file a bug report, this is a clear case, go for it :)

dont hesitate, you would improve things a lot if you do that.
There was a case the other day ? when some one complained about
something that didn,t worked for years. But nobady cared to fill in a
bug report and everyones was crumpy about that.
A bug report get somekind off official handling. A forum post will
drown in all the other stuff.

wifi ap's have tendency to beam in a plane wich makes sense if

So try a couple of different orientation's

Re: [slim] Serverless SqueezeBox?

2008-03-24 Thread Mnyb

As I'm a part-time audiophile nerd i want access to my 380GB of flac
files.
So a mini-itx pc suited me, just fine (look in the DIY section).

It's quiet and energy efficient, can be booted and shutdown from your
remote (or the internet).

The idea of an serverless SB or Small SB base station looks
attractive.

But i have two issues with it.

The needs are very personal, there is no one size fits all solution,
I suppose this is one rationale behind Logitechs design decisions to
let you provide your own infrastructure. You get what you
want/need/already have.
There a lot of alternatives from home servers to professional file
servers 0$ PC found in the dumpster, NAS etc.

Quality and functionality ? If you want to have a device that's matches
the SB/SBR/SBC/transporter and Squeezecenter, well it's not one of the
cheapest NAS'es?
The high end NAS that cuts it are surpassingly similar to a small
computer ;-)

You can sacrifice performance and live with it if YOU decide to do so.

But i can't imagine Logitech offer a box thats does that, (imagine the
flame war). Here's the catch the small cheap plastic thingy many wants,
won't do the job properly. And the market for small home server's are
for company's better suited to offer such products.

Just my 0.02$

They took there time with me a while back.
The solution was not exactly stellar so from me they get:

(2/5) for tech support*
(5/5) for friendly attitude, and willingness to help :-)

*not easy to support such a buggy thing as 6.5.x

Now theres probably a barrage of newcomers flooding the service line,
so who nows.

/flame suit on
/stating the obvious on

The long term solution would be a less buggy product that didn't needed
so much fiddling, to get to work :)

/stating the obvious off
/flame suit off

hope Logitech will work out the logistics of that and leverage their
 global reach...

There is an incredible simple interime fix for this, reopen the online

[slim] remote streaming and SC7.01

2008-03-27 Thread Mnyb

Hi folks I,m not realy sure if this is newbie Q if so move it there..

I'm using this nifty feature of remote streaming, worked around most
problems thanks to help page and wiki.

I'm actually listening rigth now :).
I'm using winamp for it.

But i'm not able to use password with SC7 i'm only getting 400 bad
request
when i'm doing that ?
I'm using this suggested linking http://username:password@my dyndns
name:9000/stream.mp3 ??

Another Question how do setup proxys with softsqueeze ??

today i'm behind the company firewall and winamp has proxy settings.
when travelling i have such trouble as i'm allowed to directly access
internet from hotells then i use softsqueeze.

Thanks in advance

my user and password are fairly simple, the web interface is working
with it, but i cant get winamp to use it ? no #¤*~@ characters.
my pass is 10 characters long and my name is 6 ?

I read somewhere that winamp could promt you for passw ? how do I
accomplish that.

Maybe i'm fiddled enough for today, do I need to restart the server or
are password changes made if i press apply in settings?

I'm actaully running some sort of tech support desk at work today, omg
:)(hence the need for music between cals) I'm normaly a feild
service/comission guy.

/Mikael

Btw company firewall would'nt allow puTTY to SSH or https at port 81
so i'm probably better of trying this when i'm traveling, when i'm
directly at the internet. Restarts of server or squeezecenter service
would'nt be possible from the office ?

A made two simple experiments

Changed to a simplier password no luck.

typed the http://user:pass@my dyndns:9000/stream.mp3 in another
browser window.
Then quicktime atempted to play the stream, mozilla apeared as
player in SC7
but i got no sound from Quicktime.

