Re: [Elecraft] OT: CW Paddle A/B switch
Hi Doug, I am currently using two of the following switches and they work perfectly. They switch 1/8" stereo plugs so if you are currently using 1/4" plugs you would need reducers. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NTKFKMG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8=1 I use my K3 for local operation and with an RRC device for remote operation. I use one switch for my headphones and another for my microphone. I would have a third switch for my paddle, however, I had previously made a toggle switch box for that purpose. 73, Mike K2MK Doug Hensley wrote > I have two radios and one cw paddle. Re: [Elecraft] Selectivity
Hi Roger, Take a look at your RX equalizer settings. If I remember correctly the DSP will not apply positive DB equalizer settings at a bandwidth setting of 100Hz or 50Hz. So if for example your pitch is set to 600Hz and you have a 6db boost dialed in on your equalizer at 600Hz then when you narrow your bandwidth you will experience a drop in audio level of 6db. Again, if I remember correctly, the solution is to only apply negative db settings for your CW RX equalizer. So you might drop all frequencies except 600Hz by 6db. Then when you narrow your bandwidth you won't experience an audio level drop. 73, Mike K2MK Roger D Johnson wrote > I noticed that during the contest, that if I selected 50 or 100 Hz > selectivity, > the audio would drop way down. Re: [Elecraft] K3 users with SteppIR interface
Hi Larry, Don't worry, you're not breaking any new ground. You will need a few items. You'll need a Y cable and an S-13 cable from SteppIR or you can make your own. You may also need a 9 pin extension cable depending on how close together all of your components reside. The SteppIR controller must have the transceiver option. Choose Kenwood in the menu setting. You also have to make a configuration change on your K3. CONFIG:AUTOINF to AUTO 1 If you are a member of the SteppIR Yahoo group you can find PDFs for these cables in the Files section. The Y cable PDF does a good job of illustrating how to use it. If you are not a member it would probably be a good idea to join. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/SteppIR/info You can also e-mail me directly and I can send you the PDFs. k2mk dot mike at gmail dot com 73, Mike K2MK The Wizard wrote > Ok, guys, I will be getting a new 3 element SteppIR soon. Re: [Elecraft] Need advice on Small Tower
Hi Terry, I'm moving and I've just sold my MA40 with the MARB40 tilt over/rotator base. It's a fine tower for small loads. Be careful, it's only rated at 3sqft load when the tower is cranked down to the 21 foot level. I had a 2 element SteppIR yagi on it and I would crank it down if winds over 20 or 30 mph were forecasted. Cranking it up and down is very easy on the arm. It cranks easily but requires 100 cranks. Tilting it over and cranking it down and back up requires much greater effort until the mast is at the 45 degree angle. I would have liked to have a power driven winch for that operation. The foundation for this mast is substantial with lots of rebar. I'm selling my house and just had the top 12" of concrete removed so that I could replace it with grass. It took a crew longer to remove the 12" then it did for the crew to dig and pour the foundation in the first place. I'm thankful I didn't have to any of the work. This mast can actually be handled by one person if you have moderate equipment to help. I had a wheeled lawn cart for rolling it around and a Harbor Freight 1 ton shop crane for taking it off of the flat bed delivery truck and helping to engage and dis-engage the mast into the MRB40 unit. With two people it's a very simple job. All of my experiences were good and given the opportunity I would not hesitate to purchase another one. I have a personal website with lots of photos. Contact me directly if you want the link. k2mk at comcast dot net 73, Mike K2MK Terry Brown wrote > Hello all, > > I am the owner if a K2, KX3, PX3, and KXPA100. Re: [Elecraft] Please recommend an HD monitor to use with P3SVGA
Hi Doug, The problem with recommending a model number is that within a year of purchasing a monitor it is usually superceded by a different model. I do have some suggestions that you might not have considered. Consider getting a monitor that can also serve as a second monitor for your PC. Most monitors today have multiple inputs. A few years ago that would have been SVGA and DVI. Later it became SVGA and HDMI. Now you might also find SVGA, DVI, and HDMI. But that's not the whole story. You want to make sure that you can change the monitor with a push-button at the bottom of the monitor. Some monitors require that you go into the monitor program settings. That would be much less convenient. When I'm using the P3 I'll push the monitor button to go into SVGA. When the P3 is off the monitor automatically switches back to the DVI input thus acting as a secondary monitor output from my PC. Typical 22" monitors can display the 1440 x 900 from the P3 quite nicely. Of my ASUS and ViewSonic low-cost monitors I prefer the ViewSonic. The colors are more realistic. The ASUS adjustments don't seem capable of getting the softer colors I'm interested in. My ViewSonic model number is VA2265smh. The ASUS is model number VS228H-P. With two large monitors on a desk it's also worth considering adjustable monitor support arms. They let you situate the monitors for best viewing heights and angles without taking up valuable desk surface for your equipment. 73, Mike K2MK Doug Hensley wrote > Subject says it all. [Elecraft] FS receive antenna splitter for K3 with Sub RX
