[Elecraft] Elecraft 20M SSB Net Results - March 3rd, 2024

2024-03-03 Thread Brian Maynard
We had a brief net today at 1800Z on 14.303.5 MHz. Conditions were noisy and
much QRM from the ARRL SSB Contest. We still managed 11 check-ins with help
from relay stations. We ended early as a station was running nearby and were
are causing him QRM.

[Elecraft] Elecraft 20M SSB Net Results

2024-02-25 Thread Brian Maynard
The 20M Side Band net met today at 1800Z. Conditions were poor with a high
noise level and QRM from the NC QSO Party (thanks to KA4HIM for graciously
moving when the net started). Eric, WB9JNZ, was busy with family so Brian,
K1NW stood in as net control with the helpful relaying of John (N6JW), Stan
(K6VWE), and Jim (NC0JW). We had 30 check-ins from 19 US states and 1
Canadian province. Please join us next Sunday at 1800Z on 14.303.5 Mhz.

Re: [Elecraft] P3

2023-12-17 Thread Brian Hunt
Hi Jim,
I’ve discovered that it’s easier to see a very weak signal on the waterfall
than in the amplitude plot. Setting the SVGA screen for 25% spectrum and 75%
waterfall gives lots of space to see dim traces. You may have to adjust the
threshold a bit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Erratic receive

2023-11-29 Thread Brian Hunt
According to the schematics, those two double pots on the front panel are
merely voltage dividers. They provide 0 to 5v signals to the front panel MCU
which controls the function, eg: AF_GAIN. It’s possible the pot has developed a
dropout right at the point where you usually set the AF level. Maybe turning
the pot stop to stop a half dozen times will improve it?? Worth a try.

There was a time when one could email Elecraft support with the K3 serial

solution but it would be a start.

Re: [Elecraft] Manual For KX2 S/N 01888?

I bought my KX2 #11xx in November 2016, to give you a data point on age. In
addition to Mike’s info, I’d suggest downloading the firmware release notes
from the website. Lots of upgrade info not included in the printed manual.

Hope you enjoy your KX2; it’s a gem.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2023-07-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Kevin,
You were good on 20 meters with some deep QSB but OK copy. Then we got whacked
by the sun pretty hard between nets and the story changed on 40 meters. I could
hear you at first but your signal was below the noise peaks so your CW was
getting chopped up and nearly uncopyable.

Hoping for better next week!

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

2023-05-20 Thread Brian Hunt
I had a similar problem and traced it to voltage sag under load at the K3. The
power supply was good under load but there was too much loss in the stock cable
which was wired directly to the PS. I replaced it with a heavier, shorter
cable. I found that I had to run the TX gain calibration twice in a row to get
it right. It’s been fine since.

Re: [Elecraft] Keying the K3s

2023-01-24 Thread Brian Hunt
I’d like clarification on this also. I don’t run an amp but I’ve run my K3 for
years at 5 watts for QRP events without issue. My TUN PWR is set to 7 watts to
keep my remote tuner and LPA happy.

The manual states that to manually initiate a TX GAIN calibration to set TUN
PWR to exactly 5 (or 50) watts and hold the TUNE button. I can imagine that
accidentally doing so into an antenna rather than a 50 Ohm dummy load could
really mess up the TX GAIN calibration.

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Nets

2023-01-01 Thread Brian Maynard
Richard,

The Sunday Elecraft Nets all use relays, so if you cannot hear the NC you can
get picked up by a relay. The 20M net on 14.3035 at 1800Z this week will be
K1NW in Rhode Island. The 40M net on 7.280 at 1900Z is usually WM6P, Steve, in
northern Georgia. The 80M net is run by Dave, N8SBE, in Michigan at 9 pm EST
(note not UTC) on 3.775.

I hope you can join us today!

