's still too high fix just some upper parts. Hm, I don't see a 2-line menu but the nice hamburger icon at top right that is known from mobile devices. That looks good. Do you know the Web Developer add-on for Firefox? I've discovered that it shows the layout in specific screen resolutions (from 320x480 to 1024x768) for different phone anf tablet devices. Every small resolution has just a horizontal scrollbar and no vertical one. However the scrollbar bottons are disabled, they can be enable throught he CSS for a complete understanding of how JScrollPane() works you can read the Plugin project page. http://jscrollpane.kelvinluck.com/#download I did a quick fix and you can see the scrolling arrows, in case people are confused about the scrollbar. thanks, this looks better. However, the scrollbar is now going over the arrows when getting to the top or bottom. But I understand that it's just a demo webpage. Colors are OK, and indeed better than the current dull gray we all dislike. But I agree this is not immediately recognizable as a scrollbar, so (provided we need it; we could actually shorten the content and do without) this is not very understandable for visitors. Regulating content could be harder that it sounds, also is pretty horrible the way the scrollbar is implemented at the moment using nested scrollbars. Then you should delete them. ;-) Definetly not the best solution. I am recomending also a carrousel pane, which will allow a more dynamic slide-show like flow of the information, using the showcase jQuery plugin: http://showcase.awkwardgroup.com/ There are a lot of frameworks that offer a carousel. To tell it short: The virus alert is a false-positive. OpenOffice is not infected by a virus but the anti-virus software has a wrong defection. The following is an excerpt from an answer for another mail: 1. Disable the anti-virus software before downloading OpenOffice. Only download from the official source: http://www.openoffice.org/download/ 2. For download, do not select open, select Save and place in a memorable location (your Download folder, for example). 3. Use any of the procedures for verifying the Download. This code is not signed, so you will have to use either the PGP or the MD5/SHA verifications. See here for procedures: http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html 4. In your anti-virus software, see if there is a setting where it will only remove or quarantine files after confirmation by you. This will let you over-rule it in the future, verifying the file yourself instead. I've donwloaded both files and got a correct MD5 hash value at the first time. Can anybody else confirm a virus infection or a wrong MD5 hash? OpenOffice 4.1.0 was released at April, 29th and got no reports about real infections up to now. Therefore I suspect that the virus scanner has seen a false positive. Just the sorting is not intuitive... Maybe sort by Name (with
non-Latin at the end) or by language code?
Mozilla has a language listbox at the bottom of their site, and
they sort via ISO codes.
Wikipedia as a language list at the side, it seems that both sort the
list according to the Latin transliteration, or something similar.
They sort alphabetically via the native language names. But it's
followed not really consequently.
For OpenOffice I would suggest to do the sorting via ISO code. As they
are shown in the list it's understandable for all - also for non-native
speakers.
BTW:
Tal, I know that Hebrew is working from right-to-left. However, it
doesn't look good compared to the other list items. Would you mind to
change it to left-to-right?

It's just me looking at the wrong place or /ooo-site/ doesn't use templates like /site/, but pages are created one by one? Yes, nearly. Except for the header and footer area. Because the changes I did, require each page to have stuff added to the head (jQuery and bootstrap). It may be a bit more work than what you were foreseeing. I could some of the features like the apache exe install file but couldn’t get it to run after using 7-zip to extract it to it’s own directory and folder, because it won’t install an archive file. I am at my wits end as what to do now! I am running Win 7 Ultimate, 64 bit (bitlocker enabled). I am using Yahoo enhanced for IE 11 as my browser. All security and popup blocker features turned off. But still it won’t install. I really like your product and have used it before but due to a serious computer crash and having to get a new computer I have not been able to get your program, please help me get your program back it’s great and I really want to use it again. I'm not sure if you have downloaded the software already completely and successfully, So, maybe it's a good idea to verify the integrity of the download file. When you still have the file and know where it is saved on your PC, you can read here [1] how to verify the file with hash values. For your ongoing problems while installing or using the software you could report the problem in our users mailing list [2] or support forums [3]. Here are many more people that could analyze the problem and give you tips towards a solution. Please note that these are all volunteers that don't get any money for this work. Diese Guidelines sind quasi international gültig und werden heutzutage schon im Informatik-Studium zumindest mal angerissen bzw. angesprochen. Irgendwo im Wiki wird sich das sicher auch für OpenOffice finden. So ganz nebenbei: Apache lebt davon, daß die Leute machen und nicht nur reden. Abstimmen über Sachen ist OK. What you've done by isolating the box creations is good if we want to enable them or not for certain sites. Hi all, a new idea came into my mind: In the past we had some events where an announcement was helpful. So, we added some hardcoded text on top to a webpage (e.g., Wiki is down). To get this done in a more dynamically way I created this: http://ooo-site.staging.apache.org/index_alert.html The following is be definable: - A trigger to show the box or not. - The backgound color for the box. - The headline text. - A text part that does not work as a link. - A text part that works as a link to more information or solution. And, since we have roughly 35 native language download areas that need attention, I think we need to look to simplicity to expedite the situation. You can download the software to your Chromebook. But I think that is not your real intention. Chromebooks [1] don't have a traditional operating system but the Chrome OS. As far as I know it is a special version of Google's Chrome browser. To be honest, I don't know if OpenOffice can be installed on Chrome OS as I'be no experiences with this. OpenOffice is a desktop software developed for Windows, Linux or Mac. But Chrome OS is developed for web-applications, So, both don't fit together.