So SC7 accept the passw this way.
Any suggestions of another player?
I got foobar2000 in my winXP partion at home but it's a lot of things
to setup before it starts to be usefull

Replay gain has a bug that could end up in digital clipping.

A simple test would be to try to send an dts or dolby digital stream,
if the bits are altered by the server or SB3 the outcome would be white
noise.

Get a ripp of the same music made by somebody else to rule out your
ripping setupp.

I would also avoid ripping on a laptop off any kind, i've never seen a
good slimline drive (there may be such a thing but i never seen one).
To me many EAC is so slow treads seems to indicate use of laptop's
for ripping.

I'll watch this with interest as i'm afflicted by this audiophilia bug.

Another angle could be that the SB is on it's last leg ? ready to
breakdown any minute now.

Re: [slim] Waking computer

2008-04-05 Thread Mnyb

the SB3's do WOL wake on lan per default when you press the power
button.

Search wake on or wol on this forum.

The hard part can be to configure your pc/mac/'nix box to use it, and
figure if your network card etc supports it.
Sadly I've never heard of an wifi card thats support wol ? maybe from
sleep or something, I've never seen one that initiate's the pc to boot
itself.
So you got a greater chance off success if you skip that double hop to
the computer, which is bad idea anyway as your doubling the load on
your wireless network. Can you really play flac files on bot SB's at
the same time without problem's ? Then your are lucky and have a very
good wifi network.

I'm very pleased with the wol functionality, I've just figured how to
use it to wake my SC server from the internet and stream music to my
laptop when traveling, at hotels and when i'm visiting friends, so it's
a very cool feature.

[slim] Rerunn of old scanner bug or not (2475 )

2008-04-06 Thread Mnyb

Hi i recently noticed that scanner won't scan folders with foreign
characters in the folder name ? at least not the nordic/swedish
character ö.
As all my Björk and Röyksopp music was gone.
And it will not scan files with ö in the tags.

Proved by this workaround, if i go to each folder via music folders
and start each album then the artist and album shows up (with slightly
broken images at some places).

But for the songs with ö i had to play each and every song, then they
show up in albums etc.

That for for scan for new or changed music or what.

Now I'm in the process of a complete clear and rescan I supect that
this work around won't survive that I'll post when it's done.

Please inform me if theres an never bug on this, then I can vote there.

edit server info etc:

Yes, and after that they appeared under artists and album ?

so that my count of albums went from 1107 to 1115

I could hear that that server was scanning while i browsed those files
in Musicfolder.

Ripping etc it's done on other machines, but the Björks was ripped on
my win XP partition except for one that was ripped on a friends OSX.
I transfered those files to my servers via SMB from my Ubuntu desktop,
if it's matter's the files where on a NTSF disc in my machine :-)

And now the clear and rescan is ready... not good it didn't pick up

How did you do this? I could never get it to work over the internet!

It was a router thing, most consumer routers don't support this no
matter what you do.

The old way off doing this was to portforward port 7 or 9 to the
routers broadcast address example 192.168.1.255 this is not supported
by for example Netgear WGT624v3

So i changed to a linksys WRT54GL and loaded it with with a third party
firmware, in my cause Tomato but there are many more aviable.
The WRT54GL is practically an open source router ? does anyone use the
factory firmware ?
Anyhow it is configurable so that you can log on to router remotely and
then start up selected device or key in a MAC and like magic it boot's
:)

This ads and extra layer of security, you don't have open the .255
address to the world, and of course you have set a password to your
router :)
In the Tomato firmware you choose remote admin to use https for added
security.

Another precaution would be to make sure that your ordinarie desktop is
not wol capable, only the server machine that has Squeezecenter

WRT54GL is good (with for example Tomato firmware).

When I got my WRT54GL I cranked upp the wifi power and got consistent
90-93% strength insted off 68-73% as i had with my netgear.

This will not always be the trick as communication is two way, but as
most com is TO the box (the audio stream etc), this can help a lot.