Erik WB9JNZ was off flying his R/C planes but we carried on. Band conditions
were good with John in CA hearing Peter in New Zealand on his doublet. Several

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Noise Reduction

2022-11-06 Thread Brian Hunt
There was a very good description of the K3 NR written by Lyle, the DSP
designer for Elecraft. It may be on their website.

Basically, as I understand it, the NR is designed to work against random noise.
Noise that has a correlated component, like line noise, it doesn’t address as
well.

I’ve found that, properly adjusted, it works very well on CW but using it on
SSB created unacceptable “mush” on the audio.

Hopefully the spectral subtraction NR when available on the K4 will be much
better.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-01 Thread Brian Hunt
Like you I’m 99% CW OP but for years I’ve used inexpensive (~$20) computer
headsets with my K3. Light weight and don’t clamp your head. Comfortable to
wear for hours. They’re a bit hard to find these days because most are
Bluetooth. The K3 TXEQ can make it sound good.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 / N1MM Keying and rig control

2022-10-14 Thread Brian Hunt
I have been using a USB-to-serial converter cable for connection between the K3
and computer running N1MM+. I use DTR keying on the K3 with VOX and QSK on.
This leaves the K3 internal keyer and paddle free to use at a different speed
for fills, etc.

I have noticed the CW timing from the computer to falter a bit once in a while
depending on what else the computer is doing at the time. I try to minimize the
number of apps running. Typical CW speed is 22-32 wpm so I don’t know how it
would do faster than that.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question on S-Meter Calibration

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
I thought I understood this but appears that I had it wrong.

According to the SMTR calibration procedure, it is set with the PRE on and
ATTN off. Calibration sets a 50uV signal to S9 and a 1uV to S2-S3. See this in
the Calibration Procedures section of the manual (p51 in my 2009 version).

I’ve been using the SMTR ABS mode ever since I discovered it. YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-10 Thread Brian Hunt
Sounds like a thermal problem, possibly with the 8v regulator. I have a problem
with my K3 (S# 4K range). If the rig is cold ~60 F the 8v apparently goes out
of regulation evidenced by the display illumination dimming on key down. The
rig works normally otherwise. The problem goes away once the FP Temp warms a
little - I wrote the number down somewhere but can’t find it now.

Good luck & 73,

Check the “Shipping Status” link on the Elecraft home page. It shows the
shipping status on virtually all their products. It’s updated when there are
changes. KPA-1500 is shown as in stock, no doubt updated in the last few days.

Re: [Elecraft] AX-1 -- with and without counterpoise

2022-09-26 Thread Brian Hunt

Ha!  I did the same thing last night only with slightly parameters:

0.2 inch diameter 4 ft. rod (average diameter of AX1?) with the base 5
ft above average ground.  Counterpoise (#18 wire) drops 4 ft from the
feed point then trails out 9 ft to about 2 inches above ground. The base
loading coil was 11.3 uH with a 6.7 ohm series resistor for a Q of 150.

Not surprisingly, the gain plot showed best gain in the direction of the
counterpoise: -0.37 dBi at 30 degrees elevation.  Gain in the opposite
direction was -4 dBi.  So if you are in a QSO with someone, you should
be walking away from them. :-)   SWR at 14.050 MHz resonance was
calculated at 3:1.

Interesting exercise!

I modeled something similar to an AX1 with EZNEC last night.  I used a
base loaded 4' length of 1/2 inch diameter tubing for the whip, a
roughly 10 uH coil with a Q of 200 (25 turns, 1.5" diameter, 3"
length), and a 13 foot #14 counterpoise wire.  It was oriented
vertically with the bottom end of the counterpoise wire being 2 feet
above "typical" ground.  The frequency was about 14.1 MHz.

It looked surprisingly decent for both SWR and field pattern ... only
about -2 dBi ...  although of course we should be suspect of the
accuracy for a model that severe.

