Re: [slim] Why is AAC the default
This was reported in bug 15271 as in SBS systems which cannot transcode such as ReadyNAS this behaviour resulted in non playable stream due to another bug 13955 ( https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=13955 ). The change fixing bug 15271 ( https://bugs.slimdevices.com /show_bug.cgi?id=15271 ) is supposed to make SBS only ask for AAC when the player can play AAC natively. Re: [slim] Connecting TV to transporter's digital inputs help?
The Transporter only accepts 2 channel PCM, not the 5.1 Dolby that TVs and DVD players typically output by default. If you send it Dolby, all you'll hear is a faint hiss and crackle. Some TVs (my Samsung, for example) don't have an option to convert to linear PCM, but every DVD player I've ever had does. Set the DVD player to use "PCM", as distinct from "bitstream" or "Dolby/DTS", and also set it to "downmix to stereo". Generally this is not the default. Some even have the digital out disabled by default. I use my Transporter's digital inputs with a DVD player and PVR so it does work. It used to sometimes not, due to a firmware bug; you'd have to cycle into standby to get it going sometimes. This was fixed last year sometime, but my reading of the server release notes (the Transporter firmware version, moronically, is linked to the server version) is that the bug reappeared and has been squashed again. I'd try updating the firmware before assuming there's any kind of hardware fault - it looks like a very well built piece of equipment to me. I bought my Transporter retail here in Australia, so Logitech must have some kind of servicing arrangements. -- peachmelba peachmelba's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73993 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Frank, thanks for a great utility, upgarded this morning from 1.5ish which I hadn't got fully working and successfully emailed the QuickRef to my phone. Few hours later, that prevented me buying a copy of an album I already had, so I'm donating you the cost of that album. Interestingly, in past posts you didn't intend to support AlbumArtistSort, since it is an 'unofficial' tag, but is supported by SBS. This seems to work at the moment for me:- Album = "West Side Stoy" Compilation = "1" AlbumArtist = "Leonard Bernstein" AlbumArtistSort = " OST" sorts as OST in the midst of all my other soundtracks where AlbumArtist = "Various - OST" and AlbumArtistSort - " OST". I suspect that this is because SBS has translated AlbumArtistSort into an internal field that you are using. Anyway, happy it works. Different IP stacks handle this differently and there is no standard. (Some sent it our the first one, some load-balance it, some refuse to let you assign a second interface in the same subnet...etc). It's generally considered an invalid configuration. This is likely why your initial attempt didn't work out. Your best bet is put everything on one flat network (e.g. plug everything into 192.168.168 and stop using the 2nd interfaces on the PCs all together). Then use your DSL router as your default gateway. There is really no need to be using two NICs (if you're doing it for bandwidth reasons). Even the highest quality audio streams are minuscule compared to a gigabit of bandwidth. For example a 256kbps stream would only use about .03% of a gigabit of bandwidth (that's .03% not 3%!). -C -- cburke cburke's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35876 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73702 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox
I am generally anti-DRM. That said, I'm also a 9 year audible subscriber and an avid audio book listener (both from Audible and my local library) and I think there are two sides to the story. First I want to point out that audio books are not quite the same as music. This is because the primary format of a book is, well, a book. The audio version is a secondary format and one which brings in additional revenue to be sure, but isn't the main focus of the publisher. Audio versions of books are optional, audio versions of music are required :-) After years of hating DRM, it was my library which finally made me see the other side of the argument (not that I prefer DRM'd content even now). They have an online system via "MediaMall" which allows you to "check-out" audio books from their library (for free with your library card number). They are typically in DRM'd WMA format and only play for 4 weeks. I initially thought this was crazy and weird - but when I spoke with someone at the library about this they explained that this system allows them to buy a number of "virtual" copies of an audio book and the enforce a virtual "checkout and return" process. Overall, this led to the audio book publishers being able to sell "virtual copies" of their audiobooks without worying about losing revenue (because they act just like the CD sets they sell). By the end of the first year, the audiobook selection was easily 50 times the size it was before this. So this is a case where I am emphatically "pro-DRM" because I know for sure this content would not be available free from my library without it. Since audio versions of books are not compulsory, I don't think the all same (music/movie) DRM arguments apply (at least in the same way). -C -- cburke cburke's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35876 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73651 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox
I have no problem with DRM if I am *knowingly* renting it, as in your library scenerio (a great idea BTW). Just like my Napster account, I have no problem with DRM when I am *knowingly* renting their content via streaming from their server. But if I *buy* it, then I want to own it and have unencumbered access to that purchase on any platform I wish to use it. I'm all for copywright protection when implemented in a sane and common sense way. Like when I buy or rent a DVD, I can play that DVD on any DVD player on the planet (NTSC vs PAL formats aside). But DRM is not universally standardized which limits which MP3 player I can use. If the DVD standard were like DRM: You rent/buy a Warner Bros movie, pop your popcorn and dim the lights, insert your DVD into your Sony DVD player, and you get a message on your TV "sorry, your Sony DVD player can only play movies from Sony Studios". So if there are 12 studios we need to buy 12 different DVD players? That's insane! That's DRM! ;) -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73651 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I appreciate the passion you both have for the Squeezes! I, too, feel exactly the same way...I have never listened to so much beautiful music with such continuous awesome fidelity. I enjoy the variety of music sent to me via last.fm.comIt is interesting to hear what is recommended to me after much scrobbling. If I like the music I can simply save the album/track to Rhapsody. These are the only 2 subscriptions I have. I also use Pandora. So, I really love the Squeezes and I recommend them to all my friends. Most of them don't seem to get my excitement. Re: [slim] SB3 "Your Player Was Not Found"
I'd recommend running the server on the PC along with the files -- you can still access all of the functions (and the same web interface) from the laptop by going to the PC's ip address followed by :9000 (i.e. 192.168.1.100:9000). Actually, just about any web enabled device can access the server this way (iPhone, some cells, netbooks, other PCs in the house, etc.) This cuts down on the networking issues associated with internal dynamic addresses, and perhaps any latency issues. While I'm not sure if that will alleviate any of your current issues, it will certainly make lower the potential for issues. Likewise, you'll only need one PC operative to access your music. Back to your current issue: When I asked if you could access the SServer via the web interface it'd be helpful if you could attempt to access it via another computer in the house. This will show us if the IP address is okay or if any type of firewall has accidentally blocked comms. -- kphinney -I like it, you may not. Supports full range of tags (unlike WAV) 5. Free and not tied to proprietary company Disadvantage for your plan is the iTunes does not rip to FLAC. I wonder if I'm really should post this... Transporter is still a current product you can order it, but not the remote as spare ? What if you broken or misplaced your remote and needs to factory or xilink reset the machine = brick ? Same applies to a recently sold SB Classic ,but you would not lose the same ammount of $$$ . I think this tread is almost done now , it's sufficiently rubbed in now that the "spare part sales does not work". And the OP got 50% answer, he got a link to the spare site . Remains for Logitech to explain why you cant get a remote on that site ? Maybe an email directly to sales, they probably can work something out anyway , despite the efforts by the rest of logitech. There is some very nice people in that organization. Matt Parry helped me once, when the cradles for controller was not available in Europe (they are now took almost a year to get there). FLAC is good but afaik it only reduces filesize to ~60% of original wav size. if you need better, i use 256kbps mp3 which is about 7 to 1 compression ratio. -- MrSinatra www.lion-radio.org using: sb2 & sbc (my home) / sbr (parent's home) - sbs 7.5b - win xp pro sp3 ie8 - p4(ht) 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - 1tb wd usb2 raid1 - d-link dir-655 - 35k mp3 MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74046 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