[slim] Password protection in SC7 and Controller

2008-04-13 Thread Mnyb

I'm aware of the fact that password in SC7 and Controller won't work.
So when will this be fixed and what priority has it.
I'm expecting my duet in about a week or two.

Yes i know that that the password protection in SC7 is not much of
security, but its better than nothing.
My real security is that my music server is only that (no sensitive
private data lying around), and I have backups .

Interesting facts:
Softsqueeze, winamp foobar honors the password.
Squeezeslave just cut trough ? is it so good at emulating a hardware
player that SC7 won't know the difference ? this is a potential
security hole.

[slim] How DO you uppgrade sw in the Controller ?

2008-04-25 Thread Mnyb

Realy, theres a lot of treads about it, but i haven't seen an actual
description on exactly how to do it.

And i mean exactly, as i'm new to it (got it yesterday).

There seem's to be at least three way's (probably more).

Controller somehow updates itself from the latest Squeezecenter you
installed ? or is this wrong, i cannot see the actual file anywhere ?

Controller updates from SqueezeNetwork ?

Is it supposed to autoupdate even if you don't install an newer build
of SC ?

The SD card method, mentioned in passing phrases but how ?

I want to know because my controler is at r2287 while the latest build
suggests another version r2353 or r2354.

I'm also eager to get WOL working and I'm unsure if r2287 has it ?

i think, i read that you should rename the file to jive.bin ? or will it
work anyway.

I'm perfectly happy running 7.0.1 otherwise, as it sort's out many
other things.

It's says on the site that 7.0 is the safe and stable, but my
experience is that most of the time the beta is better.

thanks

Re: [slim] Does SB3 send out ir while left in standby?

2008-04-26 Thread Mnyb

Disconnect the toslink, maybe your amp is autosensing inputs or
similar ?
Teh SB is never off realy so it migth still send something trough the
spdif/toslink.
This is normally considered a good thing, other wise you will have
clicks and pops and other artefacts when amp is losing lock on the
digital in.
Can you manually change input to something else ?
In the old days some recievers did not have separate spdif and toslink
inputs there where only two contacts to the same input ?
I would try via another toslink input if i had one ?

Just some randoms thougths i may be wrong :)

Well isn't the clock on the server ? no server no clock no alarm ?

Wake up by SqueezeNetwork then ? but who knows when SN or the Internet

Well maybe the new Controller could be used for this as it is more

Re: [slim] Poor streaming performance

2008-04-26 Thread Mnyb

Buffersize ?

it is larger in the laptop.
And theres differences in the SqueezeBoxes the Slimp3 and Squeezebox v1
has smaller buffers.

You can set the buffer time for radio on Both SqueezeNetwork and your
Local SqueezeCenter.
SN players then settings for the player then network
SC settings advanced tab then network

I have 3 or 4 seconds of course raising this means that you have to
wait a little longer for playback to start.
You can have up to 30 seconds this may help a lot.

Does it behaves like this on all 128kbps channels ?
can you play your ripped music lossles around 700- 1500kbps then its
not the wireless that is the problem

if some 128kps channels works fine and others don't I suspect the
internet connection itself and related problems.

And sometimes some stations have have problems needing larger buffers
than an SB provides. I can play some 320Kbps channels and some lower
rate stations justs die on me.
Thats the nature of internet radio, it is sometimes outside of yours or
Squeezenetworks control.

Just my 0.02$

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter slow; drops out; Time to return my duet?

2008-04-27 Thread Mnyb

Try the latest 7.01 instead of 7.0

It's a little contradictory that Logitech claims that 7.0 is the safe
and stable and supported option.

The 7.0.1 wil in most cases be better, and i think they are very close
to a final release of 7.01 .

If this wont work send it back and try again when things looks more
stable :-)

I've only had my duet this weekend and it works really good :-)

On the other hand i've been on 7.01 for far longer with my SB3 without
problems.

