Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Firmware question
Did the KX3 utility detect the new firmware files and load them onto your radio? If not, it is probably an oops where the zip file on the ftp server was prepared incorrectly. In this case, you might need to move the files up a directory level for the utility to find them. If the utility found the files in the new sub directory, then no need to worry, all is good. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 2015-maj-06, at 10:00, jpk5...@cox.net wrote: I updated my KX3 firmware today and discovered something that seems a bit strange. Re: [Elecraft] K2: No audio after fitting KDSP2
I'd start with the audio stage. Inject an audio signal into the AF amp and see if you get anything out. Check the voltages around U9 to make sure they are ok. If the AF amp is working, then step back and check out the muting circuit by injecting your audio signal just before. If you have an oscilloscope, this may be helpful in seeing where the signal is being lost. It may be a dry joint that you disturbed when you were working on the radio. It’s also possible a component has failed (eg. C27) and is shorting out the signal. Or it may be U9 itself has failed. The AF circuitry is fairly simple, so shouldn't be too hard to track down. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 28 Apr 2015, at 5:41 am, Mick Hall mickch...@yahoo.co.uk wrote: Hi. I then realised I did not have the speaker plugged in, so I plugged it in while powered up. I got a loud pop through the speaker, then silence. I thought that perhaps I had missed a menu setting whereby I would have to enable the KDSP2 but couldn’t find anything so obvious. I built the K2 with the Rework Eliminators installed, so I removed the KDSP2 and placed the header back in place and still I had no audio. I have also removed my KSB2 and KIO2 module so now I am back to the bare K2, but still I have no audio. I can only assume that something failed when I plugged in the speaker whilst still powered on. I have tried injecting a signal in with the Elecraft wideband noise generator and the cheap and dirty signal tracing document but with the headphones plugged in and the AF and RF gain at full, I hear nothing at all at any point, only a very faint hissing. Re: [Elecraft] What do I do now?
Download the Elecraft KX3 utility, and make a configuration backup before you do anything. Next, check the firmware version and upgrade that using the same utility. Read the manual and have a play with the functions to see what they do. Later on, you may want to do things like per-band I/Q nulling and temperature compensatin calibration procedures, but those can wait until you've had a chance to become more familiar with the radio. Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KAT2 and KXPA100 with ATU - Correct setup?
I think Don meant *POUT* mode won't work because it retains the L/C setting. CALP mode works fine bypassing the ATU, and this is what I normally use. In fact, I assign the ATU mode menu setting to the PF1 key so I can easily activate/deactivate the KAT2 depending whether I am using the KXPA100 or not. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 1 Apr 2015, at 6:58 am, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Mark, Set the K2 ATU menu parameter to CALP or CALS depending on whether you want to read the Power or SWR between the K2 and the KXPA100. The frequency display alignment is easy enough to do, there is good information about this on the webpage of Don W3FPR: http://www.w3fpr.com/dial_cal.html I recommend the N6KR method which is linked on that page -- tune in WWV either zero-beating against a second AM shortwave receiver, or use spectrogram to see the frequency of the WWV tones, then use the N6KR method to align the VCO/BFO. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 to KXPA100, serial interface?
No, but if you change bands on the K2, a quick tap of the dit paddle will trigger the frequency counter in the KXPA100, and instantly recall the band pass filter/antenna selection/tuning solution for the new frequency. If you want the greater degree of integration that you mention below, you need to look at the KPA100/KAT100. That said, it may well be possible for Elecraft to implement the sort of integration you mention between K2 and KXPA100; it would come down to whether they see it as a worthwhile investment of engineering resources. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 27 Mar 2015, at 6:45 am, Jessie Oberreuter joberreu-elecr...@moselle.com wrote: Will connecting a K2's serial TxD/RxD lines to the KXPA100 (over the RJ45 jack) allow the KXAT3 to automatically follow band and VFO changes? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Roofing filter question
If you have lots of atmospheric noise, you may have too much gain in your revive chain, and should maybe consider switching off the preamp/switching on the attenuator. There is also the NR noise reduction feature which may be useful. However on CW I find that narrowing the PBT bandwidth cuts out a lot of the band noise. As someone else stated, a roofing filter is not going to help you with this sort of problem; a roofing filter is to protect against strong stations on nearby frequencies so you don't get problems like AGC pumping and undesired mixing products. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 25 Mar 2015, at 1:49 pm, Fred Jensen k6...@foothill.net wrote: Joshua, Probably not. So long as the atmospheric noise is not saturating the ADC, reducing the DSP BW is the only really effective way to reduce it's impact, and that's a lot easier on CW than on SSB. Different roofing filters are not likely to make much difference at all unless they're more narrow than your DSP setting. So, advice please - what is the smallest (physically the smallest) Winows-running computer other than a laptop or an all-in-one that would serve well for all of the computer control, logging, and etc. goodies one might reasonably hang on a K-line station? Real estate on my desk is at a real premium, and knee-hole space is even less. (The Dell Inspirion 3000 small format is too big.) Thanks in advance . . . Re: [Elecraft] K3 DATA A vs USB for JT65/JT9