The calculated field strength without the counterpoise wire was about
-10 dBi, but that's clearly unrealistic because the SWR was 700 (no
exaggeration).   In practice I'm sure that other things (human body,
coax shield if used, proximity of the rigs case to ground, etc) have a
moderating effect, and they all likely introduce additional loss.  I
don't think there is any way that EZNEC can accurately model something
like that, and we also have the issue of how much loss there might be
in the tuner trying to match such a difficult load.

Thus the urge to do a real world test, although I'm coming to believe
that no matter how hard I try, it probably isn't possible to control
proximity effects well enough for the case without the counterpoise
wire to get a truly definitive comparison.  That SWR of 700 in the
model was because the feedpoint had a capacitive reactance of 35,000
ohms (!!).  It is certainly debatable whether that figure is accurate,
but there can be no doubt that it is very high.   A ballpark
comparison is therefore about the best I expect whenever I find myself
able to do the test.

Thanks for checking me in Kevin. It was my first time on a CW net and I was
nervous, relying on Text Decode on my K4D, etc. Conditions were as weird as
they were on the 20M SSB net at 1800 - one way strong - reverse weak. I could
barely copy you. On 40M I listened around for 10 minutes but the TN QSO party
dominated and I heard nothing from you. I hope to continue checking in! Thanks

I wanted to add one relay in today’s 20M net: K6WDE, Dave, Utah, KX3, #4599
(thanks NS7P, Phil, for the relay)

Also I had a few queries on the net days and times. All the nets meet on
Sunday. The 20M net meets at 1800Z on 14.3035 MHz (Eric WB9JNZ Net Control).
The 40M net meets at 1900Z on 7.280 MHz with Steve, WM6P Net Control. The CW

Re: [Elecraft] switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones

2022-07-23 Thread Brian Hunt
Pretty simple home brew project, I would think. Four stereo jacks, a DPDT
switch, a small box and a capacitor should do it. The capacitor is to block the
mic bias from going to the Signalink. You would still likely have to adjust
levels whenever switching. Would take some study to get all the connections
right.

Re: [Elecraft] Options for contest logging software under Linux

Kevin,
For option 3 you might take a look at the groups.io linuxhams. A quick search

general and contest logging.

Dual booting the computer you want to use for contesting could be option 4. 

[Elecraft] CreativeK4ShippingStatus io group

2022-05-10 Thread Brian Maynard
Fellow K4/K4D Buyers -

As I wait for my K4 (expected early August), I am working with Bob, K5WA, to
start tracking 2022 K4/K4D orders on the creativek4shippingsta...@groups.io
<https://groups.io/g/CreativeK4ShippingStatus> site. Please join us there to
see Bob's current lists of orders placed through 2021 which will give you
anidea of how quickly orders are being filled. If you placed your order in 2022
either post your order date, order number and what you ordered (K4 or K4D - it
does not appear as KAT4 or other accessories affect wait time), or send the
same to me K1NW at arrl.net. I will be taking over from Bob when the 2021 Group
3 is fulfilled, and will keep the list going through at least the end of the
year - production should be caught up by then, right?

Re: [Elecraft] Interference on 17M

2022-04-18 Thread Brian Hunt
Potentially a solar panel. Any new installations nearby? Does it go away after
sunset?

I have an S9 noise signal on about 14036 with spurs on either side coming from
a new solar installation about 200 yards away. Broad but very stable. Makes
that section of the band tough to use. I think it’s Solar Edge but haven’t
confirmed it. QTH is Northern California.

Re: [Elecraft] Reset KX2 to factory settings.

2022-03-02 Thread Brian Hunt
Hopefully you saved the configuration using the KX2 Utility. If so, just reload
it.

In the manual, there is a table containing the menu descriptions and their
default options. Easy to go through and a good place to learn what they do.