Maybe your main problem is getting 7.0 to work, if you send the duet
back try the latest 7.1 or 7.01 from time to time to see if a stable
and working version apears (by that i mean a version that works for
you).
I've remember 7.01 to be a little messy on my XP i had to straighten
out some firewall issues before it was OK (getting rid of Norton and
install ESET).

Maybe you should investigate why 7.0 wont work on your XP, have you
been in contact with the support ?

As an relatively early adopter i bought mine from ripcaster, which was

I'm a little suspicious as the Receiver or Controller's are not aviable

Any tip of where to get it at good price would help others

Re: [slim] Wake On LAN before alarm occurs

2008-04-27 Thread Mnyb

My via mother board offers some crude scheduling in bios, so that i can
booth my server for example every morning ?
(I think its even possible to schedule shutdown )

Would it matter of the server is on half an hour before wakeup time ?
You could set the server to wake at the same time every day, and then
use the alarm function's i SC to a more fine schedule.

i would use 1/2 hour instead of one minute because my Linux server
might want to run a disc check on my 1TB drive its scheduled ever 50
boot and my system drive is scheduled for check every 25 boot (it's
much smaller would be muck quicker).

I second your wish for a more intelligent SC/SN behavior, this could be
improved in many other aspects.

Re: [slim] Impossible to wake up SB3 if last connected to no longer running SlimServer

2008-04-28 Thread Mnyb

If you kill the server while all players are connected to it, you get
this :-)

I think there are ways out of this if Logitech would want it to.

from the root ? meny, null meny ? what would you call it ?
You can go two ways players or settings.
If your unlucky there are no players.
If you go settings/choose music source/ your SC server it should WOL
the server, but it does not.

i tried to reopen the WOL bug to discuss this
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5378

If you go settings/choose music source/SqueezeNetwork. SN should be
able to reestablish contact with your players, they are after all
registered an known by SN, who is a server and should be capable of
this.

There is a third option, but that would break the concept a little.
You do as I suppose above AND nudge the players to SC or SN from the
Controller itself ! it is a small computer and is probably able to
speak some slimproto commands ?

After all all the stuff is at your network with known addresses and/or
known MAC.

I think the Duet is lovely, but you have to remember to switch the
players over to SN before stopping your server.
You also have to manually start your server from here.

Well it's the choosen functionality this is never a problem if you
server is on 24/7

I would like improvement here, but i understand if theres more
important areas that needs attention first, but eventually i think
Logitech has to fix this I have no problems with it, a small annoyance.
But some people migth find this a deal breaker.

Well it was a suggestion, the Controller does not have this

My idea with that was that this could workaround the router trouble you
described or other problems I don't even know of, as 1 i don't know that
much of SB,SC,SN ecosystem 2 I'm no programmer.
Maybe the single IP problem could be worked around be letting the
players act at different predefined ports ws the SN.
To use the controller this way might help out in other ways, Maybe the
player firmware could be changed to fix all this issues, but will the
oldest players have resources for every change you come up with ?

[slim] Hide SSID ?

2008-04-28 Thread Mnyb

Hello during the setup off my Duet combo, I had to broadcast my SSID to
make the setup procedure work (well it didn't really ).

But if I hide the SSID now then the communication crashes ? at least
for the controller, the SB3 and SBR is unaffected.
all things are on fixed ip's this should not matter for any connected
component.

I'm using an Linksys WRT54GL with tomato software 1.17 WPA2 AES and
MAC filtering is used on the wireless.
I'm I alone with this setup anyone else with tomato ?

I have 1 controller 1 Reciever 1 SB3 1 server 1 destop.
The desktop and the server is wired to the router.

Is this an known issue ? or should I...you know... file
another bug... (they wont like me anymore :-/ )

Re: [slim] Hide SSID ?

2008-04-29 Thread Mnyb

Well I can see that MAC filtering can be cracked.

