Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Firmware question

2015-05-06 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Did the KX3 utility detect the new firmware files and load them onto your
radio? If not, it is probably an oops where the zip file on the ftp server
was prepared incorrectly. In this case, you might need to move the files up a
directory level for the utility to find them. If the utility found the files in
the new sub directory, then no need to worry, all is good.

 C:/Users/Jim -

For the two previous times I installed the KX3 firmware, it created a
 folder (all beginning as /fmcu0###):

fmcu0227 = MCU 02.27
fmcu0230 = MCU 02.30

but when I installed the most recent version, it installed the MCU
version (02.33) but created the folder for it as /fmcu0300,i.e., /fmcu0300

Since this is a departure from the previous KX3 firmware installations,
I'm curious if this is a change or an ooops?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: No audio after fitting KDSP2

2015-04-27 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I'd start with the audio stage. Inject an audio signal into the AF amp and see
if you get anything out. Check the voltages around U9 to make sure they are ok.
If the AF amp is working, then step back and check out the muting circuit by
injecting your audio signal just before. If you have an oscilloscope, this may
be helpful in seeing where the signal is being lost. It may be a dry joint that
you disturbed when you were working on the radio. It’s also possible a
component has failed (eg. C27) and is shorting out the signal. Or it may be U9
itself has failed. The AF circuitry is fairly simple, so shouldn't be too hard
to track down.

 Hi.

My K2 has been working fine for a few months now and I was finding the

 KDSP2 DSP filter.

The build went fine and so did the install. After turning on the K2 I checked
that the menu settings were all there and followed the manual. I then
realised I did not have the speaker plugged in, so I plugged it in while
powered up. I got a loud pop through the speaker, then silence.

I thought that perhaps I had missed a menu setting whereby I would have to
enable the KDSP2 but couldn’t find anything so obvious.

I built the K2 with the Rework Eliminators installed, so I removed the KDSP2
and placed the header back in place and still I had no audio. I have also
removed my KSB2 and KIO2 module so now I am back to the bare K2, but still I
 have no audio.

I can only assume that something failed when I plugged in the speaker whilst
 still powered on.

I have tried injecting a signal in with the Elecraft wideband noise generator
and the cheap and dirty signal tracing document but with the headphones
plugged in and the AF and RF gain at full, I hear nothing at all at any
point, only a very faint hissing. Although the signal does register on the S
 meter.

I have also followed the troubleshooting in the manual and gone through the
full alignment procedure as recommended but still no luck.

Could someone help with a place to begin to try and track down the faulty
 component or components.
 .
 Many thanks

Re: [Elecraft] What do I do now?

Download the Elecraft KX3 utility, and make a configuration backup before you
do anything. Next, check the firmware version and upgrade that using the same
utility. Read the manual and have a play with the functions to see what they
do. Later on, you may want to do things like per-band I/Q nulling and
temperature compensatin calibration procedures, but those can wait until you've
had a chance to become more familiar with the radio. Enjoy!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 with KAT2 and KXPA100 with ATU - Correct setup?

I think Don meant *POUT* mode won't work because it retains the L/C setting.
CALP mode works fine bypassing the ATU, and this is what I normally use. In

activate/deactivate the KAT2 depending whether I am using the KXPA100 or not.

The frequency display alignment is easy enough to do, there is good information
about this on the webpage of Don W3FPR:
http://www.w3fpr.com/dial_cal.html

I recommend the N6KR method which is linked on that page -- tune in WWV
either zero-beating against a second AM shortwave receiver, or use spectrogram
to see the frequency of the WWV tones, then use the N6KR method to align the
VCO/BFO. With a bit of care, you can get the dial showing the right frequency
to within 20Hz.

Seems like you may have a bad connection between the RF board and the tuner, or

If you contact Ekecraft support, they can help you isolate the problem and

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] K2 to KXPA100, serial interface?

2015-03-26 Thread Matt VK2RQ
No, but if you change bands on the K2, a quick tap of the dit paddle will
trigger the frequency counter in the KXPA100, and instantly recall the band
pass filter/antenna selection/tuning solution for the new frequency. If you
want the greater degree of integration that you mention below, you need to look
at the KPA100/KAT100.

That said, it may well be possible for Elecraft to implement the sort of
integration you mention between K2 and KXPA100; it would come down to whether
they see it as a worthwhile investment of engineering resources.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Roofing filter question

2015-03-25 Thread Matt VK2RQ
If you have lots of atmospheric noise, you may have too much gain in your
revive chain, and should maybe consider switching off the preamp/switching on
the attenuator.

There is also the NR noise reduction feature which may be useful. However on
CW I find that narrowing the PBT bandwidth cuts out a lot of the band noise. As
someone else stated, a roofing filter is not going to help you with this sort
of problem; a roofing filter is to protect against strong stations on nearby
frequencies so you don't get problems like AGC pumping and undesired mixing
products.

Joshua, Probably not. The ultimate BW of your receiver is set by the DSP

strong signals that could drive it to saturation.

Noise, other than atmospheric and galactic, needs to be attacked at the
source. Like getting rid of your switching wall warts and power supplies.
So long as the atmospheric noise is not saturating the ADC, reducing the DSP
BW is the only really effective way to reduce it's impact, and that's a lot
easier on CW than on SSB. Different roofing filters are not likely to make
much difference at all unless they're more narrow than your DSP setting.

You can use DATA-A to do LSB too. I do this when I set up the KX3 for packet

Re: [Elecraft] Is KAT100/KPA100 compatible with K3 and KX3 ?

No, the KPA100/KAT100 only works with K2. For a solution that works with

Consider also a KXPA100/KXAT100 combo. Not quite as well integrated as the

Re: [Elecraft] Macro programming for KX3

2015-03-10 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I had a quick look at the programmer's reference, and saw some commands:
IC will read the status of the OFS LED
MP can be used to set the VFO OFS menu setting (maybe setting to off and back

SWT can be used to tap the OFS knob, which will toggle the LED

Maybe if you have a play with these commands you'll find out what is possible.

Re: [Elecraft] Back in time question

2015-03-05 Thread Matt VK2RQ
For calibrating the dial frequency, a second AM SW receiver is helpful. Tune it
in to WWV, then tune the K2 into WWV until the tones match exactly (zero
beat), then run the calibration procedures. That will get you close enough
that the K2's DACs become the limiting factor.