EEINIT is described on page 56 of the manual. Basically the top line says DON’T
DO IT. If you do, you must have a configuration file to reload all the
calibration data and defaults.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] Fwd: Need a logger recommendation

2021-12-22 Thread Brian F. Wruble
-- Forwarded message -
From: Brian F. Wruble

Subject: Need a logger recommendation
To: DX List , DX Reflector

I have been using CommCAT (by Howard, W6HN) for at least 15 years. I have
been a beta tester. It has one feature that really set it apart. Every
time a DX spot appeared that I needed for a new bend, mode, both, grid,
etc., CommCAT could send a text message or an email to my iPhone. W6HN has
stopped supporting the program, and the text alert function is gone.

Can anyone recommend a good logger that includes some kind of alert via
text or email when a spot appears for one I need?

Thanks. Happy New Year to all.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K1 VFO reading

2021-11-26 Thread Brian Hunt
I think what you are seeing is probably typical. I have a K1-4 that tunes down
to 6988 and 13982 on 40 and 20 respectively. My tuning range is a little wider
at 93 kHz.

The Owner’s Manual has a detailed section on VFO alignment. If you didn’t get a
manual with the radio you can probably download one from Elecraft.

Good luck and have fun with this little beauty.

[Elecraft] XV50 Rev B - Questions

2021-11-24 Thread Brian Moore via Elecraft
Hello - I recently purchased an XV50 to use with my K2. While setting it
up for a K2 with no K60XV per the manual, I noticed that there is no
JP9, where I am supposed to short pins 1-2. On closer inspection, my
XV50 has a rev B board and it appears these pins don't exist. The
assembly manual I found online is for a Rev E board and owners manual is
for Rev F1.

I'm assuming all the other jumper settings from the Rev E manual are
correct for my Rev B XV50, but I thought I'd ask here for clarification
before I damage my XV50, since it's almost irreplaceable now days. Also
a Christmas wish would be to purchase a K60XV if anyone has one laying
around that they'd be willing to sell.

Thanks, 73,

Brian - KM6ZX

It’s a self protection feature to keep you from blowing up the audio input. The

Re: [Elecraft] Choke for QRP with unbalanced antennas?

2021-11-20 Thread Brian Hunt
I use a large ferrite clamp-on to isolate my short whip/counterpoise from my
KX2. Needed tor running digital modes. The large variety will hold 3 turns of
RG-58 which seems to be enough for what I need. IIRC I got them from ProAudio

You need to gently slide the large rubber band off the VFO A knob to
access the single allen screw. The band can slide back on the knob
with some slight stretching.

I'm interested in getting my feet wet in WSJT digital modes, but don't

checked the K3 manual, Fred Cady's more detailed K3 book and poked
around the DXLabs and Win4K3 sites, but don't see how to get started.
Can anyone direct me to a good source(s) of information on this?

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with my KXPD2

2021-09-14 Thread Brian Hunt
The KXPD2 comes with two small hex-keys. The larger is fits the screws that
adjust the spacing. The smaller one is for the pivot screws to adjust the
setting of the pivot bearings. It sounds like your pivots are possibly too
tight or have dust in them. I would try loosening the pivot screws slightly to
see if that frees them up. The pivots should be set so the paddles move freely
but with no up/down looseness. Then set the spacing to taste. GL!

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

I believe the trip temp. is 60c. The rate you get there, of course, depends a
lot on power setting, mode and ambient temperature. I’ve found at normal shack
ambient I can cycle FT8 pretty quickly at 7 watts. But I always monitor PA TEMP
and back it down if necessary. At the beach with a 55f breeze - no problem 

[Elecraft] K2 fan etc

2021-08-09 Thread Brian
I keep an eye for discarded PC computers on garbage and recycling days here,
mostly to take out the 12 vdc fans from the power supply.
I have those in abundance now, more than I need. But I run them on 9 vdc with
no trouble (wall warts and such) or from the 12 vdc I might be using for a rig.
I use those fans on top of my Drake tube gear with the open perforated cabinets
and so on. I have boatanchor rigs I also blow air into or out of when running
them in the shack in the winter months (my basement is not conducive to tube
gear operation in the summer!).