Does it not do any good as my filtered devices SB SBR and SBC are on
the net all the time.
and the only Mac's the router lets through is these 3 adresses.
So any hack has to compete with these for bandwith.
The Mac filterings works without any problems, I don't see why it would
be bad, my setups rarely changes.
So i don't see it as a hustle to alter the router settings once or
twice a year.
My network is so static that it is in fact completely static, no DCHP

I do use WPA2 AES but i'm not so paranoid that i have an completely
randomized code... yet.
it's 15 characters long. And i skipped the most obvious traps and did
not use a pass based on family names, pets etc or common language.

So what would happen's if someone did crac my security you have to
spoof 1 mac adress crac my WPA2 code spoof an IP nr, would not
something crash if 2 devices had the same MAC and IP or same MAC and 2
different IP's. What would the router do ?

I could change my code to something random but then i have to setup the
receiver again, ouch !

btw why would an hidden SSID invite haxx0rs ? how fun can a 4port
router at a private home be ?
I just don't want to invite the local kids to do something.

A real hacker would probably crac it instantly. but who would want to
get me ?

Re: [slim] What speakers?

2008-04-29 Thread Mnyb

I have couple of small powered Fostex PM04 these can be paired with a
sub.
They sound surprisingly good for such a small system almost like real
speakers ( i've got bitten by the audiophile bug, many years ago ).

I use these in my kitchen I don't feel that i actually need the sub, my
0.02$ is that a sub only complicate things in a budget system 2
reasonable good speakers usually gets you more bang for the buck.

Or you can buy one of those horrible plastic 5.1 computer speaker
systems for the same $ with matching craptastic sound

Btw i think speaker questions are better asked in the audiophile
sections.
You will get more answers i can guarantee that ;-)

good luck , a good place for powered speakers is your local hobby music
store they usually have some speakers to cater all these hobby
musicians that DIY there own recordings, they don't like to pay $$$ so
theres often a wide selection of small monitor speakers for a good
price.

Re: [slim] Hide SSID ?

2008-04-29 Thread Mnyb

Interesting responses, some of you must be in to encryption and such ?
this has gone very off topic but interesting.

On the same tangent, the SBC has a limited charset, so all phassprases
are not possible to type with the controller, the same applies to the
SB

I see that tomato has got to 1.19 ill have a look at that.

Quote:
If you look at the serious research, you find that even folks using
what
they think are good passphrases use the same, weak ones. There are
about
30,000 words in a typical college educated English speaker's
vocabulary.
That is a trivial number to push through a dictionary attack. Even if
you change from Englist to LeetSpeak, its still a fairly small number
in
crypto terms.

How do you check your passphrase if it's good ?
To be more specific mine is 15 letters and one number. the words used
comes from rather obscure literature.

I found this test online

http://rumkin.com/tools/password/passchk.php

there my pass is judged as resonable with Entropy: 48.9 bits

and it flunks completely, according to http://www.passwordmeter.com/

But my real security is that my desktop computer is off when i'm not at
home and not able to wol
My server contains only music (with its own firewall and passw).
Thats the equivalent off putting a class off water or a wiff of fresh
air in a safe.
All music in the world is aviable on any torrent tracker.

the router also has passw and i use the https:/ variant off admin
page.

The only concern is if some hack use's my server as a spambot or
similar.

Thank you for the replys, I don't think i have the energy to write that
bug report now.
My concern was realy that i had to alter perfectly functional router
settings to connect the duet.

Good Morning (it's 6:22 in sweden)

deliver's their stuff.
Good guys.

I would not say that anything has gotten substantially better as i use
the digital out.

But the old European supply was a nasty plastic thing that emitted a
burning smell ?
Did I say plastic as in probably unshielded and the wallwart was laying
close to my cabling.