Hi, If you have a separate receive only antenna for your K3 or K3S and if you have a Sub RX you might want to split the antenna signal between the AUX RF port and the RX ANT IN port. If you only have your antenna connected to the AUX RF port you will not be able to use it for your Main RX. There are other ways to accomplish this but this is simple and clean. There is a 3db insertion loss with this device on each leg. It is the DX Engineering RSC-2 splitter which you can view at: http://www.dxengineering.com/parts/dxe-rsc-2 If you have technical questions please look at the manual on the DX Engineering website. It works great. It can also be used to combine two separate receive antennas. DX Engineering sells it at the lofty price of $71.95 plus shipping. I am selling it for $40 and I will include priority mail to the the contiguous 48 states. I don't want to sell it internationally. Re: [Elecraft] Receive drops about 6 s-units
Hi Dick, Don't be too quick to blame the amplifier relay. It could be your SteppIR yagi. This is a common SteppIR problem. QSY a bit so that the tuning light on the SteppIR controller turns on and off. Then tune back and forth over that frequency and listen for a drop in signal strength. If it occurs then it is the SteppIR EHU and not your amplifier relay. 73, Mike K2MK rlindzen wrote > I'm having a problem with my K3 (with 2 receivers and a P3). Re: [Elecraft] K3 - N1MM & keyboard
Hi Gary, It sounds like you are not using the CW memories within N1MM. But I assume you are using a serial connection to the K3 so that N1MM can read your frequency for logging purposes. If this is true then you probably need to read up on using the memory functions. With 12 slots available you can pre-program some of the memory functions to handle the typical reach-for-the-paddle actions. Such as RRR or ee or 73. You can also press CTRL K to quickly bring up a free form CW/RTTY window that responds to anything you type on the keyboard. You can also program K3 macros into the message slots that access functions on the K3 such as the M1 through M4 memory keys. I always have one macro set up to call up the K3 Auto Spot function. And of course you can change frequency using the mouse wheel which you may already be doing. There is also incredible functionality with respect to skimmer spots. The only additional issue that will need to be addressed is whether you are satisfied with the response you get between your computer and the K3 when sending messages. Sending CW through the serial cable can sometimes come up jumbled. For this and other reasons many people use an external Winkeyer type device to handle the messages from N1MM over a USB cable and then to directly key the K3 through the KEY input jack (not the paddle jack). N1MM is a complicated, feature-rich program. Sometimes it's necessary to take it slow and learn the features during non-contest periods with the K3 in test mode. There are also tutorial video links available on their website. 73, Mike K2MK Gary Smith-2 wrote > When I contest I use N1MM, use the memories on the K3 and send with > the key when needed & I'm busy as a one arm paper hanger doing it > this way. Re: [Elecraft] VOX / PTT combination on k3
Hi Robert, If you are using VOX there should be no difference in the delay between using your paddle and using your PC. It sounds like N1MM is still sending a PTT command over the serial link. Re: [Elecraft] K3/N1MM, freq jumps etc in CQ WW CW
Hi Ignacy, Is it possible that when you decided to end your transmission you quickly moved your hand to the ESC key and in the process accidentally touched the Tilde key. With N1MM the tilde key turns on the SUB RX. Now in my case this causes me to hear different stations in my right ear. But your K3 or your N1MM configuration may have a different reaction that is causing a frequency change. 73, Mike K2MK Ignacy wrote > Generally K3 worked very well. Re: [Elecraft] Can I pre set Data A mode in a memory
Hi Howard, You definitely can if you use the latest version of the Elecraft Frequency Memory Editor program. It lets you choose the VFO-A mode and sub-mode and of course the frequency for all of the various memory keys. For example on my K3 when I go to a particular band I have the M1 button set for CW, the M2 button set for AFSK, the M3 button for SSB, and the M4 button for Data A. Re: [Elecraft] P3 question: setting current frequency at center of display
Hi Bill & Gus, Toggling between Fixed Tune and Tracking modes also centers the cursor. Toggling twice brings you back to the mode you were first in. I set up the F4 button to accomplish this toggle. So a quick double press of F4 gets me centered. There was a side benefit. I normally leave my P3 in Ref Lvl mode. If I press Center twice it takes me out of Ref Lvl mode. By pressing F4 twice as I described above the P3 stays in Ref Lvl mode. 73, Mike K2MK Augie Gus Hansen wrote > Press CENTER a second time without any intervening action. > > On 11/18/2015 7:29 AM, Bill Conwell wrote: >> Is there a faster way to put the current frequency at the center of the >> display, than pressing CENTER, and twirling the knob? >> >> Thanks, >> /Bill, K2PO -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-question-setting-current-frequency-at-center-of-display-tp7610488p7610493.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Can I?