Spectrogram (free software on your PC that uses the sound card to display the
audio coming out of your radio) can be helpful with the above if you don't have
a musical ear, and I think it is pretty much essential for the filter
calibration (you can use the default settings provided in the manual to get
more or less in the ballpark, but they are far from ideal).

If you have an external power meter, that can be useful for peaking the band
pass filters. A DL2 dummy load with DMM would also work, or you could even use
the internal power meter (but the resolution is somewhat limited)

Don W3FPR has a web page that is a treasure trove of handy K2 information:

I still recommend that those not familiar with why receivers work and how

Re: [Elecraft] RX SHFT=8.0 I.F. Image (16 kHz) Nulling

2015-02-16 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Ok, I reviewed the procedure -- it's been a long time since I did it.

I think there is an error in the procedure. What you should do is tune the KX3
to the *same* frequency as your signal source. You should be in CW normal mode,
RIT off, and you should verify that the signal source is giving a strong signal
S9 to S9+30dB. If it is not in this range, you should set the preamp/attenuator
settings to bring it in range.

*Now* you tune the KX3 VFO up 16 kHz, and set the RIT to -1.1. The signal you
now hear should be the image, which you should try to null out.

Sorry for the confusion before, I should have reviewed the procedure before
commenting.

amount of shift between your signal source and the KX3's LO, and you should
also be able to see the image. This graphical representation will help you to
see what is going on at a glance.

Re: [Elecraft] SWR

2015-02-11 Thread Matt VK2RQ
The issue with running with an SWR of 2:1 is that many modern radios have fold
back protection circuitry that will introduce non-linearity under such
conditions and produce IMD products. For this reason it is usually better to
avoid running into such mismatched loads.

Here is an example of a toggling setup (it’s for KX3, but the same principle

I was tempted to reply when first posted but decided it wasn't worth
bothering since it was obviously from someone who totally did not understand.
But now it has been repeated, so you asked for this (and I am replying
 politely):

If you stand next to a horn being played, does it make a sound?...if you are
a thousand miles away from the horn does it still make a sound? Yes to both
questions. But can you hear the sound when you are a thousand miles away?
 Not by ear.

Is CW audible in a radio receiver tuned to receive it? Yes - If the signal
is strong enough. If you cannot hear the CW signal can you copy the CW
 message...nope.

JT-65 can be heard by a receiver set up in CW or SSB and properly tuned...if
the signal is strong enough. If the signal is not strong enough to be heard,
the JT65 signal can still be decoded (quite easily) though you will hear
nothing in the receiver. This is at a signal level from about -20 to -28 dB
SNR as received with a 2.5-KHz bw SSB receiver.

To state this a little differently, JT-65 can be decoded down to about 8-dB
below the signal level that CW is not longer audible. JT-65 and CW are
equally audible if the same signal strength.

 73, Ed - KL7UW
PS: if you do not like computers why are you using one to post e-mail? If
you prefer CW, then by all means use CW. JT-65 is simply an alternative mode
which works better with extremely weak signals. Human intervention is
required for either mode. To say JT-65 use is not human-to human is
 insulting the user.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2

2015-01-04 Thread Matt VK2RQ
So Don, that seems to imply that if you want to do CAT control of the K2 with
an external EC2 enclosure, you need to make up a special cable that plugs in to
the basic K2 K2IO connector and breaks out the computer control lines to one
DB9 serial port connector, and runs the rest of the lines to the EC2 enclosure.
Am I understanding this correctly?

Also, if a KPA100 was installed in the EC2 enclosure, it is possible to switch
the lid of the EC2 over to the K2/10 in order to get a K2/100? Of course, this
would mean leaving the KAT100 behind in the EC2 enclosure. Maybe the KAT100
could be put in a EC1 enclosure, so the home config is K2/10 + KPA100 in EC2 +
KAT100 in EC1, and the portable QRO config is K2/100 + optional KAT100 in EC1.

On 4 Jan 2015, at 7:59 am, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote:

 Brian,

The web pages have gone away, but the instructions are quite easy.
First, you need the KIO2 installed in the base K2.

Build the KAT100-2, just follow instructions - build the cable for the KAT100
as instructed in the manual. Test and align it with the K2/10 at 10 watts -
the RF output from the K2 will be from ANT1 if you have the KAT2 installed.

Then build the KPA100. Do the alignment, test and calibration with it
connected as normal to the base K2.

Then install the KPA100 in the EC2 enclosure. It plugs right into the
KAT100-2 You will have to remove pin 4 from the ribbon cable connector.

Connect a BNC to BNC cable between the base K2 ANT1 connector, a short UHF to
UHF cable between the KPA100 ANT jack to the KAT100 RF IN jack. The control
cable connector with the two cables plugs into the KIO2 and the other male
connector plugs into either the KAT100 or the KPA100 DB-9 connector.

The K2 senses the presence of both the KPA100 and the KAT2 and automatically
forces the KAT2 to bypass and ANT1. Operation is automatic and seamless.
To use the K2/10 for portable operation, remove the BNC cable from ANT1 and
remove the control cable - the K2 will then revert to the 10 watt transceiver
 with the KAT2 active.

Normally in the external KAT100-2/KPA100 combination, the power for the
KAT100 comes through the KPA100 APP power cable. If you want to set it up so
the K2 will revert to low power automatically if the AC powered large power
supply goes down in an AC power failure, you must power *both* the base K2
and the KAT100 from a battery backed supply. The switch to low power will
then be automatic if the large power source goes down.

Even though the KPA100 duplicates the AUX IO port of the KIO2, the computer
connection part of that connector will not be functional when mounted in the
EC2 enclosure. Computer communications must be from the KIO2.