So i bought it to limit possible interference sources in my systems at
least 3 other components has switchmode supplies, buts thats inside
metalcases with grounding.
I don't think switchers are bad in general.
It was just that the old SB3 wallwart was not oozzing quality :-)
I just thougth it would do some indirect harm to system not change the
audio quality of my SB3's digital out, that would be almost
impossible.

whatever you do never ever buy the Wellborne Labs supply. that
company has gone bad.
You can give him money but he will never deliver and you will not be
able to contact them again

The only odd issue i have is that if you go settings advanced

I ignore that.

So i uppdate via SD when theres a new jive version inside the nigthly

Make this very clear at your shopping site and elsewhere, otherwise
folks are going to buy the SBR only and have problems.

It's not only the setup procedure, try switching to SqueezeNetwork with
out an controller ;-)

It's not supposed to work, no controller no SqueezeNetwork.

Re: [slim] Best Way to Globally customise menus

2008-05-10 Thread Mnyb

Why not a user configurable template for players not yet connected
especially internet players as softsqueeze or winamp itunes whatever,
when your connecting from the outside world (not your home net ). Not
only for the menus, there other player settings i like to have on my
remote conection.

The server seem to remember some settings for my remote streaming's but
it is not user configurable.

And again that old one about file format preferences for every player.

Re: [slim] remote streaming

2008-05-15 Thread Mnyb

If you do have a router, don't forget to port forward the same ports as
usual , the ones you had to open in your firewall to get SC to work at
home.

If you don't have an fixed IP you can use some kind of Dynamic DNS
service, either from the router or PC (whatever fits you setup).
You migth have to restart Softsqueeze while your server is shifting
IP.

And password protection IS working with the duet now.

A nice extra is Wake On Lan over internet, so that you can boot the
music server from the internet. but this is highly dependent on the
hardware involved, computer, router etc. It is not possible for
everyone to do this.

I,m listening in rigth now from a hotell room somewhere :) i'm
travelling a lot often away 1 to 3 weeks in a row.
I realy like this feature

Re: [slim] FYI be aware of Mac adress when using Wol

2008-05-16 Thread Mnyb

It's a mystery to me but it's supposed to be like this, the bug is
closed.

Why it is a mystery to me :

the server and SB can communicate duh, i hear the music and see
changes in menu's and screens ;-)

But the SqueezeCenter or Slimserver is incapable off setting this in an
SB3 ?
The server is capable of altering most settings on the SB but not the
server MAC parameter ??

Suggestion: let the server tell the SB it's MAC, then the network
intricacies are irelevant, and it will work as long as WOL works in the
network.

Me too with one exception, the setup procedure didn't work at all. had
to resort to NET-UDAP to point the SBR to my server.
But the Controller has worked flawlessly for me.

There are some wol bugs and other handling Quirks (SC to SN switching)
but thats minimal problems.

I have my WRT54GL router set to 251mW (default 41) of power on the
wireless (the maximum settings he he ) and I live in an 69 Square
meters 2 room flat.
And i'm alone on channel 6 in my building. both my players show around
90% (was 75 with 41mW )signal strength. I can use the Controller from
my bathroom
trough 1 concrete and 1 sheetrock wall to my router.

Not being able to download fw and sluggish Controller behavior IS
usually some kind off wireless problem. They are working on some
compatibility issues.

Off course dont use the 7.0 software I never used it. the last months
i've been on some kind of 7.01 .

If you tried the product with 7.0 and returned it, that was a little
premature decision me thinks.
To criticize Logitech just a little with hindsight the product was
released prematurely but everybody does that*. With 7.01 its ready for
consumers

I would be astonished if the controller actually had less usable range
than the player, THAT would be a piece of cr*p or really really stupid
design parameters.

WRT54GL with Tomato fw.
Cranked up the radio, and the little thing has really good antennas.
And it can handle WOL over internet and QOS and even more stuff.

I can NOT recommend the NetGear WGT624v3 it's.
Mainly because it's a little buggy and is much weaker in the radio then
the linksys.
And it has no WOL over internet.
It is no problem using it (after some fiddling) ,but as the Linksys
WRT54GL exist, there is no point with anything else in that price
range.