Hi Mike, This really works best in Fixed Tune mode. Just hold the CENTER button and turn the SELECT knob until the VFO-A green cursor is at the far left. It will stay put as long as you don't move VFO-A on the K3. The VFO-B (magenta) cursor (and the split red cursor) will move as you tune the VFO-B knob on the K3. If you also want to use the A and B markers they will follow the select knob on the P3. 73, Mike K2MK Mike Reublin NF4L wrote > Span is set at 10. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500 occasional high power input
Hi Rich, Do the TX Gain calibration again and then retest into your dummy load on all bands. You don't need to use the amp or tuner since it's a K3 problem that you can see with your power meter. You indicated that the overshoot occurs on the lower bands. If it only occurs on 1 or 2 bands you may need to manually touch up the results from the TX Gain Calibration on the affected bands. If the overshoot is seen on most bands then it is probably a different problem. A method is explained at the top of page 62 of the K3 manual for TXGN{pwr}. Go to the affected band, turn off CONFIG:TX ALC and set the CONFIG:TXGN number for that band to a lower number. Remember to turn CONFIG:TX ALC back on after changing the number. Retest. 73, Mike K2MK gi4doh wrote > With my K3/KPA500/KAT500 combo I occasionally get a soft or hard alarm on > the KPA500 due to the K3 briefly giving a high power burst. > I now have a digital peak power meter between the K3 and KPA500 and I can > see the surges. > The power output from the K3 is steady apart from these brief bursts. Re: [Elecraft] Has anyone Interfaced a K3S and OM2500A
Hi Charles, Not a direct answer to your specific amplifier question but something that might help. In the last 7 years I don't think I have used the BAND up/down button on my K3 more than once or perhaps twice. The numbered keypad is easily set up for each band either directly on the K3 or K3S or by using the K3 Memory Editor program. Changing bands is then a simple two button process. First press the M-V button then press one of the ten numbered key buttons. I have button 1 set for 160 meters, 2 for 80 meters... 0 for 6 meters. In a similar manner you can then set up each of the four M buttons for band segments. For example I have M1 set up for the CW portion of the band, M2 for RTTY, M3 for SSB. Again just press M-V then the M button. And finally, when using a contest or logging program it's very easy to just type in a frequency on your PC and press enter. 73, Mike K2MK charles-2 wrote > Having no success getting my Flex 6500 to interface with my OM2500A > using ddutil and assorted null modems and serial to USB adapters. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Settings Main and Sub Receiver Track For Data Mode Only
Hi Elliott, I tested MCU 5.33 and could not duplicate your problem. I noticed that the latest production release firmware is 5.38. I loaded 5.38 and again tested and still could not duplicate your problem. So maybe the problem was only present with MCU 5.35. Another possibility is that you accidentally put the K3 into Diversity mode. In diversity the Sub RX filters are always the same as the Main RX filters. A quick test is to press BSET and then press XFIL. If the word "=MAIN" appears in the lower display then you are in diversity. 73, Mike K2MK Elliott Lawrence-5 wrote > Using the latest K3 firmware MCU 5.35 for my K3 (not K3S). Hi Jerry, You should also try with APF off. APF on the K3 is useful for pulling out weak signals. I don't see the benefit for general listening. Just as a further clarification. Re: [Elecraft] K3S Config: Sub-Receiver Signal Path without BNC Antenna
Hi Byron, If you have the BNC connector then it seems logical that you choose BNC when setting up the KRX3. From there the solution is quite simple. Just be sure when activating the Sub RX that the word MAIN comes up in the lower display. This tells you that the Sub RX is using the same antenna as your Main RX. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Popping noise in headphones??
Hi Jim, I have an older K3 with new SYN boards. I also have the 500Hz and 200Hz filter. I just tested it on CW and I can hear a very faint pop when turning the bandwidth knob. As you noted, it seems to be present only at the narrow settings. I start to hear it when changing from 350 to 300 and below. It's loudest when changing from 150 to 100. Having said that, it's faint to the point that I can't be sure if it was there before the SYN changeover or not. It certainly doesn't bother me even with high audio levels. 73, Mike K2MK Jim Bolit wrote > I just got my K3 back from Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Vs. 2nd RX
Hi Dave, As you described, having both a Sub RX and a P3 are a great asset for working split operations. One area where the P3 excels is finding a quiet spot to transmit. It's not always as obvious with the Sub RX. With a modest station it may not be beneficial to jump on the exact frequency of the last QSO. A clear frequency can be a better choice. 73, Mike K2MK dyarnes-2 wrote > Hi All, > > I just worked V73D, but not sure how I would have done it without using > the > 2nd RX. Hi David, The SteppIR controller needs to collect serial communication data. This information is available over the RS232 port or a K3 or the USB port of a K3S. The ACC port is not used for this purpose. If you are interested in RS232 communications you'll want to see the SteppIR application notes on their Y cable. Re: [Elecraft] Question on P3 operation
Hi John, I can speak for the small U shaped cursors. My explanation might be incorrect for the tall cursors. Yes, VFO-A is green and VFO-B is magenta. The magenta cursor doesn't change to red. A third cursor, red, appears when you are transmitting on an offset frequency. You will see it when you turn on split or when you turn on XIT or RIT. Normally the red and magenta overlap so you may not see magenta. You will see red and magenta sort of overlapping if you fiddle with your bandwidth. Yes, turning VFO-B will move the magenta and red cursors. If they move off of the screen you will see a magenta and a red arrow (if your transmit frequency is offset) or just a magenta arrow. All of this applies whether you have a SUB RX or not. 73, Mike K2MK a...@juno.com wrote > From the P3 manual" > "VFO A has a green cursor and VFO B has a magenta cursor unless split mode > is activated at the K3. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Problems