Every time I switch between CW and SSB mode I do have the idee I receive a
 lot more on SSB
I always receive the impression that the bandwidth on CW is to small for

When I switch to SSB and tune to the same received signal,it sounds more
 comfortable on my ears
Before giving remarks around,I must told and I can confirm that all my

I have always the impression there is something wrong on CW mode and
 specially around receiving CW signals.
I now that the bandwidth of the filters for CW are smaller than those for SSB
 use ?
It always could be possible that I have not any confidance with those manner
 of receiving signals.
But I do play CW more than 35 years now hi..
But I must say,I like more the CW receiving signals on a old FT1000D than on
 my K2 ?
I do hear a lot of more signals in SSB mode, also from nabers behind and
 around the band.
Also tune-in exactly on a CW signal is more easyer in SSB than in CW mode due
 the fact of bandwidth !!.
In CW I loose very quick the CW signal by tuning on the VFO dial !!
The CW signal dissepears quickly by turning around, this is somethimes
difficult by very small signal strengths.
In SSB I do have not this matter,I found every signal very quickly back even
when spotted on a wrong DX cluster frequency hi hi (what happens somethimes
by use of a DX cluster)
I easy loose somethimes a CW station and it is difficult to find it again but
turning around even with the dial is his smallest tuning range.
I am quit sure there is nothing around about failures or so,on my homebuild
K2 kit but I found this sometimes reason to some confusion by listening the
 CW small signals
I am curious of some K2 users have the same impressions ?
And of couse I am not God but it could always be possible that I have do
something wrong in the allignement of the filters or so.
This last depense on,how I have understood the allignement procedure
 correctly !!!
Behind this story I stay a big Elecraft fan nothing about that,it stays for
my a fabulous and well engineered radio and building kit !!

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100?

2014-12-18 Thread Matt VK2RQ
First I would say though that one of the big reasons to get a K2 is the
fun/experiences of building it yourself. If you are farming that out to someone
else, then I would be thinking carefully if K2 is the right option, or whether
a more modern design radio might fit the bill better (like KX3, K3, or even,
dare I say it here, a brand Y/I/K radio)

Assuming you go with a K2, then if you want to take the K2 portable QRP, you
need to think about whether you want to install the KPA100 in the same chassis
as the K2, or whether you want to put it in a separate enclosure, or maybe even
consider a separate amplifier like the KXPA100. Below are some pros/cons of the
different options.

KPA100 in same enclosure as K2:
+ one easy convenient fully integrated package
+ if you want to run the radio as QRP, just power it using the coaxial power
connector, and the KPA100 is bypassed
- have to lug the heavy KPA100 with you when you go portable
- if you want an ATU, it will need to be separate
- can’t put the 20W QRP ATU in the K2 enclosure (need to swap lids, which is a
hassle), battery option, etc. (actually, I would prefer to run the K2 off
external LiFePO4 batteries rather than put an SLA inside)

KPA100 in separate enclosure as K2:
+ full integration between K2 and amplifier
+ can leave the KPA100 behind when you go QRP
+ can put a 100W ATU in the same enclosure as the KPA100
+ can also equip K2 with 20W ATU, battery, etc. ready for portable operation
- takes more desk space
- if you want to go QRO portable, you need to take two enclosures
- can’t use the KPA100 with any other radios besides K2

K2 with separate KXPA100 amplifier:
+ can leave amplifier behind when going QRP portable
+ can equip K2 with 20W ATU, battery, etc.
+ flexibility to use the amplifier with other radios, like KX3, FT817, etc.
+ can put 100W ATU in same enclosure as KXPA100
- integration with K2 not quite as good as KPA100/KAT100
- may need to build extra keying circuit
- takes desk space/need to take two boxes for QRO portable

Other people on the list may have further comments based on their experiences
(I myself ended up going for the third KXPA100 option, mainly because I had a
KX3 already).

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 More on Sideband Nulling Issue

2014-12-17 Thread Matt VK2RQ
It looks like your KXFL3 roofing filter may either not be seated correctly, or

 I don't understand.

I have very carefully set all parameters according to the procedure, so I'm
quite sure RIT, normal CW, dual receive is off, etc are set properly. The
automatic null operation works fine for FL1 (I can hear and see the null
being found), but does not null at all for FL2 or FL3. There is no change
in test signal level for FL2 and FL3 when the automatic null procedure (or
manual for that matter) is running. Screen ends up with Gain 00. Anomaly
 exists on all bands.

In actual operation, the filters seem to work properly, and the display
indications for width and filter selection are as they should be. The
problem is that there is no opposite sideband suppression at all when FL2 or
FL3 are selected. That's also what I am seeing during the automatic null
procedure, when no change is observed in the signal level as the null
operation progresses. There is good suppression when FL1 is selected.

 This KX3 is factory-built, S/N 0162, latest firmware.

 Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] HI Current

2014-12-15 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Is that 12.1V reading during receive or transmit (the voltage will tend to sag
when pulling higher currents during transmit)? I don't have a K3, but I do have
a KXPA100, and I find that it will not develop a full 100W if I only feed it
only 12V -- it works much better with a supply of 14V.

The impedance of the antenna will vary from band to band -- if the impedance
happens to work out lower on 20m than on the other bands, then the extra
current draw on that band together with the supply voltage at the low end of
the range may be enough to trip the high current alarm in your PA.

The way Elecraft transceivers control power, a low voltage means that higher
current must be obtained to maintain the requested power output level.

Common causes are loose connections at the power supply, improperly
assembled Anderson PowerPole connectors, and either long power supply cables
or too small a wire gauge resulting in significant voltage drop when current
 is drawn.

This applies not only to the K3, but also to the KXPA100 and the K2/100.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 IQ output question

2014-12-13 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Check out the block diagram:
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3%20Manual%20Block%20Diagram.pdf

You can see the RX I/Q output comes after the preamp, and so will be affected
by the preamp setting.

I have to say, if the band noise is so high as to make everything green on the
screen, does it make sense to run the preamp? If your S-meter is moving with
the preamp off, then you already have plenty of sensitivity for the conditions,
and turning the preamp on becomes a little counter-productive.

So, do I have some setting that needs adjusting (aside from turning off the

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Intermittent VSWR Issues

2014-12-08 Thread Matt VK2RQ
It's not just that, a varying signal can also cause the amp's internal
frequency counter to misread your current frequency. If the amp thinks you
moved frequency, it can tickle the ATU. The frequency counter inertia
adjustment in the latest firmware addresses this issue very effectively, and my
amp/ATU has been a rock-solid performer since loading that latest KXPA100
firmware release.

The tuners store this information in frequency buckets and when they detect
the frequency within that bucker they recall the L-C values and if they need

Train the tuner so that it can remember the L-C values to use for a specific

Re: [Elecraft] New PSK set up - no joy

2014-12-08 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I do a bit of digital modes on the KX3, and it was a bit of a pain swapping
between SSB/CW and the PC, until I set it up with an audio switch (for TX),
mixer (for RX) and wrote some a couple of macros to toggle the menu settings
between the different modes. For the K3, it would be simpler, since you get
separate line in/line out connections.