I deem the Year option pretty hard to use as Year tags is always wrong

Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

Where is your normal listening volume ? Your hopefully aware of that the
digital volume is reducing bits so the noisefloor is creeping closer.
What amp or dac is the SB connected to you could just try the volume on
that instead, and use the full volume of the SB to see if the problem
goes away.

I don't have the spec for the SB digital volume in my head. In
conjuction with the built in dac i think it operates from 24bits so
this will only be a problem with low volumes.
I don't know how the bit reducing thing works from the digital out I
asume it starts with 16bits and lowers from there, I'm not aware off
any uppsampling in the SB

Do you have a very loud system ? with lots off gain and efficient
speakers.

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

Aaaa only for MP4 files then I'm totaly lost here ? (sorry i did'nt
notice)

but i'm strongly suggest that you fix the volume for the SB connected
to the AVR4306 this setting is per player so it won't affect the other
zones.
Drawback is that you have to use the Denons volume for the main rig.

SPDIF (the digital or coax) have no metadata so it's just a raw 16/44
or whatever bit stream so the only way to accomplish volume is to
reduce bits.
So the SB can not tell the Denon what volume to play, you have to
alter the data.

Sorry I have no MP4 or m4a files ? there must be something awol with
the decoding/encoding I use only flac.

btw.
The big Dynaudio is nice :-) I use a MeridianG68J and a SiriuS DMX200
to a pair of Contour 4.0 as front pair, an old model but very good.

mp4 is not native to the SB3 so it's trancoded on the server.

this will be a lossy encoding to lossles trancode.

mp4 to mp3 tracoding is lossy to lossy and this IS known to introduce

check your file types settings.

Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

I would not say that digital out is bad I use that as the dacs in my
meridian is superior to the SB3, but i don't use the volume control.
So the digital out is the preferred output to HT equipment as most HT
amps digitize it's analog inputs anyway, any kind of processing
including subwofer filter is done digital, so I think digital is
better.
I use my Meridian preamp for volume. and has the SB volume for that
player on fixed.

You could go analog if your Denon has analog bypass, but as you said
you have the noise on other players around the house, so i'm guessing
this won't solve our problem

And as you said theres something with your mp4 decoding if its fine
with mp3 or flac or WAV, theres nothing wrong with your amp conection
with digital if it works with all other files but mp4.

I know tw**t about mp4 so whats the bitrate how are these ripped ?
You might want to send a file to a forum member that does use mp4.
I have a clarkconnect linus server, so i doubt that i can play these
without severe fidling with it, the AAC options in Advanced filetypes
is greyd out on my server so i can not listen to any of your files.

Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

Well it depend's i dont know much about the denon.
So you have to try, beware that with some level mismatch you might be
trowing away more SN ratio or bit's by going Digital analog digital
and analog to the speakers.

As i said the analog volume on the SB is also digital but probably at a
higher bit rate 24bit (soon some senior forum member IS coming to
browbeat me about this :) ).

What is best in practice you have to experiment with.
But don't automatically sneeze at bit reducing, it can be better than
the alternative.
And at 24 bit it is better than analog volume, it's whats my preamp is
doing anyway (it's upsampling everything to 24/96 prior to processing
)

But my experience is that most Analog to digital converters in HT amp's
is rather lowfi you use it for ye olde VHS and tape deck and similar
uncritical applications.

And my kitchen setup with an SBR is done so that volume off my active
speakers is such that when the SBR volume is maxed out it is roughly as
loud as i ever want to play. So adjust the volume on the amps conected
to the SB to use as much of it's range as possible that's best practice
afiak.

Re: [slim] All v7+ SC now free of OS X 7.01 scanning bug?

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

A thought why is the 7.0.1 still recommended download for MAC

http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html

If you try to download the Mac version you get the 7.0.1 dmg ;-)

This is not nice as it will not work on most Mac's ?
If you are a little smart you automagicaly supply Mac newbies with
7.0.2 and be done with it.