Hi Mike, When you transmit from the K3 what do you see on the left side of the KPA500 display. Obviously it's not an asterisk. Are you seeing an Underscore. You may have accidentally programmed INHIB IN to ENABLE? See page 20 of the KPA500 manual. You will want it to be in DISABLE. /ENABLE allows the amplifier operation to be inhibited (won’t amplify) when a logic low is applied to pin 11 of the AUX Connector (see pg 26). When amplification is inhibited, an underscore instead of the asterisk appears on the left end of the LCD display./ 73, Mike K2MK Mike VE3YF wrote > Hi: > > I hope nobody gets offended as I have also posted a message on the > Elecraft K3 Group, but I need some help in resolving this issue. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Width Control and AF Output Level
Hi Keith, I think the problem is in the setting for the RXEQ. You do not want to use +db boost for CW. As I understand it, RXEQ is disabled at 100Hz and 50Hz width. So if he has boosted a particular frequency by 10db then when he narrows the bandwidth he will suddenly hear a loss of audio signal of 10db. To solve this problem keep the RXEQ set to 0 db for the frequencies of interest and use negative db settings for the frequencies of no interest. 73, Mike K2MK Keith Onishi wrote > One of my friend K3 users report that AF output level with 100Hz passband > width is lower than with 150Hz passband width. Re: [Elecraft] CW RX
Hi Mark, Barry's recommendation is what I did, however, there is one other thing to consider. This topic was discussed a few years ago on the reflector and Lyle advised that it was not recommended to peak up a desired frequency on CW. Only use negative settings for undesired frequencies. The reason was that at narrow DSP width settings like 50Hz or 100Hz the RX EQ is cut off. So if you had a peak setting of 8db in the RX EQ and you narrowed the bandwidth you would hear a sudden decrease in audio volume of 8db as you turned the width knob counter clockwise. Of course that was many firmware revisions ago so this might not still be true. 73, Mike K2MK pastormg wrote Good Evening, I have been tinkering around with the RX EQ #'s for CW. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Diversity Audio Equalizer question / clarification
Hi Jerry, That's an interesting question. You can vary the volume of each receiver but the settings you make in RX EQ apply to both receivers. 73, Mike K2MK ae4pb wrote Reading the manual I see there's an audio equalizer feature to tune the audio to our liking. Is it possible when using subrx to independently adjust the equalizer for each ear? I ask because I have some hearing loss at some frequencies from my time in the Navy. As a result, sounds are often different when heard by each ear. I'd like to be able to tune each side for comfort and best sound. My inference is that each receiver has it's own DSP so the capability may already be available and I'm missing it in the manual. From what I read it appears to be an adjustment for overall RX or TX and not RX Left/Right. If this is not an available function I'd like to submit it as a possible feature add for future revisions. Re: [Elecraft] Another one of those filter questions
Hi Alan, The information is in the manual but you sometimes have to search for these things. On page 46, the crystal filter setup page, it states that you should enter a gain of 1-2 db for the 400 Hz filter. I have a 400 Hz filter and I have entered 2 db. I searched the PDF version of the K3 manual for offset and found on page 79 that it states that all 8 pole filters have zero offset. A note to this effect should have probably been added to page 46. 73, Mike K2MK I purchased a 400Hz 8 pole (Inrad) filter and installed it in my K3 yesterday. There were no markings on the box and some obscure numbers on a small label on the side of the filter case, but there was no offset figure. The Cady book mentions that for 8 pole filters an offset is unnecessary, so I presume this is correct? It also mentions adding a small gain figure of 1 or 2, what do others normally do for a CW filter? 73, Alan. It is the same filter currently sold by Elecraft for the K3S at $139.95. They work perfectly and include mounting hardware. This filter can be used in the main or sub receiver and since it is an 8 pole filter it has zero offset and does not require unique matching in sub receiver applications. Hi Larry, Probably a pin 11 problem in the accessory cable leading to the KPA500. Search the archive for pin 11 problem. Re: [Elecraft] K3: KXV3B in an Older K3
Hi Dave, If the K3 is running Beta MCU 5.26 then there is a new configuration setting which applies when the KXV3B is installed. Here is the explanation from the 5.26 notes. * PREAMP 2 and CONFIG:PREAMP2 MENU ENTRY (KXV3B): This menu entry is only applicable if a KXV3B module is installed (supplied with the K3S). It also only applies if the current band is 12, 10, or 6 meters. If PREAMP2 is set to ON, then the PRE switch rotates through settings of OFF, PRE 1, and PRE 2 on the applicable band. PRE 2 turns on the low-noise preamp on the KXV3B module (+20 dB, with a typical NF of -144 dBm on 12/10/6 meters). When PRE 2 is selected, the PRE icon will flash slowly. Note: Do not use an external preamplifier (such as an Elecraft PR6 or PR6-10) when using the built-in low-noise preamp (PRE 2). This would result in excessive gain. Here are two posts made by Wayne: On 5/21/2015 7:42 AM, Wayne Burdick wrote: The addition of the low-noise amplifier for 12-6 meters is the only change. The module is compatible with either the K3 or K3S. The manual will be posted when it's complete. 73, Wayne N6KR On 5/22/2015 5:07 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote: On May 22, 2015, at 12:41 PM, N2TK, Tony tony@verizon.net wrote: Preamp 2, on the KXV3B, is in addition to the normal preamp (preamp 1). But firmware will only let you turn on one or the other -- not both. When preamp 2 is ON, it totally dominates the noise figure equation, so there's no value in also turning on preamp 1. Preamp 2 has a gain of 20 dB, while preamp 1 has a gain of 10 dB. To turn preamp 2 ON, you first have to enable it on one or more of the applicable bands using the CONFIG:PREAMP2 menu entry. You can enable it on 12, 10, and 6 meters. Once preamp 2 is enabled, tapping PRE cycles through OFF/PRE1/PRE2 on the applicable band. Other bands will only show OFF/PRE1. When PRE2 is selected, the PRE icon flashes slowly as a reminder. 73, Wayne N6KR 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-KXV3B-in-an-Older-K3-tp7603673p7603674.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] New user - two antenna questions