As they are free and are pretty darn quiet (especially at 9 vdc) they are
useful to have at hand for any situation where heat might need to be dealt with.

Re: [Elecraft] KBPF3A switching frequencies and performance

2021-04-20 Thread Brian Hunt
This thread also got my curiosity up.  Several years ago I upgraded my
K3 #41xx with the KBPF3 including the 'A' mod of the capacitor on the RF
board.  I never really checked it out except for the 630 meter coverage
and transmit capability - both were as advertised.

Using a wideband noise generator (QRP Guys K7QO Noise Bridge) I tuned
from about 500 kHz up to 30 Mhz and was able to identify the filter
switch-over points (most of them anyway).  I measured the received noise
level using the P3 dBm scale.  At none of the switch points was the
noise level more than about 5 dB different from one side to the other.
By continuously tuning and watching the display, it was apparent that
the differences were mainly due to roll off of one filter segment or the
other.  The gain was uniformly consistent across each of the ham bands
but sometimes rolled off at the KBPF3 switch points.  The area between
7.41 MHz and 8.4 MHz is kind of no-man's land due to the first IF being
there.  At the IF frequency the gain was down >50 dB.

That mic has a built in preamp, even though it is a dynamic mic. You might
consider that and lower your mic gain setting in the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Inventorying a K3/P3

2021-03-29 Thread Brian Hunt
Dave,
There have also been numerous component adds/mods over the years. Three that I
did a couple years ago are 1. Increase the 12vdc accessory power from 500 ma to
1 A. Evidence is a 1A sticker on the rear of the K3. 2. Add a capacitor to the
KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are
installed. 3. Addition of a capacitor to the KBPF3 general coverage BPFs to
extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the
mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the
box. These are a bit inconsequential but add value to the K3.

Have you thought about asking Elecraft for the work orders for the K3’s S/N?

Good luck and thank you for helping out the family. Sorry you lost a friend.

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-14 Thread Brian D
Iworked for years on 405 line TV transmitters. I had a notch of at least
40dB at 10.125khz. I was surprised how quickly it disappeared when 405 line
TV closed down, to be replaced by a rolloff at 16kHz.

I now roll off much lower, and keep moving my default cw sidetone as it
seems to produce a notch after a few contests, I'm currently at 650Hz but
will try 700 again soon.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Starts Off with Low Output on 10M

2021-02-28 Thread Brian Hunt
Nate,
A couple more questions:

Does the KX2 do the same thing on CW?

Did Elecraft say anything about doing a TX gain calibration? This can be done
with the KX2 utility although I haven’t done it on mine, just on my K3. It sets
the per-band gain coefficients Be sure to save the current CONFIG file so you
can restore it if needed. You will need a good dummy load an a stable power
source. The procedure is on p. 38 of the Rev A5 Manual.

Good luck,

The KX2 uses a control loop to set power. Make sure you have sufficient audio
drive to energize the loop. Using the ALC display set the MIC GAIN so you have
5-7 bars on voice peaks, per the manual.

What MIC are you using? Have you tried the internal MIC?

[Elecraft] WTB: KAT-100 Autotuner for K2

2021-01-26 Thread Brian Moore via Elecraft
Hello -

Happy customer and my first post here on the reflector. I have had a K2/10 for
about two years and enjoy using it as my primary rig for both CW and SSB. I
have other QRP rigs and I really need a 100W transceiver, so I recently made
the decision to upgrade my K2 with the internal KPA-100. I would also like to
get the matching KAT100, but unfortunately the ATU is no longer available from
Elecraft. Does anyone have a KAT100 sitting around that they are no longer
using and would be willing to part with for the right price? My email can be
found on QRZ.

I got a MFJ 10-30m loop at a SK sale. The original owner had never got it to
work. The rotor vanes had fallen apart. The fixed vanes were welded to the

couldn't hear the buzzer for finding the tune point, it was too high in
audio frequency for my old ears, cured by adding a capacitor to the circuit.