Just a friendly suggestion.

Re: [slim] At last: A Hifi ethernet cable by Denon

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

And its still digital ! hopefully Denon's proprietary protocol has some
basic error correction etc and it's still only 192kHz a patch cable
unable to handle such a low freq will utterly fail as an network cable
:-)

funny product, it's apparently risk free to empty the pockets of
audiophiles.

Re: [slim] Can't find Player with 2nd Computer

2008-06-15 Thread Mnyb

What kind off squeezebox ? in the old ones you can go into setup via the
ir remote and point it the new server. hold the left arrow for 5s or
so.
The SB has the server ip stored somewhere, so it's setting in the
player which server to choose.

Re: [slim] Enabling Wake On Lan

2008-06-26 Thread Mnyb

You now, you can edit an SB3's Server Mac with the ir-remote, but your
network is beyond my experience i don't know if it will help you.

I had a situation when i changed server, the SB3 remembered my old
servers mac.

Press left arrow for 5 seconds and you enter the setup meny use down
arrow, go to current settings (2 of 4 )then rigth arrow scroll around
to SqueezeCenter Mac (9 of 19).

If you press rigth arrow from here you can edit it !

NB don't edit the SB3's own mac (14 of 19 ) in current settings ;-)

Re: [slim] lot's of backgroud noise like tape hiss

2008-06-26 Thread Mnyb

Ooops somebody citing me :)in the same tread, I was told that the
digital volume for the DIGITAL output (spdif) also works with 24bits
just as at DAC's for the analog out ?
If so i wont worry a bit ? 24bit is beyond any hardware and human
beings ability's. and is probably better than most analog volume
controls.

but does the SB3 realy has the processing power to sample rate convert
16bit to 24bit ? surprise me again please :)
the digital filter before the dac's might do that in hardware ?

But I'm using fixed volume and no gain whatsoever, i've tried to run
dts encoded stuff as flac and wav and it's works flawlessly. This
indicates that the bits are untouched the bitstream is as encoded
nothing altered changed or added, which in my book is very very good.
It just passes trough the SB3 (mind that no squeezebox can decode dts
or dolby) if the SB tries to do something with a format it don't
understand it would result in white noise ? *

Anyhow i use fixed to the hifi rig and variable for other stuff I don't
think this can be heard in *couch* normal equipment.

/Mikael

*PS i tried dts stuff as a scheme to verify if my whole system is
bitperfect.
*PPS i have an digital preamp so want to reduce the number of unknowns
and do my processing at one place.

Re: [slim] Improvements in Duet?

2008-06-26 Thread Mnyb

Is this realy the same product ? we are talking about ?
regarding lemons unfortunately there seems to be a batch of faulty
controllers on the loose ? (as this excellent forum informs me).

I must admit that i have an very favorable setup, server is clarkconect
linux box , my router is the linksys WRT54GL with tomato firmware (max
output on wifi ). i did my netstumbling and removed myself from the
other 7-8 wifi's in the neighborhood i'm alone on ch6 the rest is on 1
or 11.

My apartment is small 68 square meters (732 ft2 or 82 yd2) my living
room is 6.7 meters long (22 feet ). Pardon my eventual misses with
archaic measurements.

I'll post pic of my flat (one floor no stairs).
Texts are in swedish living room =vardagsrum kitchen=kök badrum
bathroom.
Server is in sovrum=bedroom.
Now the fact is the controller works from every corner including the
balcony and bathtub ?
Now we have one benchmark ? it just works for me ?

Re: [slim] Recommended System

2008-06-26 Thread Mnyb

And it's not possible to select SqueezeNetwork for a Reciever with the
web interface (as it is with an SB3 ) you need a controller to do
that*.
Although listening to webradio trough the SqueezeCenter works just
fine.

/Mikael

*if not changed in a recent beta ?