Hi Peter, You probably will need the protection on the K3 AUX RF input. There is some minimal built in protection in the form of carrier operated relays (COR). You'll see them in the block diagrams at the end of the K3 user manual. But if you hear the relays clicking while transmitting it's suggested that the internal protection might not be sufficient. If you are already using the key out connection on the back of the K3 for an amplifier you can use the auxiliary key out connection in the 15 pin accessory socket. It is a low current output so you might require an additional driver transistor if your current protection device draws high current. Specs are contained in the user manual. The K3 remembers settings such as ANT1 and ANT2 on a per band basis. So yes, you can have an HF antenna on ANT1 and a 6 meter antenna on ANT2 and not have to worry about pressing any additional buttons when you change bands. 73, Mike K2MK Peter W2IRT wrote Hello all, Waiting on my K3s, which will be my first-ever Elecraft product. First off, I'm transitioning from a Yaesu Mark V, and I have a K9AY receive loop that's connected to the radio's auxiliary antenna port. The Mark-V requires a relay cutoff to protect the front end from the aux-in line when transmitting, which obviously I have installed. Will I need to use this on the K3S, and if so, how does it interface? Or is there built-in protection within the K3S, so that when I'm transmitting at 1500W I won't risk damage to the front end from the receive antenna? Second, I have one coax coming in for my HF antennas (and ancillary station equipment), and a second direct coax for my 6m Yagi on a different tower. Is it possible to place the 6m Yagi on ANT-2 and HF system coax on ANT-1, and have the radio switch automatically when I invoke 6m? - 73 and Good DX Peter, W2IRT -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/New-user-two-antenna-questions-tp7603433p7603481.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 6m Internal Birdie
Hi Tom, It's been a few years since I did birdie hunting on my K3 because most of them turned out not to be birdies but signals originating from my wireless router in a different room. So step 1 is to pull the power cord out of your router and see if the problem goes away. If it does buy a different router. Step 2 is to remove your antenna cable and make sure the birdie does not decrease in strength. If it does then it's probably a signal coming in on your antenna and not something generated inside the K3. After confirming that it is internally generated, step 3 is to remove the K3 top cover and listen to the birdie while you move the various coax cables inside the K3 around. If you find a position that eliminates the noise, tape the cable in place with some painters tape. 73, Mike K2MK k1tl wrote Hi all, I have been having a problem with a 6m internal birdie around 50.096 which is fairly strong and interferes with any signal(s) around that frequency. Re: [Elecraft] AUTOINF Auto 1 Anomaly
Hi Rick, I would like to comment on the mystery cycling between 14000 and 14050. I have experienced this behavior. Do you have more than one SteppIR controller? Are they slaved together and is the master controller the older style and the slave controller(s) the SDA100 style? If yes, then the problem may be caused by the fact that the old controller resolves frequency to 10Hz and the SDA100 resolves to 1Hz. Logging programs tend to request frequency information every second or so. The SDA100 display will immediately display the exact frequency. But a second later it will correct itself to the 10Hz resolution of the master controller. 73, Mike K2MK Rick Tavan N6XI wrote Thanks, Don. That's what I thought. Hi Ted, Do an archive search for the string: SVGA ribbon cable Review the posts and see if they bear any similarity to what you are now experiencing. I think the gist of the thread was that placement of the ribbon cable could be the cause of spurious spikes. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote Just installed the SVGA option in the P3 and have an odd spike appearing on the screen. Any help would be appreciated. Here are the symptoms: The spike appears at 11.8 KHz above the VFO A frequency, and stays at that distance as VFO A is tuned - that is, it moves as VFO A moves. It appears on 10, 15, 20, and 40 meters (haven¹t tried others). The apparent amplitude is over S9. But there is no signal there - tuning across the spike¹s frequency with the SubRX produces nothing audible in the K3. The spike disappears when SVGA EN is set to OFF. The spook appears although there is no SVGA monitor connected, and no computer connected to anything, so it¹s not from some other box. Seems to be residing in the P3. Did not occur before the SVGA option was installed. Firmware in both the K3 and the P3 and its SVGA are current as of yesterday - but the anomaly appeared both before and after the updates, and before and after the synths were changed. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! Re: [Elecraft] Nifty Ham Accessories Plus Opt booklet
Hi Mike, Regarding manuals. If you are the kind of guy who will sit down with the manual and read every page and simultaneously perform functions on the rig then you don't really need the nifty books. Depending on how much you use your rig you will learn everything you need to know eventually. This may be 4 hours for some users and 4 months for others. Re: [Elecraft] P3 question
Hi Julie, It sounds like you prefer to leave your P3 in Tracking mode. The procedure I'll describe works best if you have the P3 set to Fixed Tune mode. I have a Fn button set to flip back and forth between Fixed Tune and Tracking but if you don't you can easily access it from the Menu under FixTrack. Just push the SELECT knob to flip flop between Fixed Tune mode and Tracking mode. If the DX is operating UP you'll want your VFO-A cursor to be on the left side of the screen. To do this hold the CENTER button on the right side of the P3. Then twist the P3 knob clockwise. If you don't see the full pileup you may have to increase the frequency SPAN of the display. Just press the SPAN button and twist the P3 knob clockwise. If the DX station is listening DOWN then you'll move the VFO-A cursor to the right side of the screen by twisting the knob counterclockwise. 73, Mike K2MK jsdroyster wrote Normally the P3 uses the VFO A frequency as its center, but when a DX wants stations to call in very far above or below his own frequency (a very wide split, as used by K1N recently) then I need to learn how to tune the P3 away from the VFO A frequency or else the pileup does not show on the P3. Re: [Elecraft] Split operation - display of Transmit frequency on keydown