You can use DATA-A to do LSB too. I do this when I set up the KX3 for packet radio, because it places the LO just nicely so I can also monitor the local CW calling channel and my club's SSB frequency, using a separate SDR app on my PC. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 17 Mar 2015, at 12:04 pm, Jim Brown j...@audiosystemsgroup.com wrote: On Mon,3/16/2015 5:43 PM, Sam Morgan wrote: I have run DATA A successfully for at least 5-6 years and being a creature of habit, I hate to switch to USB unless I am forced to. No, the KPA100/KAT100 only works with K2. For a solution that works with K2/K3/KX3 you need the KXPA100/KXAT100. Consider also a KXPA100/KXAT100 combo. Not quite as well integrated as the KPA100/KAT100, and you may need to add a simple keying circuit to the K2, but it works very nicely with the K2, and you have more flexibility to use it with other radios as well. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 14 Mar 2015, at 2:58 am, Paul Knight wd8...@gmail.com wrote: Greetings. Re: [Elecraft] Back in time question
For calibrating the dial frequency, a second AM SW receiver is helpful. Tune it in to WWV, then tune the K2 into WWV until the tones match exactly (zero beat), then run the calibration procedures. That will get you close enough that the K2's DACs become the limiting factor. Spectrogram (free software on your PC that uses the sound card to display the audio coming out of your radio) can be helpful with the above if you don't have a musical ear, and I think it is pretty much essential for the filter calibration (you can use the default settings provided in the manual to get more or less in the ballpark, but they are far from ideal). If you have an external power meter, that can be useful for peaking the band pass filters. A DL2 dummy load with DMM would also work, or you could even use the internal power meter (but the resolution is somewhat limited) Don W3FPR has a web page that is a treasure trove of handy K2 information: http://www.w3fpr.com/ 73, Matt VK2RQ On 5 Mar 2015, at 4:43 am, Doug Hensley w...@hotmail.com wrote: What test equipment is needed to accurately perform the alignment and proper tuning of a used K1 or K2 ? Re: [Elecraft] RX SHFT=8.0 I.F. Image (16 kHz) Nulling
Ok, I reviewed the procedure -- it's been a long time since I did it. I think there is an error in the procedure. What you should do is tune the KX3 to the *same* frequency as your signal source. You should be in CW normal mode, RIT off, and you should verify that the signal source is giving a strong signal S9 to S9+30dB. If it is not in this range, you should set the preamp/attenuator settings to bring it in range. *Now* you tune the KX3 VFO up 16 kHz, and set the RIT to -1.1. The signal you now hear should be the image, which you should try to null out. Sorry for the confusion before, I should have reviewed the procedure before commenting. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 17 Feb 2015, at 7:14 am, Matt VK2RQ matt.vk...@gmail.com wrote: Hook up the RX I/Q output to a pan adapter program on your PC (enable the output first, use a stereo input on your PC) and you'll be able to see the amount of shift between your signal source and the KX3's LO, and you should also be able to see the image. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2
So Don, that seems to imply that if you want to do CAT control of the K2 with an external EC2 enclosure, you need to make up a special cable that plugs in to the basic K2 K2IO connector and breaks out the computer control lines to one DB9 serial port connector, and runs the rest of the lines to the EC2 enclosure. Am I understanding this correctly? Also, if a KPA100 was installed in the EC2 enclosure, it is possible to switch the lid of the EC2 over to the K2/10 in order to get a K2/100? Of course, this would mean leaving the KAT100 behind in the EC2 enclosure. Maybe the KAT100 could be put in a EC1 enclosure, so the home config is K2/10 + KPA100 in EC2 + KAT100 in EC1, and the portable QRO config is K2/100 + optional KAT100 in EC1. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 4 Jan 2015, at 7:59 am, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Brian, The web pages have gone away, but the instructions are quite easy. First, you need the KIO2 installed in the base K2. Build the KAT100-2, just follow instructions - build the cable for the KAT100 as instructed in the manual. Test and align it with the K2/10 at 10 watts - the RF output from the K2 will be from ANT1 if you have the KAT2 installed. Then build the KPA100. Do the alignment, test and calibration with it connected as normal to the base K2. Then install the KPA100 in the EC2 enclosure. It plugs right into the KAT100-2 You will have to remove pin 4 from the ribbon cable connector. Connect a BNC to BNC cable between the base K2 ANT1 connector, a short UHF to UHF cable between the KPA100 ANT jack to the KAT100 RF IN jack. The control cable connector with the two cables plugs into the KIO2 and the other male connector plugs into either the KAT100 or the KPA100 DB-9 connector. The K2 senses the presence of both the KPA100 and the KAT2 and automatically forces the KAT2 to bypass and ANT1. Operation is automatic and seamless. To use the K2/10 for portable operation, remove the BNC cable from ANT1 and remove the control cable - the K2 will then revert to the 10 watt transceiver with the KAT2 active. Normally in the external KAT100-2/KPA100 combination, the power for the KAT100 comes through the KPA100 APP power cable. If you want to set it up so the K2 will revert to low power automatically if the AC powered large power supply goes down in an AC power failure, you must power *both* the base K2 and the KAT100 from a battery backed supply. The switch to low power will then be automatic if the large power source goes down. Even though the KPA100 duplicates the AUX IO port of the KIO2, the computer connection part of that connector will not be functional when mounted in the EC2 enclosure. Computer communications must be from the KIO2. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/4/2015 12:42 AM, Brian Denley wrote: I am building a KAT100 and KPA100 in an separate EC2 housing. Re: [Elecraft] K2/100?
First I would say though that one of the big reasons to get a K2 is the fun/experiences of building it yourself. If you are farming that out to someone else, then I would be thinking carefully if K2 is the right option, or whether a more modern design radio might fit the bill better (like KX3, K3, or even, dare I say it here, a brand Y/I/K radio) Assuming you go with a K2, then if you want to take the K2 portable QRP, you need to think about whether you want to install the KPA100 in the same chassis as the K2, or whether you want to put it in a separate enclosure, or maybe even consider a separate amplifier like the KXPA100. Below are some pros/cons of the different options. KPA100 in same enclosure as K2: + one easy convenient fully integrated package + if you want to run the radio as QRP, just power it using the coaxial power connector, and the KPA100 is bypassed - have to lug the heavy KPA100 with you when you go portable - if you want an ATU, it will need to be separate - can’t put the 20W QRP ATU in the K2 enclosure (need to swap lids, which is a hassle), battery option, etc. (actually, I would prefer to run the K2 off external LiFePO4 batteries rather than put an SLA inside) KPA100 in separate enclosure as K2: + full integration between K2 and amplifier + can leave the KPA100 behind when you go QRP + can put a 100W ATU in the same enclosure as the KPA100 + can also equip K2 with 20W ATU, battery, etc. ready for portable operation - takes more desk space - if you want to go QRO portable, you need to take two enclosures - can’t use the KPA100 with any other radios besides K2 K2 with separate KXPA100 amplifier: + can leave amplifier behind when going QRP portable + can equip K2 with 20W ATU, battery, etc. + flexibility to use the amplifier with other radios, like KX3, FT817, etc. + can put 100W ATU in same enclosure as KXPA100 - integration with K2 not quite as good as KPA100/KAT100 - may need to build extra keying circuit - takes desk space/need to take two boxes for QRO portable Other people on the list may have further comments based on their experiences (I myself ended up going for the third KXPA100 option, mainly because I had a KX3 already). 73, Matt VK2RQ On 19 Dec 2014, at 12:30 pm, Alan KB7MBI via Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net wrote: I am considering having a kit builder assemble a K2/100 for me to replace my current station (see QRZ) Before making the commitment I would like to chat with someone who owns a K2/100 and hear the PROs and CONs and any issues. There is no change in test signal level for FL2 and FL3 when the automatic null procedure (or manual for that matter) is running. Screen ends up with Gain 00. Anomaly exists on all bands. In actual operation, the filters seem to work properly, and the display indications for width and filter selection are as they should be. Re: [Elecraft] HI Current
Is that 12.1V reading during receive or transmit (the voltage will tend to sag when pulling higher currents during transmit)? I don't have a K3, but I do have a KXPA100, and I find that it will not develop a full 100W if I only feed it only 12V -- it works much better with a supply of 14V. The impedance of the antenna will vary from band to band -- if the impedance happens to work out lower on 20m than on the other bands, then the extra current draw on that band together with the supply voltage at the low end of the range may be enough to trip the high current alarm in your PA. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 16 Dec 2014, at 4:03 am, Ken wa8...@gmail.com wrote: In my case, the K3’s internal volt meter is indicating 12.1v, well above the minimum specs. It's not just that, a varying signal can also cause the amp's internal frequency counter to misread your current frequency. If the amp thinks you moved frequency, it can tickle the ATU. The frequency counter inertia adjustment in the latest firmware addresses this issue very effectively, and my amp/ATU has been a rock-solid performer since loading that latest KXPA100 firmware release. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 9 Dec 2014, at 7:01 am, Cady, Fred fc...@ece.montana.edu wrote: The SWR circuitry in the KXAT100 (and KAT500) measure the forward and reverse voltage values at different times. They cannot be measured simultaneously because they don't have dual A/D converters or sample-and-hold circuits. To be sure, there is only a short time between sampling the forward and reverse directions but if your output power is changing with time as it will with a high speed CW signals and more especially and more troublesomely with a SSB signal, the SWR metering may indicate an incorrect value. If you have the tuner in AUTO mode, this may trigger a retune. For this reason it is best to operate either of these tuners in MAN mode and train the tuner(s) to store good L-C values for different frequencies in each of your operational bands. The tuners store this information in frequency buckets and when they detect the frequency within that bucker they recall the L-C values and if they need to be changed they will be. Summary: Train the tuner so that it can remember the L-C values to use for a specific range of frequencies. Don't use AUTO mode; use MAN mode. Re: [Elecraft] New PSK set up - no joy
I do a bit of digital modes on the KX3, and it was a bit of a pain swapping between SSB/CW and the PC, until I set it up with an audio switch (for TX), mixer (for RX) and wrote some a couple of macros to toggle the menu settings between the different modes. For the K3, it would be simpler, since you get separate line in/line out connections. Having said that, a lot of the time for general rag chewing I'll just jump over to the K2, which is all set up with paddle/microphone ready to go :-) So I understand your position. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 6 Dec 2014, at 12:12 am, W2BLC w2...@nycap.rr.com wrote: I spent a bunch of time and effort setting up my K3 for PSK and RTTY - with only mediocre success - followed by setting up the same K3 with my Signalink USB - also with questionable results. The biggest problem I had was going from digital back to SSB. I always had to keep a list of the menu changes needed. Generally, I operate 95% SSB and the rest on digital or CW. Hence, it was not worth my time to switch back and forth. It was too complicated. Instead, I now run the Signalink USB with my TS-480. Set the Signalink up for the 480 and got the wire to plug it into the 480. Then I made a couple of quick settings on the Signalink and all is good. Now when I want to do digital - I turn the 480 on, turn the Signalink on, set mode to USB and select the frequency - no other changes to anything. Power output is controlled by drive from the Signalink (I just know someone is going to ask). When I want to change back to voice - I pick up the mic and talk - no changes to anything. Now I can leave the K3 alone and not disturb all my menu settings that optimize my SSB operation. Probably not the answer anyone is looking for - but, it sure works for me. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to matt.vk...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

The following article questions the value of iambic keying, makes for an interesting read: http://www.morsex.com/pubs/iambicmyth.pdf For the speeds I typically plod along at, around the 20wpm mark, the iambic keying works quite well, and feels nice. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 2 Dec 2014, at 11:37 am, Ken wa8...@gmail.com wrote: Yes, I’ve looked up and understand the theory of Iambic keying but 1) it’s been weird to try and 2) I haven’t noticed any advantage for me. For example. CQ (for a right handed keyer) would use the following sequence: Press right paddle and immediately squeeze both paddles without letting go the right paddle. Hold that squeeze until the first -.-. is sent, then let go for the inter-character space. To send the 'Q' press the right paddle and wait until the start of the second dash, then squeeze both paddles and immediately let go of the left hand paddle whilst continuing to briefly hold the right hand paddle until you're sure the entire --.- sequence has been sent, then let go the right paddle.ready to send whatever you want to come next. Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2m CW problem
Very interesting -- I hooked the KX3 up to a scope, set it at 30wpm on 2m with VOX OFF, and sent a continual stream of dits. This is what I saw: http://www.vk2rq.ampr.org//images/IMG_0271.jpg The dits are in fact quite uneven (some nearly twice as long as others), and if you listen to a continuous stream of dits it is indeed obvious to the ear. Also as you say, this problem does not occur on the other bands. It seems there may be some sort of timing issue in the firmware; I guess this will get added somewhere on the to-do list. 73, Matt VK2RQ. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - SWR Display of --
Above 10W of power, the KX3 will disable the internal KXAT3 ATU and rely on the amplifier to supply the SWR readings over the ACC1 cable. However, the SWR bridge for the amplifier is part of the KXAT100 ATU option for the amplifier, so if this option is not equipped, the amplifier will not be able to supply any SWR readings. I'm guessing this is the reason you are seeing the '--' dashes for SWR when operating above 10W. Thanks Dick, that's good to know. Sound strange. Do you have the SSB module installed, and have set FL1 to OP1? In that case, when you switch from FL1 to FL2, you are changing from the crystal filter on the SSB module to the crystal filter on the main RF board. Maybe if there is a problem (eg bad solder joint, component in wrong place) on the SSB module, then maybe this is why you observe a difference in the volume? 73, Matt VK2RQ On 21 Nov 2014, at 6:09 am, Eddy via Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net wrote: Greeting all to all the K2 wizards out there! Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Voice Monitor