Having said that, a lot of the time for general rag chewing I'll just jump over
to the K2, which is all set up with paddle/microphone ready to go :-) So I
understand your position.

some really good information and a few insults. I did not become part of the

The biggest problem I had was going from digital back to SSB. I always had to
keep a list of the menu changes needed. Generally, I operate 95% SSB and the
rest on digital or CW. Hence, it was not worth my time to switch back and
 forth. It was too complicated.

Instead, I now run the Signalink USB with my TS-480. Set the Signalink up for
the 480 and got the wire to plug it into the 480. Then I made a couple of
quick settings on the Signalink and all is good. Now when I want to do
digital - I turn the 480 on, turn the Signalink on, set mode to USB and
select the frequency - no other changes to anything. Power output is
controlled by drive from the Signalink (I just know someone is going to ask).
When I want to change back to voice - I pick up the mic and talk - no changes
 to anything.

Now I can leave the K3 alone and not disturb all my menu settings that
optimize my SSB operation. Probably not the answer anyone is looking for -
but, it sure works for me.

2014-12-07 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I had a similar issue earlier in the year, and there was a firmware fix for it,
so I suggest you upgrade your KXPA100 to the latest firmware.

I also encountered this problem on 15 meters when operating from W1AW/8 in

 Any thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] Jumpers for the K2 mic?

The “missing” PCB header is supplied with the KSB2 SSB option module. If you
order a MH2 microphone, you’ll get a packet of PC-style jumpers to bridge the
header. Otherwise, if you use a different type of microphone, you need to take
care for the jumping yourself. The “UNPCB” guy sells a nice jumpering PCB that
allows you to easily change the jumper setup for a range of standard mics,
suggest you look it up below (look for “Internal Mic Adaptor”):

When you place your order, mention in the comments section that you want a
headphone jack or two (email parts at elecraft dot com to get the part

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AND DIGITAL INTERFACE QUESTION

2014-12-05 Thread Matt VK2RQ
1) yes you can run SDR in one windows and a digimode program like FLdigi for
your KX3 in another.

2) pretty much any USB soundcard/dongle will work for basic digimodes. However,
if you want to get something that can also be used for SDR (eg. Using the KX3
I/Q SDR output), then you'll need a stereo soundcard with a reasonable sample
rate. Something like this will work well:

 1) Since the computer can open several windows at at time, can I look at

Re: [Elecraft] K2/k3 question

Unfortunately the K2 KPA100/KAT100 will only work with the K2. For the K3

as KXPA100/KXAT100 that can be used with both K2and K3 (albeit not as fully

Well, I use iambic keying (mode B, because I learned to use a paddle on an ICOM
radio, which would only do mode B. Anyway, this was before I even knew there
was such a thing as mode A and mode B).

The following article questions the value of iambic keying, makes for an
interesting read:
http://www.morsex.com/pubs/iambicmyth.pdf

For the speeds I typically plod along at, around the 20wpm mark, the iambic
keying works quite well, and feels nice.

The correct way to use a twin paddle iambic keyer is to press on paddle
first, fo9llowed by a squeeze action to hold both paddles on, but depending
on what character you're trying to send.

For example. CQ (for a right handed keyer) would use the following sequence:
Press right paddle and immediately squeeze both paddles without letting go
the right paddle. Hold that squeeze until the first -.-. is sent, then let
go for the inter-character space. To send the 'Q' press the right paddle and
wait until the start of the second dash, then squeeze both paddles and
immediately let go of the left hand paddle whilst continuing to briefly hold
the right hand paddle until you're sure the entire --.- sequence has been
sent, then let go the right paddle.ready to send whatever you want to come
 next.

I know this sounds long winded, but once you get used to it, it's very
intuitive and very fast and accurate, as long as you practice it. Once you
get proficient in that mode, you don't even think about it any more.

every transmission, whether or not it resulted in a QSO.

A number of years ago, we had a little survey on this list. A total of 137
responded, about 22% south paws. A little more than 50% of those learned to
send/paddle right. 0% of the north paws sent/paddled left. From this and
answers to some of the other questions in the survey, it appears that most
right-handers are *really* right-handed [some even said so]. Left-handers
seem to be somewhat more flexible, maybe because we live in a right-handed
 world.

I currently have a second paddle set up left on the WinKey-USB to the left of
the laptop which I've started using left-handed in casual QSO's since it's
more natural for me and I no longer have to write in my logbook. I still
contest with the paddle on the right since I can type faster with my left

I'm not hearing all the poor CW others are talking about. In CQ WW CW, I
made a note of two: one had the weight set very high and his dots resembled
his dashes. Theotheroneforgottherearespacesbetweenwords. Quite a few of the

Re: [Elecraft] KX3-2m CW problem

2014-11-22 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Very interesting -- I hooked the KX3 up to a scope, set it at 30wpm on 2m with
VOX OFF, and sent a continual stream of dits. This is what I saw:
http://www.vk2rq.ampr.org//images/IMG_0271.jpg

The dits are in fact quite uneven (some nearly twice as long as others), and if
you listen to a continuous stream of dits it is indeed obvious to the ear. Also
as you say, this problem does not occur on the other bands.

It seems there may be some sort of timing issue in the firmware; I guess this
will get added somewhere on the to-do list.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - SWR Display of --

2014-11-21 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Above 10W of power, the KX3 will disable the internal KXAT3 ATU and rely on the
amplifier to supply the SWR readings over the ACC1 cable. However, the SWR
bridge for the amplifier is part of the KXAT100 ATU option for the amplifier,
so if this option is not equipped, the amplifier will not be able to supply any
SWR readings. I'm guessing this is the reason you are seeing the '--' dashes
for SWR when operating above 10W. If the behaviour is intermittent, it may
indicate a problem with your ACC1 cable connection.

I do not have the internal tuner option. I am using my SGC237 autocoupler
into a center fed Zepp. My W2 wattmeter shows the proper power output and
the SWR is usually 1:1 or very close.

This does not occur at power levels at or below 10 watts which means it's
most likely not the KX3's problem but rather the amplifier's behavior.