[Elecraft] using K2 as external VFO for vintage tube rig

2020-11-21 Thread Brian
Hi, I wonder if anyone can enlighten me on this...

A few days ago I came across a posting where someone said they were using their
'PLL VFO' aka their K2 as the substitute VFO (in absence of the xmtr having
one) or as a crystal substitute.

OK, how does he do that? Is he just running key-down at a low power of
continuously keyed signal OR essentially keying the K2 at low power as a
keyed-VFO into his vintage rig? Anyone want to venture a guess?

I know I used to be able to use an old Hallicrafters tube VFO (Master
Oscillator) as a continuous running VFO (irritating since the signal could be
heard in the receiver if you did not turn off the final tube power when in
receive) or it could be run as a keyed VFO, where the keying keyed the cathode
of the final tube. So, similar kind of thing if attempted with K2?

Anyone else done this? I have a few decent QRP rigs I could conceivably use as
VFO / xtal sub / master oscillator ... whatever term to drive my older tube
rigs (and avoid the mess of DDS). Since I don't do 80m all that much, a 40m
signal from a K2 or some other QRP rig would suffice to drive 40m, 20m and 15m
as doubling and tripling of signal (IIRC).

tnx

[Elecraft] K4 IF signal 'OUT' for external application useage

2020-09-24 Thread Brian

Looking at the recent (though long from complete) K4 guide, I don't see an IF
OUT per se as I have in the accessory board in my K3 (or in fact the output I/Q
from the KX3 I can run directly into my sound card on the computer). Does
the XVTR IF OUT suffice for this?

The reason I ask is that eventually my LP-PAN is going to die - hopefully not
soon but I have been using it for quite some time now. I use the IF out from
the K3 into the LP-PAN and then into NaP3.

Now I do realize there is a panadapter on the K4 - obviously - but I DO enjoy
(in fact pretty much need) the large computer display for the pana/spectrum
display and DO use the NaP3 software controls for K3 functions on my keyboard
and mouse for tuning and such.
The display on the K4 is not the same thing I don't think. Even with some
keyboard/mouse controls native to the K4 (?) the display size is a deterent to
me as it exists. Apologies to the company. I assume maybe there MIGHT be a
video card OUT re. the K4 panadapter at some time, but that is a maybe.. and
more money.

I won't be nearly the first to get a K4.. down the line probably as I have a
K3S here and a K3 at the in-law's property. If I did get that 'last final rig'
and it was a K4 (Iikely as I don't have much in the shack since 2000 that was
not Elecraft) I would, as an older fellow then.. want the larger visual display
of the computer/IF out/NaP3 sort of solution.

So, do I get some IF out I can use?
tnx

[Elecraft] KX3 what's it worth.

2020-09-07 Thread Brian Comer
I have a KX3, sn 6474, that was mostly used as the tunable IF for 10GHz and
up contests. In 2017 it developed a fault with the external TX control
line.. This occurred just before the 10 GHz and up contest and I ending up
buying a new KX3 and sending this one back to Elecraft for repair. It has
sat idle since then. I have not seen what used KX3 are going for recently
and ask what is it worth ? I need to make a decision on whether to sell it,
or still keep it as a spare. It is a basic KX3 with only the roofing filter
added.

[Elecraft] KPA1500 USB not working

2020-08-04 Thread Brian F. Wruble
For some reason, I cannot connect to my KPA1500 using the USB port. With 2
different PCs, connecting to the USZ port does not result in the creation
of a virtual port. I used to be able to talk to the amp using the utility
program and the KPA1500 USB, but now I cannot. Can anybody suggest things
for me to try?

I have reason to connect two KPA 500s in series. What is the max power that
can be input to a KPA 500 when it is turned off?