I think Steve has it correct. Everybody engaged in this discussion obviously understands how to get in and out of split and knows when to use it. I believe that the 3 existing visual indicators on the K3 are adequate. I think the problem occurs because we are not looking at the K3. We are concentrating on the audio and studying our P3 and computer monitor(s). We might be turning the VFO-B knob but we're not necessarily looking at the radio. Hi Carl, I too am still experiencing occasional freezes. Typically 1 to 2 seconds in length. I'm going to guess that the improvement is on the order of 95%. I think the problem was described as the way in which the K3 tells the P3 that it is coming out of transmit. Re: [Elecraft] P3 SVGA in Split
Hi Tighe, I was able to repeatedly duplicate what you described. I think you found a bug. First, we should get the nomenclature correct. You don't mean VFO A Marker you mean VFO A Cursor. And the problem only occurs in Tracking mode. And the problem is not just caused by pressing the Spot button. If you gently twist the VFO A dial the center frequency on the top of the SVGA screen changes and the VFO A cursor jumps to the center of the screen on the external monitor. The P3 display remains as it was. In addition to toggling FixTrack you can also clear it by a very slight turn of the P3 knob if the center frequency shift function is still active. A slight turn will make the VFO A cursor jump back to where it was set at the side of the screen. Others may not have noticed it because the whole idea of having the VFO A cursor not in the center of the screen really cries out for Fixed Tune mode rather Tracking mode. 73, Mike K2MK Tighe Kuykendall wrote Just noticed something odd with the latest P3 SVGA code (1.35/1.22). Am split on 80m. Held the P3 button for Center and rotated the knob so VFO A was closer to the left side of the screen then tapped the button again. All was fine until I tapped Spot on the K3. Then the VFO A marker on the SVGA moved to the center frequency, not the VFO A freq. The P3 is still displaying correctly. Toggling FixTrack got it back in sync, but it's repeatable. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX Antenna QSK
Hi Jim, My Pixel loop is about 15 feet away from my BigIR vertical. I run 1500 watts QSK and have not had any problem at all. In fact since the recent improvements to the K3 QSK it's become a pretty pleasant way of operating. As Vic stated, there is a mechanical relay in the Pixel power box that resides inside the shack which could be distracting. However, the clicking from my amp's relay is much louder. So headphones are pretty much mandatory at my QTH. I should note that this amp is new and I've only been running QSK for about 5 months. If you are noise sensitive and if you are running a silent amp like the KPA500 you'll probably be dissapointed in the sudden appearance of noise from the Pixel power box. I don't know how the Wellbrook does its switching. Perhaps the bigger question is how many cycles does this little relay go through in a typical weekend DX contest and how long will it last. Is it 10,000 cycles? Is it a million cycles? I always switch the Pixel off on the higher frequency bands for the sole purpose of extending the life of the relay. 73, Mike K2MK James Bennett wrote Hi all, Have a K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500 and have been working 160 meters more the past year or so than in the previous 49 years. I'm looking at perhaps getting a magnetic loop receiving antenna, and have looked at the Wellbrook ALA 1530 and the Pixel RF Pro 1B. But my question is on the T/R switching of the K3. As I operate 99% CW, I depend on QSK operation. If I connect either of those receive only antenna to the RX Ant, does the K3 switch between Ant1 and the RX Ant fast enough to protect the K3? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue
Hi Barry, While your experience suggests that a transistor switch will probably save the day I also wonder if the problem is the result of the absence or presence of a pull-up resistor or perhaps a floating common connection between the rig and amp. Maybe a resistor in the plug would help. I suppose there is some way to check this out. 73, Mike K2MK Barry Simpson wrote .partial quote from Barry.. The conclusion is therefore that from an initial OK position in Stby and Oper as soon as the first character is keyed, the solid state switch in the TS590SG hangs resulting in the KPA500 being permanently in the transmit state. The situation only clears when rig and amp are turned off, the Din plug is removed from the TS590SG and reinserted and both are turned back on. I can then switch the amp back to Oper and all is fine until the very first morse character when it all happens again. So as it stands, there appears to be incompatibility between the TS590SG solid state amp switch and KPA500. As an interim measure, I have rewired the Din plug to use the noisy relay for the amp control and that works fine. The TS590SG does output 12V to the solid state switching pin in certain configurations as did the TS590S. I had a TS590S and I wired a single transistor solid state switch inside the Din plug and that worked perfectly so I am going to do the same again, which should solve the issue. Unfortunately, I gave away the TS590S cable I had made up to the guy I sold the TS590S to. I never got the very bad spike issue fixed but the buyer did not mind as he doesn't use a linear. It really is a pity as I thought that the new linear switching circuitry in the TS590SG was a real step forward but it is not to be, at least not with the KPA500. 73 Barry VK2BJ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-Issue-tp7597707p7597728.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub Receiver and protecting the Sub RX input