Happens on different bands and frequencies. If this is documented somewhere
 then I've missed it.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - SWR Display of --

2014-11-21 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Thanks Dick, that's good to know. It makes sense to include an SWR bridge in
the basic amplifier, because then you can provide protection against antenna
faults and other high SWR conditions.

The KX3 currently doesn't display the KXPA100's SWR, it instead displays the
 KX3 SWR measurement.

When the KXPA100 is PA Bypassed (under about 10 watts), the KX3 SWR bridge
sees the antenna impedance, so the SWR display is appropriate. However when
the KXPA100 is not bypassed, the KX3 SWR display is of the input of the
 KXPA100.

Wayne has on his KX3 firmware todo list a task to display KXPA100 SWR on
 the KX3 display when appropriate.

The KX3 displays dashes when its power is too low for an accurate SWR
 measurement.

The KXPA100's view of the antenna system SWR can be displayed with the
KXPA100 Utility Operate Page, LEDs on an KXAT100-equipped KXPA100, or an
external SWR meter like our W2.

Above 10W of power, the KX3 will disable the internal KXAT3 ATU and rely on
the amplifier to supply the SWR readings over the ACC1 cable. However, the
SWR bridge for the amplifier is part of the KXAT100 ATU option for the
amplifier, so if this option is not equipped, the amplifier will not be able
to supply any SWR readings. I'm guessing this is the reason you are seeing
the '--' dashes for SWR when operating above 10W. If the behaviour is
intermittent, it may indicate a problem with your ACC1 cable connection.

the SWR is usually 1:1 or very close.

This does not occur at power levels at or below 10 watts which means it's
most likely not the KX3's problem but rather the amplifier's behavior.

Just tried 2m CW using a begali paddle plugged in to the KX3 internal keyer,

Re: [Elecraft] K2 -- is this normal?

2014-11-20 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Sound strange. Do you have the SSB module installed, and have set FL1 to OP1?
In that case, when you switch from FL1 to FL2, you are changing from the
crystal filter on the SSB module to the crystal filter on the main RF board.
Maybe if there is a problem (eg bad solder joint, component in wrong place) on
the SSB module, then maybe this is why you observe a difference in the volume?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Audio going low when tuning towards a strong station

2014-11-19 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Have you got VFO NR enabled? Not sure, but maybe this is causing the effect you
are observing.

If you turn VFO NR off, and get tuning noise, then take a look at this
application note:
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KX3%20Tuning%20Noise%20Mod%20rev%20B3.pdf

If you have the latest firmware, then enabling RX SHFT=8kHz no longer prevents
you from using Dual Watch feature, although it will prevent use of the roofing
filter. As you get experience with the radio you'll work out the optimum
settings under various conditions.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Voice Monitor

2014-11-19 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Besides bone conduction, another source of delay may be the DSP processing
inside the KX3 itself. This can wreak havoc with your CW side tone for example
if you add an aftermarket audio DSP to a radio. Elecraft have obviously taken
steps to make sure that the KX3 doesn't have an issue with CW sidetone, but in
the case of voice where they are doing audio equalisation for example, they may
be using some long FIR filters that introduce a bit of delay. Can't say I've
really noticed, because I rarely use the KX3 on fone, and never with monitor on
fone.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 CW Sidetone Pitch

2014-11-17 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Hi Phil,

The following article is a good introduction to demodulating SSB in DSP:
https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/98qex003.pdf

It has a bit of maths without going too overboard, and gives you the flavour of
how it works. But simplifying as much as possible:
- based on the sidetone setting eg. at 700Hz, the DSP will produce a sine wave
audio output at 700Hz and add it to the output audio of the radio demodulator.
- the frequency of local oscillator in the KX3 is set to the frequency of the
signal of interest plus 700Hz, and put through a quadrature mixer. This brings
the signal down to a baseband at 700Hz.
- the I and Q output of the mixer is sampled by an A-D converter, and the maths
mentioned in the article linked above is used to remove the opposite sideband
image, and you are left wi the desired signal at 700Hz. When mixed with the
700Hz sidetone, you hear a single tone.
- if you tune the VFO a bit, it moves the local oscillator, and the demodulate
signal is no longer exactly at 700Hz. You will hear the resulting signal beat
against the 700Hz generated sidetone.
- when you transmit, it will be based on the sidetone frequency, eg. 700Hz. If
you have zero-beating in the receiver, then you know the output of the
transmitter will exactly match the received signal frequency.

If we select CW-R, then we put the LO 700Hz below the signal of interest. If we
select other features like IF SHFT=8kHz, dual watch, etc. then the maths gets a
bit more complicated, but essentially amounts to implementing a second mixer
stage in DSP software.

The demodulated audio (from the signal you are listening to) does vary with
 the VFO setting.
So yes, the selected sidetone pitch tells the DSP not only what spot pitch
to send, it also is used to figure out how much frequency offset to use on
the signal received as a result of the VFO setting.

I can't give you the DSP math to produce that, but Lyle certainly could. I
suspect the demodulated signal tones and the sidetone are simply added -
that is at least the result in the analog world. I do know the BFO/signal
relationship is a mixer process and if I recall that in DSP math is some
sort of multiplication process - as you can tell, I am not well steeped in
DSP techniques, but I do recall a bit of signal processing math from my

adjust the VFO until the pitch of the CW signal closely matches my sidetone

I could push the spot button too and I usually do that).

If this is true, then the sidetone generation itself is a function of the

it is, say, 600 Hz away for example in a BFO kind of way.

I use the KXPA100+KXAT100 built in tuner with my K2, and it works great. Of
course, the integration isn't quite as tight as it is with the KPA100+KAT100.
For example, when I change bands, I need to hit the dit paddle to give the
amp/tuner a squirt of RF and let it know my new QRG. But the tuner immediately
selects the right antenna and recalls the last tuning solution for that band
segment. I also set the power knob to 3W when doing a tuning cycle, and then
maybe crank it up to 5W if I want a full 100W out of the amp.

In order to make the amp work the the K2, you need a key out line. The basic K2
doesn't have this, but it is easy to add one. Here is what I did, based on an
article from the Elecraft website:

The benefit of using KXPA100 solution is that I can leave it at home if I want

solution. The KXPA100 is completely silent, with no fans, and relays only used
for antenna selection/tuning/protection, whereas I understand the KPA100 has
some noisy fans when it warms up.