[Elecraft] K3 hears nothing.... my old issue of of K3S IF signals seen in P3 and NaP3 but nothing heard

2020-07-28 Thread Brian
You can see my message below. I think all the threads on this and responses are
here.
http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3S-IF-signals-seen-in-P3-and-NaP3-but-nothing-heard-td7653733.html

In any case, though I think I had to do this a couple times, in the end that
last time combined with a bit of DeOxit on the TMP
connectors (male and socket) have had no issues for almost a year now.
So FYI, this may or may not be the issue for the fellow who hears no signals on
his K3.
Note that I WAS seeing signals in NaP3, so at that point it was obvious that it
was 'hearing' to a point, so the rest was somewhere and indeed was indeed
within those TMP cables going into and out of the front boards.
Thankfully it does not appear that I will have to resort to obtaining and
installing the 'gold pins'. That would be WORK!

Subject: K3S IF signals seen in P3 and NaP3 but nothing heard

A few weeks back I bought a used K3 upgraded to K3S in many ways, including a
sub-receiver (which I doubt I will use).
Anyhow.. about a week or so in I was in a situation where I could see IF
signals on the P3 (and NaP3) but hear no signals.
I contacted Elecraft service and they felt that if it persisted I might look at
replacing the receiver board at the front (behind display panel) with gold pins
(which could be ordered from DigiKey) but would require removal/replacement of
the pins on the board. Not eager to do that if avoidable.

Anyhow, by the time (day or so) Elecraft had consulted internally and responded
the receiver was once again hearing and presenting signals. I left it at that,
thinking well the radio WAS shipped etc. so maybe some settlement etc.

Anyhow, earlier today (a month later ? ) the same thing happened. So before
pulling the receiver board and re-setting it in the pin socket (hoping for a
better connection) I looked at the other hardware connection there.. the two
TMP plugs/sockets. So I took the two cables out with the TMP plugs on them and
reset them twice.
Behold, signals heard.

I will let this be for now and if it does not repeat then leave it. I will let
you all know if in the short/medium term the program stays away or returns. I
did see ONE reference to this in the mail list archives, but the gold pins were
mentioned there. Nothing re. the accessible and simpler TMP plugs.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 NR & NB

2020-05-23 Thread Brian Hunt
Will the NR "mixed mode" (NRmF5-x and above) where some of the
unprocessed signal is mixed with the processed signal be available on
the K4 as it is on the K3?  I've discovered that feature coupled with
the APF is an excellent way of copying near-the-noise CW signals.

Thanks & 73,
Brian, K0DTJ

Hi Drew,

The K4 has one linear control range of 0-15 for both NR and NB, making
adjustment far simpler. There's virtually no delay in setting up NR.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommended Power for K3/100 for 100% Data Modes

2020-05-22 Thread Brian Hunt
One thing you might check is whether or not your K3 has thermal pads between
the LPA transistors and where they bolt to the bottom cover. I ran across this
when doing some mods and the instructions said to reinstall them but my early
4xxx K3/100F didn't have them. When I asked the Elecraft tech he said they were
added because of the higher duty cycle digital modes. As a minimum make sure
those screws are tight.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3/KX2 remote for FD

2020-05-12 Thread Brian Hunt
We usually set up FD at one of the state beaches here in NorCal but not this
year. Parking is all closed off and no special event permits are being
processed. We will have an individual effort also. I'll be running my KX2 or K1
off the aux battery I pull from the Land Rover just like I would if the big one
hits. CW only so no computer needed except for logging (which can run from
mains power per the rules). Gonna be different!!

Re: [Elecraft] Rig forCW

2020-05-12 Thread Brian Short
I bought a used KX3 with the tuner and roofing filter a couple years ago.
I also bought an attachable paddle from QRPguys. I have not been
looking, but I see very few KX2s for sale used. I guess if you are ordering
(a new one) that isn't a consideration.

I am not out camping or traveling right now, but my KX3 isn't for sale.

Good luck.