Besides bone conduction, another source of delay may be the DSP processing inside the KX3 itself. This can wreak havoc with your CW side tone for example if you add an aftermarket audio DSP to a radio. Elecraft have obviously taken steps to make sure that the KX3 doesn't have an issue with CW sidetone, but in the case of voice where they are doing audio equalisation for example, they may be using some long FIR filters that introduce a bit of delay. Can't say I've really noticed, because I rarely use the KX3 on fone, and never with monitor on fone. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 20 Nov 2014, at 12:37 pm, David DeGeorge d...@degeorge.org wrote: Not so sure that I buy the bone conduction theory; I use the same headset with my ICOM-7600 and its monitor, same head, same bones :-), but no effect. It isn’t a very big deal but I am concerned that there some sort of RF leakage internal to the KX3 that is being picked up by the monitor. According to the portable book the transmit path including the TX equalizer are not in the circuit when making a DVR ― page 100. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 CW Sidetone Pitch
Hi Phil, The following article is a good introduction to demodulating SSB in DSP: https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/98qex003.pdf It has a bit of maths without going too overboard, and gives you the flavour of how it works. But simplifying as much as possible: - based on the sidetone setting eg. at 700Hz, the DSP will produce a sine wave audio output at 700Hz and add it to the output audio of the radio demodulator. - the frequency of local oscillator in the KX3 is set to the frequency of the signal of interest plus 700Hz, and put through a quadrature mixer. This brings the signal down to a baseband at 700Hz. - the I and Q output of the mixer is sampled by an A-D converter, and the maths mentioned in the article linked above is used to remove the opposite sideband image, and you are left wi the desired signal at 700Hz. When mixed with the 700Hz sidetone, you hear a single tone. - if you tune the VFO a bit, it moves the local oscillator, and the demodulate signal is no longer exactly at 700Hz. You will hear the resulting signal beat against the 700Hz generated sidetone. - when you transmit, it will be based on the sidetone frequency, eg. 700Hz. If you have zero-beating in the receiver, then you know the output of the transmitter will exactly match the received signal frequency. If we select CW-R, then we put the LO 700Hz below the signal of interest. If we select other features like IF SHFT=8kHz, dual watch, etc. then the maths gets a bit more complicated, but essentially amounts to implementing a second mixer stage in DSP software. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 18 Nov 2014, at 11:42 am, Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: Don, Thanks for the comments. It is not a function of the VFO, it is just a constant tone. The demodulated audio (from the signal you are listening to) does vary with the VFO setting. So yes, the selected sidetone pitch tells the DSP not only what spot pitch to send, it also is used to figure out how much frequency offset to use on the signal received as a result of the VFO setting. I can't give you the DSP math to produce that, but Lyle certainly could. I suspect the demodulated signal tones and the sidetone are simply added - that is at least the result in the analog world. I do know the BFO/signal relationship is a mixer process and if I recall that in DSP math is some sort of multiplication process - as you can tell, I am not well steeped in DSP techniques, but I do recall a bit of signal processing math from my college days even though that was 54 years ago and I did not use that theoretical level of it, so much has become 'fuzzy' with time. Perhaps some study of DSP algorithms would help you out. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/17/2014 5:51 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: OK, so side tone generator is a DSP function. But, your answer leaves a lot of details out. So, if I am using the side tone generator to zero beat another CW station, I do two things. One, I adjust the sidetone pitch to something I prefer. Two, for the actual CW station, I adjust the VFO until the pitch of the CW signal closely matches my sidetone pitch. (I know, I could push the spot button too and I usually do that). If this is true, then the sidetone generation itself is a function of the VFO frequency, that is, it is, say, 600 Hz away for example in a BFO kind of way. I was looking for a description of more of the details of how this was implemented and I admit it is to satisfy my curiosity. Math functions don't scare me though, I did my graduate work in Math. One other thing I forgot to mention, with KPA100, you get a KIO2 RS232 CAT interface for free. I had to pay extra to add one into my QRP K2. Of course if you are swapping the top of your K2 to change between QRP and QRO modes, then you might want a KIO2 for the QRP lid anyway. Of course, you can run a K2 fitted with a KPA100 in QRP mode by powering it off the coaxial power connected instead of the Anderson power pole input, but then you won't have a KAT2 ATU, and will need something external. The description below is a little vague, so hard to really comment. - birdies: do you observe these with no antenna connected to the 2m SMA socket? On which frequencies? Is it consistent? - instabilities: what exactly do you observe when you encounter one of these instabilities? - microphone effects: I guess you probably don't mean microphonics. Re: [Elecraft] K2 receiver sensitivity on 12 and 10 Meters