Whichever way you go, the K2 is a lot of fun :-)

One other thing I forgot to mention, with KPA100, you get a KIO2 RS232 CAT
interface for free. I had to pay extra to add one into my QRP K2. Of course
if you are swapping the top of your K2 to change between QRP and QRO modes,
then you might want a KIO2 for the QRP lid anyway. Of course, you can run a K2
fitted with a KPA100 in QRP mode by powering it off the coaxial power
connected instead of the Anderson power pole input, but then you won't have a
KAT2 ATU, and will need something external.

Anyway, you can see we are spoiled for choices :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Problems with a 2m module on my KX3

2014-11-07 Thread Matt VK2RQ
The description below is a little vague, so hard to really comment.

- birdies: do you observe these with no antenna connected to the 2m SMA socket?
On which frequencies? Is it consistent?

- instabilities: what exactly do you observe when you encounter one of these
instabilities?

- microphone effects: I guess you probably don't mean microphonics. Maybe you
mean some sort of RF pick by the microphone? Do you observe microphone
effects when transmitting into a dummy load?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 receiver sensitivity on 12 and 10 Meters

2014-11-06 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Here are some other ideas:

I wonder if switching off the AGC makes much difference? If so, maybe it is
kicking in too early, and you may need to look at setting the threshold (I
think there are procedures in the K2 manual for this).

You said peaking the band pass filter didn't help much (I guess you did this in
the right order, as described in the manual?) What about the IF filter L34
adjustment? That could affect overall gain. Although not really related to
sensitivity, while you are running alignment procedures, may as well go the
whole way and check the setup of the crystal filter with spectrogram.

It may be interesting to measure the sensitivity to see if there may be a
problem. The following webpage may be a useful reference:
http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/k2_rx_sensitivity.htm

When I built my K2, I used the measurement procedure in the XG3 signal
generator manual to measure the sensitivity as a sanity check to see if I'd
built it properly. The result came out somewhere in the ballpark of the figure
published in Rob Sherwood's receiver performance list.
http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

There is an application note on the Elecraft website dealing with increasing
the K2 sensitivity, although as the article mentions, there are trade offs:
http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/RX_Gain_application_note.htm

I would suggest you try re-peaking the K2 bandpass filters using
Transmit. Set the power to 2 watts and adjust the 10 meter inductors
for maximum output (L12 and L13) using TUNE, then switch to 12 meters
and adjust C44 and C46 for maximum output. That should produce the best
setting for both transmit and receive.

If connecting the antenna when tuned to those bands results in an
increase in noise in the receiver, you have all the sensitivity you can
use. You should be using real signals (but weak ones) to compare
receiver sensitivity - if you are comparing on the basis of the
'loudness' of the noise heard, that can create a false impression. What
is important is the signal that stands above the atmospheric noise.

If you are hearing a reasonable increase in atmospheric static noise when
connecting an antenna on 12/10m, then any further increase in sensitivity is
wasted and not making efficient use of the receiver's available dynamic range.

2014-11-04 Thread Matt VK2RQ
To understand what sideband the radio is on in CW mode, listen to the radio's
speaker and tune up the band. If the signals you hear go UP in pitch as you
tune UP the band, it is using LSB. If the pitch of the signals goes DOWN as you
tune UP the band, the radio is using USB. Once you understand whether the radio
is set to use LSB or USB for a particular band, you can then set your digital

Since it is running via a serial port, is it possible that the software is

[Elecraft] [KX3] RX I/Q signals reversed on 2m

2014-11-03 Thread Matt VK2RQ
That's interesting, the RX I/Q signal lines appear to be reversed when
operating the KX3 on 2m.

I guess this makes sense, if you consider the 2m module is using the x4
output of the KX3's local oscillator, so that if you tune to 144MHz for
example, the LO would be running at 48MHz, so that in the 2m module the 144Mhz
signal would be mixed with a 4x48=192MHz signal. This would place the USB
image at 192+144=336MHz, which is discarded, and then place the LSB image
(192-144) at 48MHz, which is then downshifted to 0MHz by the 48MHz LO in the
main receiver. Because the LSB image is the one that is used, the frequencies
appear reversed when you look at then on the I/Q output. By swapping the I
Q signals, you can effectively reverse the frequencies a second time, and get
a normal display on the waterfall. Of course, this is taken care of
automatically in the PX3 :-)

Re: [Elecraft] A new Elecraft product?

2014-10-16 Thread Matt VK2RQ
With this recent discussion around frequency references, some on this reflector
may be interested in this GPS-locked agile frequency reference module that will
cost you less than $30 delivered:
https://sites.google.com/site/g4zfqradio/u-blox_neo-6-7

The output is programable from 1Hz up to 10MHz. You can't use it directly to
drove the 10MHz reference input of the K3; if the selected output frequency
doesn't divide evenly into 48MHz, then you will get some short-term jitter in
the output that you would need to clean up with some sort of TXCO PLL type of
arrangement. But it is great for calibrating your frequency counter (the long
gating time averages out any short term jitter), and the output is rock-steady
and accurate source to zero-beat your radio against if you select an output
like eg. 1, 3, 4, 6 or 8MHz. Output is a square wave, so harmonics could also
be used.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Repeat extended VFO temp. comp. proc.

2014-10-10 Thread Matt VK2RQ
If you just mucked up refcal right at the end, no need to redo the whole
procedure, you just need to set the refcal so that the dial frequency lines up
when you tune to a known frequency. I wouldn't recommend to use XG50 -- it is a
stable source, but you only know the output frequency approximately. I think
you are better off tuning to WWV on SSB on the KX3 and zero-beating against a
second receiver tuned to WWV on AM, or maybe use spectrogram on your PC to tune
the WWV tones if you don't have a musical ear.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and installing KSB2 160m

2014-10-09 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I just installed the KSB2 module by the book, and it worked no problem. One
thing you may want to consider is the UNPCB microphone adapter kit, which lets
you easily re-jumper the microphone socket on the K2 to make it compatible with
different types of microphones without having to break down the whole radio. I
didn't see a need for this flexibility in my particular case, so I didn't
bother with that option, but if you may conceivably use the K2 with different
microphones, it would be a nice feature.