There are a couple of things to think about. How much power are you running? How close is the receive antenna to your transmitting antenna? Does your receive only antenna possibly have an interface that can connect to the key out of the K3? (My Pixel Loop antenna has such a device) You can also try it out and listen for a clicking noise from the carrier operated relay inside the K3. It is a protective relay that will energize if it sees too much power coming in on the RX antenna input. If you hear it clicking then it is a good idea to consider additional protection. There are external protective devices available that you can purchase. Hi Phil, 1. You shouldn't see noise generated when you tune the VFO. What bands in particular? Do you have an older K3. There was a VFO noise mod that cleared up tuning noise on the higher frequency bands like 10 and 6 meters. 2. You'll need the latest beta firmware for the P3 and SVGA card to see the markers in the waterfall of the external monitor. 3. The cursors indicate the frequencies seen on the upper and lower K3 displays. A green cursor shows you where VFO A is tuned. A magenta cursor shows you where VFO B is tuned. A red cursor shows you where you transmitting if you are in split or if XIT is activated. The width of the cursors change if you change bandwidth on the K3. The VFO B cursor can be turned off. With regard to markers, my PERSONAL OPINION is that markers are not very useful for my style of operating. Too much effort for too little result. If I see a station of interest I just spin the VFO to land on top of it. Mission accomplished with very little effort. I have used markers, however, as a place holder when I see a station that I want to call but I'm not quite ready to jump there quite yet. When I am ready I still tend to just spin the VFO dial rather than push the knob. Everybody develops their own techniques for using their P3. You will too after you've played with it for a few weeks. 73, Mike K2MK Phil Anderson wrote Recently added a P3 to my K3 station.niceyet questions: 1. Wonder why the spectrum display gets noisy when I tune VFO A. A few have said that is expected and suggested that one make sure the screws on the K3 and P3 case are tight. I'm assuming that when one tunes VFO A, the FFT in the DSP gets lots of extra data and the display is noisy as a result. Once I stop tuning the VFO A the spectrum display goes back to averaging as expected. Hm? 2. I purchased the SVGA card and it came installed in the P3..have been successful is connecting my computer through the RS232 port on the P3 to run both the K3 and P3 utility programs. Also the big display and the P3's LCD are working for the most part. Ok there. Now, is it standard for the external large display to not allow markers in the waterfall area? When I use the P3 menu and turn waterfall markers on or off that works for the P3 LCD. However, there is not marker shown in the waterfall area of the big screen attached via the external display jack. Hm? I can live with that but is that right? 3. Is anyone aware of an article on the web that goes into the why of how the cursors and makers were designed to do what they do? Perhaps things would be easier to follow then since there are a very large number of tap this or hold that combinations available. I realize that to tap or hold increases the number of actions that each switch/etc can do, thus cutting down on the knob count on the front panel. thanks, Phil, w0xi, KS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Couple-of-questions-on-the-P3-tp7597386p7597394.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Request
Hi Gary, You'll want to use the center frequency shift feature. Hold the Center button on the P3 to activate the function and turn the P3 knob until the DX station (VFO A) is wherever you want it to be. It works in Fixed Tune mode or Tracking mode. 73, Mike K2MK Gary Smith-2 wrote Since I often use the P3 for chasing DX in a pileup, I don't need the empty space to the left 1/2 of the screen, or rarely, the right 1/2 of the screen when I have the Dx Tx freq in the center. I'd like to see the P3 allow you to pin the DX Tx frequency to the far side and use the entire screen to pick choose where I want to transmit in split. As it is, when chasing DX pileups, I have to waste 1/2 of the screen which means everything I want to look at has to be compressed in 1/2 the space. 73, Gary KA1J -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-Request-tp7597349p7597354.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] adjusting the K3 to not over-drive an amplifier
Hi Tom, Since it behaves into a dummy load it's probably the SWR but you could also take a closer look at the TX gain calibration. Even after running the calibration routine I have had to touch up the numbers on a couple of bands. Take a look at the K3 manual page 62 for TXGN{pwr}. The last paragraph gives advice on changing the setting manually. Put the K3 on 40 meters, turn off TX ALC and reduce TXGN slightly. Then turn on TX ALC and give it a try. 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/adjusting-the-K3-to-not-over-drive-an-amplifier-tp7596673p7596676.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] P3 and Other Windows Simultaneously
Hi Tony, I found 3 immediate advantages with an external monitor. The first of course was relief for my old eyes. Next, on the P3 I preferred a span width of 10KHz on CW and RTTY and 50KHz on SSB. On the external monitor I was able to jump to 20KHz and 100KHz. The third benefit was the larger waterfall height. During contests it is extremely easy to tune where somebody was just transmitting. Great for search and pounce operating. With the taller waterfall signals stay on the screen for probably close to a minute (I never measured it). CW, RTTY, and PSK decoding can also be left on full time at the bottom of the screen if desired. 73, Mike K2MK Hi Ted, Already have two monitors. Just ordered a 27 to replace the 19. I will use dual inputs -HDMI from the workstation and sub-D from the P3. Will switch video inputs to play with the P3 SVGA. I want to see if I would really use an external video to the P3 before I come up with another option such as a smaller dedicated monitor for the P3. Want to see if it really buys me anything over just using the P3 as I presently use it. 73 HNY! Re: [Elecraft] P3 bug
Hi Jim, There's been some testing done and e-mail communication off the reflector and it appears as though the culprit is the SVGA board. If those that have the problem go into the P3 sub menu and disable the SVGA board the problem should be eliminated. Test data has been passed to Wayne who has put the problem on the list of problems to be resolved. There have been posts from others experiencing hang-ups who don't have the SVGA board. Hopefully the future fix that Elecraft produces will solve all hang-up problems. 73, Mike K2MK Jim Rogers wrote Well, I guess I will chime in as well. Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Keyboard