Here are some other ideas: I wonder if switching off the AGC makes much difference? If so, maybe it is kicking in too early, and you may need to look at setting the threshold (I think there are procedures in the K2 manual for this). You said peaking the band pass filter didn't help much (I guess you did this in the right order, as described in the manual?) What about the IF filter L34 adjustment? That could affect overall gain. Although not really related to sensitivity, while you are running alignment procedures, may as well go the whole way and check the setup of the crystal filter with spectrogram. It may be interesting to measure the sensitivity to see if there may be a problem. The following webpage may be a useful reference: http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/k2_rx_sensitivity.htm When I built my K2, I used the measurement procedure in the XG3 signal generator manual to measure the sensitivity as a sanity check to see if I'd built it properly. The result came out somewhere in the ballpark of the figure published in Rob Sherwood's receiver performance list. http://www.sherweng.com/table.html There is an application note on the Elecraft website dealing with increasing the K2 sensitivity, although as the article mentions, there are trade offs: http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/RX_Gain_application_note.htm 73, Matt VK2RQ On 7 Nov 2014, at 12:27 am, Hans J Rasmusen OZ7BQ oz...@yahoo.dk wrote: Dear Don and Matt,Thank you for your comments. That should produce the best setting for both transmit and receive. If connecting the antenna when tuned to those bands results in an increase in noise in the receiver, you have all the sensitivity you can use. You should be using real signals (but weak ones) to compare receiver sensitivity - if you are comparing on the basis of the 'loudness' of the noise heard, that can create a false impression. If you are hearing a reasonable increase in atmospheric static noise when connecting an antenna on 12/10m, then any further increase in sensitivity is wasted and not making efficient use of the receiver's available dynamic range. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 6 Nov 2014, at 8:41 am, Hans J Rasmusen OZ7BQ oz...@yahoo.dk wrote: My K2 (ser 04069) appears to lack a bit of receiver sensitivity on 12 and 10 Meters. Re: [Elecraft] OK... I give up on what is happening...
To understand what sideband the radio is on in CW mode, listen to the radio's speaker and tune up the band. If the signals you hear go UP in pitch as you tune UP the band, it is using LSB. If the pitch of the signals goes DOWN as you tune UP the band, the radio is using USB. Once you understand whether the radio is set to use LSB or USB for a particular band, you can then set your digital mode software to match. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 5 Nov 2014, at 2:58 am, David Cole d...@nk7z.net wrote: Hi Mike, Thanks for that input... [Elecraft] [KX3] RX I/Q signals reversed on 2m
That's interesting, the RX I/Q signal lines appear to be reversed when operating the KX3 on 2m. I guess this makes sense, if you consider the 2m module is using the x4 output of the KX3's local oscillator, so that if you tune to 144MHz for example, the LO would be running at 48MHz, so that in the 2m module the 144Mhz signal would be mixed with a 4x48=192MHz signal. This would place the USB image at 192+144=336MHz, which is discarded, and then place the LSB image (192-144) at 48MHz, which is then downshifted to 0MHz by the 48MHz LO in the main receiver. Because the LSB image is the one that is used, the frequencies appear reversed when you look at then on the I/Q output. By swapping the I Q signals, you can effectively reverse the frequencies a second time, and get a normal display on the waterfall. Of course, this is taken care of automatically in the PX3 :-) 73, Matt VK2RQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

With this recent discussion around frequency references, some on this reflector may be interested in this GPS-locked agile frequency reference module that will cost you less than $30 delivered: https://sites.google.com/site/g4zfqradio/u-blox_neo-6-7 The output is programable from 1Hz up to 10MHz. You can't use it directly to drove the 10MHz reference input of the K3; if the selected output frequency doesn't divide evenly into 48MHz, then you will get some short-term jitter in the output that you would need to clean up with some sort of TXCO PLL type of arrangement. But it is great for calibrating your frequency counter (the long gating time averages out any short term jitter), and the output is rock-steady and accurate source to zero-beat your radio against if you select an output like eg. 1, 3, 4, 6 or 8MHz. Output is a square wave, so harmonics could also be used. 73, Matt VK2RQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Repeat extended VFO temp. comp. proc.