If you don't get the mic adapter, and you use the Elecraft MH2 microphone, you
can just jumper the standard headers directly across with the jumpers provided
in the kit. If you want to use a different microphone, then there is a nice
hack where you use a computer connector to make a jumpering block that lets you
make connections without wire wrapping or damaging the microphone jumpering PCB
headers on the control board.

I have ordered the KSB2 SSB option as well as the 160m band/aux receive

If anyone remembers putting these options in, were there any lessons learned

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and installing KSB2 160m

2014-10-09 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Don's probably right -- I ordered the MH2 microphone together with the KSB2
kit, and I think the jumpers were indeed packaged with the microphone.

You can use the two-pin computer jumpers if you are just doing a direct 1:1
jumpering of the configuration header. If you are using a different type of
microphone, here is the computer connector hack I was thinking of:

An added note - the jumpers that Matt is referring to are supplied with the

You can use the 2 pin female 'computer' jumpers for mic configuration header
connections that connect straight across the header.

 Examples:
-- for the Elecraft microphones, connect all pins straight across and solder
the 5.6k resistor between pins 1 and 6 on the back of the microphone jack.
-- for Kenwood dynamic microphones put jumpers straight across all pins
except for mic pins 5 and 6 ( no resistor for dynamic mics)
-- for other microphones, refer to the KSB2 instructions.
-- If you have a Heil microphone (not the Elecraft variety) it will have an
adapter - wire the mic configuration header to correspond with the adapter
 used (Kenwood, Yaesu, or Icom).

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Build #7552

2014-09-28 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Te kit should fit together without needing to use longer screws, etc.. If it
doesn't, then it indicates you may have done something wrong.

Are the PCB headers sitting properly flush wi the board, or are they sticking
up a bit, possibly causing misalignment? Are you sure you used the right size
standoffs? If you used ones that are too short, then this could put stress on
the board when you tighten the screws.

If all the connectors and securing hardware is correctly installed, then
erratic behaviour could be an indication of further dry joints. It is worth to
inspect all the joints with a magnifying glass and a strong light, although
poor joints are not always obvious to the eye.

Many thanks to Don and others who responded.
The problem has been fixed, I found a suspect dry joint on the PTT/ATT switch.
I also checked the new encoder which appeared ok but I did insert a very thin
piece of insulation between the new encoder and the control board to make
 sure.

All tests now appear ok UNTIL I re-insert and tighten the two holding screws
in the Control Board. When these are tightened, the control board is pulled
about 1/8th inch toward front panel, probably stressing both boards, causing
the display to be erratic (ELICRAFT instead of ELECRAFT for example), and
erratic other test results. Stressing the boards may be causing movement in
 sockets where they are used.

Does it matter if I leave those two screws out?
Another option would be to put in longer screws and not tighten them so much,
or perhaps a better suggestion maybe to increase the spacer length
marginally, so that there is no stressing.

[Elecraft] Using dual watch with RX SHFT=8kHz

2014-09-24 Thread Matt VK2RQ
A long long time ago on another mail list there was a discussion about why it
was not possible to use dual watch together with the RX SHFT set to an 8kHz
shift. If this would be implemented in a straightforward way, such a shift
would result in an asymmetry in range of frequencies your second VFO could
cover above and below the first VFO (eg. ADC covers LO+/-15kHz, VFO_A is
LO+8kHz, so VFO_B can range from VFO_A-23kHz to VFO_A+7kHz.

However, if you tried to set VFO_B to greater than VFO_A+7kHz, one possibility
would be for the KX3 to change the shift from LO+8KHz to LO-8kHz. This would
then permit coverage from VFO_A-7khz to VFO_A+23kHz. Everything would seem to
be on the opposite sideband, so the demodulation code would need to compensate.

By combining these two modes of operation, the dual watch could be extended so
VFO_B has a ranges of VFO_A +/-23kHz. If you used a greater IF shift than 8kHz,
say 11kHz for example, then this could extend the range even further, say
+/-26kHz.

Regardless whether such such extended coverage is implemented for dual watch,
the PX3 would need to behave sensibly when using of dual watch with IF shift.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Encoder Upgrade

2014-09-21 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I don't think so -- you get an allen key with the KX3 itself (both factory and
kit versions), as this is needed to adjust the drag on the tuning knob. If you
have lost your key, when you order the encoder upgrade, in the comments field
ask them to add an allen key to your order (mail parts at electraft.com to get
the part number).

Re: [Elecraft] [Bulk] Re: K2 Straight key auto detect

2014-09-19 Thread Matt VK2RQ
For my K2, I made a short adapter cable, 3.5mm female to 3.5mm stereo male, and
I soldered a couple of diodes inside the one of the 3.5mm connectors to bring
both tip and sleeve of the male connector to ground when the tip of the female
connector is grounded by a straight key. This goes into one of the female
sockets on a 2x3.5mm female stereo to 1x3.5mm male stereo Y-adapter cable that
is designed so one iPod can be shared with two sets of ear plugs. My paddle
goes into the other female socket on the Y-cable, and the Y-cable goes into my
K2.

I can then easily move between paddle and straight key, and the K2 will auto
detect. In addition, the Y-cable means I don't have to fumble around at the
back of the radio if I want to swap over some different keying devices.

I might have mentioned this before, but the K2 is a great radio :-)

I believe the information on what comes with the basic K3 can be deciphered
from the description on the Elecraft website and looking at the list of
options. If it is listed as an option, it is not included with the basic K3.
There is one roofing filter, and that is the 5 pole 2.7 kHz filter.
The basic K3 is an all mode, 160 through 6 meter transceiver delivering 12
 watts power output.