Hi Tony, Nothing has changed, you cannot view a windows screen from your PC and the enlarged P3 image from the SVGA board on your external monitor simultaneously. You can, however, switch between multiple inputs on most modern LCD monitors. Frequently with a push button on the front of the monitor. 73, Mike K2MK N2TK wrote I have the P3 with the SVGA board. But I do not have an external monitor. The way I read the manual is that you need to hook up an external monitor to use a keyboard and to have the transmit and receive data windows. Is that correct? The reason I don't use an external monitor (I have two already) is that I don't want to dedicate a monitor to just the P3. I am assuming that the SVGA option still does not let you size the window and allow other programs to be displayed on the same monitor, correct? Re: [Elecraft] P3 bug
Hi Vic, I have brought this up on the reflector. I have not given test mode a try but I will. It was strongly suggested to me that it was RF related but the problem crops up to the same degree at high power and running about 30 watts barefoot. I have also loaded up cables with ferrite clamp-ons and the problem persists to the same degree. Always intermittent and unpredictable. I also have the VGA adapter and the problem is visible on both the external monitor and the P3 screen. I have not tried removing he SVGA board to see if the problem persists. It was extremely annoying when I was operating as a W1AW/2 station working RTTY split. I depended on the P3 to direct my focus to stations in the clear. It repeatedly let me down. 73, Mike K2MK Vic Rosenthal 4X6GP/K2VCO wrote I've seen this mentioned by others, but I don't think I've heard an official response. Sometimes the P3 'freezes up' for one to three seconds when returning to receive condition after transmitting CW. It doesn't happen every time, but enough to be bothersome, especially in a fast pileup. It is not caused by RF, because it happens in TX TEST mode. I have the VGA adapter, if that is related, although the freeze occurs on the P3 screen as well. To reproduce the problem, switch to TX TEST mode, and repeatedly send VVV at 25 wpm. The P3 will usually come back immediately after each group, but every few times it will stay frozen for a few seconds. -- 73, Vic, 4X6GP/K2VCO Rehovot, Israel http://www.qsl.net/k2vco/ -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-bug-tp7596485p7596491.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] P3 bug
I also have just proved conclusively that it has nothing to do with RF and nothing to do with a PC application. I tested the P3 with SVGA with my K3 in test mode on 15 meter CW. Using the internal keyer and my paddle with QSK turned on I sent the letter K at 25 WPM and paused. After 5 repeats the P3 hung up for about 1 second. Continuing I sent the letter K about 10 times and the P3 hung on the 10th repeat for about 2 seconds. This is a true problem. More of you should run this test. 73, Mike K2MK Vic Rosenthal 4X6GP/K2VCO wrote Right, but I conclusively proved that this is not the (only?) cause by reproducing the bug without any applications running on my computer that access the K3. Re: [Elecraft] P3 bug
Hi Don, I've had this problem for several years and I only started using QSK this year. Further, the problem is also present when using RTTY (AFSK). I don't use SSB very often so I have not noticed if the problem is present with that mode. All firmware for the K3, P3, and SVGA are the latest, either production or beta. I run WriteLog for both CW and RTTY. But for the testing I just posted about I had no PC applications running and the K3 in test mode. My K3 settings are generally all default values. If there is something specific needed I can look it up and advise. I checked the refresh rate on the P3 and it was set at 10ms which is per the manual. I raised it to 20ms and the problem persists. I raised it 100ms and the problem persists. 73, Mike K2MK Don Wilhelm-4 wrote In addition, there is now QSK OLD and QSK NEW which now adds another variable into the K3 'return to RX after TX equation'. If all parties responding with additional information would state which they are using, perhaps it will be easier to get to the root cause of this behavior. I have no idea if this is a factor in the it does it or it does not do it here statements, but information related to the relevant K3 setup and applications running on the computer certainly seem to be a part of it (even though some have seen it without computer applications). Re: [Elecraft] Little brown truck arrived w/ my K3!
Hi Chris, I've been going direct for digital modes for years with my K3 and never had a problem even at legal limit. If you like your PC sounds and don't want to turn them off when you operate digital you only need a small under $10 USB audio adapter. I'm using this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MSS6CS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8psc=1 It has its own identification on the Windows sound control panel so when you set up your K3 to take sounds from your PC you just identify this device as the source. That lets you set the level independent of your normal PC sounds. I still feed audio from the K3 directly into the PC. I think there is a minor problem with this particular audio adapter as it wants to be a monaural microphone input device rather than a stereo line input device. But there are many similar devices on Amazon to choose from. 73, Mike K2MK Chris Hallinan wrote I just opened the box. Can't wait to dive in. Re: [Elecraft] Which terminal program for contesting/etc with K3
Hi Phil, Both N1MM and WriteLog are very popular and K3 friendly. And both programs can activate K3 macros if you desire. A second monitor is independent of any program. It's strictly a Windoz thing. You'll be able to slide one or more of the various windows from any contest program to either monitor. If you have a P3 with the SVGA option and one of your monitors has dual or triple input capabilities you'll be able to look at your expanded K3 screen on one monitor and do your contest logging on the other. Push a button on the front of the monitor and it's back to being a second monitor under Windoz control. If you have the desk space you could add a third monitor just for P3/SVGA use.