If you just mucked up refcal right at the end, no need to redo the whole procedure, you just need to set the refcal so that the dial frequency lines up when you tune to a known frequency. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and installing KSB2 160m
I just installed the KSB2 module by the book, and it worked no problem. One thing you may want to consider is the UNPCB microphone adapter kit, which lets you easily re-jumper the microphone socket on the K2 to make it compatible with different types of microphones without having to break down the whole radio. I didn't see a need for this flexibility in my particular case, so I didn't bother with that option, but if you may conceivably use the K2 with different microphones, it would be a nice feature. If you don't get the mic adapter, and you use the Elecraft MH2 microphone, you can just jumper the standard headers directly across with the jumpers provided in the kit. If you want to use a different microphone, then there is a nice hack where you use a computer connector to make a jumpering block that lets you make connections without wire wrapping or damaging the microphone jumpering PCB headers on the control board. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 10 Oct 2014, at 3:25 am, Doug Hensley w...@hotmail.com wrote: Sorry for the bad subject line on my first message. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and installing KSB2 160m
Don's probably right -- I ordered the MH2 microphone together with the KSB2 kit, and I think the jumpers were indeed packaged with the microphone. You can use the two-pin computer jumpers if you are just doing a direct 1:1 jumpering of the configuration header. If you are using a different type of microphone, here is the computer connector hack I was thinking of: http://folk.uio.no/sverre/LA3ZA/blog/K2/N0SS/k2_mic_cfg_hdr.pdf 73, Matt VK2RQ On 10 Oct 2014, at 8:44 am, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: An added note - the jumpers that Matt is referring to are supplied with the MH2 and the Elecraft Proset K2 microphones - they are NOT supplied with the KSB2 kit. Examples: -- for the Elecraft microphones, connect all pins straight across and solder the 5.6k resistor between pins 1 and 6 on the back of the microphone jack. -- for Kenwood dynamic microphones put jumpers straight across all pins except for mic pins 5 and 6 ( no resistor for dynamic mics) -- for other microphones, refer to the KSB2 instructions. -- If you have a Heil microphone (not the Elecraft variety) it will have an adapter - wire the mic configuration header to correspond with the adapter used (Kenwood, Yaesu, or Icom). 73, Don W3FPR On 10/9/2014 5:11 PM, Matt VK2RQ wrote: If you don't get the mic adapter, and you use the Elecraft MH2 microphone, you can just jumper the standard headers directly across with the jumpers provided in the kit. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to matt.vk...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Build #7552
Te kit should fit together without needing to use longer screws, etc.. If it doesn't, then it indicates you may have done something wrong. Are the PCB headers sitting properly flush wi the board, or are they sticking up a bit, possibly causing misalignment? Are you sure you used the right size standoffs? If you used ones that are too short, then this could put stress on the board when you tighten the screws. If all the connectors and securing hardware is correctly installed, then erratic behaviour could be an indication of further dry joints. It is worth to inspect all the joints with a magnifying glass and a strong light, although poor joints are not always obvious to the eye. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 29 Sep 2014, at 12:14 pm, Kevin Schache hillsla...@internode.on.net wrote: Many thanks to Don and others who responded. The problem has been fixed, I found a suspect dry joint on the PTT/ATT switch. I also checked the new encoder which appeared ok but I did insert a very thin piece of insulation between the new encoder and the control board to make sure. All tests now appear ok UNTIL I re-insert and tighten the two holding screws in the Control Board. When these are tightened, the control board is pulled about 1/8th inch toward front panel, probably stressing both boards, causing the display to be erratic (ELICRAFT instead of ELECRAFT for example), and erratic other test results. Stressing the boards may be causing movement in sockets where they are used. Does it matter if I leave those two screws out? Another option would be to put in longer screws and not tighten them so much, or perhaps a better suggestion maybe to increase the spacer length marginally, so that there is no stressing. 73, Kev VK5KS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to matt.vk...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Using dual watch with RX SHFT=8kHz