What you need/want for options is going to depend on your operating
preferences and desires. Let me try to help you with your choice of options:

-- Do you want to use it for SWL as well as ham band use? Then the KBPF3 and
either the 6 kHz or 13 kHz roofing filter would be valuable for that use.
-- Are you going to want FM or AM transmit? A yes answer will require you to
order the 13 kHz roofing filter for FM and while the 13 kHz filter can be
used for AM transmit, if that is your regular operation, I suggest using the
 6 kHz filter for AM.
-- Do you want the 100 watt output level? The KPA3 should be on your order
 list.
What antennas do you have or want to have? If they are all resonant, you
will not need the KAT3, but if you are going to need an antenna tuner, the
internal wide range KAT3 would be desirable.
-- Do you already have a microphone that is wired for either the Kenwood
pinout or the Elecraft? If not, you may want to order the Elecraft MH2/3
 microphone.
-- Is your operating and operating goals for casual operation? Then the
above may provide the K3 option set that you will need.
-- If you will be doing contesting and/or DXing where there are many strong
signals adjacent to the station you want to copy, then you will want more
narrow roofing filters - You may want to study the K3 FAQ on roofing filters
at http://www.elecraft.com/K3/Roofing_Filters.htm before making a decision,
or alternately, use the K3 with the basic 2.7 kHz filter for a time before
deciding the DSP filter widths you tend to use in crowded band conditions and
then order the roofing filters that are closest to those widths.
-- Are you going to be working a lot of DX while using SPLIT? If so, then
you will find the KRX3 subRX to be useful - you can hear the DX in one ear
and the pileup in the other so you can decide when to call and on or near the
last frequency the DX was listening.
-- Do you anticipate working weak signals that are subject to fading? Then
the KRX3 used in diversity mode can assist with the fading.
-- Do you want a pan-adapter display? The Elecraft P3 will give you that,
and with the P3SVGA option, you can display both the spectrum display and the
waterfall on a large SVGA display.
-- Do you want a 600 watt transceiver with an amplifier that follows the K3?
If so, the KPA500 will give you that capability.
-- If you order the KPA500, then the antenna tuner question comes again -- if
your antennas need a tuner, the KAT500 may be the answer for you.

As you can see, many of the answers to your question depend on your operating
practices and desires as well as the other features of your station such as
 antennas.

I hope the above list has been of help to you in deciding on your particular
 K-Line configuration.

-- Do you anticipate working weak signals that are subject to fading? Then
the KRX3 used in diversity mode can assist with the fading.
-- Do you want a pan-adapter display? The Elecraft P3 will give you that,
and with the P3SVGA option, you can display both the spectrum display and
the waterfall on a large SVGA display.
-- Do you want a 600 watt transceiver with an amplifier that follows the K3?
If so, the KPA500 will give you that capability.
-- If you order the KPA500, then the antenna tuner question comes again --
if your antennas need a tuner, the KAT500 may be the answer for you.

As you can see, many of the answers to your question depend on your
operating practices and desires as well as the other features of your
 station such as antennas.

I hope the above list has been of help to you in deciding on your particular
 K-Line configuration.

[Elecraft] [KX3] VHF BNC mod kit recommended with 2m module?

2014-09-11 Thread Matt VK2RQ
For early model KX3, there is a mod kit for the BNC connector which added extra
filtering to reduce weak signal interference on VHF/UHF. Is this mod
recommended if the 2m transverter is installed in the KX3? Will it cause
interference to itself on 2m without the mod?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] VHF BNC mod kit recommended with 2m module?

2014-09-11 Thread Matt VK2RQ
Well, my KX3 is an early model that predates the point at which this mod was
phased into production. I understand that the transverter module uses a
separate SMA jack; my question is, while using the transverter, could there be
leakage out the HF/6m antenna on the BNC jack that may be picked up by the 2m
antenna on the SMA jack? Or is the BNC jack disconnected during transverter
operation in a way that would prevent any such leakage?

[Elecraft] Re: 回覆U K2/10 to K2/100

2014-09-08 Thread Matt VK2RQ
The K2/10 with KXPA100/KXAT100 is a very nice combo. The amp auto-senses the
frequency, and recalls the appropriate antenna and tuning solution for that
frequency. You just need to make up a simple keying circuit, which has been
discussed here before.

 Hello John,

If you don't need an integrated linear with the K2 in one enclosure, I would
 suggest you go for KXPA100.

This linear is not only fitted to the KX3 but also any other radios like K2.
It can be fitted with internal ATU KXAT3 if you wish.

On the other hand, if you don't need 100W power, you could consider the
Hardrock HR50 (50w output with internal ATU as well) at a much lower price.

In fact, there are quite a few good choices.

One of our K2s needs to be converted to a K2/100. Looking over the
instructions I do not see where this is terribly difficult, but I do have a
 couple of questions:

Both K2s are totally maxed out with all the options so there is no reason
to use one over the other. If I add the KPA100 kit, will the 20 watt tuner
still be inside or does that need to be removed? Will it still be
available to use if running less than 20 watts?

When I remove the battery, anyone have any idea how often I should put it
on the charger to maintain the pack? Should the pack be unplugged for
 storage?

This is a SOTA rig for my XYL and I think she will have an easier time with
100 watts and a Buddipole LIPO pack. She is having a difficult time making
 contacts QRP.

[Elecraft] [KX3] Foxhunting with the KX3 2m module

2014-09-02 Thread Matt VK2RQ
I saw the following blog post about someone using the KX3 with 2m transverter
for fox hunting:
http://www.n4kgl.info/2014/09/the-kx3-2-meter-module-is-handy-for-fox.html

This sounds like a great idea, and would work well with the adjustable
attenuator mini module, if you put it in a metal box. Not too sure about the
strain of mounting an antenna directly on the SMA connector though. If the KX3
had a feature where it would output a tone proportional to signal strength,
then this might be a good convincer when deciding on the 2m module.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KSB2 Filter alignment question

2014-09-02 Thread Matt VK2RQ
You did the right thing using spectrogram to align the filters -- the values in
the manual are really only a rough guide for those who don't have access to
more advanced alignment methods such as spectrogram.

Spectrogram and went through N0SS's procedure for setting up the filters.

Most of the adjusted settings were within 2-300Hz of those in the manual
(all on the higher side), but a couple were moved quite a bit. I'm
interested in others' experiences in this area.

The outliers were USB FL2 which needed to be 500Hz higher and USB FL3 which
 needed to be 700Hz higher.

The main issue when looking with Spectrogram was that the USB spectrum was
far too bassy when the BFOs were set as per the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 filter plots

2014-09-02 Thread Matt VK2RQ
You are probably using a cached version of the K3 roofing filter page. In the
current version of that page, the URL to the filter plots is missing the K3
directory in the URL. If you add it in manually, you get:

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_filter_plots.htm

Which does work, but the filter plots are all blank. Again, probably due to
missing elements in the directory path in the URLs to the images.

This is similar to a problem that was reported with the K3 FAQ page -- it would
seem whatever software Elecraft is using to manage their web page is ignoring
the site directory structure when forming links and is pointing them all to the
root document directory.