A long long time ago on another mail list there was a discussion about why it was not possible to use dual watch together with the RX SHFT set to an 8kHz shift. If this would be implemented in a straightforward way, such a shift would result in an asymmetry in range of frequencies your second VFO could cover above and below the first VFO (eg. ADC covers LO+/-15kHz, VFO_A is LO+8kHz, so VFO_B can range from VFO_A-23kHz to VFO_A+7kHz. However, if you tried to set VFO_B to greater than VFO_A+7kHz, one possibility would be for the KX3 to change the shift from LO+8KHz to LO-8kHz. This would then permit coverage from VFO_A-7khz to VFO_A+23kHz. Everything would seem to be on the opposite sideband, so the demodulation code would need to compensate. By combining these two modes of operation, the dual watch could be extended so VFO_B has a ranges of VFO_A +/-23kHz. If you used a greater IF shift than 8kHz, say 11kHz for example, then this could extend the range even further, say +/-26kHz. Regardless whether such such extended coverage is implemented for dual watch, the PX3 would need to behave sensibly when using of dual watch with IF shift. 73, Matt VK2RQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] [Bulk] Re: K2 Straight key auto detect
For my K2, I made a short adapter cable, 3.5mm female to 3.5mm stereo male, and I soldered a couple of diodes inside the one of the 3.5mm connectors to bring both tip and sleeve of the male connector to ground when the tip of the female connector is grounded by a straight key. This goes into one of the female sockets on a 2x3.5mm female stereo to 1x3.5mm male stereo Y-adapter cable that is designed so one iPod can be shared with two sets of ear plugs. My paddle goes into the other female socket on the Y-cable, and the Y-cable goes into my K2. I can then easily move between paddle and straight key, and the K2 will auto detect. In addition, the Y-cable means I don't have to fumble around at the back of the radio if I want to swap over some different keying devices. I might have mentioned this before, but the K2 is a great radio :-) 73, Matt VK2RQ On 19 Sep 2014, at 1:06 pm, Gene N4FZ felsumm...@comcast.net wrote: Thanks once again Don, I will solder up a stereo plug as you say, then try. The K2/10 with KXPA100/KXAT100 is a very nice combo. The amp auto-senses the frequency, and recalls the appropriate antenna and tuning solution for that frequency. [Elecraft] [KX3] Foxhunting with the KX3 2m module
I saw the following blog post about someone using the KX3 with 2m transverter for fox hunting: http://www.n4kgl.info/2014/09/the-kx3-2-meter-module-is-handy-for-fox.html This sounds like a great idea, and would work well with the adjustable attenuator mini module, if you put it in a metal box. Not too sure about the strain of mounting an antenna directly on the SMA connector though. If the KX3 had a feature where it would output a tone proportional to signal strength, then this might be a good convincer when deciding on the 2m module. 73, Matt VK2RQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KSB2 Filter alignment question
You did the right thing using spectrogram to align the filters -- the values in the manual are really only a rough guide for those who don't have access to more advanced alignment methods such as spectrogram. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 2 Sep 2014, at 10:13 pm, Gareth - M5KVK m5...@m5kvk.org wrote: K2 serial 03885 fitted with KSB Rev C board. When I installed the KSB2 board recently, I went through the process of setting up the BFOs as per the KSB2 manual. However, I just downloaded Spectrogram and went through N0SS's procedure for setting up the filters. Most of the adjusted settings were within 2-300Hz of those in the manual (all on the higher side), but a couple were moved quite a bit. I'm interested in others' experiences in this area. The outliers were USB FL2 which needed to be 500Hz higher and USB FL3 which needed to be 700Hz higher. The main issue when looking with Spectrogram was that the USB spectrum was far too bassy when the BFOs were set as per the manual. Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter plots
You are probably using a cached version of the K3 roofing filter page. In the current version of that page, the URL to the filter plots is missing the K3 directory in the URL. If you add it in manually, you get: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_filter_plots.htm Which does work, but the filter plots are all blank. Again, probably due to missing elements in the directory path in the URLs to the images. This is similar to a problem that was reported with the K3 FAQ page -- it would seem whatever software Elecraft is using to manage their web page is ignoring the site directory structure when forming links and is pointing them all to the root document directory. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 3 Sep 2014, at 7:42 am, Phil Wheeler w...@socal.rr.com wrote: The links work for me -- but the plots are blank. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FAQ webpage broken?
No need to scroll down with the link I provided -- the browser will place the corresponding anchor at the top of the window (unless the anchor is too close to the bottom of the page). The links at the top of the FAQ page are indeed all broken, and need to include the file name of the FAQ page immediately before the #tag. 73, Matt VK2RQ On 1 Sep 2014, at 9:10 am, Phil Wheeler w...@socal.rr.com wrote: Yes, works if you scroll down, Matt -- which I had not thought to do.
